poolside began as a recording project in a converted los angeles backyard pool house in early 2011, producing sunny tracks of subaquatic indie dance music in this makeshift recording studio. surfacing first in the form of a youtube video for the catchy track do you believe? poolside were soon gaining local and national attention, with djs like james murphy of lcd soundsystem, techno legend derrick may, and disco don todd terje spinning these tracks at events and a growing online following. throughout 2011 poolside continued making waves with a sound called daytime disco through tracks like their cover of neil youngs harvest moon and original tunes. in 2012 poolside worked on a remix for longtime disco punks the rapture and held fans over with a new single and video for a song called slow down as they prepared to release their debut album. that album, pacific standard time, was self-released in july of 2012. after the albums release, remixes for artists like matthew dear, little dragon and fools gold soon followed, as well as rehearsing and touring with a live band and doing dj sets around the world. as thoughts turned to a second album, poolside went on ice for a year to regroup, beginning to work in earnest on another album in the fall of 2016. while still revolving around the sunny, laid-back disco sound of pst, these sessions yielded the additions of up-tempo dance songs and more guitars, and generally more fleshed-out arrangements. poolside surprise released their second album heat in 2017. poolside have over 1.5 million monthly listeners on spotify and have fans all over the world. they are currently on tour as a live band.

“unsocial medias” is the new release by luc ringeisen, released via trim records. since founding the vinyl club record shop in ibiza in 2003, luc has made a name for himself in the underground scene throughout europe. now, with a series of strong releases behind him, but none since 2016, he has decided to release “unsocial medias”, the label’s second release after tijn’s brilliant “don’t stand still”.

after years of preparation, listening to and playing records that would ultimately influence his own productions, modex delivers his first solo ep. a four tracker full of inspiration ranging from old school breaks to trance and ultimately house and techno. created for the dance floor yet still full of melodies and emotion, the ep intends to reach various communities.

that summer i developed somewhat of an obsession with tonto’s expanding head band after having seen them perform at the big chill festival that year. the music blew my mind. later upon my return to civilisation and the ensuing research which then began in earnest i became as much blown away by the enormous t.o.n.t.o. (the original new timbral orchestra) modular synthesizer that had created the music as i was by the music itself. built in the early 70s, it s still the largest synthesizer around today. with the live show still resonating in my head i tracked down everything tonto had ever recorded. one of these tracks was an obscure outtake from the time t.o.n.t.o.’s creators, malcolm cecil and robert margouleff, were producing and engineering for stevie wonder in the ‘70s(https://youtu.be/wuaszff7yq0). the track, bittersweet, only ever appeared on a highly limited self-released cd put together to coincide with their appearance at the big chill. consequently i featured it on a few mixes i did over the years and invariably i’d be asked “what’s that track?” by those with an ear for something unique. and invariably these same people, many of them djs, would turn away disgruntled when i informed them it was cd only. although i didn t know it at the time, the seed was definitely sown for this vinyl compilation that you now hold in your hands.

what do you get when you cross a frenchman, a dane, two irishmen and a swede? the debut various artists compilation from kyoku records, of course. gathering the producers who make up their whole discography thus far, the melbourne-based imprint are welcoming back dorsi plantar, sune, long island sound and ethyene (alongside folamour and marc bianco). translating from japanese to a befitting -dancing birds-, the odoru tori ep is revitalizing the elegant origami series for one last spin. the orizuru, hachidori, oumu and hakucho, that is, the paper crane, the hummingbird, the parrot and the swan are bringing the handmade array to a suitable conclusion. on the a side, the scandinavian connection is responsible for bringing some summer heat. dorsi plantar sheds his usual wistfulness for a slightly moodier, more functional track with -senorita lolita-, although still incorporating some of that playful sampling he s now come to be known for. -californicate- from sune takes a more laidback approach and channels the breezy and carefree atmosphere of the coastal golden state. on the flip side, long island sound follow the same recipe that made -delusions- such a big hit with the intricate sampling and eloquent arrangement of -ease in-. to top things off, ethyene, with the help of folamour and marc bianco, close out the record with a groovy, vocal number that sees them employ their signature french touch formula to great effect on the simply titled -good-.

the two stars, both superb singers who moved on to become award-winning actors, first worked together on a telethon in 1952, while dino was still half of the martin and lewis comedy duo. their friendship developed in the late 50s despite their widely differing personalities - dino developing an ever-increasingly laid-back approach, while sinatra proved to be sharp and frequently tempestuous. the two also bonded over their italian heritage. enjoy this lp including “ghost riders in the sky”, “south of the border” and many more!

picking up from where she left off with last years successful tools of my purpose, e- saggila has returned to bank employing a more sublime and immersive electronic document. previously leaning toward noisier and distorted rhythms, she has incorporated more sophisticated elements into writing and production. dedicated to sublimity is a product of growth and progression but still reflects the raw elements weve heard in her early recordings. lush and atmospheric elements coincide with the brutality of her live sets and play off one another as a cohesive representation of the e-saggila project.

while ant plate has been insanely busy with a plethora of aliases on a multitude of labels recently, he s still found time to turn out some surefire heaters in the studio with long time sparring partner matt hunt. this release marks the first appearance of rhythm plate on vinyl only, but it s worth the wait. there s an epic scope to apathetic empathy, which features bashy 80s drum hits and squelchy bass front and centre, but soaring vocal licks and piano stabs that widen the track out beautifully. observed privacy is a more emotive cut laden with illustrious keys, abuser experience is a bright and bashy deep house belter and prototype night takes things down a slinky, acid-speckled route. rhythm plate still serving up the house music realness after nearly 20 years.

ambien baby is an emergent project from the increasingly prolific d. tiffany and dan rincon, both luminaries of the vancouver scene. after a first official appearance on normals welcome last year, the pair are back with some deft and delightful adventures through rugged breaks, playful synth touches and a healthy dose of 90s attitude. somehow these ingredients are deployed with that distinctive laid back west coast vibe that makes for such compelling listening as well as potent dancefloor weapons - take nada (live at sweep up) as a case in point. rolling breaks and nasty acid lines there may be, but the mood still has a heads down quality to it that just gets under your skin.

harlem s legendary disco label queen constance has long been a cult favourite among fans of underground dance music for decades. one of many labels operating under the equally legendary p&p family of imprints queen constance was operated by one peter brown, a truly colossal figure in nyc s music scene, it s catalogue still fascinates music lovers to this day. covering a wide range of styles including gospel, early rap and disco the label s output continually finds it way into the playlists of respected dj s and selectors across the globe. high fidelity will be the first in a series of queen constance rarities to be reissued, an extremely rare and coveted record that can change hands on the second hand market for big big money, avoid those low rent bootlegs that are out there and cop this fully licensed repress. the group s self-titled sole long-player is a fantastic 6 track set of gritty, soulful and uplifting funky disco with a diy edge. not too much is known about the artists themselves, or even when the record was performed, recorded or released but it certainly sounds like a group who knew their craft inside out. the energy is high across the record and the group sound like they re on fire, just check the outrageously funkified magic carpet and you ll see what we mean. amazing. the whole project has that enchanting lo-fi, back-street feel to it in terms of production and the mind boggles as to how such a record would have come off had it been recorded at a motown or any other big studio, but no matter as this release is perfect the way it is, an essential piece of street-level nyc disco straight from the underground.

like scsi-9 as such always was a neverthing but still existed, so pheotron minds a future synth which lives just in our head. it is from there that we take, line by line, those melodies which join to a track. midnight red is a result you get when opening a bottle of red sharply at midnight. you must be in front of your gear then. at least, it worked for us that way.

dan stielow mortazavi has an outer edged family background and a long testament in music starting in his teens with his first recorded project the product that was self released to cassette back in 1983. three decades later it saw a vinyl release on the dark entries label. the debut spite cathedral lp is made with his long-time musical partner karsten svendsen (to feed on others, hinsidan, ate23) and is released with a free bonus 7” on bodies on july 2nd. ultra minimalism streaming from the darkest of places still with a presence of a cold, cold love. with sparse elements they create dramatic scenery. industrial beats backed with something that sounds like hostage jazz and rock drummers fused with the loneliest of themes, epic at times and oh so broken at others. touching topics of man’s inhumanity, paranoid misinterpretations, the fragility of the mind, sex and broken homes without mouthing a single word.

following on from angophora s beautiful long player, ken oath is back with another full length lp from low flung. friends of the label will note that this is his third release for ken oath, and it s a fittingly mature and expansive statement for a debut lp. perhaps mature is the wrong word here, as all his brilliant ideas are backed up by a sense of whimsy that betrays his playful side. the music strikes a balance between styles and spaces that could perfectly soundtrack moments at home, in the club, and in the liminal spaces between. danny s efforts at writing dance music still contain the idiosyncratic approaches of his ambient works: the deadly deep subs and endless echo spirals on -rising damp- sounds like someone trying to piece together a drum & bass track after an off-hand conversation about the genre. he s transmuted the propulsive energy of jungle into something no less dynamic, full of stops and starts and sonic pressure but flush with space. -tarp climber- is at heart a rollicking digi-dub. the more ambient moments of the lp are equally captivating - the glassy tones of -frozen coat- sound like a space-age ensemble soundtracking a floating lounge on a suite of glass instruments, while -ocean grove- blends field recordings and dreamy synthesizer melodies to create an uncanny sense of place that unroots you from wherever you re listening. there s a heavy emphasis on danny s collaborators as well - the cold emotion duo is reprised on the spacey ‘hills hoist’. closer -bacchus marsh- is a collaboration with prophets, a cross-state ensemble that defy any easy categorisation. the music here flirts with jazz and minimalism but with a dubwise production aesthetic to produce something that recalls khan jamal s visionary -drum dance to the motherland- in spirit and practice, but this whole album sounds as otherworldly and one-of-a-kind as the aforementioned lp.

luv dancin’ is an absolutely essential record. the underground solution was one of the monikers for roger sanchez, one of the most prolific house music producers in the 90s. this 1990 anthem luv dancin is a nyc deep house benchmark. based on arthur russell’s disco classic is it all over my face and with elements of the bottle interspersed with a deep, rolling garage bassline, dreamy keys and pads, the “s” man crafted a timeless piece of dance music that still inspires today and is often imitated yet obviously never bettered! a side is the remix version featuring jasmine on vocals, while the b side is the sought after “in deep mix” from the original 12”. as with all our ny house classics, first time available on 7”.

the ever-prolific seven davis jr has been thoroughly generous in sharing out his smoky, sensual strain of deep house in recent years, with the dust still settling from his last album. now he s back with a full tilt five track ep that hints at a new direction to come, embracing the momentum and minimalism of techno without losing the distinctive bump that his music just can t do without. -no mercy- is a dark, kinetic affair while -lipstick- gets tougher, funkier and rawer. -super model- is a sleazy jam that revolves around a strutting beat and a nasty bassline, with some of davis jr s cool and deadly vocals rolling over the top. -on the catwalk- has a rugged dance mania feel to the groove, and then -to be continued- spells out that this new, ruffneck direction for seven davis jr has got a future

in the studio prototype 909 was a group that rarely agreed on a clear idea of exactly what they were trying to accomplish. the entire project was an experiment, and every time they hit record there was nothing better for them to do than to just try stuff. whenever it came time to put together an album they would go through what they had recently done and nd the tracks that seemed to fit together well, or that at least sounded like they were made by the same group. that left on the cutting room foor some really amazing worst that somehow just didnt fit their goals at the time. at schmer, we remember. p-909 leftovers have schmer written all over them. these four tracks were all recorded live in the studio in between their three studio albums 93-97. brenecki ( half of ontal ) provided his remix inspired by one of them. hyperdrive and -datafash- were recorded shortly after acid technology was released in 93. they come from the -lets make acid technology vol 2 approach-. that would have made a really cool record had they done it but they decided on making transistor rhythm instead. anoisenyc aka the tracs that dietrich hates is what you get when you let jason go nuts on a doepfer maq-16 ( they never made that mistake again ). bobo is possibly the most prototypical p-909 tracks ever: it took three guys making their own tracks simultaneously almost ignoring what the others were doing but somehow mixing them into a flow to make this one, but it all comes together nicely in the end. its amazing that they never released it before. you ve enjoyed the wait, now enjoy your new prototype 909 while it still is new!

opening track in the b kicks off proceedings in no uncertain fashion. it s 100% wall shaker material, the type of techno music best paired with strobe lights and towering speaker stacks. it mesmerises with its low-slung undulating bassline and detroit rhythms before giving way to some riotous old school essex stabs and sharp claps. no messing, this is a certified 3 am red light burner! track 2 chocolate biscuit accelerates proceedings! beginning with unfussy drums and a robotic, bleep-heavy melody driving it off into a wonderfully off-kilter direction. its arpreggio d rhythms may be brutish and wrestle a growling sense of menace out of the track, but the overall feel, however, suggests considerable care and attention has been paid to make it sound this way. there s clearly an uncommon musicality at play here to make something this complex feel so simple. the bpm drops next on jenny s hall but from the offset, there s enough funk and thrust in the motorised synth line to get bodies gently grooving without the beauty getting lost in the slower loop. this is blissed out, psychotropic techno - the kind of track where it feels like you re floating and falling at the same time, but all the while making sure you still remain fit for purpose on the dancefloor. ian blevins takes on remix duties this time and the berlin-based dj/producer offers up a sleek peak-time banger that fizzes, bubbles and percolates. he gives the rhythm on jenny s hall less space to swing and ties it to a tight motorik beat turning it into a slice of shiny, modern techno but with extra shoulder-checking force. its vibe drawing from a sense of outsider-party fun with a wry smile, and a knowing wink running throughout before bringing the package to a suitably left of field crescendo.

for his most inclusive outing to date, doubt mines the outer limits of minimal house music whilst still maintaining the vibe of alienation and melancholy that characterises his work. the mood of “april” is euphoric and carefree but dig deeper and the fragile beauty also suggests an impending and ominous apocalypse. “what is happening” and “samusex” counterbalance the a-side’s brief suggestion of joy with a mood closer to doubt’s previous work. the title track meanwhile recalls the work of labels like ifach and trelik with a swinging, stripped down dub sound.
