the afro-funk side of the latin soul maestro! born in gao (mali), boncana maiga is one of the most talented and popular producer of west-african music since the 60s. he studied flute and latin arrangements in cuba during the 60s and founded the famous les maravillas du mali in 1968. he became orchestra leader for the national ivorian tv in abidjan in the mid-seventies, and toured all over the world with the famous africando band. during his recording sessions in nyc at the beginning of the 80’s with a lot of “latin musicians” from puerto rico, venezuela or colombia, boncana maïga also recorded few rare funky tracks with heavy breaks! with the artist, we decided to reissue four rare tracks from 1978 to 1982 dedicated to dancefloor, including a really rare soundtrack for the oil company of ivory coast called petroci. in 2018, hell be back on tour with les maravillas du mali, still have a weekly tv show on tv5 monde and with this reissue will continue to warm your afro-funk parties! fully licensed, 12inch vinyl (45 rpm) including interview. remastered by the carvery!

amsterdam label taped artifact has lined up an ep from merv aka brian oldenborg and jan christiansen. after the re-melted reissue on styrax in 2015, this is the pairs third new ep in three years since coming back after first making music back in the mid nineties. their warm dub and techno style is still very much fresh and arresting. blueprint opens the ep with eight enthralling minutes of percolating drums and shuffling hi hats. frosty yet warm, it’s a cavernous affair with a hypnotic riffs sucking you in over and over. shine is more upright techno, but the rock solid kicks are still draped with rippling, static coated chords that ripple out in all directions. rotundum closes things out with synth waves gently breaking over hunched drums that build the pressure. it’s tense and engaging while remaining thoroughly atmospheric.

the jam starts with -orange sunshine- (doesn t it always?) of course as usual it takes a while to kick in and by the time it does it s obvious helltown acid militia are back with their time warping spaceship. by the second track -still turning- the fog clears a little, but there are still echoes of a time past, what is it? can t quite put my finger on it... on the flip we are met with chunky 909 rhythms in -more important-, because what s more important than a 909 rhythm track? for the final outing -broadcast- (which may be the real hidden gem here) the tempo drops and there s chord stabs, strings and talk of ufos. its at this point that you realise that the label on the record has a picture of mitzi the cat, in a space suit, holding a white 303!! this acid really is a trip.

the “natty dread a weh she want” set brings together two legends of reggae music. the stylish and unmistakable falsetto voice of singer horace andy and the production/dj singing skills of tapper zukie. both artists catalogues of music stand up strong but this, originally released 1979 set of songs seems to have brought something special out of both of them when producing/writing and arranging this set of tunes. “natty dread a weh she want” was a massive hit when it was released by tapper zukie and horace andy but this timeless track still sounds as fresh today as the day it was released in 1979, as do the other tracks on this fine album.

optical s whats the difference finally sees the light of day on wax. one of his most revered tracks, some 20+ years on it still sounds like the future. masterful! and if that wasn t enough, the matrix remix of medicine is thrown in for good measure on the flip.

rat life records presents serial error a project by credit 00, jacob korn & sneaker. this outfit was brought to life in 2013 when red d called for some new beat style tracks for his -our beat is still new- compilation. flying a bit too low under the radar ever since rat life decided to reissue drum abuse on a super sound maxi single. the track was made in jacob korn s headquarter studio / synthesizer museum. the task distribution was hit quickly: jacob squeezing the acid out of his huge formant modular system, credit 00 beating the drums on the boss dr 660 and sneaker throwing his unique vocals on top!

following the release of synkro aka joe mcbride collection of his formative early works earlier this year, apollo recordings is proud to present a brand new ep that draws on the rich heritage of library music. despite having come up during the dubstep era mcbrides music has always resisted easy classification - hand in hand sees him shift his musical focus in a yet more cinematic direction. mcbride explains: the record was inspired and influenced by my love of electronic 80s uk library records like the chappell av series, bruton, soundstage & de wolfe music library. theres a lot of synth work that carries on from my album using my trusted juno-6 / sh101 / jx8p combo with the addition of drum samples via an old akai s2800 i purchased recently. most sounds ive made from scratch on hardware based on sounds used in the library records i mentioned above along with a few cheeky samples.- synkro s signature expansive atmospherics are still very much present, but now they have been burnished by soaring synth pads and pulsing drum tracks that call to mind the haunted melancholy of john carpenter or contemporary such as legowelt or andy stott. rhythmically hand in hand sees mcbride moving somewhat away from his usual off kilter programming inspired by 2-step and garage, embracing the steady pulse of 4:4 which turns out to be an effortless fit.

joran van pol is back on minus with edge, a fantastic four track ep that is his first on the label since 2013. in the years since, the amsterdam based artist has set up his own fade label and has continued to evolve his cinematic techno sound. previously, van pol has also released on labels like rejected, sci+tec and ideal audio, and has the support of all the big techno players who often reach for his tunes in their sets. as a dj he is just as in demand, with headline slots everywhere from space ibiza to time warp all behind him. having recently set up a new studio, he is still coming on strong with fresh inspiration and ever more essential grooves. ‘illos opens things with seven spooky minutes of icy techno. rolling rubbery drums pump away below, and the details up top make for an evocative soundscape with distant industrial sounds, groaning bass and razor sharp hi hats all filling your mind with imagery. next comes title track ‘edge, another brilliant sonic landscape with tense chords repeating over ticking percussion. its a track that builds tension throughout, and keeps you looking over your shoulder into the eerie blackness. the perfectly high pressure ‘return is one that locks you in and never lets up, with warped synths snaking above traintrack like drums and hits. a dark, rumbling bassline and the sounds of pistons releasing air all add to the intensity of this brainmelting bit of futuristic techno. last but not least, ‘frostbite is then the most spacious and spooky offering of the lot. it has freaky alien sound designs scattered around the track with supple kicks driving the whole thing forwards. its an absorbing cut that hurries along and takes you for a thrilling ride. these are four more inventive techno tracks from one of the contemporary scenes brightest stars.

winter, or a time which represents that season, in a metropole that appears to be moscow. the visitor is taking metro no. 6 at leninsky prospect as he is on his way to the ballroom close to gorky park. the air is icy, the sky is grey. a cat, previously hidden among the dirty snow, is crossing his way. the closer he gets to his destination, the clearer he can hear music, music that reminds him of future days. the dimly lit room is only sparsely filled. on stage a graceful singer, capturing the room with her presence. captive voices merge with chords played on yet unknown instruments machine rhythms cycle in 3/4 time. the vigorous peasant dancers, following an instinctive knowledge of the weight of fall, utilize their surplus energy to press all their strength into the proper beat of the measure, thus intensifying their personal enjoyment in dancing. here, in the transhuman ballroom, time stands still and values are being dissolved by numeric progressions. spiritually allied, the visitor, the singer and the peasant dancers short-circuit the present moment while the last falling snow slowly turns into rain. with walzerzyklus, atomtm returns to raster to complete his series that has once begun with liedgut and continued with winterreise. the 7 tracks, created in collaboration with russian singer lisokot, are subdivided into 3 pieces of 2 minutes each and 4 pieces of 3 minutes each, intentionally reflecting the 3/4 time of a classic waltz. throughout the release, lisokot’s delicate vocals are put into different relations to atomtms rather cool machine music, either complementing or contrasting each other. in the same line, the 3 shorter leitmotifs provide the main theme that is taken up repeatedly in the course of the release.

quite possibly the last truly sublime album ever recorded by os mutantes – a set that’s a bit more rock-oriented then their first few, but still pretty revolutionary overall! the group have expanded to a quintet at this point, but haven’t yet falling into the guitar-heavy groove of later years – and rogerio duprat is working with the group on arrangements, although mutantes member arnaldo baptista is handling production chores himself. odd styles still slide into the mix as the tunes roll on – creating that great sense of surprise that makes their best work so great, and keeping things fresh even when a bit more straight ahead! titles include a reprise of -baby-, one of the group’s early classics – plus -portugal de navio-, -virginia-, -tecnicolor-, -el justicero-, -lady, lady-, -sarava-, -it’s very nice pra xuxu-, and -top top-.

a legendary album! this previously unreleased album by os mutantes was supposed to be their breakthrough album to an english speaking market – but for years it’s only been talked about in hushed whispers, and has only been heard by a lucky few! the record was recorded in paris in 1970 – and it’s all in english! (not that we’re biased against portuguese, mind you – but since we’re english speakers, it’s kind of a nice thing to have a record that we can understand!) the record features a number of tunes from the mutantes first two albums – redone here with translated lyrics, and in a compressed pop style that’s a bit smoother than the original albums, but still very nice! in fact, the record’s a sophisticated pop statement that would have stood well in the company of many of the best of 1970s rock elite – had the boneheads at philips actually decided to release the record! no use crying over spilled milk, though – because the album’s out now, and it’s filled with loads of nice tracks like -panis et circensis-, -batmacumba-, -tecnicolor-, -el justiciero-, -i’m sorry baby-, -saravah-, and a sublime reading of -baby-, a track that was virtually the manifesto for tropicalia!

nice price deal !!! single life. the a side is urgent, angry and slamming. djs with kahunas will be playing these. just let doesnt feel right ride. it murders 2nd try is straight up industrial bananas, cant wait to see what happens when this is played out. the b side is full of sadness, longing and regret. single life is the artists favourite cut of the ep and i think you should know that. still waters is probably what it feels like to feel like shit and dive into a deep reservoir in the middle of the night somewhere remote where you could just drown and die without anybody around to help you.

10 years after blu and exile released their magnum opus below the heavens, the california duo have reunited to release 14 tracks from the original 2007 sessions. in the beginning: before the heavens contains previously heard songs and unreleased gems – the best of the best chosen from over 40 songs in the vault. their third collaboration follows 2012s give me my flowers while i can still smell them, and is slated for an october release. in the beginning: before the heavens is made of up songs that are raw and untouched, keeping the authenticity of blu and exile’s creativity at the time. the album has guest appearances from familiar names like dr. oop, donel smokes, aloe blacc, and blame one. while soul provider, another day, and party of two appeared on blus lifted ep, the majority of these songs showcase blu rapping at his peak, maintaining his underground attitude as he dishes on reaching star status (constellations), getting radio play (on the radio), or opposing views in a problem-ridden world (youre gonna die someday). exile, meanwhile, builds a golden hip-hop era feel with head-nodding samples and dj scratches.

featuring dj spank spank & lothario lee (phuture), fast eddie and houz mon, acid house legends from chicago. this title is 4th ep of bigfire, electronic music band in tokyo / japan, including one of posthumous works of earl smith jr. a.k.a dj spank spank died this past september. moreover, this is his last works with lothario lee who has supported earl as phuture for a long time. but his familiar acid house style is well in the disc. and minimal remix suggests that challenging spirit of these phuture’s members still has not been lost. this title has more two chicago house remixes. one side is the creator of hiphouse music, -king- fast eddie. his remix is contemporary and universal house music every one demand. the other side is houz mon known as aclose friend of earl. this underground style with his awesome vintage roland sounds should be called ghetto acid, one of tidemark of house music. last but not least, original track is ingenious future electronic rock opera. we can say this as the originality of bigfire. -general of the universe iv- compares favorably with previous work.

heady heady work from the legendary gal costa – caught here right at her early best, smack dab in the middle of the tropicalia years! the album’s one of gal’s legendary collaborations with arranger rogerio duprat – and it’s very much in the spirit of her other incredible session from 1969, but also features some even heavier and more tripped out guitar – in a way that really pushes the psychedelic aspect of the work! the sound here is really amazing – very fuzzy and freaky at times, in ways that make the album one of the most rocking sets of the entire tropicalia scene, but in ways that still hang onto the quirky experimental qualities of work by os mutantes or caetano veloso. gal’s vocals really rip out amazingly at times – light years away from the sweet sound of the late 70s, and more in the frenetic, urgent style you’d expect from the politically-charged scene that spawned the set. caetano veloso and gilberto gil join gal on a great version of -pais tropical-, jards macale guest stars on the classic -empty boat- – and other tracks include -tuareg-, -meu nome e gal-, -pulsars e quasars-, and -cultura e civilizaco-. essential!
