while quite a few people are obviously still dwelling in the achievements of munich’s disco era during the 1980s, it seems that another major part of the cities partying scene travels to the same clubs every weekend. here they are getting fed with the plasticized tech house trax that everybody wants, drinking vodka red bull until they almost pass out and walk - if they are still able to - home happily, oversaturated by non-inventive, but good selling music. so far the cliché. fortunately, reality looks a bit different, at least for the lovers of uk bass. in order to make people aware of the city’s flourishing developments in this scene, the grandmasters of ruffhouse and jahmoni records have teamed up for a limited 10”.

nice price deal !!! after a busy summer of festival dates and sun-drenched summer parties, hotflush are back to attend to their autumn release schedule, the first of which welcomes a new collaborative project from two anonymous producers, united under the guise of nefertt. both producers have become synonymous with a distinct and versatile approach to music-making. between them, they have covered everything from hip-hop, dubstep, drone, ukg, soul, jungle, broken-beat and electronica int he body of their own previous productions. this new collaboration sees the pair invoke a slightly more dance floor-orientated spirit, taking a marked step away from the heavily swung, nervy house / garage hybrids of their previous material, preferring to focus on irrestistible groove and lush melody.
dubtraxx is new on the scene, as is their label rhythm n vibe, but don t let that lull you into a false sense of security this is seriously heavyweight gear. soundbwoy request is especially dangerous, working plenty of dub, reggae and jungle motifs into a rugged garage structure and sounding utterly ruff in the process. towards 99 is no slouch either, albeit on a slightly housier tip than the raucous a-side. the 2000 tribute mix of next millenium meanwhile sneaks out a few of the eerie tones you d expect to hear around the time that dubstep first started to emerge.

tucked away in a now not-so-quiet corner of south east london, wholemeal have been quietly, unobtrusively getting shit done. wholemeal music’s freshman release hits the shelves this month featuring two cuts from yam records boss tom esselle and a hoofing remix from fellow south-londoner west norwood cassette library. skilfully treading the line between house, techno, and jazz, the a-side, until she spoke is a superlative exercise in light-touc h sampling and devastatingly effective rhodes work. it shuffles then stomps, hypnotises then elates, bringing together disparat e threads to create something for the head and the heart. the title track, garibaldi, maintains the light-touch sampling thread and then takes it to a whole new plane of drum-driven dancefloor detonation. twisting chord hits whirl around a savage interplay between bass and drums before dropping back to an elemental pounding, bypassing the brain and heading straight for the feet. long time wholemeal friend and serious contender for the nicest man in music award bob wncl has very kindly picked up garibaldi by the scruff of the neck, grafted an enormous pair of junglist balls onto it and kicked it screaming across t he dancefloor. this is about as peak-time as it gets. wait for the wall of bass after the second drop, its enough to stop you breathing.

whether conscious or not, it sounds like skudge-esque techno fused with his trademark hyperactive percussion, injecting the manni dee sound into a 4/4 mould without losing the rudeness.

on the follow up to their 2015 ep ‘dumela 113’, we reintroduce hyperdub producer okzharp and manthe ribane, an artist, dancer and model from johannesburg who has worked and toured with die antwood amongst other creative work.

bristol is a tight knit place and there has always been a healthy culture of collaboration in the city, lmye (lend me your ears) are the latet in that tradition. two friends who met, and for a period recorded above the idle hands shop on stokes croft. they made their debut on funkineven’s apron label earlier in 2016 with the ‘cali 76’. here they keep things closer to home with a release on idle hands.
‘manhattan’ is as indebted to ’70s us funk as it is to ’90s uk garage. a house tune that has turned heads on the various mixes it has found itself on over the last year.
over on the flip shanti celeste turns in a brilliant remix, one of her best we think.
berlin-based obstacle records returns for its second release with another ep that draws on uk garage heritage while offering its own fresh take via a trio of newer names to watch out for.the ep’s original track comes from lesus - a hitherto unknown name that splices its stripped down ghost-esque rhythmic backbone with an uneasy chiming melody. the a2’s remix from obi - another name to keep track of - retains the pace & 2step stylings of the original while combining it with a chicago house sensibility.on the b side we find two alternate versions from the mysterious prince of ethiopia. the 808 version mutates the track into a old school hip hop instrumental, with the aforementioned 808 sounds to the fore, replete with vocal sampels, record scratches and ray guns. the mt40 version takes those elements, loses the snarling bassline, and pins it all to a broken beat rhythm, once again underlining obstacle’s reverence for uk dance music culture & its desire to push it into surprising new territory.

fifty first recordings was created in 1994 out of a small but very productive studio in london called state 51 using the down time and the very talented engineers who had been brought together for state 51 s existing clients. state 51 was the go to studio for the likes of x-press 2, sharp, amalgamation of soundz. the engineers we worked with included mark woolford, james brown, james reynolds & mark yardley. fifty first recordings soon found a name for itself and was very quickly at the forefront of the new generation of uk garage music. we produced and released music in the 90s, for over 7 years, with the likes of tuff jam etc. and later went to develop other imprints such as konnect / test press / unda vybe / spread love / tick etc., some in partnership with producers and managed artists.
disco tools 1° moods is the first ep of sampling moods records label. in this first release eddie lays down the defining ingredients of his label: disco-funk samples, distinct rhythms and recordings on tape. assisted by his mentors, eddie sets out to make his mad passion for a particular music (…classics from the paradise garage, the loft sounds and the disco-funk hits) amalgamate with a galvanising rhythmic construction, which is raw and rough.
as a piece of art that touches our mood, sam try to make us rediscover the power and love of the original classics, through the continuous repetition of the samples. the label focus on a specific musical need and want to offer a contemporary garage house, raw and essential interpretation of some rare groove hits and other disco classics. the choice to add only rhythmical scores is due to enhance and exploit the sample itself.
nordic ice meets spanish fire in the latest offering from fine grains records collaboration series. blais is a split ep featuring norwegian skweee boss beatbully and barcelona-based machine funk don fitzroy north. the release is complete with three distinct remixes by young scottish grime producer inkke, synthetic funk master joe howe (fka ben butler & mousepad) and one of the finest contemporary beats producers this side of the atlantic, mwëslee. the artwork comes from norwegian graphic artist halvor bodin. blåis , one of over 100 nordic words for snow and ice, occurs when snow falls on a glacier, is compressed, and becomes part of the glacier. over the course of 8 tracks, beatbully & fitzroy north squeeze the maximum from their respective mpc & synth setups to deliver an unpretentious and fun mix of synthetic funk with a punch. moments of minimality, sweet harmonies, bleeps, squeaks and bass are compressed into a gleaming crystallised form
the second ultimate hits instalment is from max mcferren. four tracks covering everything from dan bell inspired house to uk influenced rhythm tracks for the floor. strictly limited to 300 copies w/ hand printed sleeves.
