after a year’s hiatus optimo music disco plates returns with the first of several planned releases.
first up is long time friend phil kieran with an ep made specifically with optimo in mind. it has been tried and tested over recent months and more than ticks all our boxes. we feel confident it will tick yours too.
phil says “the ep was recorded in my house and made up of mostly live percussion performed live by thomas tettey annang. originally from ghana. he moved to belfast some years ago. it just so happens his wife is a close friend of my sisters and that was the first introduction. thomas now runs -releasing rhythms” here in belfast teaching drum classes.
we used a wide selection of traditional african drums that all have their own name. each one has a style and a sound. the rhythms used in this record would stem back to south american rhythms but using african drums. this was a sound and rhythm that influenced early post punk records in new york and still has an influence on dance music today.”

new leipzig label kontra s inaugural record presents a richly diverse collection of music that spans from world music infused house in the vein of many sex tags releases to break ridden. hard hitting. low-fi techno through to considered ambient music. despite the variation kontra is held together by a unifying underground style that every track shares. an excellent first release from a label that s sure to become a major underground player.

amsterdam s let recordings is back for a sixth release. titled communication . this time by jon hester. hester hails from chicago and minneapolis. and is now based in berlin. eps on dystopian and rekids spx have established him with a loopy and hypnotic techno sound that fits perfectly with let.

following mitÚ’s release of the most recent siempre ep (2015) and their two previous lps. the hit record balnear (2014) and debut potro (2012). the colombian jungle techno duo are dropping their new album. cosmus. in a break with the group’s tendency to record albums in relatively short time frames. the album was recorded over a longer period. giving greater importance to the sound recording of ideas at the time of their conception and less importance to post-production.
this time around. mitÚ took the time to let the record mature in the studio and get the ideas to come together. making an album in which the sound is far removed from that of their previous records. almost totally electronic and minimizing the acoustic parts. conceived with the intention of being performed live in its entirety.

with releases from lerosa. andy mac and piezo already under our belts. idle hands strides towards the summer with a transmission from a kindred spirit across the pond. area. sometimes known as m50. has been flying the flag for forward thinking electronic music in chicago for a long time. his radio shows on wnur have a distinctive quality one step to the side of the music his hometown is best known for. while his label kimochi sound has released incredible music from the likes of benjamin brunn. strategy and many more besides. as a producer area has been equally prolific since first emerging in 2007. from ethereal sound and steadfast to untilmyheartstops and sequencias. his various approaches to rhythm and texture are all bound together by a meditative quality that feels like a perfect fit for idle. on this single. both sides of the 12- continue the theme of dusty. dusky 4/4 area is most widely known for. locking on to a house groove while sporting the abstract atmosphere of techno. -rlgl- is an understated. emotional heater that uses looped up fragments as a counterpoint to the more lilting strings and static that bed the track. notice takes a more overtly melancholic approach with its lingering. heavily processed keys that drift in between a tough set of drums. theres a punch to the track that will translate beautifully to a big system. even as the melodics spell out a more intimate listening experience.

isolation diaries is argentinian producer alejandro mosso s 2nd album. it comes more than ten years after his debut. hiperborea in 2005. he says i think the album is warm. emotive and nostalgic but not dark nor sad. it is percussive and melodic but not laid back and balearic. it is tribal and organic but still very precise. as only electronic music can be. the grooves are strong and infectious and the sounds are rich and satisfying. resulting in music that sounds very organic and unpremeditated. the album is accompanied by a burnt freidman remix of the track isolation diaries. and a ricardo villalobos remix of deardrum.

saine & smith consists of jaja saine and leo smith. two talented djs/producers from stockholm. both are diaspora kids - jaja saine s background is in west africa and leo s in barbados. so their debut release is a kind of heritage reflection. with twisted elements of decadent scandinavian dance music. which echoes generally in their sound. a. lord vanlig - inspired from afro-caribbean traditional folk music from the 60s. a melodramatic blend of cheer and sorrow. with capturing and repetitive drums combined with a compact kick and sweet overlay of melodious keys and child laughter. b. sir viktig – a deep house banger with haunting ghost like pads. catchy afrobeat samples and vocal snippets.

* nan kolé. producer. dj and head of influential label on-the-rise. gqom oh!. returns to black acre for his debut proper with ‘bayefal’. after first collaborating with nervous horizon’s wallwork on his ‘facts / fyah’ 12” at the back end of 2016. * originally from rome. although now a resident of london. nan kolé has been a major player in the expansion of durban’s gqom sound after discovering it in early 2015. through his label. gqom oh!. he honed in on a network of south african producers operating out of durban. unlocking the keys to a world of music largely untapped by audiences outside of southern and western africa. * ‘bayefal’. he explains. was made while still living in rome and was inspired by a group he formed called pepesoup. which consisted of an italo-liberian singer. karima 2g. and senegalese percussionist and singer. moustapha mbengue. “for me. he (mbengue) was a mentor and taught me a lot spiritually but also mentally”. kolé explains. “and without his hard work i wouldn’t be here for sure. this track is dedicated to him. as he s a muslim bayefal.” a joyous. steadfast drum workout made in the carnival spirit. ‘bayefal’ also serves as an ode to his love for both west african rhythms and more specifically. the gqom sound. * on the flip. ‘malumz’ — backed up with two dark. brooding remixes by durban’s citizen boy and crew. formation boyz — is another track rooted in personal experience. “malumz is a tribute to my gqom oh! family”. kolé explains. “they call me malumz. which in zulu means ‘uncle’. the first time citizen boy called me ‘malumz’. it was overwhelming — i felt a change in my relationship with all the guys. because they started to treat me more as a family member. which meant a lot.” * the original mix. a stark. pulsing drum-track dotted with playful whistles and bleepy sampling again celebrates kolé’s fascination with the gqom sound. while first citizen boy and then formation boyz flip ‘malumz’ with harsher. grittier tones and crunching. industrial textures.

the bush is a homage to the place where i have lived for the last decade (askew road). the askew road itself is slowly changing so i wanted to document all the places that play a big part in mine and my families lives before they eventually get sold for more flats or tescos. first up was peckings studio 1 record shop. which has been on this stretch of road since the 1960s. next up is the mighty sun pub which became a local talking point when they sold the place because a sign sat in the window that announced this bup is close.
