122 bpm is the story of how a father and his son changed chicagos dance music scene in the 1980s and went on to take the world by storm, leaving an impression that will last forever with just a couple of 12 inch releases the world would soon know as house music. nemiah mitchell jr. and vince lawrence couldnt have known what their contribution to house music would become. their story provides the missing chicago link between soul, disco, new wave and then house, between the radio and club djs and their audience, between the old generation and the new generation. this is the story of the first house records ever made - long before trax or dj international were even dreamt of. the compilation includes numerous unreleased tracks and beyond hard to find house tracks made in chicago in the early to late eighties from the catalogues of mitchbal records and chicago connection records

on >work that shit party<, a fingers inc. style rhythm buttresses a two-note riff, a crackling male voice filtering in from the ether. a pinging keyboard zips around before that two-note flicker expands and contracts, warps and wheedles. but around halfway in, a female vocal refrain of >gonna work it out< breaks fat lacerations into pinholes, blaring keyboards seeping in through the gaps and crevices. then, as with >d117<, it is the congealing of all these disparate elements: a work it out from fischerspooners lizzy yoder sashaying with the two-note riff, the keyboards bouncing off the ceiling, and flaring hi-hats fraying the surface played by pat mahoney (lcd soundsystem). each portion is given its due, only to make the ensuing combination that much more enthralling.

don’t be fooled, for a second. “this is a sad, sad song / for all you sad, sad people,” announces ganglians’ creative core and lead singer ryan grubbs at the outset of the sacramento-based band’s second lp, still living. the guitars, strummed with sun- rays, and the percussion, sprightly with springtime enthusiasm, tell a different tale.

borrowed language returns with their third installment of genre agnostic electronics. following the explosive release of unltd & israel vines >distance no object< ep (featured in millie & andreas superb lwe podcast, and charted by the likes of dj pete & grovskopa) was no easy feat, but jeff pietro proves to be more than up to the task with this brilliant 2-track 10 inch. as with earlier releases on borrowed language, this effort exemplifies the continuing refinement of the labels aesthetic. while some influences are clearly detectable, this is not just cannon fodder, there is enough attention to detail and panache on display here to distinguish pietros take on techno/bass music from his peers. the results are polished, but not without sharp edges, brutal, but elegant, functional, but not faceless.

persnickety sounds is here to funk-ti-fy your world! in this era of nü-disco, space disco, cosmic disco, disco house and shit, there must be a beacon of quality to light the way and lead the faithful back to a place where good grooves matter and realness is holding court. let the labels fall and just get it movin.
