this is a 1963 studio album featuring john coltrane and johnny hartman.
coltrane and hartman had known each other since their days playing with dizzy gillespies band in the late 1940s, and hartman is the only vocalist with whom the saxophonist would record as a leader. with mccoy tyner on piano and elvin jones on drums, the songs of this album were recorded during a single session in rudy van gelders englewood studios on march 7, 1963. this recording also features >lush life<, a last minute addition to the session after they heard nat king coles rendition on the car radio on their way to the studio. this version would become the definitive one, and it still sounds as poignant and piquant as it did forty years ago.
re-issue on 180 grams audiophile vinyl in gatefold sleeve.
after the genre-smashing, seven vinyl pressings deep (and counting) success of viktor casanova, there is no way that the italoboyz could possibly top their first appearance on mothership, right? wrong! we are happy to report that they have created an organic techno masterpiece in >bahia<, enlisting the help of one of the greatest jazz musicians of our time - john coltrane. youve never heard the master like this - the italoboyz have molded the original >bahia< into a stomping peak timer as only they can. their trademark monster kick underpins stuttering jazz kits, a playful piano line, and an insistent, soulful tenor sax sample from the man himself (cleared after four months of intense negotiations). bahias intro leads into one of the most surprising and euphoric breaks you will ever hear. there are two versions to choose from - the party swing mix gets right to the point, grabbing you by the scruff of your neck. the flip sides mucho lungo mix is perfect for those late night warehouse moments, taking its time to deliver the sweet payoff

esoteric, modal and deep jazz vocals 1960-86 - the power of the human voice, especially when held in song, has long been known to be immensely influential, potent and emotive across all of humankind. when conveying a message, the spoken word - whether in speech, poetry or song - is infinitely more evocative than that of written. and when that message is voiced in the realm of jazz, amidst the open and dramatic freedom that only jazz can provide, the message can be all the more poignant.
nat birchall is one of the uks most special musicians, a spiritual, soulful saxophonist who has drunk deeply from the endless well that is the music of john coltrane. a modest man, birchall is happy out of the limelight but nonetheless has found international acclaim for a series of fine albums on matthew halsalls gondwana label as well as more recently his own sound soul and spirit imprint. this, his sixth album, is his first ever live recording and is released on double vinyl and download only. a decision birchall took on listening to the tapes and thinking the music really suited the warmth of vinyl.
