vinyl only. alex took his first musical steps by studying piano and guitar at the young age of 6. his fascination for the more outlandish. experimental side of each instrument corrupted his lessons and sent him down a modular synths and tape loop composition wormhole. years later alex resurfaced. got himself clean and. through connections made while spending time as a vocal audience member (and sometimes uninvited participant) at lyman woodard. phil ranelin. and other tribe- and motown-linked gigs in cass corridor during the mid-1970s. spent time as a session musician for earth wind and fire. chic. and prince. it was only toward the mid-90s he found himself enthralled by the techno and house sounds of detroit and chicago so he went into the woodshed and came out firing electronic salvos.

the underdogg is the title of dj tre’s debut ep for hyperdub. he had two brilliant tracks featured on our dj rashad tribute compilation next life. but compared to other longterm members of the teklife footwork crew. he hasn’t released much. so we’re very happy to bring him out to play again here. tre has been about since the early days. born and raised on the south side of chicago. encouraged by the late dj rashad and his partner dj spinn. he has been making tracks since 1999. over a decade before footwork’s ascent to global popularity. on this ep his sound. for the most part is rooted in the speedy 4/4 of juke. it features a sparse and minimalist take on footwork but he’s got a knack of adding in tight little switches and details that keep the tracks moving as essential dance floor weapons.
tv showw is a new record label from paris. we are very proud to launch the label with an ep from one of chicago s most prolific and inventive electronic musicians : jamal moss a.k.a. hieroglyphic being or i.b.m.. among others. jai/mahl is his fresh new alias especially created for this ep. the three tracks are made for the dancefloor (four-to-the-floor) while not diluting his signature oddity made of sonic textures and damaged rhythms. moss calls his style -synth expressionism- or -rhythmic cubism.-

new 030303 release. john heckle s first one for 030303 starts off deliciously with translate- being a moody and melodic and bouncer that caters to a twisted dance floor. terix. the opener on the b-side is a beautiful reminder of derrick mays detroit. rhythm is rhythms kao-tic harmony in particular. the end of this record then. is like the end of most nights: with lots of melodies going on and a stomping rhythm hear me is by far the most mind bending track of this excellent 12inch.

los angeles based natan h and malta based artist owen jay return as gauss with their first ep of 2017. entitled resonator it offers more deep music with an electronic soul and is their fifth ep for their cultured label gauss ltd. the title track opens things up with a crunchy and impactful mix of weighty dub drums and spangled techno chords. it s a heavy track that builds in momentum and is sure to mangle minds with its skewed stabs and wiry electronics. shifted is a more fierce techno track with urgency in the kicks and a sense of anger in the coarse little snare explosions. more gurgling synths add weight and this one is a real stomper as a result. cutting ever more loose. odyssey is a mix of idm sound design. soulful synth smears and percolating electro tinged drums that are slick and futuristic. least squares completes this techno picture with spitting hits and claps. underwater chords and acidic sonar pulses that soothe the mind. this is an expansive ep that marks an exciting evolution in gauss s sound.

impulsive and intuitive hardware house & techno from vancouver duo minimal violence aka ashlee luk & lida p. the five tracks on night gym soundtrack urban landscapes. textured synths. heavy kicks. and dense polyrhythms come together to form the duo s own brand of outsider house. citing influence from both minimal synth and chicago house. night gym arrives hot off the heels of the duo s self titled ep on dublin based first second label which closely examined the intersections that lay between punk and techno. recorded in february/march 2016 in the duo s home studio. the instinctual nature of live work flow plays an important role in the duo s creative process. utilizing hardware (sh-101. tr-606/505/707. waldorf blofeld. juno-60. dx-21. mpc1000) in addition to sourced samples with final compositions compiled and manipulated in ableton. night gym is an example of the duo s diverse interests and collaborative nature. the duo recruited visual support from chicago based graphic designer kevin mccaughey of nonporous for the distinct imagery of night gym. as well he designed the poster that comes in the 12- and screen printed a limited run of long sleeve t-shirts available through boot boys biz.
the motorcity boys are back with loveit003 a fresh sounding 4 tracker strongly reflecting the diversity of styles found at their parties. lds kicks thing off with 909 to heaven. a jacking and balearic workout with a rootstrax. chicago style bassline keeping the floor hypnotised until the small hours of the morning. snares. kicks & rhodes is a more laid back jam. lazy warm pads and a slow winding sub bass rise and fall intermittently only to be interrupted by a lo-fi distorted bass that snaps you right out of that trance. nico brun opens the flip side with an absolute banger. hazily reminiscent of that 90’s warehouse rave. lds and nico brun close the ep with an atmospheric collaboration perfect to start or end the night with. splashy beats keep up the footwork whilst pulsating synth sounds slowly wind together and drop with a beautifully crafted sample that’s guaranteed to bring some sexyness back to the dance floor. this ep will definitely be a regular addition to your record bag to spread those warm summer party sounds. bruno farace early support: xdb (echochord / dolly): debut ep? congrats! end monologue is my favourite.
