still steamin from his turner street sound collaboration. midnight tenderness serves up a dreamy first solo offering with a fire-cracker of a four-tracker for sydneys ken oath records. the opener refresco is a bleary eyed house number with gently propulsive 707 cowbells and shaker rhythms over smooth pads & an infectiously jazzy bassline. the four to the floor mould is quickly broken as the ep progresses - terme is a midtempo electro track that retains all of the dreaminess of refresco while punching in some swish drum programming. flipping the record over. bevanda is a sweaty miasma of sub-bass. fm flutes and birdlike synth leads that could soundtrack an imaginary club located in the middle of queenslands tropical rainforests. the eps closer. hydra. pushes the tempo way down and introduces some smooth guitar licks. courtesy of riffin rory as well as some lithe flute play. the end result is a sleazy new jack swing jam that works as well for warm-up as it does for cooling down. if youre tired of buying boring club 12inches. look no further! this one will be as comfortable coming through your home stereo as it will be in the club

pablos eye is the science of studio pressure. when engineer becomes artist. appropriating left and right as well as front and back. pablos eye uses the mixing desk to examine and exhaust the possibilities of moments. pablos eye is a record of that examination and exhaustion. but it is also a record of its own inner space. by means of depth placement. psychoacoustics and spatial fug. pablo’s eye is experienced in the deeper reaches of the body. bypassing the conscious part of the mind entirely. . pablos eye is the turning of recorded music inside out to show its seams. it interrogates a song. stripping down the body of the song to reveal its bones. pablo’s eye is in the interstices of music. it plugs the gaps. fills the holes. pablo’s eye seeks out the concealed mechanisms. it is a songs hidden agenda. for this compilation. it was decided to present the softer air-beatings of pablos eye. more than anything. pablos eye is a temporary atmosphere. like a taste or a dream.

london band tomaga are back with their fourth release under the hands in the dark banner: memory in vivo exposure. the 12inch ep consists of four original tracks and yet another new musical evolution for the duo. whilst they still use complex layering and harmonic polyrhythms in developing their original approach. this time the sonic tales they have shared are much more cinematic and dreamlike. these visions are locked up into emotionally charged loops to convey the sensation of a dream in which half remembered things become new zones of feeling.
the two versatile record labels banlieue and peur bleue are joining forces for a very special occasion: psyop. the outstanding debut album by watching airplanes. a production duo breaking through in 2018. psyop opens up an alternate reality where dance music is freed from the yoke of genre-based distinctions and is no longer tied to any dancefloor norms. by exploring different moods with smooth sailing and rough patches. psyop is an intense journey in the murky world of psychological mass conspiracy. this lp could very well be the soundtrack for an cutting-edge orwellian sci-fi movie or an imagined futuristic venue where music and dance of a new kind are performed. forward-thinking dance music from the future seems like the most accurate description for this album devoid of any tropes or nostalgia.
thick breakbeats. rolling drums and groovy acid lines combined with a ghostly background theme make this ep into straight-up clubready material. after his last release on the imprint. de sluwe vos is back with another 4-tracker made for the dancefloor.

after kicking off the year with releases by wheelman and general ludd. were very pleased to announce that naum gabo completes our recent trilogy of releases from glasgow based artists. alongside ivan smagghe. its no secret that optimo have been a huge influence around these parts and having released ivans smagghe & cross project on belters last year. its a huge honour to work with naum gabo - the production partnership of jonnie wilkes (jg wikes of optimo) and james savage (mastering engineer for optimo music). fittingly enough. naum gabo played live at the first ever optimo related parties we attended at the sub club back in 2005 and jonnies influential and supportive presence has been felt over the years as we started to become more involved in the glasgow scene and as the label developed. so it didnt require much thought to do this release before we had even heard these new naum gabo tracks they are absolute slammers of the highest order! really big release. bringing to our minds the likes of errorsmith. belters is a new club-focussed label brought to you by huntleys + palmers.

having grown up with and on the internet. martin steer (1986) has transformed its pull into a concept album that is just as immediate and intangible as the digital world. bad stream is guitars and machines vanishing in the spaces between radiohead and nine inch nails only to reemerge amidst ambient. noise. and drone. bad stream. then. is his modus operandi - a hybrid soundtrack to the feelings of resignation. isolation. and cynicism within neoliberal cyberspace and to that strangely numbing comfort of bodies transmuting into zeros and ones in real time.
new clouds material from calum macleod and liam robertson can mean only one thing: these things will go quick. and as you can imagine. you ll want to get them in your dj sets just in time for the nye debauchery. the duo land on british techno imprint overlee assembly. kicking the carnage off with a perc remix of tuned to a dead channel. something of a toxic headbanger with a gnarly bass at its core. this is followed by a much sleeker. more restrained tuned version of chained to a dead channel. and then by a jungle/breakcore driven version from headcore wreckage. and an acid-laden. drum-nutty hardcore tuned again version.

by day he guides lasers into position using precision equipment. at night he crafts raw house music. welcome to the unusual world of reflection port assembly. we got to know one another through a few brief. slurred encounters in the smoking area during the fabled forza italo night or at the aptly named gary’s gang. pretty soon it was clear that he had impeccable taste. like that record that featured coil and ice t. one sunny friday afternoon in june. he tore himself away from guiding the lasers and we met up in the city centre. the light breeze did nothing to dissuade the office workers from gathering outside the pub for sneaky post-work pints. surrounded a sea of grey and blue business attire. we agreed to make ‘retribution’ the second release on first cut. featuring three cuts. it spans house. electro. boogie and even some detroit techno influences. but ’retribution’ is more than the sum of these parts. unlike his precision-based day job it’s rough and imperfect. flawed but warm. messy and charming - like a snapshot of every day life in dublin.

dj seinfeld presents an immersive ep exploring the balance between fragility and force. ‘sakura ep’ is the third and most dynamic offering from deep sea frequency. four tracks draw from a multitude of influences. breaks. electro. dub and trance elements band together with a familiar lo-fidelity approach where distortion acts as an instrument of its own. ‘sakura’ is a subaquatic dose of old school electro with swollen bass and fuzzy harmonics. title track ‘segrada’ brandishes swirling melodies with layers of detail. followed by ‘belvedere’ which uses looped breaks and a sub-driven bassline to build animated funk. ‘battery’ closes things out with a nod to detroit. and a full on drum workout which plays with delicate melodic inflections over a cavernous low end.
we are not where we live. but the valley we built enjoyment through suffering. beauty in chaos. african ghost valley apply these principles to create their heavy doomsday electronics pulled in from the black bunker a d.i.y space under a multi-story car-park. separated from any scene on the surface. the record was put together by european / canadian duo childle grangier and gabriel ghebrezghi a partnership formed in the heat of heavily improvised recording sessions. where the pair would thrash out their versions of power electronics. industrial waste drops and rhythmic dub rumble to the cities homeless. keeping these raw fnal cuts away from any studio trickery. the microphone would be left on to archive feld recordings and wayward audio drops. capturing the hum and lifeblood of the bunker and the wheezing lungs of the dense concrete that surrounded them. titling this work colony. the album is a open-ended and multi-edged tool for agv to explore. allowing the listener to interpret the work as they see ft. bringing to mind images of corroded space settlements and the darkest recess of human history. you decide.

the lines you are about read are a laconic introduction to the music of an elusive new musician on antinote. biographical details about him would probably not help comprehend his music and might even seem slightly contradictory with the music itself. as reigi haipa has been produced in reims at least. it would have been much more accommodating if the capital of champagne was located somewhere in-between sheffield and london.

while quite a few people are obviously still dwelling in the achievements of munich’s disco era during the 1980s. it seems that another major part of the cities partying scene travels to the same clubs every weekend. here they are getting fed with the plasticized tech house trax that everybody wants. drinking vodka red bull until they almost pass out and walk - if they are still able to - home happily. oversaturated by non-inventive. but good selling music. so far the cliché. fortunately. reality looks a bit different. at least for the lovers of uk bass. in order to make people aware of the city’s flourishing developments in this scene. the grandmasters of ruffhouse and jahmoni records have teamed up for a limited 10”.
