“remains”. magda ter’s sophomore album. has been created over the past two years changing its shape several times. it is a compromise between static. experimental background music and soothing techno glimpses with some samples of acoustic instruments. as a result. the album has contemplative colours. although hidden beneath the surface of seemingly uninvolved sounds.
due to this fact ter’s music cannot be pigeonholed. one can even say that “remains” leaves the audience with a huge amount of space for their own feelings and interpretations of the individual sequences. while simultaneously dropping some vague cues. thus. we are dealing with one of the most intriguing electronic polish releases in recent years.
polytechnic youth enter the fray once again. continuing an already productive year (these new 45s are 4/5/6th releases in 2018 already!) with a trio of quite brilliant yet totally different 45s.
alpár aka hungarian bálint zalkai. is the co-founder of farbwechsel. the budapest based record label. and his own recordings of electronic compositions (often built upon random looping sequencers in a minimalist style) are key to the label’s release output thus far. his goal as he sees it is to “catch a random pattern. loop it and build up a piece with that randomly pulsing theme. just let to flow the voltages and sound waves and try not to disturb them or change their basic behaviours”.
the two tracks here were recorded with this approach very much in mind. the atmosphere of “mejiro” is “not unlike a bird observation. attempting to find the right spot. getting closer and closer to the bird. which almost controls you and your movements as you attempt to near it”. whereas “wakayama” is a more direct piece. and maybe the most melodic song alpár ever recorded. while “mejiro” is a woozy. cautious piece. “wakayama is like a tropical fruit or the ume. (the japanese apricot). colourful and full of flavour yet -with thanks to- the slowly humming theme in the background. an element of sourness grips you at the back of your tongue as it ends!

the second of march’s trio of killer polytechnic youth 45s is a mighty extended piece of slow building berlin school-esque electronica extended over 2 sides of a 33rpm disk. recorded by adam leonard. initially from a batch of 18 tracks recorded at varying times over the last six years.
“entkommen” is his first release for the label here. and both artist and label rather liked the idea of one extended track across two sides of a 45. whereby the listener must flip the disc at a half way point to continue the piece. it struck us as increasingly unusual and works a treat here...
adam has amassed a number of acclaimed releases in varying styles. and across a number of esteemed labels over the years. last year’s full band release “invaderband” being shortlisted for a northern ireland music prize 2017 and was 6music recommended. not to mention previous releases in collaboration with the owl service and p.g six.
his electronic home recordings are all well worth investigating and polytechnic youth proudly releases the first fruits of those sessions right here. a numbered. limited edition vinyl only 7” hand numbered to 250 copies.

chreal01 is the debut project by scottish producer chaotic reality exploring a meditative side to techno. written over the course of several months spent living in new york as a resistance to the frenetic pace of a busy environment. chreal01 contains four tracks that repeat. oscillate and soundtrack a more centred existence. inspired by shinichi atobe. avalon emerson. newworldaquarium / ross154 & the 7th plain. each track in this self-released record is named after its sequence and operates on a slower tempo. focussing on melody and sound design. with aim to investigate the space between dub techno and early trance. track one opens with gentle dancing chords developing over 7 minutes. with subtle nods to echospace and black dogs otaku over a punchy kick and warm sub. reverb-licked stabs pass softly in and out the mix and ride over a homogenous chord range. highlighting points in the melody and meandering back into the ether. two has an introspective focus. rarely reaching more than two kicks per four bars. an arpeggiated lead centres the composition. slowly developing over a thick bassline. distant snaps and pops season the track and highlight the empty breathing space intentionally left in the production. on the b-side. three is characterised by heavily saturated kicks softly thumping under a bubbling melody. broken by echo-delayed stabs varying in form. filter depth and feedback timing. on the closing song four. chaoticreality develops and sculpts a stack of delayed chords creating a progressively elevating soundscape. the lead melody chords layer and discord changing thickness. shape and form throughout with pseudo kicks acting as a complimentary melody. here. cr plays with space to creating a hypnotic spacial production akin to digital justice or the orb. with the intention to take the listener to a transcendental state. chreal01 is housed in a popset sleeve & hand stickered
paper tree sneaked out into the world for a moment a few years back and then vanished. lee burridge loved the track so much that he continued to harass rebelski. sometimes standing outside his window in the flower bed. for weeks on end until he finally agreed to let lee release it on all day i dream. not content with a single track lee went back to rebelskis garden and tapped on the window repeatedly until he agreed to make some more beautiful tracks. obviously pestering producers in this manner bares fruit. the paper tree ep ranges from a beautiful solitary solo piano piece that wouldn t be amiss in a british period piece drama where someone dies unexpectedly leaving the survivors to deal with it. all the while maintaining their stiff upper lip. fly the kite made us want to go outside and do just that. so we did. it was epic. circles and squares joins paper tree as one of those dance floor moments best experienced with ones eyes closed. myriad is the sound of a young lady robots jewelry box (yes. we predict robots will be wearing jewelry in the future) that she(bot) pines to hear when she s all grown up and rusty. omoshiroi is. well. its just so damn pretty. good work rebelski. good work.

fayze came of age in windsor. ontario. a diverse. gritty canadian city in the immediate shadow of detroit. during the 1980s. this fortunate geography placed the local scene in the inner orbit of the emergent detroit techno scene. from that starting point. fayze fell deeply in love with experimental. original sounds. today. his innovative. genre-defying soundscapes flirt occasionally with global schools like avant-pop and krautrock. but his sound is all his own. fayze s new music uses vintage analog synthesizers. which he s been collecting since the early 1990s. to build organic. textural compositions. an idiosyncratic collection of ambient. dreamy soundscapes. the album features inspired collaborations with detroit. windsor. and toronto artists. its myriad influences include aphex twin . stereolab . led zeppelin . and boards of canada . a well-travelled creative professional by day. fayze previously made music with marc houle and marshall sfalcin of king kool flipped . this is his first major solo project.
slow glass is not only the debut release by le frère it is also a very personal diary of the last two years of his life. all four tracks are based on recordings. samples and ideas he collected while travelling the world. with the concept of slow glass in mind le frere tried to catch moments of his life without stripping them of their dynamic and evanescence. the ep starts with lots of positive energy and light but already reveals glimpses of the shadows that slowly emerge throughout the following tracks. nice is a lightly humming version of an (almost) innocent summer morning. it s a collage of field-recordings. synth-pads and manipulated guitar sounds. candid is a light and open dialog between a simple guitar theme and a playful synth-arpeggio. v1b1n creates the dense atmosphere of a rainy caribbean afternoon dominated by field recordings and everyday noises. nttt8-sets a counter point to the previous three tracks as the energy of le frere s travels cumulates in nttt8. making it a more dance-floor oriented piece carried by a dark and heavy bass-line and almost rave-sirens.

the grand. sweeping sonic explorations of “pretoria”. from john matthias and jay auborn’s 2017 album “race to zero”. are given new life on this four-track remix ep.
moon gangs (better known as william young. keyboardist in bristol-based electronic outfit beak>) takes the reins first. delivering a thunderous take on the original’s faster-paced second half. typically of the artist. the track builds and builds in intensity. climaxing with an apocalypse of emotional. layered synths.
bristol’s cuts strips back the elements for a much darker reworking. a single. repeating piano note echoes into wide. open space alongside the original’s antique violins before clattering percussion and synths enter the mix for the most foreboding turn of the release.
closing the ep. former mogwai member john cummings also bases his reinterpretation around the original’s piano. but where cuts leans on moody darkness. cummings take is more upbeat. courtesy of a driving four to the floor kick and fidgety. high-pitched piano.

this initial release on the new futurepast label marks davy’s first output as a producer. crystallizing his endeavours in the studio and bearing witness to his long-standing experiments in electronic music. built between london and berlin over the last four years. the long now lays down the blueprints for following ventures on the label: using old and new gear to create unique. obscure soundscapes both outside of memory and away from nostalgic projections of lost futures. in a timeless and precise collaboration. davy has brought together two historical figures for this release: 1990s r&s records associate david morley mixed the tracks. while simon davey of the exchange lent his renownedmastering skills to the project. temporality. time travel and perception are key concepts for davy. and not only in the ep’s title. the four stripped-down tracks move forwards. sidewards and backwards in a bid to get us lost – not in space but in what time might sound like should we be swimming through it. mysterious and ageless synths mesh with the beats of an unnamed drum machine under davy’s control. we move through a non-linear story told by three distinct forward-thinking techno titles: no memories planned. circular weeks and causal loop. finally. the titular ambient track pans out cinematically over the images left in our heads: an invitation to begin it all again in the long now...
the next collaborative release between freeride millenium and pauls musique is a terrific two-tracker from manchester artist joseph louis harland manning under his new alias los angeles with the 7? vinyl release artwork designed by daniel rajcsanyi as part of his ‘baby exhibition in austria. joseph louis harland manning was the drummer of the band wu lyf and is involved in projects like los porcos. the mancunian boyband menage a trois and dream lovers. under his other aliases he released on aficionado. cracki. ocean records and is it balearic? sub label u?ber as well as having made music videos for molly nilsson. here he is fine form across a pair of delicate and moving synth tracks. opener ‘lamour is a gentle cut that starts with celestial chords and wide-open expanses of synth before a buried deep groove slowly comes to the fore. breathy vocals also add to the loved-up. dreamy feel and the whole thing carries you away in a majestic reverie that shifts from ambience to new age house. the track features the artists own field recordings from the streets of berlin. twisting up sounds from the sidewalk into percussive notes that give an organic feel. the perfectly soothing second offering is ‘i wanna go to heaven is a gorgeous synth piece that suspends you in a crystal clear blue sky on a warm summers day. chords are smeared and stretched whilst angelic. wordless vocals drift by. it is the sound of a blissful passage to the afterlife and will leave you feeling cleansed.

next up on francis harriss newly-founded record label kingdoms comes something very special from brooklyn-based film composer. songwriter. producer and performer leah lazonick. movimenti della luna doro (movements of the moon of gold translated from italian) is a four-track ep from one of the most exciting musicians and performers around - a beautiful quartet of contemporary classical music with a twist. lazonick is something of a polymath. having composed and conducted orchestral and electronic scores for short films and commercials as well as being a classically-trained pianist. lazonick is also a connoisseur of analog synths and vintage drum machines. and will release a second ep focussing on these passions during the course of 2018. here we are treated to three luscious works for piano and string quartet. written for a one-off performance at studio off interarts. an art gallery in montreal. the piece was performed in a forest-like immersive environment. and was originally called in a forest (a piece in three movements). lazonick performed the piano parts along with a string quartet she had assembled for the performance/recording. lazonick explains: as opposed to most of the other songs/compositions i have written. i have no concrete sentimental story behind writing this piece. the motivation. inspiration and overall idea behind composing it was of a more technical nature. attempting to relay the music in my head at its purest form. without any compromises. by primarily making use of melodic and harmonic dissonances whilst still keeping the content captivating. musical and continuous.

martin kohlstedts zweites album nacht (2014) bezieht sich direkt auf den vorgänger und ist dennoch die verkehrung seiner perspektive nach innen. hat der komponist in tag (2012) noch verspielt fragen gestellt. folgen jetzt in aller konsequenz neun monologe. diese reduzierten stücke sprechen mit einer unterdrückten ruhelosigkeit. distanzieren sich aber vermehrt vom leichtfertigen. in ihnen arbeitet kohlstedt hart an sich selbst. repetition und rhythmische verwandlungen entwickeln eine nach innen gerichtete dynamik. aus dem entstehenden sog befreit sich die -nacht- immer wieder neu. selbst in ihren schwerfälligsten momenten. und unterbewusst möchte man daran glauben. sich festhalten an diesem gerüst. noch während es anschlag für anschlag konstruiert wird. ein ankommen ist für martin kohlstedt aber noch utopie. die nacht erzählt vom suchen nach einem passenden ort dafür. sie ist deswegen nicht immer leicht zugänglich vertraut sich aber ihren hörern bedingungslos an. persönlicher können moderne kompositionen nicht werden.

boris bunnik is no stranger in the world of electronic music. he released several albums and ep’s under a variety of monikers since 2007 on labels like delsin. shipwrec. frustrated funk and his own transcendent imprint. fauxpas musik welcomes him for a new project called severnaya.
originally hailing from the island of terschelling. the most northern and remote part of the netherlands he now made a piece of music dedicated to this special place. severnaya means north in russian and refers to the bright frozen landscapes of the northern archipels. boris often plays with the influences and elements of ambient in his music. if we have to believe the man himself. polar skies is his most personal sound trajectory to come from his mind. drum programming is scarce and what remains is a lush and profound listening experience floating on scapes and melodies. we clearly hear his roots and intentions represented in the airy. tranquil sound design of this new album project. things sound spacious. and life is at ease in these melancholic compositions. crispy crackling percussions and icey pads place you in the midst of a resonant arctic landscape. you can hear influences drawn from producers like biosphere. pub. brian eno but we also hear more contemporary influences from modern day film composition but most of all we here boris his own signature. the tracks were composed over a couple of years (2015-2017) in a more contemplative mindset. at some point this selection formed a consistent piece of music and as a result you hear his most personal and fragile works to date. fauxpas musik is proud to release this new project in 2018. written and produced by boris bunnik aka conforce at the pasadenaoceanlab studios special thanks to family. friends and fauxpas musik for their support. this release comes in 180g vinyl and a hot foil stamping on the cover. vinyl tastes better...
mandala trax aka shingo suwa and dj mori is releasing a first ep on merkur schallplatten. shingo has established the label in 2008. dj mori is working as resident dj at suicide circus berlin. they often performed at many clubs in the city. their first collaboration includes two different versions of rave influenced techno remixes by anna bolena. anna is music producer. promoter and video maker. she is an underground activist since the 80 s. she runs the label idroscalo dischi since 1999 and since 2005 the video production company idroscalo digitale. they both are working as resident for buttonÆs party at ://about blank. a1. their very first track. is called 11pm. the main solid synth line features deep kick drums surrounded by dubby industrial effects in the background. on a2 we find a heavy bottom groove. surrounded by echoes in a dark atmosphere. hand claps and white noises are driving any techno floor. the b side includes two different version by anna bolena. she produced some 90Æs rave structures affected by her experimental senses.
