nested structure is the first great circles release from artists outside of philadelphia. thrive are tetsuya yoshida and hitoshi kojima. they both grew up in the north kanto area of japan. they first met at the club run by tetsuya yoshida called sound a base nest, which is known as having the best sound system in the north kanto area. in 2007, the duo started their dj / producing unit thrive. previous releases have included a split 12inch with keia yano for japanese label struct, and recent solo releases by hitoshi for always human tapes and for his own label ambivalent deviation. this record almost didnt happen! — tetsuya and hitoshi were picking up great circles records in japan and, having periodically communicated with each other about music, they sent us the struct 12inch to check out. while cleaning out the back of the car a few months later, the presumably empty record mailer was about to land in the recycle bin when we fortunately discovered a demo cd of unreleased thrive material inside. we drove around listening to it and week later we agreed to release a 12inch. the music on the nested structure 12inch is dark, foreboding, even outwardly threatening. its hypnotic, textural and rhythmically complex.

in a greek mythology, the river styx is the connection to the underworld, but also one of the few river goddesses. according to the myth, the river styx represents the border between the world of the living and the realm of the dead. the souls of the dead hoping at the riverbank to crossing into the underworld so as not to remain there forever.
the second release of the label unterland defines the stygian sound with its mystic and underworldly tone. additionally, the artwork underlines the musically interpretation also in a visual way. the image was created by talented photo artists salar kheradpejouh. his identity thrives on cinematic vision and matches perfectly to interpret the stygian sound artistically.
unterland 02 is a various artists ep by monoloc and jonas landwehr. with his dark production the young artist gained the attention of monoloc already 1.5 years ago, who then started to followed him closely as an artists as well as his creations. for monoloc it was clear that he wants to publish jonas’ music on his new arising label. jonas landwehr delivers three melancholic dub techno production, which are mostly influenced by his stay in the taiwanese capital taipeh.
monoloc continues to determine the stygian sound with three further productions. strong atmospheric plains, which are characterized by various cinematic sound elements.

rhyw is alex tsiridis aka one half of cassegrain. on this, his solo debut for arcing seas, his smoul-dering alien techno sound manifesto continues to thrive over three unique tracks. the morphing, deconstructed acid of unpunishable - a molten statement of lusty intent - strikes first in a heady, hazy pummelling of doom-funk. ‘vertisol pushes crisp and dry snaking percussion through an anechoic chamber, the bass end neatly warming at first then burning hard through your mid section. an icy cold shot of ‘aqua velva is the final offering - a pushing sub-level trip through rhyws private domain - where tingling rushes of bass and static charges wash over us leaving a sinful residue. arcing seas is an anagram of cassegrain. it started out as a secret alias, releasing a couple eps on our circula sound. the secret was less well kept after the duo appeared at berghain under this name. a year later, after deciding to start a label, it finally made sense to bring the two together

for over 4 years, david coccagna aka chaperone has been a constant part of great circles, as musician, art director, and muse. with snapback balaclava he once again fully embodies all of those roles, delivering three inspiring tracks, selecting his remixers with specific attention to their musical histories, and designing his cover art. across the a-side, chaperone scrapes away at the grit – personal grit, the grit of anxiety, and philly grit. these are meditations on loops, and loops on meditations. each one appears on the surface to be a brief quote, but time dilation takes over, and minutes later we discover that chaperone has welcomed us into and back out of his own healing moment. like chaperone s p o n d release grcr-009, the b-side of snapback balaclava is a great circles extended family affair with a trio of diverse remixes that expose and exploit fragments of the chaos chaperone so carefully contained. hitoshi kojima thrive reinterprets pulse feels swells beating with relentless syncopated rhythms and synth lines that hang like massive string drones. m//r lays down a signature percussion ensemble palette, zeroes in on otherwise peripheral elements of grit neglect, and then deftly navigates sea change with both. matt korvette and sean mcguinness of philly punk band pissed jeans open up the pit and finish the story, taking femur baseball bat to its literal and brutal potential with monstrous vocals and kicks.

the mysterious scaarlet is back with a vapourous ep lurking into light and darkness. not good opens the a side with a desperate electronica mood. feel the tension until drums propel you into apocalypse. um pushes you slowly toward the dancefloor. syncopated breakbeats, cut up grooves and a wavy bassline thrive you to embrace the cinematic ambiance. essai nouvo is not just a deep atmospheric broken techno sound. its an awaited glide into nothingness. all tracks mastered by pole at scape mastering in berlin.

pale blue is the new alias for mike simonetti, one of nycs most infamous underground producers, paired with the vocals of elizabeth wight. the duos seductive double sided ep comes home / have you walked through this night is remixed by breakthrough spanish producer pional on man power’s me me me label. have you passed through is raw and daring, its female vocal reminiscent of innovative early electro, this is a intoxicating late night anthem of leftfield electronica. its lyrics are taken from the film the thin red line, a movie about mans destruction of nature, his world and himself. come home is equally alluring with a dreamier narrative, and pionals remix is stripped back and effortless. for these two songs, the inspiration is coming out of the darkness that is inside all of us. it sounds heavy and overbearing, but dance music is the ideal music for escape. it fits perfectly into the pale blue agenda. this music was made for a small, dark crowded dance floors, with low ceilings and high hopes. humanity is bombarded with suffering and pain at every turn its almost like we thrive on it. but we deserve better. these two songs represent part of that struggle- moving towards the light. take your frustrations out on the dance floor. throw it all away for the night. the b-side is about coming out of darkness, coming home. finding euphoria in love and security in one another. feeling lost in the best way. pale blue

strut present an inspired new afro-electronic project for 2016, kondi band, a collaboration between sierra leonean kondi (thumb piano) player sorie kondi and us producer / dj chief boima, who himself has sierra leonean roots. the project was spawned after boima happened upon an online video of one of sories original tracks. sorie kondi is a blind musician with a will to thrive like no person i have met before, explains boima. my work with him began with a youtube link. i spotted the video for his track without money no family and was struck by his beautiful vocals and socially-conscious lyrics. these incredible melodies he was playing on his namesake thumb piano (the kondi) sealed the deal: i immediately decided to remix it.

turning into the home stretch, figure hands the penultimate release of its spc-series to an anonymous yet auspicious talent.on his first output under the ubx127 guise, the producer reveals his wares, combining classic bleep techno with just the right dose of acid. the four driving tracks thrive on their distinct synth-modulations, each scurrying atop a firm groundwork of brooding basses. apparent analogue sequencing pervades the whole ep, infusing it with a feeling of constant motion and liveliness.

eosophobia - a morbid fear of daylight. a title fitting of primary colours latest release by the australian duo, the echo inspectors. conceived on a dark autumn night, eosophobia is a creation of the strange and disturbed. entities materialize, delicate and shy, these beings thrive in the dark. their conviction becomes evident as the night sky turns a darker shade of black, a pulsating and heaving sub sonic landscape emerges for the creatures of the night. life is short lived as dark turns to light, they scampering in to the shadows. resoe, copenhagen s ruler of the deep and dub, takes control of this creation. forming and reconstructing it in to a more powerful, ravenous creature. a fear of light fuels this being to become menacing, unstable and unpredictable. vigour builds swiftly, seething as the cold autumn night goes on. confidence only grows stronger and stronger as the night feeds its hunger only to be destroyed with a sudden shard of light, withering to oblivion.

after the success of the first ep, comes the remix ep signed by three great artists of the techno scene. thrive is remixed by two veterans: mark broom and pacou. mark makes a very attractive and more techno version of the original track. pacou shows a version completely different amazing breakbeat! pulzar is remixed by jeroen search, who is never wrong at the time! powerful second vinyl for this label.
