over the course of four eps for numbers and creation of his own label ‘total fantasy’, deadboy has charted his own path far beyond the deep black space of mediocrity with previous records ‘if u want me’, ‘here’ & ‘blaquewerk’. on ‘return’ deadboy journeys further into uncharted territories, taking his music to the darkest recesses of disco and extraterrestrial synth-werk. the opening track ‘return’ finds the london-based producer taking cues from the likes of tangerine dream and klaus schulze with a gentle ambient opener that unwraps to reveal a beautiful and moving track. ‘des niles’ is a shimmering disco track built around an 80s boogie bassline, plus those killer deadboy vocal chop-ups that take us even deeper into the producers nighttime world. samples are worked to within an inch of their life on the floor-ready ‘yhvh’, whilst punchy bass and synth stabs take care of the rest. things then move swiftly on to ‘life code’, with the deadboy once again notching the tempo down and letting the track’s wistful oriental melodies ride out into the dark.

london staple deadboy returns for the first time since 2011s here, releasing new four track ep blaquewerk on 25th march. the release is the first of a set of many to shortly be announced, joining festival pleasure principle to form part of our 10th anniversary in 2013.

the proposition is a simple one. it was a 2009 when julio bashmore first remixed >heartbreaker< from deadboys classic first release - the >u cheated< ep on well rounded.
he remoulded the garage template of the original into something more immediate, replacing the swung off-beats of the original with driving forward-rhythms and a clarity of purpose that takes absolutely nothing away from the musical impact of the original. this circulated on mp3 and we smiled and danced.
unexpectedly, in 2010 jb returned to >heartbreaker< for a different interpretation. this time around a more haunting approach was the order of the day with cross-fading strings creating a soulful, otherworldly atmosphere. the drop this time also swapped sub bass for punchy 808s. a tantalising further alternative that pointed the way to this vinyl release.

first release on the all new numbers label is a collaboration between dress 2 sweat, stuffrecords and wireblock. if u want me is threatening to be the first underground hit of 2010, already finding its way into the boxes of kode9, martyn, sinden, joy orbison and modeselektor, who included it as the opening track in their recent resident advisor podcast. the limited edition vinyl release will feature music on side a with a laser etched b side.
