best effort records jumps out of the box with their inaugural release ’number one’ - a selection of tracks that celebrate friends making music together. cold emotion are danny wild and rory stenning. the duo explore improvised club music using various keyboards and modular synthesisers. “toast” is a track taken from an extensive live recording session from 2015. accidental cv messages create unexpected cyclic baseline patterns while keyboard melodies float freely above jacking modular beats. the result is an imperfect. inspired club jam ready for any occasion. -cantao- pitches things down from the hypnotic frenzy of -toast- to offer a unique hybrid between computerized dub. subaquatic g-funk and triphop ambiance. canadian content! -manipulate me- is a collaboration between ivy barkakati and phran. the stark. alienated quality of ivy s spoken vocals & dark subject matter sounds even more claustrophobic and sinister backed up by the duo s frigid machine-funk. which is more in the spirit austere & icy 80s coldwave than modern house music. metric systems are a duo from somewhere in australia. the fathoms-deep -adaptation dub”. recored in 2009. is reminiscent of australia s after-hour dub technicians sheriff lindo or andy rantzen. look out for a full lp later in the year
quarion is back on drumpoet with an enchanting new ep that leaves nothing to be desired. cobblestone takes the dancer on a deep sensual journey. builds up continuously and subtly into a truly emotive peak. sunday night pt. 2 tops it by captivating with rhythmic chords. which remind of the early 90ies. jamaican morse is a driven drum track. spiced with dubby sounds and a higly addictive beat. once again. quarion proves his outstanding quality.

catalog number-yotsume 002- used as a missing number in long years is released as the 5th work of sasaki hiroaki’s yotsume-music. this “winter ep” is sasaki’s latest release.it includes a remix by stewart walker who is a berlin based producer and based on experience releasing distinguished labels such as force inc. tresor. m_nus. starting from sasaki’s track a1”winter” has a long dubby bass. a pad sound is covering this euphoric minimal work which rhythm comes and goes like a returning wave. it likes snowscape of japanese ink painting. b1”stewart walker snowflake mix” is a reconstructed “winter” landscape and soundscape by stewart walker’s minimalistic approach.the grain of the sound with the three-dimensional feeling scattered on the low-frequency. it conjures images of the snow piling over the white. chill earth.b2”over” shows the another aspect of sasaki’s emotional side. it has a simple but selective rhythm and matter-of-factly composition of piano and pad sound. which makes us feel the end of a long journey. it s quality and brilliant minimal house release is shown how each of these three tracks differ this time. vinyl only.
philippe cohen solal (of gotan project) celebrates the 50th anniversary of summer of love. covering one of its anthems “aquarius / let the sunshine in” of hair the musical which premiered on stage in october 1967. a complex but soothing modern reggae moombathon riddim carried by the ethereal harmonies of legendary jamaican reggae singer horace andy (massive attack. skylarking. ain’t no sunshine...) with a delivering coda sung by an empowering choir.
¡ya basta! records asked two legends of the underground scene. somewhat connected to the spirituality of the song. to remix this take. first with an afro house / deep-house take of the master of the genre @boddhi-satva. and jack of all trades. mashup virtuoso @jstar-1 (remixer of major lazer / dj vadim...) for a retro catchy drum n bass/uk bass remix. finally lazy flow and face-t deliver a dancehall filler of a remix.
after strong releases by jerome sydenham. guti. martin buttrich and the esteemed label leaders the martinez brothers. here we have remixes of stec and chris martinez own out put by first team players. mathew johnson gives us an energetic analogue workout. peggy gou gives us a wistful version of ‘h2 da izzo’ with retro drums. lush strings to give us a straight up. classic house cut. this is also tackled by mayaan nidim who gives us a stripped back. refined take as you would expect from a perlon artist. dj deeon takes on the buoyant ‘stuff in the trunk’ with miss kittin’s playful vocals.

only one month after the release of their first ep on mt on may 2018. vactrol park continue surprising. this time with a full lp in the shape of “music from the luminous void”.the album sees vp delve much deeper into more atmospheric realms. using modular synths and unexpected drum machine sequencing they leave the 4x4 beats behind in favor of off-world rhythms and ever growing bass.
..... starting with drops’s high frequency tension. laying on top of those heavy kick drums it keeps on growing and growing. from there it moves to the “end of the party” groove that is novikov’s notation. and its trippy monotonic rhythm. the a-side ends with the heavy sampled ambient track macbeth. bringing forward that mesmerizing flute solo by italian artist luca spagnoletti yet succeeding in avoiding the kitsch. and with a touch of class.
.....the b-side delves even deeper into ambience and atmospheric muzak. starting with bells. that features again spagnoletti on flute. then we get into the real gems of the album - anstruther and glove. the first is a pure trip into modular psychedelia and repetitive jazzy-like drum rhythms. creating tension right from the start and plays with it throughout the track before decaying slowly into glove. which is in sense both the catharsis and the decompression session of the album. like a 2018 version of vangelis. this track’s soundscape will keep you dreaming with your eyes closed long after the album ends.

it s been around three years since jpattersson opened up a whole new horizon of formerly unheard possibilities between the worlds of dub and techno. a lot has been happening ever since. and that’s very noticeable on his second album. it still has all the signature elements of jpattersson: there s his dreamy. virtuous trumpet play and his witty vocals. there s his dubby delays and heavyweight beats which often line up in a downbeat rhythm. however. besides his fanfares there s now also many folks. many musical friends who contribute to the vibe of this album. there s a track with berlin mc longfingah. latin-flavoured rhythms from polish reggae and dancehall producer dreadsquad as well as a stylistically wide range of remixes that reflect the symbiotic cooperation and mutual inspiration of these last years.

by day he guides lasers into position using precision equipment. at night he crafts raw house music. welcome to the unusual world of reflection port assembly. we got to know one another through a few brief. slurred encounters in the smoking area during the fabled forza italo night or at the aptly named gary’s gang. pretty soon it was clear that he had impeccable taste. like that record that featured coil and ice t. one sunny friday afternoon in june. he tore himself away from guiding the lasers and we met up in the city centre. the light breeze did nothing to dissuade the office workers from gathering outside the pub for sneaky post-work pints. surrounded a sea of grey and blue business attire. we agreed to make ‘retribution’ the second release on first cut. featuring three cuts. it spans house. electro. boogie and even some detroit techno influences. but ’retribution’ is more than the sum of these parts. unlike his precision-based day job it’s rough and imperfect. flawed but warm. messy and charming - like a snapshot of every day life in dublin.

landing as gene tellem s first record. -who says no- is a product of change. new relationships and collaborations emerged out of a time when familiar spaces in montreal were disappearing. this state of ambiguity. and improvisation inspired the freeform structures and subtle transformations heard in these tracks. while -moving in this way- and the title tune push forward with intention. -soul of man- floats between lush drones. a pitch bent lead. and a pair of haunting chords. -we were all being tested in different ways. and trying to figure out what would happen next...-

... one day he found a great. reddish slab of stone on the side of the road. it shone. could he transfer the very same color onto himself? he searched and found a rough surface which he used to scrub the stone hunk until there was a pile of crimson powder. mixing it with water. he coloured his body with the shinning red. standing there painted. he began to sing. as he sang. the stone slab on which he stood opened and swallowed him up. even today. on passing this stone. they say one can still hear the song of the enchanted. from below the surface of amsterdam s underground. depth over distance will release its first ep of spaced out grooves conjured by eversines. four jams covering the spectrum of deep electronic music ranging from slow building anthems (pyramids) and acid fuelled dubs (transition portal and vultures) to the celestial closing pads of the other side signifying the first stop on this journey.
all tracks were produced during a one-off session on the shores of bretagne. more specifically on le cap de la chevre. using solely a mpc. a korg 03rw and a tx7. all connected to a portable generator. bottles of white wine and a consequent amount of oysters were also directly involved in the process.
home recorded above a lawyers office and next door to a brothel. the retrospective is lead by the earth shattering digi stepper rock steady. originally intended for an abandoned dub album. rock steady and fantasy dub were saved from the cutting room floor by australian cd-only compilations on creative vibes and vital collective clan analogue. while green river was never released. now demanding wider appreciation. the dubs finally find union with green man’s new york hip hop/dancehall style. lifted from his second solo album the blue hour vol. 3: deep blue. humbly excelling in all electronic forms. rantzen helped guide techno-rave duo itch-e & scratch-e through the 90s with paul mac. winning the inaugural best dance release category at the 1995 aria awards. mac thanked all of sydneys ecstasy dealers. without whom this award would not be possible. while rantzen stayed at home. the two would also operate incognito as boo boo & mace and screensaver. often collaborating on looney dubs with sheriff lindo - the master of seismic shocks down under. rantzens earliest work stretches back to pelican daughters. an ensemble who proliferated industrial-leaning ambient and tape loop experiments
as a contrasting follow-up to our first single from rooteo & mahura’s metta album. the second single on made in green records keeps the format intact with entirely different results. deadbeat’s remix on part one was both respectful and subtly transformative. on part two. new york’s upcoming max mcferren. whose busy 2015 included eps on ultimate hits. allergy season. and 1080p. brings us a startling reinterpretation of album closer harmal very much in keeping with the vein of raw. aggressive house coming from brooklyn since that scene’s resurgence. the original version of harmal finishes the album in fine style. blending tablas. celestial electronics. and short melodica phrases that gradually swell with layers of vocal samples and orchestal pads before reaching a climax and slowly dying away in gradually receding layers of ambient electronics. mcferren’s remix leads off with only a bare framework of techno percussion. the entry of a sampled section of melody from the original signals a rapid transition to more abrasive territory. with sheets of metallic noise slashing through the high end. short vocal syllables stuttering. and an insistent bass pulse building up and breaking down with at least one element constantly in motion.
tom flynn marks his first appearance on exit strategy. starting off with a strong package of four tracks. each of them tends towards a slightly different side of his ecstatic and clean production style - making this a very coherent well balanced collection of killers.
