primitive trust is the coming together of two experienced musical minds. in one corner is will saul of the influential aus music empire. and in the other is tom mangan. aka tee mango. the producer who started millionhands record and clothing label. the pair met many moons ago and reconnected recently at a festival in morocco. they bonded over music. lunch and shared family travails - and as they both now live in somerset decided a little local studio collaboration seemed all but essential. between them. these consumate country gentlemen have seen plenty a musical styles come and go. so decided their best route forward would be to make music to please themselves. to that end. they holed themselves up in tee mangos woodshed studio with the following ground rules: they would make music only with the gear they had (mpc 2000. ableton. roland 101. juno. fender rhodes. various fx pedals) they would trust their instincts and go with first feelings they would embrace the joy of randomness if in doubt they would ask what would carl do? with that. you have the simple but effective mo of primitive trust. these sessions have resulted in a series of three eps to be released over the course of four months. each ep will feature 2 or 3 original tracks and one fresh remix. with unique artwork and an illustration by all-around visual auteur geoff mcfetridge. using the building blocks of house. and classic techno primitive trust can do zoned out and romantic. as much as driving and heady. but with an ease that comes from experience. years in the making. while tipping their proverbial hats to the past they also look to the future with their sound. mixing samples. wigged out synthwork and propulsive rhythms to create something honest and heartfelt that will stand the test of time

hot on the heels of aus recent releases from breach. huxley and bwana they ready their next offering from irish duo and long term label affiliates bicep. aptly timed for the festival months. their just ep follows up a series of self-released titles which include collaborations with ebony and midland and is an impassioned bundle of broken beats. shimmering synth lines and rapturous piano chords. the title track kicks things off and suffuses a broken kick and snare combo with a poignant sequence and heart-rending synth strings. a vocal refrain drops in and out throughout a lucent breakdown before () lays a soft. filtered croon over a swelling piano motif. tension is astutely balanced. never quite boiling over and keeping the listener pinned before () drives a tough. gravelly kick under gentle flecks of acid and rich sweeping pads.

breaking onto the scene via a series of anonymous 12inch. it was after garnering reverence as a big name producer in disguise that cottam was unveiled to be the humble newcomer paul cottam. rising through the early rave scene in his hometown of preston. he first cut his teeth as a dj warming up for the likes of surgeon. dave clarke and regis. despite his techno upbringing. it was the slo-mo tempos of mark e and the revenge that inspired cottam to produce his own brand of dusty soul and hip hop-grounded house. however. in april cottam returned to his roots with >sunrise sunset< on use of weapons. sinking a rave core down to his signature slung bpm. it is a journey into sub-aquatic acid house that began with a series of remixes for luv jam. pattern select and morning factory. and one that he continues to explore on his aus music debut. aptly titled >deep deep down< sculpts the feeling of acid techno into warm slo-mo house. ukrainian producer vakula takes the track off on another tangent entirely. stripping away its propulsive chugging heartbeat and replacing it with an off-kilter. spaced-out pulse reminiscent of theo parrish when he s in that kind groove. on the flip. >twang< is a return to cottam s brand of languid. soulful house. steeped with groove destined to incite the dancefloor shuffle.
last year put leeds-based producer midlands (aka harry agius) name on the map with his successful collaboration with hessle audios ramadanman. >your words matter< on aus music. this year. aus label chief will saul has invited midland back to take a solo swing. its an excursion that explores the boundaries of 2-step. uk garage and techno and consists of two original tracks. on the a side >through motion< shows midlands ability to seamlessly take the spirit of uk garage and fuse it with techno. the tracks moody piano melody is punctured by a dark. pitch-shifted vocal and encircled by the warm atmospherics that have become his trademark. on the flip side is >shelter<. a brooding and cavernous affair whose vocals and whispery atmospherics make this the perfect late night tool.

inspired by the stripped back technical set-ups of yesteryear. mike monday and will saul present the sequence 1 ep. the product of the two artists limiting themselves to a roland 909. a korg kaos pad. a dave smith polyevolver and recording their jamming on the fly. >we wanted to inject some excitement. energy and randomness into this release. so decided to play the tracks live with mike on the 909 and keys and will on filters and effects. we had a broad idea of where we were going before we pressed record. and recorded a few takes of each track. then took the best moments from each. the big challenge was reining in the slightly chaotic recordings. but after some tweaking we found a balance between old school rawness and modern production values.<
