�pat thomas introduces marijata� is a seminal ghanian album that fuses highlife, reggae, folk, funk and soul, from legendary vocalist pat thomas. originally released in 1976 on gapophone records. �marijata� was a group made up of three members � kofi �electric� addison on drums, bob fischlan on organ and nat osmanu on guitar, hailing from ghana. pat thomas career began in 1969 with the �broadway dance band�, leaving a year later to join the �uhuru dance band�. he then played with ebo taylor�s �blue monks� and finally formed the �sweet beans� in 1973 where he really made his name. the group released �false lover� in 1974, split and then reformed as marijata, releasing �marijata� (also available on mr bongo) and this album, �pat thomas introduces marijata�. thomas career spans more than 50 years and he still tours regularly across the world. replica original artwork, official mr bongo reissue. licensed from gapophone records courtesy of george prah.

the resurgence of icelandic techno continues with the latest release on ae recordings, seeing bjarnar jonsson returning to his long standing ohm project alongside emergent talent kvadrant. the pair were last seen on kvadarant s kontakt label, and their production partnership is clearly still yielding quality, dubbed out techno in the finest scandinavian tradition. even if all the tracks are built with a steely techno focus to them, the synth work and sound design scattered throughout the tracks elevates this to a higher level, not least on the bubbling geisers of signal processing that course through the middle of grip.

mark ambrose doubles up on his appearance on was/is with this strident bout of deep end dwellers, kicking off in style with the charged up strut and punchy mono bass of makossa (mix 1) making a point of stepping into a more peak time sound. makossa (mix 2) takes things in a more bugging direction, but there s still plenty of pressure to be felt in the wriggling low end mess and nagging hi hats. the teakup mix of makossa is a devilish broken beat track, and then wagamama slips in a loopy melodic hook and lets a firm but freaky slice of techno roll out underneath

last spotted on correspondants fourth annual collection, jennifer cardini and noura labbani return to yovavs majestic slice of cold wave theatre running wave and develop its universe on their ever-bubbling dischi autunno imprint. still as epic and dramatic as it ever was, its narrative is now galvanised by a typically dynamic edit from gerd janson (who also remixed yovavs last single on correspondant), three originals and one remix. railroad is an animated chip-like adventure with layers of leads cleverly interlaced around the lolloping lofi kicks file detective plays the consummate creeper as a slinky metallic beat suddenly melts into a sleazy, sneaky lead that keeps peeping over its shoulder space work closes the show on a cosmic high with such a strong emotional pull it could make sabres of paradise blush while brassica add crucial footnotes with uptempo breakbeat remix so elastic and euphoric it could flex a bicep or two. stunning, immersive and truly singular no one is doing it like yovav right now.

adam beyer s drumcode closed out another hugely successful year in 2017, with a non-stop release schedule showcasing some of the best techno on offer from both the labels roster of artists to some fresh new names popping up on the scene. now in its 21st year, the label announced its drumcode festival later this summer, that will only contribute to solidify their position as the world s no.1 techno label. making his debut on drumcode in 2017 with his track fake featured on the a-sides vol 6 compilation, one of brazil s much loved exports wehbba brings us his first full ep this february with eclipse . a no nonsense 4 track offering, and all thoroughly road tested by adam, they have gained much support from longtime drumcode fans. eclipse, delivers a low end rumble along with a modulating synth line. reigning high throughout the track, is the undeniably catchy and unique synth. leaving this track one to be recognised on dancefloors all over the world. �protocol doesn t turn down the pace, straight into a chugging hypnotic drive, this track leaks with attitude, along it s eerie undertones. probably the most acid influenced track of the ep, glasswerk has a futuristic modular synth riff which thunders along a hypnotic bass line which flows nicely into framework to close out the ep. its punchy and powerful kick sits alongside the cleverly crafted synth pattern, taking this track into a dark zone with a groovy element still resonant.

while quite a few people are obviously still dwelling in the achievements of munich�s disco era during the 1980s, it seems that another major part of the cities partying scene travels to the same clubs every weekend. here they are getting fed with the plasticized tech house trax that everybody wants, drinking vodka red bull until they almost pass out and walk - if they are still able to - home happily, oversaturated by non-inventive, but good selling music. so far the cliché. fortunately, reality looks a bit different, at least for the lovers of uk bass. in order to make people aware of the city�s flourishing developments in this scene, the grandmasters of ruffhouse and jahmoni records have teamed up for a limited 10�.

after the sublime triple 12inch re-issue of the sonar bases 4-10 album on deeptrax records, it s now time for the second installment in the sonar base transmissions series: the album dark matter . all 6 tracks were produced by frank de groodt around 2004/2005 and were only released in the inner circle, never released on vinyl. this mini lp still sounds as fresh as it was produced 13 years ago, experimental on the drums and synths. when listening to sonic discharge and velvet sky of sonar 6 , the link with drexciya is easily made. sonar base takes you further into outer space territory with the dark sounds of polygone suffering and the title track dark matter there is the clear idm feel of tracks like meet you at tower 3 on sonar 7 . dark matter is a hypothetical type of matter distinct from baryonic matter (ordinary matter such as protons and neutrons), neutrinos and dark energy. dark matter has never been directly observed, however, its existence would explain a number of otherwise puzzling astronomical observations the mini lp is limited to 400 black versions and 100 on limited edition purple marbled vinyl, pressed by deepgrooves and fully remastered by thee j johanz. you know the drill!!

raw rhythm & blues out of seattle! camelot records, operated by jan kurtis skugstad from 1964 to 1966, released an astounding number of singles and even full length albums during its short time of existence. camelot is best known in collector circles for two monster releases by organist ron buford (accompanied on vocals by ural thomas on deep soul), however within their output are still some recordings which not many people have heard of yet. this is exactly the case with the two songs by johnny lewis which you find on this sweet 45rpm single. unchain my heart and i got a woman are two really nice cover versions which sound even better on this properly mastered 45 with its crispy and raw sound.

alicia myers is in peak form on a new release from most excellent unlimited and ace beat, right here right now (hallelujah anyway). originally issued by ace beat in 2015, this collaboration between the new jersey house label whose early 90s releases are still considered gospel house masterpieces and meu marks the first time the track will see vinyl release. making its debut are danny krivit s edit of the original derrick ricky nelson mix and an exciting remix from ricky, the song s composer, and danny, who championed the song from its first appearance and has featured it ever since in his sets. the connection between alicia myers and danny krivit goes back much farther than most people know. in fact, her breakout 1981 single i want to thank you,among the most beloved dance music classics of all time, was initially broken by danny when he played the promo at the paradise garage, catching larry levan s ear. when influential radio dj frankie crocker subsequently heard it featured in levan s sets, he immediately programmed it on wbls, new york s premier black fm station, and the song s legacy was assured. much like i want to thank you, right here right now perfectly blends an inspiring, gospel lyric with an impassioned, soulful vocal performance and club-ready instrumental backing featuring a muscular piano hook. the uplifting sentiment has already proven its power to elevate and unite dance floors in the communal expressions of joy that are central to the most soulful dance experiences and the time is right to spread the feeling! this exclusive release will be showcased on twelve-inch vinyl with a precise replication of the classic 90s ace beat label.

famous for their matching, colourful suits and always-happy smiles, beyaz kelebekler (white butterflies) were a mixed-gender turkish band very popular during the 70s. they released one album plus numerous 45s in turkey and other countries like holland and italy. in 1976 during the last day of their european tour, just after one gig in cologne, beyaz kelebekler visited a studio of a friend which was still in construction. they decided to record a few songs, just for fun and for testing the new studio equipment. it was a very basic, one take recording, using an 8-channel mixer, a few mics and a reel-to reel tape machine. the result was an amazing example of anatolian psych-funk, featuring wah-fuzz guitar, flute, heavy drums, joyous male / female vocals. unreleased until now, here is the first ever release of these surprising recordings, rescued from the only surviving cassette tape.

we used a wide selection of traditional african drums that all have their own name, each one has a style and a sound. the rhythms used in this record would stem back to south american rhythms but using african drums. this was a sound and rhythm that influenced early post punk records in new york and still has an influence on dance music today.�

at the tail-end of 2017, xl recordings reissued jonny ls seminal d&b album sawtooth on vinyl for the first time. a move that further cemented the records game-changer status, dj mag hailed the record as being still the future, while resident advisor said 20 years later, sawtooth still sounds like an outlier. so after showcasing this 20-year-old classic, xl recordings are today releasing a 12inch containing remixes of the most iconic track from the lp, piper. with efforts from peverelist, overmono, powell and zomby, these remixes go some way towards showing the influence jonny ls music still has on a wide range of contemporary electronic artists.

strange valleys, the 2018 full-length from starving daughters, is a progression as well as a shift in sound from the la band s already-stellar previous releases. make no doubt about it that the sound of progressive rock and psychedelia still play a big role here but there s certainly a greater influence from library music on the new lp. the starving daughters vinyl impressions blog, led by chris tillotson of the band, shared the music of chris s collection of which many were library lp s. these records seemed to have seeped into the mind, body, and souls of the whole band on this strange valleys lp. everything from the instrumentation, the attention to melody, to the track-length shows the large appreciation they have for library music. that being said, this moog-heavy, psychedelic-prog-funk, california-themed record is certainly unique and adventurous. winding through the exotic roads of strange valleys is certainly a trip well worth taking over and over again.

for the second release on their black series, ravage invited electronic music veterans al matthews and patrick walker to team up under their forward strategy group moniker. the last release of these legends was quite a few years ago, but the wait was worth it. their east port rangers ep kicks-off with nine and one, a hypnotic, heavy-loaded stomper containing some uplifting, loopy vocals. following is the most minimalistic track of the ep, lisp your way, yet it still has a lot of substantial punch and lash to it. the b-side starts off with heavy broken beats, combined with a classic rave sound, taking the listener back to the blistering sound of the nineties. finally, the ep oozes down with the track in abeyance, a haunting, down-tempo track with a melody to send shivers down your spine, which could be deemed a real creeper.

blacksilk s fourth release features the emerging italian producer unconscious. four relentlessly sophisticated electro tracks infused with a taste of ebm constitute the framework of this record. unconscious stands out as a refreshing surprise, enriching the complex structure of his work with a powerful dark veneer. a remarkable remix by violet poison is an added value, both the artists hailing from a country where the vatican s influence still pervades every level of social and public life, molding a pervasive hypocritical morality.

this new album comprises 6 tracks of edm: emotional dance music. they were made and recorded during the hot summers of 2016 and 2017. everything you need then is freshness and coolness and this is exactly what they are giving. they combine the overall positivity of the summer and the melancholy caused by the insistence of the heat, of the light, of the endless nights. they were played directly from the machine to a 1/4�� tape, which explains their very natural and direct development. 303-like bass, gnarly hi-hats, heavy kicks and digital licks are still to be expected here.

violet and bleid met last year in lisbon, at the radio quântica studios. in the very same day, they impromptu started working together on a track: a cover of underground sound of lisbon�s so get up to celebrate international womens day. together, alongside a crew of young lisbon djs and activists, they also run the queer techno party mina, one of the most vital things going on in the city�s nightlife - the picture in the artwork was taken in the backstage of one of those infamous, dark-room-equipped parties.
bleid remixed naive001�s togetherness by violet, and that dope rework made it to rroxymore�s bag (as heard at berghain) and was played on bbc radio 6, rinse fm and +++. the pair became friends, started bouncing ideas about production techniques, rap skills and the importance (or lack thereof) of the classics in dance music. making more music together happened naturally.
naive002 feels like a continuation of naive�s first release in some ways: the jungle-inspired chopped breaks, sonic synth work and oneiric pads are still there but gain a heavier, perhaps more somber tone at times, exploding into depth or ecstasy at others.
