selected 3rd advent deal. valid till monday 12:00 met - the dynamic duo of second storey and appleblim return to r&s for another slice of their off kilter dance floor alchemy second storey & appleblim bring their detroit machine rhythms and sleek electronic grooves back to r&s for the ‘gimme 6’ ep. since their initial forays in 2015 on the label in the form of a trio of eps and a compilation that introduced the world to their unique strain of cyborg funk. the duo have gone on to refine their sound to ever new creative heights. this new ep is the fruit of that hard work - opener. and title track ‘gimme 6’ sees their production grandiosity hit new highs - swooping pads soon give way to slurping twisted bass and mechanistic hi hats before a collapsing breakdown freakout twists the trad techno blueprint into exciting new shapes. ‘levying rooks’ injects a sense of frenetic levity - serrated bass and scudding percussion. while ‘aperture‘ is drenched in swooning pads and fizzing. flanged out hats underpinned by relentless mutant kicks. too often modern electronic club music is all too content to sit heavily within genre boundaries. and ‘rules - ss&a’s gleeful disregard for categorisation and innate sense of melody. harmony and rhythm make their offerings the perfect antidote to the jaded veteran techno fans as well as the gleeful new jacks

nice price deal !!! hotflush presents the full label debut of uk funky figurehead roska. following his appearance on the recent back and 4th compilation and seminal remix of untolds >just for you< in 2009. this release brings together two cuts that emphasize a healthy evolution of the roska style that has made such an impact on bass music in the last couple of years. retaining the customary hard-hitting percussion and raw syncopated rhythms. a slightly futuristic twinge moves us into more unfamiliar territory. with the energetic synth arpeggiation of >error code< backed by the spacier. dubbed-out >abrupt<.
for the 9th instalment in dba s dubs series ikonika and big strick square off head to head. following the hyperdub artist s genre-defying distractions lp earlier this year. oral suspension is an instrumental which switches rough-shod between a uk halfstep crunch and a hoop dreams era chicago bounce. on the flip big strick brings his characteristic smooth groove to the table for the remix. which. though laidback. is nevertheless bound to energise the dancers. evading the ubiquitous pigeonholes. ikonika has variously been known for her dubstep innovations. her uk funky experiments on hum and buzz and her post-urban sketches for hyperdub. meanwhile though an interest in techno and specifically the sounds of the midwest have underpinned her work.

“i’ve said it before. but dancehall and its influence on uk music has been a massive inspiration for me. going way back to hearing chris goldfinger on radio 1 playing music that was like nothing else i’d heard before. i love that fundamental rhythmic pattern. and i love how within the same world you can have some tunes that are built around the sweetest melodies and harmonies. and others that are built around super-tuff minimal drums and crazy squeeks and bleeps.
when it came time to build another ep for critical. i decided to link up with my good friend and long-time collaborator rider shafique. who has a much deeper knowledge of this music than me. and together create something that references both old and new dancehall. while still being playable in the kinds of sets i ve become known for. there’s no halftime and no chopped-up jungle breaks here - we wanted to make something really focussed and even disciplined - and hopefully we’ve succeeded.
big shouts to the vocal collaborators - super hyped to work with stush on a tune. irah came through with the righteous fire. and tiffanie malvo absolutely bodied her beat - but ultimate biggups have to go to rider. this wasn’t a project where i made the beats and rider voiced them - for pretty much every tune. we worked and reworked the riddims together. we’re both stoked on the results. and it seems like people in the dance feel the same way.” - sam binga

a software engineer at ableton by day. sieren’s love for uk influenced bass music and field recording and experimental soundscaping resulted in his apollo debut ‘static polymorphism’ a masterly ep of spaced out street-rave soul.
now returning with the five track ascension ep. frick has tightened and toughened up his sound somewhat (see the caustic bass glower of ‘slinger’). augmenting his starry eyed wonder with a firmer percussive underpinning and more driving tempos. however still present are his preternatural grasp of emotion and atmosphere that marked him out as one to watch - perfectly underscored by the heartbreaking beauty of the title track.
fellow apollo cohort synkro aka joe mcbride was instrumental in the curation of sieren’s debut static polymorphism ep on apollo. hand picking the tracks. as well as road testing them in his dj sets. this time mcbride goes one further. collaborating with frick on the track ‘lost you’ to memorable effect - the beautiful pads and ghostly piano are a perfect synergy of their complimentary skill sets.

naoki e-jima s disc shop zero record store in tokyo holds a special place in our hearts. since before idle hands was even established. when rooted records was king. the cosy. liberally stocked shop has served as a sympathetic outpost for bristol s rich culture of soundsystem music. over the years. naoki has championed all the best music to come from our fair city. from smith & mighty through to pinch and pev and on to the output from our own humble label. it s been a vital connection to help our music reach the right heads on the other side of the world. in turn providing a platform for our most treasured artists to gig and further the cause of the music we love. as a thank you for all the support naoki has shown bristol music over the years. idle hands has put together a special tribute 10inch of tracks that chime with his particular musical tastes. shining a light on some complementary gems that might have otherwise never seen the light of day. its also a chance to fill in the missing idle013 catalogue number – fortunately. the number 13 does not represent bad luck in japanese culture. on the a-side. the mighty (pun intended) rob smith takes to a track from outboxx s debut album. originally intended for a remix 12inch that never came to be. in his learned hands. lost soul becomes a shimmering stepper marked out by beautiful cascading arpeggios and of course plenty of fulsome bass. with arresting fragments of vocal drifting in and out of the mix for good measure. rob s status as a true legend of bristol music needs no explanation. but his presence here is furthermore because naoki is such a fan of his music. on the b-side. atki2 makes a welcome return to the label after bringing a classic ray of sunshine to idle hands on the second single we ever put out. as well as being a big release for us. it was apparently huge at disc shop zero. so it feels right to bring the effervescent hes royal to this 10inch release. with a sunny disposition at heart. these two tracks make sense sharing a 10inch. but it s even more fitting that they sit side by side as we doff our caps to a true hero of the global underground. thanks. naoki.

album of the week (mixmag). album of the week (the independent). the drive soundtrack with a rocket up its arse. (dj mag) - just three of the reactions to john bs latest >light speed< album from earlier in the year. a neon-soaked journey into one of the most epic drum & bass lps of recent times.

we are proud to present our second release by beat pharmacy aka brendon moeller aka echologist. a singular voice in contemporary electronic. techno. and sound system musics in his various guises. beat pharmacy tunes begin life as live hardware jams where reverb. echo and delay rule the day. and rugged textures rub against digital processing. in “density.” bass. kick and heavily reverbed piano skanks anchor an instantly enveloping soundworld of deepest dubwise ambience. from around hidden corners emerge the hiss of distant pistons and valves. sentient machinery working in complex relationships. wobbles. wubs and sweeps communicate across cavernous spaces. as strange rhythmic elements sputter and spatter. tangling and massing in double-time to the point of rupture. only to resolve into crystalline moments of suspension into gorgeous. neck-snapping drops. simply mesmerizing. and heavy in the dance. “everything to gain” is spun from the same heavy metals. with a sparser feel. processed voice. and a buzzing. repeating alarm figure that sounds like a submarine warning that the dive is getting too deep. too dangerous… music that is moving. powerful. evocative and kinetic. slotting beautifully into 140 sets while defying easy categorization or description. always following vision over fashion. this is why we love beat pharmacy.

manchester producer anz self-titled debut comes at the crest of two years scenewide hype around her breathless brand of uk club music. also the maiden release from local club night-cum-label chow down. the record is as much informed by anz time as the nights most in-demand resident dj as by her instincts in the studio.these are tracks shaped by a good few encounters with manchester s roiling 2 a.m. crowds. this isn t to suggest a uniform sound anz ear for interplay brings her many influences together in sprawling constellations of style. jolting to life on the bassline- and funky-referencing steel percussion romp panrico. the record then slows to a half-time 808 lurch on clanger. the flip sees loa flex dense polyrhythms and coarse sublow bass before fencin brings it home in a final flourish of crystalline synthwork
emlock founder untold is back on the label with his first vinyl ep since ‘doff’ on sub-label hblk back in 2015. this release follows appearances on last year’s #savefabric compilation. and more recently on ‘magic city iii’ compiled by mixpak boss jubilee. hek029 follows a rewarding period of a&r for hemlock that has so far delivered eps from bruce and parris. with several more scheduled to drop throughout 2017. ep’s two winding tracks are a natural progression from the fiercely textural drum work of untold’s previous singles and album ‘black light spiral.’ here the material is given more space to breathe and released from the grid creating a lighter more footloose feel. ‘tear up the club’ carries the weight of dmz era half-step using a loose web of elasticated breaks and builds to reveal a striking melodic line. on ‘watton res’ exotic tones are further compressed and expanded in sequence. encasing drum machine. keyboards and guitar work within a delicate shell.
