here comes the sun (1971) is an album by jazz singer-pianist nina simone, consisting of cover versions of songs by pop and rock musicians. it features songs recorded in the rca studios with a full orchestra and backing vocals. although simone covers songs by bob dylan and the beatles, among others, most of the versions feature arrangements substantially different from the original recordings. this is most clearly in the final song *my way*, which with its fast pacing rhythm deviates significantly from the usual interpretations. pressing on audiophile 180 gram vinyl.

for an artist who recorded on numerous labels throughout her career, nina simone did experience one of her most creative periods while at rca between 1967 and 1974. this compilation reflects those years quite well. included here are the definitive live version -to be young, gifted and black-, her more mature readings of -i loves you porgy- and -my man s gone now-, striking takes on popular songs such as jerry jeff walker s -mr. bojangles-, barry gibb s -to love somebody-, bluesy interpretations of bob dylan s -i shall be released,- and -just like tom thumb s blues,- and a transcendent read of the byrds -turn, turn, turn-. also included here are live versions of -backlash blues-, -gin house blues,- and -i want a little sugar in my bowl- from the stellar black gold album. as single-label comps go, for the price and the sound, this one is tough to beat.

black gold also contains a rendition of sandy denny s who knows where the time goes, in a minimalist arrangement that ends in an uplifting orchestration true to both the writer of the song and the performer. throughout the entire performance ms simone keeps a regal, aloof and sometimes goofy composure, her monologues in between songs ushering the listener a little closer to her moving performance.

this album is a first for nina simone. it features nina accompanying herself at the keyboeard. there is no instance of overdubbing the organ and some others dubbing her voice and of clapping and tambourines, but in this album everything is done solely by nina simone with no outside help.
