ltd repress, * thats what friends are for* showcases adesses touch for building tension. think back to those twelves from the dons of dancefloor drama - ron trent, carl craig, dj duke and murk - music built for a world where the lights dont come back on.
stranger days are here and the italian maestro has returned with two new soundtracks for the dancefloor apocalypse. the world is soon to end, lory d will be its last man standing. early warnings from ben ufo, joy orbison, kema and tale of us.
brought to attention in dj sets from the likes of rustie, jackmaster, and receiving radio support on bbc radio 1 from annie mac, zane lowe, mistajam plus more, *minger* follows darqs previous productions for some of grime and raps most memorable characters, notably tempa ts *next hype* and danny browns *blueberry*. underpinned by crisp 808 drums, a serrated synth riff and doom.
deejay deer was born and raised in the bavarian wilderness and is to our knowledge the first forest dwelling animal to use the prefix deejay. deejay deer produces music of such high quality and depth that most people think hes a true pro who has been hiding in a studio for the past 20 years. deejay deer is hiding in the woods to protect himself from all the fake producers in the city
hiding behind their three character website is a belgian duo called goldffinch whose steep vision of dancefloor techno marries loveable little phrases of awkward computer conversation with the kind of kick drums that will rattle the windows of your neighbours house when your soundsystem is tweaked perfectly. goldffinch may well be a duo bent on keeping things simple but when the end result, which is built out of such minimal layers, is so arresting, there’s no need to change the formula. not one bit.
ltd repress , for our final record of the year, we turn to glasgow’s man of the year - denis sulta. like a good chunk of the numbers family, he has earnt his stripes working at the coalface of techno aka rubadub. he has crafted two excellent twelves for our bare-chested cousins at dixon avenue basement jams and is beginning to carve himself out a reputation as a dj of some repute, expertly blending in the bangers with sulta-certified weirdness. denis is part of a new wave of glaswegian artists who are doing amazing things and whose music is continuously exciting us. ‘it’s only real’ created by sulta during a burst of inspiration one sunday, takes us back to a time when techno was intricately melodic but still kicked hard in the club. made with only the purest of intentions and a dedication to the art of moving heads and feet. support from four tet, john talabot, joy orbison, kowton and loads more quality djs.
at 12:22 hrs on july 19th 2016, the manned spacecraft 10.000 suns sent a distress signal from the inner edge of earth s atmosphere. communication with the shuttle was lost shortly afterwards. fragments of the ship have been recovered on the west coast of scotland, but pilot bryan kessler of cologne is currently missing in action. black box recordings have been retrieved and will be archived to regulation standard vinyl and digital audio encapsulations.
ltd 2016 repress... you aint got no kind of feeling inside. i got something that will surely set your stuff on fire you refuse to put anything before your pride what i got will knock all your pride aside you may have caught pride in recent jackmaster and spencer sets over the past few months, but were letting it out in the wild now. the simplicity of the elements is the strength here - the creeping discord of the piano, the slow sub rolls, the sheer power of the vocal - baked together with sharp drum boxes, space echoes and advs years of production wisdom. the celestial mr fingers inspired tones of first time provide the flip
gdm (glaswegian dance music) pioneer - sparky (aka dave clark) is back on numbers. having spent the last year on lockdown in his luxurious garden studio we have finally managed to wrestle two tracks out of his ageing hands. signals is an all-new track, first heard on dave’s essential mix for bbc radio 1 (aired as part of jackmaster s made in glasgow), and now in the sets of ben ufo and jd twitch. signals is classic sparky, nailing that sweet spot between the proto-techno sounds of british synth pop and the dancefloor nous of the motor city. the flip is a snarling metal-bashing beast called tigress which comes direct from his archives. we ve been on at him to release this one for almost a decade and after playing a 192 mp3 at a pretty boisterous numbers x optimo party last summer, sparky finally relented. one day we ll convince sparky to let us release all the music sitting in his vaults but for now here are two gems from a man whose music has played a pivotal role in the history of numbers.
weve long been admirers of kornel kovacs and the studio barnhus label he co-runs, so it was only a matter of time before we poached him for a 12inch. like some of us at numbers he was an early starter, playing in clubs since the age of 14, promoting his own parties and hosting a radio show, the influential p3 dans show on swedish national radio
2015 repress ...walk on in, walk on in, walk on in…. these are the words you ve no doubt heard reverberating around clubs and festivals all year. the man behind this gospel-powered beast is none other than welsh-born, berlin residing doc daneeka. walk on in will be released on 4th november on limited vinyl and digital, with the slightly darker but equally demolition friendly b-side trife pt ii. support so far from jamie xx, joy orbison, oneman, jd twitch, will bankhead and panorama bar stalwarts nick hopner and nd baumecker.
attention please, w’d like to shine a light on the man whose records would come to define many a numbers party, who once described his music as for the strippers, for the street. the original master of ghetto house, the one and only dj deeon.
two brand new remixes of sparkys eternal numbers anthem ‘portland’ by tuff city kids (gerd janson & phillip lauer). having requested the parts of the original track, the intrepid duo travelled back in time to the year 1991, set up their samplers and got busy with the breakbeats and euphoric synth pads.
over the course of four eps for numbers and creation of his own label ‘total fantasy’, deadboy has charted his own path far beyond the deep black space of mediocrity with previous records ‘if u want me’, ‘here’ & ‘blaquewerk’. on ‘return’ deadboy journeys further into uncharted territories, taking his music to the darkest recesses of disco and extraterrestrial synth-werk. the opening track ‘return’ finds the london-based producer taking cues from the likes of tangerine dream and klaus schulze with a gentle ambient opener that unwraps to reveal a beautiful and moving track. ‘des niles’ is a shimmering disco track built around an 80s boogie bassline, plus those killer deadboy vocal chop-ups that take us even deeper into the producers nighttime world. samples are worked to within an inch of their life on the floor-ready ‘yhvh’, whilst punchy bass and synth stabs take care of the rest. things then move swiftly on to ‘life code’, with the deadboy once again notching the tempo down and letting the track’s wistful oriental melodies ride out into the dark.
the first ever record released by the numbers crew, remastered and comes with 30 minute ricardo villalobos remix cut over two sides of vinyl to coincide with the numbers 10th anniversary. originally recorded in 1998 and released in 2002... 2x12 inch and full picture sleeve.
rustie returns with a release on numbers. triadzz & slasherr together make up a double a side single, his first record since the game changing intensity of his award-winning glass swords album on warp in 2011.
london staple deadboy returns for the first time since 2011s here, releasing new four track ep blaquewerk on 25th march. the release is the first of a set of many to shortly be announced, joining festival pleasure principle to form part of our 10th anniversary in 2013.
mosca is one of those people that can turn a crowd at the drop of a needle. anyone who has seen his energetic, all encompassing club sets can testify to his levity and the sheer scope of styles he touches on over the course of 60+ minutes. >done me wrong< and >bax<, the two tracks that make up his debut release for us, more than epitomize that approach. pouring his myriad of influences and musical passions into the one pot, we are proud to present you with two slices of freewheeling 4x4 mosca.
deadboys own brand of garage flecked melancholia rocketed out of the stables on the single sided >if u want me<, our very first release in early 2010, and the brighton based producer hasnt let up since, remixing artists like cassie, jamie woon and romy xxs creep.
lory ds idiosyncratic take on techno is an all-analogue assault on the senses, a soundtrack to the end of the world punctured by shards of acid and twisted metal soundscapes. a john carpenter for the rave generation, so to speak. the enigmatic lory is something of a legend in his native city of rome, where the former dmc champion was responsible for introducing his compatriots the sounds of techno, acid and hardcore with 5.000 strong raves featuring ritchie hawtin, underground resistance, joey beltram and lfo. his label sounds never seen was the soundtrack to these raves – an industrial yet sometimes beautiful vision of techno where drexciya, frankie bones and spk jammed in the roman sewers.
the next numbers release comes from the elusive north london production duo ill blu.
elusive may be a word that is easily chucked about in todays scene, but despite being regarded as one of the most feted uk funky / house production teams in the country ill blu rarely let go of their original material. theres a handful of remixes for underground and major label artists, the masterful bellion twelve inch for hyperdub and the odd appearance on pirate radio - thats pretty much it.
the meltdown ep consists of three impeccably produced club smashers guaranteed to tear the club up.
massive one from numbers that really does shows the connections between early 90s detroit and chicago and the current bass heavy house sounds coming out of london. getting plays from a diverse amount of djs too with kode9, shake, boys noize and minimal house guy luciano giving it props.
futuristic badness from jessie ware and sbtrkt, mashing up heavily swung uk garage rhythms, 80s boogie inspired basslines and a well sexy vocal. hot stuff and there is a dub version for the djs to get busy with. on the flip is a solo sbtrkt track called fright which has a late night detroit vibe but with added bass weight and swing.
numbers follow up the instant sell out that was redinhos bare blips with this red hot collaboration between two of the most exciting producers around just now - roska and untold. collaborations of this sort have a tendency to be a little bit underwhelming but on myth and long range the two producers have dug deep to come up with a perfect marriage of each others styles. this is house music as it should be - fresh, exciting, raw and banging. untolds grimey sub fit perfectly with roskas syncopated drums and the wailing horns on myth are gonna be stuck in your brain for days. one of the most exciting records around at the moment, dont sleep on it.
numbers finally unleash the mighty redinho. this limited debut ep contains 8 tracks worth of futuristic bass music styles and melodic electronics from this hotly tipped producer. with constant plays from hudson mohawke, props from anthony shakir and a mary anne hobbies session already under his belt, this is a man who looks set for big things.
different lekstrix is the next level house jam by mr mageeka. this track has a unique sound that cross pollinates the energy of uk funky with the minimal jacking rhythms of early dan bell and 90s relief releases. its backed with a storming remix from night slugs man lvis 1990. to put it simply, its club music that joins the dots between some of our all-time favourite musical movements.
the numbers assault on 2010 continues with this wicked ep from birmingham based producer src. src expertly blurs the boundaries between 80s electro-funk, grime, dilla style hip-hop and japanese video games
kavsrave is the sound of neon dipped, maximum power r&b as its dragged through the sewers and elevated to the heavens. numbers have established their rep exponentially in a few short months, and in jamie kavanagh have unearthed their own a&r gem, equal parts thick woozy funk and glycerine chanteuse aromatics - george clinton serenading beyonce in the great sugar glass elevator. growing up near croydon alongside joy orbison and a1 bassline, he was recommended to the label by the former, having put on raves and explored cubase with the two throughout his teenage years
first release on the all new numbers label is a collaboration between dress 2 sweat, stuffrecords and wireblock. if u want me is threatening to be the first underground hit of 2010, already finding its way into the boxes of kode9, martyn, sinden, joy orbison and modeselektor, who included it as the opening track in their recent resident advisor podcast. the limited edition vinyl release will feature music on side a with a laser etched b side.
