back in 1962 when this, their third album was released, the group consisted of smokey, ronnie white, pete moore and brother and sister bobby and claudette rogers. while he had yet to be featured in the billing by name that came in 1965 robinson’s photo was top and centre of the lp cover. the ten songs featured barely amounted to 27 minutes of music, but what i ll try something new may have lacked in quantity it more than made up for in quality. and the reason was clear. six of the ten songs stem from robinson s pen five solo efforts and the sixth, closing track this i swear, i promise , a co-write with janie bradford. let s savour an album that, as one perceptive critic put it, features the miracles at their early best... as young, eager kids just starting out, filled with optimism, youthful exuberance and enthusiasm, long before record-company politics, favouritism and restrictions changed the group forever.

alex north’s work for ballet, symphony orchestra, television and film continues to stand the test of time almost 25 years after his death. although nominated 15 times for an academy award, it wasn’t until 1986 that he was finally given due recognition when a lifetime achievement oscar was bestowed upon him. but, as this soundtrack lp so amply demonstrates, his pioneering work on streetcar remains one of alex north’s crowning achievements.

of all the musicians that emerged from the jazz avant-garde of the late fifties and the sixties, ornette coleman has been the one whose music has best stood the test of time and entered into the mainstream. as a performer he has long outlived many of the musicians who committed themselves to the new music all those decades ago and, in the process, built up an affection, not to say respect, from many who doubted he could last the distance given his uncompromising and individual approach to jazz performance. initially, of course, he had to find musicians with an empathy for his personal take regarding improvisation. on the album presented here, 1959’s the shape of jazz to come, he was accompanied by three individuals who dovetailed perfectly on what became a groundbreaking album.

“kind of blue” is probably the best-selling jazz record of all time. we precede the familiar stereo version with the legendary “kind of blue” mono mix - legendary because columbia records claimed that the tapes had been discarded long ago. the avaxhome audiophile website approved of the new perspective mono offers on a time-honoured classic, saying: “if you’re only used to hearing it in stereo, this will be a different experience. it sounds kind of “forward”, particularly the saxes. overall it has a nice timbre, especially in the midrange.”

BRILLIANT CORNERS / THELONIOUS HIMSELF (2X12 LP, 180G)
2x12" Vinyl lp UK25.10.11
pianist and composer thelonious sphere monk is quite rightly heralded as one of the major figures involved in the birth of bebop and consequently revered, alongside such luminaries as charlie parker and dizzy gillespie, as a father of what became known as modern jazz. but, in so many respects, his stylistic approach to the music differed from his illustrious contemporaries. for whilst parker, gillespie and his fellow pianist bud powell often displayed their considerable technique at ridiculously fast tempos, monk s approach was entirely different with a keyboard technique that used a considerable amount of space and relied greatly on its percussive qualities for impact. he fitted into the world of these who wished to take the world of jazz to the next stage after the swing era, but became part of the be-bop scene by default, not design. two iconic albums *brilliant corners* and *thelonious himself* are included on this special 180 gram vinyl 2lp gatefold edition.
