following the release of synkro aka joe mcbride collection of his formative early works earlier this year. apollo recordings is proud to present a brand new ep that draws on the rich heritage of library music. despite having come up during the dubstep era mcbrides music has always resisted easy classification - hand in hand sees him shift his musical focus in a yet more cinematic direction. mcbride explains: the record was inspired and influenced by my love of electronic 80s uk library records like the chappell av series. bruton. soundstage & de wolfe music library. theres a lot of synth work that carries on from my album using my trusted juno-6 / sh101 / jx8p combo with the addition of drum samples via an old akai s2800 i purchased recently. most sounds ive made from scratch on hardware based on sounds used in the library records i mentioned above along with a few cheeky samples.- synkro s signature expansive atmospherics are still very much present. but now they have been burnished by soaring synth pads and pulsing drum tracks that call to mind the haunted melancholy of john carpenter or contemporary such as legowelt or andy stott. rhythmically hand in hand sees mcbride moving somewhat away from his usual off kilter programming inspired by 2-step and garage. embracing the steady pulse of 4:4 which turns out to be an effortless fit.

following swayzak’s gestures of a sycophant. the third release on beatnik boulevard sees the return of appleblim after he launched the label in style with the conch shell motives ep. this time the berlin-based producer is working alongside long-time collaborator and fellow bristol bassweight alumni komon – the duo have turned out eps for aus music and apple pips in the past. but this 12” represents the first new material from them since 2014. the heads-down. meditative lilt of appleblim & komon’s bristol past looms in the shadows on this ep. but it’s shot through with a steely. modernist dance floor bite and high-end sound design. know yourself pivots around crafty. 2-step kinked drums but there’s plenty of space afforded to atmospheric synth surges that plunge the track into a mood-altering headspace just to the left of the conventional dance floor

the dynamic duo of second storey and appleblim return to r&s for another slice of their off kilter dance floor alchemy second storey & appleblim bring their detroit machine rhythms and sleek electronic grooves back to r&s for the ‘gimme 6’ ep. since their initial forays in 2015 on the label in the form of a trio of eps and a compilation that introduced the world to their unique strain of cyborg funk. the duo have gone on to refine their sound to ever new creative heights. this new ep is the fruit of that hard work - opener. and title track ‘gimme 6’ sees their production grandiosity hit new highs - swooping pads soon give way to slurping twisted bass and mechanistic hi hats before a collapsing breakdown freakout twists the trad techno blueprint into exciting new shapes. ‘levying rooks’ injects a sense of frenetic levity - serrated bass and scudding percussion. while ‘aperture‘ is drenched in swooning pads and fizzing. flanged out hats underpinned by relentless mutant kicks. too often modern electronic club music is all too content to sit heavily within genre boundaries. and ‘rules - ss&a’s gleeful disregard for categorisation and innate sense of melody. harmony and rhythm make their offerings the perfect antidote to the jaded veteran techno fans as well as the gleeful new jacks

for the 9th instalment in dba s dubs series ikonika and big strick square off head to head. following the hyperdub artist s genre-defying distractions lp earlier this year. oral suspension is an instrumental which switches rough-shod between a uk halfstep crunch and a hoop dreams era chicago bounce. on the flip big strick brings his characteristic smooth groove to the table for the remix. which. though laidback. is nevertheless bound to energise the dancers. evading the ubiquitous pigeonholes. ikonika has variously been known for her dubstep innovations. her uk funky experiments on hum and buzz and her post-urban sketches for hyperdub. meanwhile though an interest in techno and specifically the sounds of the midwest have underpinned her work.

naoki e-jima s disc shop zero record store in tokyo holds a special place in our hearts. since before idle hands was even established. when rooted records was king. the cosy. liberally stocked shop has served as a sympathetic outpost for bristol s rich culture of soundsystem music. over the years. naoki has championed all the best music to come from our fair city. from smith & mighty through to pinch and pev and on to the output from our own humble label. it s been a vital connection to help our music reach the right heads on the other side of the world. in turn providing a platform for our most treasured artists to gig and further the cause of the music we love. as a thank you for all the support naoki has shown bristol music over the years. idle hands has put together a special tribute 10inch of tracks that chime with his particular musical tastes. shining a light on some complementary gems that might have otherwise never seen the light of day. its also a chance to fill in the missing idle013 catalogue number – fortunately. the number 13 does not represent bad luck in japanese culture. on the a-side. the mighty (pun intended) rob smith takes to a track from outboxx s debut album. originally intended for a remix 12inch that never came to be. in his learned hands. lost soul becomes a shimmering stepper marked out by beautiful cascading arpeggios and of course plenty of fulsome bass. with arresting fragments of vocal drifting in and out of the mix for good measure. rob s status as a true legend of bristol music needs no explanation. but his presence here is furthermore because naoki is such a fan of his music. on the b-side. atki2 makes a welcome return to the label after bringing a classic ray of sunshine to idle hands on the second single we ever put out. as well as being a big release for us. it was apparently huge at disc shop zero. so it feels right to bring the effervescent hes royal to this 10inch release. with a sunny disposition at heart. these two tracks make sense sharing a 10inch. but it s even more fitting that they sit side by side as we doff our caps to a true hero of the global underground. thanks. naoki.

emlock founder untold is back on the label with his first vinyl ep since ‘doff’ on sub-label hblk back in 2015. this release follows appearances on last year’s #savefabric compilation. and more recently on ‘magic city iii’ compiled by mixpak boss jubilee. hek029 follows a rewarding period of a&r for hemlock that has so far delivered eps from bruce and parris. with several more scheduled to drop throughout 2017. ep’s two winding tracks are a natural progression from the fiercely textural drum work of untold’s previous singles and album ‘black light spiral.’ here the material is given more space to breathe and released from the grid creating a lighter more footloose feel. ‘tear up the club’ carries the weight of dmz era half-step using a loose web of elasticated breaks and builds to reveal a striking melodic line. on ‘watton res’ exotic tones are further compressed and expanded in sequence. encasing drum machine. keyboards and guitar work within a delicate shell.
