ras g and moresounds explore the outer reaches of sound system culture for dub-stuy’s new collaborative series of eps. brooklyn-based label dub-stuy kicks off 2018 with the inaugural release of a new ep series dedicated to unearthing and celebrating the outer reaches of sound system culture. taking its cue from the classic dub releases where two producers would face off with their own versions. dub-stuy’s meets series brings together artists who have a clear dub influence but do not operate solely within the sphere of the dub and reggae world. the first such meeting is between los angeles beat supremo ras g (brainfeeder. stones throw) and paris junglistic dub scientist moresounds (cosmic bridge. astrophonica).

the 70s saw a growing interest in so called dub versions. an approach based on deforming. stripping and rebuilding the original tune and came known as dub music. king tubby along with other dub wizards such as. lee perry & prince jammy. were responsible for this exciting new dimension to jamaican music. however. most of these dub albums were pressed in very small quantities and disappeared quickly. one of those albums is dub expression by errol brown and the revolutionaries. no gimmicks on this one. he uses simple echo and delay. a few vocals sliding in and out. separate instruments floating on top. with respect to the melody of the tunes. a mixture of dub and instrumentals. enjoy these super tracks!

recorded while gerald was in jamaica working on a project with lee perry in 1980. the master tapes of the four tracks that were recorded at the harry j sessions were only recently discovered. utopia was the only track that had been given a final mix back in the day. it was released on 7- on the black star liner later in the year and then reissued on partial records in 2014. the other tracks were never mixed until early 2017 when this task was undertaken by dougie wardrop. as well as mixing jerusalem (gerald did a later version of this tune for rej forte s jah works label in the early 1990s). working for the dollar and constant spring . it was decided that utopia should also enjoy a fresh mix.
isle of jura’s second longplayer reissue is an album from ingleton falls that touches upon ambient. dub. house and balearic styles and was originally released in 1991 as a limited run of 100 self distributed cassette tapes ingleton falls are andy hannam seymour and andy eardley from tyne and wear in newcastle. having come from a more traditional band background originally. ingleton falls was their electronic project and the result of a love of acts like dub syndicate. african headcharge. gary clail. the orb and the klf.

hugh ‘redman’ james is one of the greatest jamaican music producers of the late 1980s. raised in a musical household in the west kingston slum of hannah town. with his mother a sound system selector. redman gained his initial schooling in the music business from none other than king tubby. the legendary sound system owner and dub mixer that was responsible for voicing and mixing some of the greatest reggae of all time. after being immersed in sound system culture during his youth in the 1960s and 70s. redman began sitting in on sessions at king tubby’s studio. but migrated to hartford. connecticut in 1978 in search of steady employment. returning to jamaica a few years later. he established a popular sound system in kingston and began producing music with king tubby’s assistance in 1985. working with the roots radics during a time of great uncertainty in jamaican music. as the new dancehall style came to prominence. early work featured gregory isaacs. sugar minott and frankie paul. as well as rising stars such as little john and horace martin. then. following the computerisation of dancehall. redman began producing some of the most popular music of the day. crafting durable and complex rhythms with a broad team of players that included steely and clevie. augmented by members of the browne bunch and other players. redman helped establish a number of total unknowns in this era. including carl meeks. dave bailey and wayne palmer. and became a serious contender for king jammy’s crown. but the producer was ultimately frustrated by the dramatic changes to sweep jamaican music in the early 1990s. and subsequently retreated from the music industry redman international dancehall 1985-1989 compiles the best work from his glory days. with half of the twelve vocal tracks coming complete with corresponding dub versions.

devon lyon. born devon bailey. moved to kingston in the 70 s to live in trenchtown with his mum. his sister and his brother named dennis. dennis was working in the new kingston area on a construction site. dennis met a friend who worked at the construction site and that friend was the lead singer from the group the chantells. . dennis told the chantells lead singer that his brother was singing at home like he was singing everyday on construction work site. the chantells lead singer told dennis to bring his brother devon. one day. devon came with his brother devon and they met the three members of the group the chantells. they became friends. devon started to verse with them in the evening and they really like him style.

the house band of bunny ‘striker’ lee was formed in the mid-1970s by some of jamaica’s most prominent and musically expressive session players. the shifting core line-up spun off from the soul syndicate and thus typically featured earl ‘chinna’ smith and tony chin on guitar and bernard ‘touter’ harvey on organ. carlton ‘santa’ was the main drummer. but carlton barrett of the wailers band and ‘benbow’ creary were sometimes featured. most crucially. on bass. aston ‘family man’ barrett shifted to fully fullwood (and occasionally. earl ‘bagga’ walker). until robbie shakespeare took over. becoming the bandleader. the band was responsible for the popular ‘flying cymbal’ style that took jamaica by storm. and you can hear it in abundance on this killer dub set from 1975. its excellent cuts of cornell campbell and johnnie clarke material mixed at king tubby’s studio - a must for all serious fans of dub.
international reggae star alborosie returns with the dub version of his celebrated “freedom & fyah” album from last year titled “freedom in dub”. the distinctive production of these ten newly recorded dub mixes underscore alborosie’s skill and credibility as a master of dub. all tracks are produced and (mostly) played by alborosie and recorded at his shengen studios in kingston. jamaica.
roots vocalist barry brown has an inimitable style that has long made him a favourite of reggae enthusiasts. drawing from the popular phrasing of horace andy. but morphing it into his own delivery through the kind of wordless slurring that occasionally resembles the sound of a quacking duck. brown found his way into the jamaican music scene through the many amateur west kingston talent contests of the early 1970s. along with fellow aspiring talents such as johnnie clarke. sugar minott and the african brothers. and the mighty diamonds. he also honed his vocal skills on local west kingston sound systems such as tape tone. together with other young dancehall-oriented youth such as barrington levy. sammy dread. roy taylor and tristan palmer. there are still conflicting claims as to who was the first to record brown. with production veteran bunny ‘striker’ lee and sugar minott among the contenders. but in any case. during the late 1970s and early 1980s. he produced a range of captivating work for various producers. much of which is rightly coveted today. ‘ital rock’ appeared on barry’s 1983 lp i’m still waiting. issued by rocktone international. a spin-off of sugar minott’s black roots outfit. based in queens. new york (with a further branch in toronto). the b-side has dean fraser’s previously unreleased electrifying saxophone cut. rescued from dub plate obscurity by jah fingers.

ion din dorobanti is one of the many monikers of the ubiquitous producer ion dumitrescu from bucharest. his 7” single on pingipung shows the oriental influences on bass music in his hometown. this release carries the manele. romanias wedding music which dominates contemporary pop styles since 30 years. towards new sonic realms. on the two tracks. he drag psychedelia and analog electro into the manele-sphere. the first one presents a radical afro-electro rework of alex puș...tiu’s “mi-e poftă... de tine ră...u”. ion din dorobanț...i’s original production on the other side is a track pulsating on a 9/8 groove infested with synth nostalgia. all is spiced up by nicu chinezu’s on clarinet. ion dumitrescu is the co-initiator of the future nuggets label and its sub-label p-balans. they are both based in bucharest and run in heavy rotation at the pingipung office and in our dj sets. if he is not ion din dorobanț...i he appears as australopitecus oltensis or utopus as a producer. among his productions are the brilliant debut lp by steaua de mare. the first lp of the legendary band rodion g.a together with strut records (london). the raze de soare ep and both volumes of -sounds of the unheard from romania-. these two summer anthems are part of the ongoing series of 7”-releases on pingipung. other singles recently came from ya tosiba. sven kacirek. andi otto or f.s. blummbastic.

a-side discomix. one of the rarest and best wackie s 12inches. b-side previously unreleased wicked 70s roots! killer vintage bullwackies! the happy love song was originally released on a tribesman 12inch. one of the least known but most killer wackies 12inches of its day. a propulsive rhythm is behind the group licking back the tune cut by the iq s in jamaica a couple years earlier. the b-side was retrieved from tape. an unknown vocalist extolling the virtues of the roots rock reggae coming from wackie s studio in the turbulent new york city of the 1970s. a must have for all wackie s diehards. another level of the pyramid unearthed. and more to come!
during the mid-1970s. the aggrovators could do no wrong. this ace team of session musicians that was forged as an off-shoot of the soul syndicate were responsible for some of the biggest hits of the decade. recorded with bunny lees rising stars. such as johnnie clarke and his rival. cornell campbell. following on from the great shalom dub set of 1975. rasta dub 76 is another truly magnificent dub set culled from aggrovators hits (by johnny clarke. cornell campbell and others). this time. the entire album was given a scintillating mix-down at king tubbys studio by the great prince jammy. and the sonic excellence has stood the test of time. another must-have for all connoisseurs of dub.

mystica tribe is the musical alias of tokyo-based producer. taka noda. drawing on a wide range of influences from dub. soul. bass music. rhythm and blues mystica tribe has quickly been developing a very distinctive sound that exists in a weird. freaked out zone between dub and techno. noda is especially interested in deep. psychedelic music. and this is reflected in his productions. which are equally suited for late night listening sessions or bent. broken in dancefloors. his first track. meditation stick. was released in 2011 on dutch label sd records. backed by two remixes from label owners syncom data. this was followed by two more eps on sd records in 2013: stars are mine and flowers. artists like gilles peterson and 2562 have supported these well-received releases. and his track. his temple recently appeared on pangaea s fabric live 73 mix cd. in 2014. noda is launching his own label. mystica tribe records. through which he plans to continue developing his uniquely psychedelic take on dub and techno. his recent ep. lizard. was released on his label in 2014. jade eye ep was released on his label in 2016.

the “digital revolution” occurred in the jamaican music industry by a single rhythm called “sleng teng”. the responsible person for the rhythm was king jammy who was the owner and producer of the jammys label. the label dominated the scene between 1985 and 1989. and released a vast number of material. dub store records compiles the best of the 80’s heavyweight dancehall from the jammys catalogue. the collection consists of “disc one: vocals & deejays” and “disc two: instrumental dub version”. each disc features popular songs and instrumental dub versions on the “heavenless”. “love punanny bad” and “far east” rhythms. among others. they also include rare collector’s tunes like anthony johnson’s “dancehall vibes”. this is a crucial selection for all dancehall lovers.

tommy mccook to be leader of the skatalites in the early 1960s. he went on to become the chief exponent of rock steady as leader of the supersonics house band at treasure isle. mccook remained a key session player throughout the reggae era. and during the roots reggae heyday of the mid-1970s. his expressive melodies found particularly strong outlet. especially on the music he created for grassroots producer bunny ‘striker’ lee as a member of the aggrovators. the studio outfit lee hand-picked from the cream of jamaica’s musical crop. when enhanced by the adventurous mixing experiments of king tubby. the engineer that turned dub into an art form. instrumental aggrovators music became positively ethereal. yielding an exceptional listening experience. on king tubby meets the aggrovators at dub station. tommy mccook blows mean sax and flute over dubs of outstanding tracks by johnny clarke. cornell campbell. linval thompson. delroy wilson. and others greats. first issued on third world in 1976. this vinyl reissue comes complete with four thematic bonus tracks. and the whole disc makes for essential listening. reissued on lp and cd with bonus tracks!
the visionary musician and record producer augustus pablo made some of the most unique and individual recordings in the history of reggae. as with his friend and mentor. jackie mittoo. the man born horace swaby was of mixed indian and african heritage. and although his middleclass background might have pointed him in a very different direction. the lure of jamaica’s sound system culture captured him at a young age. particularly after debilitating health problems saw him drop out of school. he began recording as a session keyboardist as the 60s gave way to the 70s. but everything changed when a schoolfriend introduced him to the melodica. a small plastic keyboard operated by a mouthpiece. which he used on seminal recordings for producer herman chin-loy. credited to augustus pablo on release. during the early 1970s. pablo crafted melodica instrumentals for all of the leading reggae producers. scoring ‘best instrumental’ for ‘java’ in 1973. and launching the rockers label to showcase self-produced work at the same time. this multifaceted compilation. first issued on bunny lee’s attack label in 2005. compiles memorable melodica interpretations of some of lee’s greatest productions. recorded over dub cuts of immortal numbers such as cornell campbell’s ‘queen of the minstrel’ and john holt’s ‘my desire.’ reissued on lp and cd with bonus tracks!
