on the third release on his label, malin genie teams up with amsterdam resident and will & ink regular yaleesa hall for a trip into dubbed out techno and house territory. the ep opens with -oganesson,- an immersive track pivoting around gnarled, shape-shifting dub techno chords. -84- is a more energised cut, using a similar central melodic thread but driving it with a sprightly beat and playful threads of synth expression. -tournant- places the emphasis on textural sound design, embellishing a rugged techno rhythm with sonic matter that takes on an organic quality as it pulses and writhes around the beat. -coronal loop- finishes the ep off with an appropriately star-gazing jam that uses delay and reverb to great effect to create a sense of space in which nimble chord lines and other flourishes can cavort freely.

for this release metrist delves into a set of carefully constructed and deeply rhythmic but ear-grabbingly idiosyncratic, mixed fidelity dancefloor-geared oddities. the first three tracks are united, in a fashion, by the artist’s skill at programming a series of drum tracks that set a definite tone for the productions. within a quite partisan field of often microscopic generic variety, largely pinned down to the tempo and timbre of electronic drums, here metrist has pursued a tricky-to-define path. the bounce of new jack swing is twisted amongst stripped back polyrhythms, equal parts groove and glitch seasoned by some futuristic acid filters that create a constantly shifting aura of space and textural nuance around the individual drum hits. quite often arrhythmic interjections punctuate these ‘grooves’, be it the sawing bursts of noise and snarled, incoherent vocals on ‘an soaep’, the non-language and playful, bubbling bass surrounding the half time feel of ‘on golden seize’ that builds to something approximating an industrial take on uk funky or the brash sub-wobbles that intrude ‘pantomimer tongue’s juddering knife-scraping-on-a-balloon stutters. ‘caaacel the horze’ closes the record in a less weighty style, with crunchy arpeggios running on a synth that sounds like it’s picking up interference from a radio channel, as snatches of moaned vocals allude to a deeply ambiguous yet chilling narrative behind the music. thudding kicks intrude on the skittish melody but in a non-rhythmic way reminiscent of someone trying desperately to snatch your attention by banging on the adjacent wall. gauzy melodic textures in the background provide a calming counterpoint to the uneasy qualities of the composition

were super excited to present the latest artist to join the dirt crew stable, french producer sekou babe. he ticked all the right boxes for us with this beautiful debut ep foresight prevents blindness which explores his fresh and vibey outlook on house with sideways glances to smokey jazz, breaks and garage. the a-side lines up three varied tunes. perspectives of the youth and soukoun step in quickly with lively breakbeat rhythms. the first boasting warm soul vocals and steady bass groove, the second a melancholic yet uplifting back and forth between vintage piano and warbling rhodes. treize zero zero trois is a deep and dreamy house jam. cinematic elements infused with punchy percussion and 80s sonic touches add up to good times all round. on the b, our good friend nachtbraker does what he does best, flipping treize zero zero trois bringing the deep, dubby amsterdam vibrations. his version is lush, textural and slightly fruity, with surging synths, tropical percussion and a stomping kick. sekou babe rounds things off with the extravagant crown collection, showing us yet another colour in his musical spectrum. its trip hop meets detroit where warped strings introduce shuffling drums before the track begins to build layering subtle arpeggios, smooth pads, crash hits and a buoyant melody. sekou babe would like to add that all tracks were written and produced by b.b. at 7e republique studio and says thanks to peter, ghizlene, mohammed and florian, you beautiful souls.

design default makes a contemplative debut lp blending ambient soundscapes with electronica & jazz hints. entitled dawn chorus, the record sounds like a reflexion on awakening to new feelings and ideas as well as reminiscing and looking at those that came in the past. the lp opens in a playful and harmonious way with bells play, bringing forward the idea of awakening. the rest of the record designs a world in which slow unfurling soundscapes with heavy bass like the forest or two mirrors consistently stand alongside glitchy atmospheres like the distorted ecce or the celestial escale. tracks like peaks and notes or wood caving put the accent on harmonic and textural content. overall, the record is rooted in a cosmic almost new age ambient tradition, but focuses more on the idea of renewal than vagrancy and languishing. if ecstasy and euphory do not describe the feeling here, darkness doesnt either. the result is a balanced, mature and diverse lp, bringing many beautiful sonic atmospheres to life, and telling a journey of wonder of openness.

the a-side features “eastbound”, a breakbeat driven slice of techno built for the club, charging forward on a journey through dizzy pads, bouncing oddball basslines and textural pressure. next up is “letat”, an ambient breath of air, both melancholic and uplifting. the b-side strides further into the unknown with “rhodesamp (whacked out revamp)”, a transmission of dubbed-out meditation. rounding off the release is “ava”, a hypnotic wedge of dub techno with a middle eastern feel.

a second release for londons future primitive records brings to the fore a new hand-picked selection of hard to find if not overlooked tracks from wolfgang voigt, dj guy and fernando corona, aka murcof. all of the music to feature on this four-track recast ep was previously subject to tape or cd only release. lifted from his only album as love inc., wolfgang voigt s income sits primo as the a1, holding firm 22 years after its original release. predating voigt s work as gas, its caustic chords, shimmering melodies and chilled 90bpm vibe render it a production borne from the classic dub techno blueprint of the early-to-mid 90s. an early take on slo-mo techno. the dat tapes of dj guy have again been raided, with future primitive joining a select cast of followers to rejuvenate the englishman s productions with an edit that appeared on his tape for crisis urbana. both b-side tracks botas de oro and secondary inspection theme come from murcof s one time terrestre alias, a project from the earl 2000s which fuses textural, slow-motion and minimal house sensibilities with mexican banda and norteno music aka nortec, a micro-sub-genre to come out of tijuana. loose percussion, swung drums and winding rhythms are made all the more esoteric through the subversively climactic nature of terrestre s music.

‘spes aeterna’ compiles seven sonic representations of the video art by diane drubay. five musicians coming from australia, united states and sweden collaborated with the french video artist to create a deep ambient and experimental drone compilation: zanias, halv drøm, kim boekbinder, dan söderqvist and bixu. the compilation is a right blend of psychoactives colors with textural, emotional and rhythmic soundscapes to expand the idea of sublime and create a strong natural cognitive enhancer. the compilation should be listened facing the video pieces to dive into an introspective state and reach high consciousness. this is the first installation of a trilogy.

helena hauff s label continues to subvert all expectations by celebrating the truly underground and ignoring all expectations to provide obvious club material in line with her dj sets. instead we get treated to blood sport, a daring post punk band with a whiff of the pop group in their frenzied, messy style and plenty of sonic trickery occurring in between the intricate playing. -harsh realm- has the textural finish of earliest cabaret voltaire, but with a little more deft playing from the intensely talented players. -boiled in dust- meanwhile has a distinctly afrobeat-meets-industrial spirit that makes for striking, original material that should appeal to lovers of the truly alternative side of british music culture.

emlock founder untold is back on the label with his first vinyl ep since ‘doff’ on sub-label hblk back in 2015. this release follows appearances on last year’s #savefabric compilation, and more recently on ‘magic city iii’ compiled by mixpak boss jubilee. hek029 follows a rewarding period of a&r for hemlock that has so far delivered eps from bruce and parris, with several more scheduled to drop throughout 2017. ep’s two winding tracks are a natural progression from the fiercely textural drum work of untold’s previous singles and album ‘black light spiral.’ here the material is given more space to breathe and released from the grid creating a lighter more footloose feel. ‘tear up the club’ carries the weight of dmz era half-step using a loose web of elasticated breaks and builds to reveal a striking melodic line. on ‘watton res’ exotic tones are further compressed and expanded in sequence, encasing drum machine, keyboards and guitar work within a delicate shell.

i-lp-o in dub is the solo project of pan sonic member ilpo väisänen. capital dub chapter 1 follows the 2015 debut communist dub - a year marked by further descent into economic crisis and instability. the usual business cycles of production / distribution / consumption running alongside macro cycles of boom and bust have been replaced by ossification, austerity, the machine seizing up.
ilpo’s “circular riddims” complement the ebb and flow of the circulation of money + commodities and are mirrored by his field recordings of barcelona rain – the final phase of the cyclical movement of water. but of course the smooth running of “paradise capital” is unsustainable. destroyed techno and open spaces contend with sinister swarming atmospheres. a cash machine flickers. zeros and ones displace another factory. dub as decay – the ghostly remains of tracks eroded by time and technology. the “invisible hand” of the market spasms with tremors.

new years deal - delsins next trick is a debut double 12 from sentomea, an amsterdam native, real name sander schuurman, you might not have heard of but a real synth freak. exclusively producing his music in hardware-based live takes, and that gives rise to perfectly imperfect stuff that feels visceral and alive. often making music with a visual connection, this ep is full of versatile 909 beats and fizzing electronic textures. relative solace is up first and is a frosty house trip with bell textures and melancholic strings sounding all celestial and heavenly. wander is all about a sludgy 909 groove being lit up with bright strings and icy hi hat ringlets as dissonant pads stretch and skew all about the arrangement then fortitude boogie has classic detroit pads, a lovely broken rhythm and a funkateer bassline that makes the whole cut dance and emotional dance. fluid is more stripped back and clean, with rubbery 909 drums plodding below w atery, gurgling synth sounds up top and this most expressive and textural ep closes with the experimental fm synthesis that is matter with its raw, off beat grooves and glassy surfaces, and finally reminiscent, a horizontal, star gazing cut that encourages you to lay back and day dream in the grass.

the search from collocutor, the band’s second lp, is the story of a journey, from disillusionment to new beginnings, alienation to belonging, darkness to hope. it is a journey that can be interpreted as spiritual, emotional or physical/geographical, depending on the listener’s own experiences. tamar osborn, the band leader and composer says: “this wasn’t planned as a ‘concept’ album, but as the four main compositions developed they and their titles fell into a natural narrative order and the theme of the album became apparent. the three improvised conversations were an opportunity to explore musically the meaning of ‘collocutor’ - a person taking part in a conversation - and how this applies to performance, and also to expand the textural range of the ensemble by dividing it into smaller groupings and freeing the musicians from structured composition.”

their first output is a three 12” ep’s trilogy called “devotion” by one of the two owners sciahri, the florence based dj and producer who has just released his second ep on ilian tape. each release is each release is limited and numbered. as sciahri somehow tries to create worlds and environments, the first chapter of this trilogy “devotion - part 1” represents the start of the journey, entering a dimension that is abstract yet solid and physical, full of vividly distinguishable details. the air is dense but there’s room to breathe and to let one’s body and mind engage with the narrative that develops over the course of the three tracks.

black truffle presents people pleaser, the new lp from nantes-based drummer and percussionist will guthrie. initially rising to prominence in australia as a drummer in the fields of jazz and improvised music, guthrie later turned increasingly toward electronics and amplified percussion, developing an idiosyncratic style of electro-acoustic performance characterized by shimmering metallic textures, rapid-fire textural transformations and aggressively high volume. recent years have seen a return to the drum kit in both solo and collaborative work, in performances where guthrie uses duration and endurance to push at the limits of his formidable technical abilities as a player in the free jazz tradition, working variations on short rhythmic units into an endless flow of non-metered pulse.

dub is the keyword, techno is the way. the very first autarchy release represents a rapidly and constantly changing momentum. there is a black and white atmosphere that surrounds the whole vinyl four-tracker. the skilled italian duo alpi make their mark on the a side, together with the wrong assessment darker reinterpretation, shaped around solid textural processing and raw rhytmatics. it s mainly a techno release, yet xdb delivers his own breakbeatish and more reflective vision of the b side, produced by label artists complementary opposites. the label is at the moment under the radar, working through a connection operating into events, music production and label management in between italy and germany.

nested structure is the first great circles release from artists outside of philadelphia. thrive are tetsuya yoshida and hitoshi kojima. they both grew up in the north kanto area of japan. they first met at the club run by tetsuya yoshida called sound a base nest, which is known as having the best sound system in the north kanto area. in 2007, the duo started their dj / producing unit thrive. previous releases have included a split 12inch with keia yano for japanese label struct, and recent solo releases by hitoshi for always human tapes and for his own label ambivalent deviation. this record almost didnt happen! — tetsuya and hitoshi were picking up great circles records in japan and, having periodically communicated with each other about music, they sent us the struct 12inch to check out. while cleaning out the back of the car a few months later, the presumably empty record mailer was about to land in the recycle bin when we fortunately discovered a demo cd of unreleased thrive material inside. we drove around listening to it and week later we agreed to release a 12inch. the music on the nested structure 12inch is dark, foreboding, even outwardly threatening. its hypnotic, textural and rhythmically complex.
