the maghreban returns to r&s for a new single following his dark debut album 01deas, perhaps with an icier sound. monster vip is a reworking of a double time rap track from the maghrebans strange u side project he added breaks and rolled it out. end level bosses lurk. beware of the monster. rave navel-gazing back to his roots: his first ever release was a jungle 12inch in 1994. early support from ben ufo. on the flip, batu (timedance/xl) offers up crisp percussion and ominous sound design in his energetic 140 remix of album opener eddies. then the ep is closes out with carpet bombing, the title of which references the producer adding more and more notes to the main percussive motif as it builds and builds.

as the title suggests, rejuvenate marks a rebirth for south london musician paul white. abandoning sampling altogether, white wrote, played and produced all of rejuvenate s music himself, and the result is an album of playful, psychedelic pop.

following his r&s debut, afriqua (aka adam longman parker) presents vice/principle, his second release for the renowned belgian label. recorded in the summer of 2017, vice/principle began as one of afriquas seasonal music packs, a quarterly offering of original tracks shared privately with a small cohort of friends and collaborators. r&s quickly picked up the collection, which expands on the melodicism and textural depth explored on his previous release for the label, aleph.

john talabot and axel boman teamed up in 2017 for their r&s debut the night land where they got to flex their creative muscles over eight tracks of rich synth jams. the two electronic artists have been independently successful in their respective careers, but as pitchfork expressed in their glowing review their collective output doesn’t sound much like eithers work, it doesnt even necessarily reflect the thin, convex sliver where their interests overlap. instead, theyve hit upon something new. this new sound also proved to be a hit with the likes of mojo, phonica, xlr8r, self titled and dj mag all including it their annual best of lists. the artists have now handpicked four artists to create their own vision of the talaboman sound. superpitcher, samo dj and luke slater under his l.b. dub corp alias have all seriously delivered the goods.

r&s newcomer karim sahraoui delivers an ep of deep, emotive techno that draws on the rich legacy of detroit while staying relevant for the modern era. sahraoui is a globetrotting seeker of musical truth spending time in malaysia, italy and spain as well as his native france, he recorded in the early 2000s to some acclaim as djinxx, releasing prolifically for delsin, cocoon, f-com bedrock, and ovum amongst others. in 2009 he took a couple of years out from the industry, travelling to malaysia to find himself. in 2011 a chance meeting reconnected sahraoui with derrick may, who he originally met in the late 90s. may was reactivating transmat and persuaded karim to let him release his music, but on the condition it be under his own name. the resulting pair of eternal life eps in 2014 and 2016 marked his rich return to form glorious melodic, contemplative techno in the classic motor city mode. his plenitude ep for r&s builds on similar positive themes - from the percolating arpeggios and mystic melodies of spy of the desert, to the anthemic jazzy techo paen of born again or the aching symphonic build of before the 2nd coming its clear that after decades in the business sahraouis talent is only growing rather than diminishing. i wanted to give it more spirituality, musicality and roots with the choice of the sounds. going back in the past and transcribe everything with visionary fusions, sahraoui explains.

the maghreban aka ayman rostom is one of the most unique and respected beat makers working in house and techno today. his dusky grooves, heavy bass pressure and clanking drum breaks sound like they were dredged from the bottom of the river nile, imbued with a maverick personality that shares kinship with the likes of detroits andres and waajed, making him a perfect fit on r&ss storied roster of pioneering outsiders.

2017 saw the first two stunning instalments of lone aka matt cutlers ambivert tools series - breezy atmospheric house, stacked with floor ready trax, inspired by his red hot magic wire imprint. it also saw him present an inspired instalment for the venerable dj kicks series. unknown archetype is a collaborative project between roxy tripp, a british conceptual artist & music producer, and oliver kucera a czech born producer & live performer, residing in the netherlands. with an extensive background of solo projects in the underground scene, the duo began their collaboration together as unknown archetype in 2015. the tripp ep is an abrasive, visceral ep of electronic body music underpinned by themes of jungian psychology, symbolism and mythology. the industrial tech funk of lead track ‘voyeurism’ kicks things off - skittering breakbeats, squalling filters and blistering snares pile-driving the listener into ecstatic submission, while ‘tripp’ see the duo employing sizzling bursts of white noise and caustic percussion over a jagged rhythm box figure. matters are pared right back for the rigid austerity of closer ‘the serpent’ - the dubbed out lead stab quivers over a strobing 909 drum groove and scything cymbals. effortlessly balancing deep late night sounds with a unique character and intricate headphone centric programming, the tripp ep is a fitting and welcome addition to r&s’s storied catalogue.

nonkeen is a project led by nils frahm (erased tapes) alongside sebastian singwald and frederic gmeiner. nils frahm and gmeiner attended the same school in hamburg. a mutual interest in sound recording brought them together and they began producing their own radio show which featured sounds from school, the voices of their teachers and recordings of their own instruments, all recorded on tape machines for kids

ever since first appearing on bristol s black acre imprint back in 2009, kwesi darko s blue daisy project has been hard to pin down. 2011 debut album the sunday gift was a triumph of woozy downtempo fusion, with bustling bass music influences rubbing shoulders with folksy elements, ambient, trip-hop and experimental electronica. following black acre s demise, darko now finds himself on r&s, a label willing to let him follow his unique path. as a result, sophomore album darker than blue is an even more adventurous and enjoyable set than its predecessor, with darko adding modern classical, beat poetry and hazy jazz influences to his already heady musical brew.
