limited edition of 500 numbered copies. the double vinyl is housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve with download code included.
lucky brown is forging new paths by soaking up musical styles from all over the world to infuse with his own trademark sound. those who praise the cross-cultural musical experiments of mulatu astatke of the 1960s and menahan street band of the 2000s will love this album.
raw rhythm & blues out of seattle! camelot records, operated by jan kurtis skugstad from 1964 to 1966, released an astounding number of singles and even full length albums during its short time of existence. camelot is best known in collector circles for two monster releases by organist ron buford (accompanied on vocals by ural thomas on deep soul), however within their output are still some recordings which not many people have heard of yet. this is exactly the case with the two songs by johnny lewis which you find on this sweet 45rpm single. unchain my heart and i got a woman are two really nice cover versions which sound even better on this properly mastered 45 with its crispy and raw sound.
as featured on movements vol.9, we thought it is well worth to re-release -when the well runs dry- on 45 too. even better, what you find here is a previously unreleased alternate take! listen to the first seconds of the b-side -a brighter day- and you know why this 45 should be in any djs box. essentiell re-release for the open minded dj who does not only play tracks which are in demand but just plain funky
as featured on feeling nice vol.4, we thought it is well worth to re-release frederick knight s -steppin down- on 45 too. even better, the b-side -heart complication- is a monster deep-soul track which many of you may have not heard yet. we here at tramp re-release good music, whether it is rare or not. this one is indeed rare so get your hands on it before all copies are gone.
ervin rucker started out as a pianist and composer in the 1950s. after he released his sole single on musette he changed his name to big daddy rucker in the late 60s. at the same time he founded his own gme label on which he released 45s under his own name as well as this one by dede copeland. the price i had to pay is jazzy soul track while the flip you gotta give up some money is an excellent sister funk cut. both cuts can also be found on the tramp records album the soulful side of gme & musette records
the r.d.m. band, with singer milton campbell, were from maple shade, new jersey and recorded two virtue singles in 1969. they released their final 45 on the obscure zoom records label in the early 70s. “give up” and “how can i get in touch with you” can also be found on the tramp records album “virtue recording studios”.
tramps feeling nice series has positioned itself as a universally accepted essential cultural and historical document of some of the greatest unknown local vernacular american black music of the sixties and seventies. the feeling nice series has been dedicated to filling in the blanks between the more well known cuts of so-called deep funk canon and drawing out the relationships and stories behind and between the tunes and the artists, and ultimately creating a dialogue that serves to enlighten and enliven a true anti-racist discussion of american popular music specifically and of global human music in general. with feeling nice vol. 4, tramp continues this important conversation, and having spent over 700 days unearthing a rousing selection across the board, offers it to you, now, as a double lp with full-color label scans, never before seen promo shots, and detailed biographical information - in some cases in the words of the artists themselves! also includes a single-sided bonus 7 inch plus download code for the full release, all housed in a gatefold sleeve.
born in redlands, california in 1980, marquis howell grew up in a lovely way. raised to appreciate hand-me-downs, secondhand goods & older influences, he started imitating chuck berry riffs on air guitar in elementary school to impress the girls. having little to no luck with the invisible instrument & with many promises & persuasions, his parents bought him his first guitar. marquis took lessons at the local guitar shop and as often as possible he would practice 4 or more hours a day.
taken from the forthcoming album the funky side of virtue recording studios, this super soul double-sider from bob marshall & the a/cs gives you a proper idea of what you can expect from the full length album. raw soul, heavy funk, slick disco grooves, vocal and instrumental treats, male and female singers, all on one album!
his time the tramp crew serve you with a delicious double sider by wayne mcghie. -the love you save- was never released when recorded in 1972 and this long-lost track is now available here for the first time on 45! in 1972, wayne signed with record producer greg hambleton and, with former members of the hitchhikers, recorded a couple of tracks including -love is the answer- and -the love you save- at toronto sound studios. -love is the answer- was released later that year as a 45rpm single with the instrumental version on the flip, however -the love you save- was never relaesed. now, more than four decades later, the music of wayne mcghie has been re-discovered and his songs and musicianship are finally receiving the attention so long deserved.
THE SOULFUL SIDE OF GME & MUSETTE RECORDS (LP + MP3)
12" Vinyl lp D13.03.17
much interest domestically and abroad has been generated over the years about an indie soul label in san diego, ca called musette records, whose short life span (1965-1968) only produced less than 20 singles, and no full albums. more than 40 years later, musette would achieve the collectible status among record buyers of northern soul, who recognize and appreciate the r&b grooves that pulsated on these now extremely rare singles.

nathan bartell grew up in a little town called ashburn, georgia but soon moved to atlanta georgia where he began to perform in the night clubs. in 1973 he released “top going down, bottom going up” on the soul-po-tion label. bartell remembers: “at the time i was having family problems. my wife didn’t want me and i was deep in love. i felt at that time that i was at the bottom of the pit and i wanted to rise up out of that mess because my wife made me feel that i was a nobody. i was not good enough for her - nobody wants you when you are down and out. she felt that she were on the top and i was on the bottom. this song was a message at that time.” there is nothing for us to add except that we are delighted to bring this little beauty back to new life.

three years ago, a group of renowned danish jazz musicians showed up on the copenhagen club scene. their goal was to put together a band which would fuse the west african music of fela kuti with the inimitable style of jazz bassist charlie mingus. the two creative directors michael blicher (sax) and gustav rasmussen (trombone / guitar) dubbed their project the kutimangoes (tkm). their debut album afro-fire took off like a rocket and won the danish grammy award in 2014 for best world music album and also was nominated in categories for best compositions as well as best alternative jazz album. following this success the band appeared on worldwide festivals and laid down frenetic and inspired performances in denmark and germany.
doktu rhute muuzic (formerly roy hytower) has enjoyed a full career from his late teens to this present day, a career that spans over 50 years. his first experiences were singing around mobile, alabama. in 1962 he came to chicago, replacing mighty joe young as rhythm guitarist for otis rush. often adopting a soul-slanted sound, hytower cut a handful of 45rpm singles in the 1960s and 70s for several local labels such as avin, expo, brainstorm, and jiffy. in june 2016 his tune “song of deliverance” was featured on tramp’s “peace chant- compilation. in recent years roy hytower has self-released a couple of cds, however under his new moniker, doktu rhute muuzic. “i’m in your corner” and “tip jar” were released on two different cd albums. this is the only chance to get these two wonderful tunes on vinyl. don’t miss it!
one more time we choose two little known gems for re-release on 45 rpm single. another single by the same group is pretty in demand by funk 45 collectors. these two sides are not that much known but they certainly deserve the same attention. while funky you is pretty good, uptempo funk, the b-side is the real beauty of this record. love come down is a fine example of chicago soul which has not been re-released yet. hopefully many people appreciate the work behind this release, from both the original musicians as well as those who are responsible for this high quality re-issue.
fans of tramp records may remember the band the bionic i. their song disco claus was featured on the third volume of santa s funk & soul christmas party. actually, the city news are none else than the bionic i! eric dunbar, member of both outfits, got introduced to the piano at age 5. in 1969 he started playing music with the city news band, a new orleans rhythm & blues band. bustin up is the side unless you like the kung-fu craze inspired chan the man that was around in 1975.
praise poems vol.1: gilles peterson (worldwide / brownswood rec.): one of my fave comps of 2015. praise poems vol.2: oliver korthals (mojo / out of spectrum on byte fm): extremely well put together track listing of artists which i have never heard before. left me with my mouth open... - highly recommend! praise poems vol.3: dom servini (wah wah 45s): this is incredible.
the revised brotherhood recorded their one and only 45rpm single tragedy b/w those things in 1971. the band was founded by organist john hurd who was taught music many days a week by roger troutman. the band released a full length album shortly after the 45 but it did not take long and they split up. thanks to john hurd all of you get the chance to enjoy these songs on 45rpm single, more than 40 years after its initial release.

FINGER LICKING CHICKEN / BACK BREAKING LOVE (7 INCH)
7" Vinyl UK13.06.16
it is more than astounding why this tune hasn t been resurrected for an ad for one of the many chain of fast food outlets. although the original 45 is neither superrare nor expensive, finger licken chicken is certainly one of the finest examples of philly funk. it was originally released on leoso but was re-released on the yew label. both sides were written by sonny fulton who teamed up with sandra for a killer r&b-ish funk cut on the flip titled back breaking love
ok, we have to admit that we could not resist to include -chances are your dance is mine on our latest feeling nice 3 compilation album before re-releasing it on 7inch. despite the fact that the original 45 is already quite in demand in collector circles we are sure that there are many people out there who have never heard about rickey andrews. much more important for us is that this re-issue is a welcome opportunity for the not-so-rich music lovers who do not spend hundred of $$$ for vintage vinyl records. thats our mission and that s what rickey andrews and his music definitely deserves.
friends and fans of tramp records in general, and of the feeling nice series specifically, will be feeling even nicer this time around with the release of this deep and soulful new collection: feeling nice volume 3. these recordings have been painstakingly sought-out and unearthed from as far away as hawaii, canada, and jamaica (in addition to the usual texas, ohio, and georgia). this music has been carefully transferred (in some cases form the sole known copy) and remastered to the highest standards of audio quality. the double vinyl lp comes in gatefold sleeve with bonus 7 inch and download code.
one year has passed since the last release in this series and, as always, the tramp records crew have been working hard during the last 12 months to come up with an equally fine selection of tunes for this brand new volume. our aim is to keep up with the quality of each release, a task which certainly does not get any easier as we step forward into the twenty first century.
in the late 60s early 70s many american soldiers where stationed all over germany. among those where musicians who played in several army bands like the east of underground who recorded a now sought after album after they had won the special services entertainment showband contest held in frankfurt in 1971. nobody knows which other bands participated in this contest, maybe also the soul explosion which were stationed in augsburg, upper bavaria. around the same time, a man named charles held opened a club in augsburg town called tarantel. furthermore he was running a record label of the same name on which he released a handful of 7inch singles from different, local bands, mainly not funky at all though. the soul explosions release remains the only one in the field of american soul & funk music. the band recorded a fantabulous double sider, one deep funk side with a soulful ballad on the flip which makes both hardcore funk and soul collectors happy. unfortunately there is no more information available about the band, only that they even performed live at the tarantel club.
raunchy r&b-funk out of seattle! camelot records, operated by jan kurtis skugstad from 1964 to 1966, released an astounding number of 45s during its short time of existence. jim pipkin & the boss fives mr. c.c. and walkin the duck were one of them. camelot is best known in collector circles for two monster releases by organist ron buford (accompanied on vocals by ural thomas on deep soul). originally mr. c.c. and walkin the duck were released on two different 45s. from now on you can save your og copies by playing this much crispier sounding re-issue.
a journey into deep soulful jazz & funk from the 1970s! praise poems vol.5 zeigt erneut, dass es bei musik immer auch um ein gef³hl geht. musik/ emotion/stimmung! jeder einzelne song auf diesem album ist ein meisterst³ck, das seinesgleichen sucht. diesmal mit dabei: gunn high school jazz reunion, keither florence, robert cote, plas johnson, charlie chisholm boss-tet, u.v.a.
it all began with a licensing inquiry for a sister funk cut which we wanted to include on our deep funk comp titled “feeling nice vol. 3”. after the deal was completed producer fred forsh mentioned that the backing band of nadine brown’s masterpiece “leave me alone” had released a 45 themselves under their name teakwood. after mr. forsh played us both sides we knew that this 45 would have to be re-issued. what was about to follow nobody of us ever expected. mr. forsh told us that teakwood recorded almost a dozen of songs which were supposed to be released on a full length album. for unspecified reasons the album was never released and it remained in the can for almost 40 years. finally, we are very proud to announce the release of teakwood’s debut album “a distant star” in early 2017. until then you have to be content with this 45 rpm single re-issue.
the iris bell trio was originally from charleston, wv and consisted of iris bell, dick pierson, and butch miles. in their seven years of existence the trio recorded two 45rpm singles and one full length album. this is their debut release and what a smokin monster it is.
two monster jazz-funk tracks back to back on a sweet 7” single. originally released on bobby hamilton’s rare dream queen album, this is the first time that those songs are available on tramp records’ prefered format. djs watch out, this 45 plays at 33 rpm. this way we ensured that both 5 minutes tracks sound as loud and crisp as possible!
pretty much one year ago we elated critics, reviewers, and music lovers with an album by the name of praise poems. 12 months later we are proud to introduce you to the third volume in this already highly acclaimed series. what warmth was to the first and abraham battat was to the second volume, feather is their counterpart on praise poems 3 (pp3). the double vinyl release includes a download code.
the intelligentsia have been claiming it for quite some time, and now finally, after many petitions, demonstrations and protests, a tiny little record label from germany has achieved what only google and troubleshooter par excellence angus macgyver have ever accomplished: admission into the worldwide dictionary. “to google” and “to macgyver” will soon be joined by the newly coined verb “to tramp”. the term can be decoded as “to seek and find the seemingly hopeless” or “looking for something hidden”, always connected with a positive output.
for several years, gold seekers at the most humble and tiniest record label on earth (however certainly one of the funkiest!) follow their dedicated passion. their brand new masterwork, movements 8, focuses on rare privately produced american soul, jazz and funk, and proudly bears the title as the 8th volume in the movements series.
the double vinyl release comes in gatefold sleeve and includes a download code.
these were the final words of the sales notes of praise poems volume 1 which we proudly released earlier this year. and indeed, since then, we discovered a tune which led us to continue to curate this series of obscure, soulful, jazzy and spiritual sounds from back in the day. the song to which we refer to is abraham battat s jazz-samba masterpiece, fly away. fly away is a righteous combination of sonorous jazz guitar, crackling drums and warm acoustic piano. floating through the tones as if in a private concert for you in your very living room is an earnest, honest vocal performance bringing a rainbow message of freedom and liberty to the world. this is the standard by which we judged the entirety of this compilation
none of the adjectives mentioned above apply for the albums of don mccaslin s warmth. born in tacoma washington in 1926, don moved to the san jose area during the first year of life. he took a few piano lessons as a child, but it was boogie woogie music that really inspired him. while attending san jose state he formed a band which had piano, guitar, vibes, bass and drums. following his graduation from college, don played music on the weekends and worked as a high school english teacher for fifteen years. then in 1970 he quit his teaching job and moved to santa cruz, making music his main pursuit. in 1971 he was invited to bring a jazz combo to play at a political rally. the event took place in the patio of the 19th century courthouse building, now called the cooper house. the owner told don that he was putting a sidewalk cafe there and invited him to play on opening day. don ended up playing there until the 1989 earthquake ruined the beautiful old building.
hungary may be a small country but it punches above its weight when it comes to the funk! formerly of the eastern bloc, the cultural and musical heritage of this part of europe is every bit as rich the likes of west africa and as such it is a melting pot bubbling with rhythms and influences. now imagine, if you will, some of this eastern european brew sprinkled with a little bit of afro spice and then blended with a massive dose of classic heavyweight stateside funk and you ll have some idea of what dokkerman & the turkeying fellaz (d&ttf) are all about.
a fine selection of rare soul, jazz & funk, just perfect to bring some warmth into the cold, dark winter days. the double vinyl lp includes a full album download code and detailed liner notes.
to all our respected critics, reviewers, and wisenheimer: be prepared to listen to this album in tranquility. if you do not do so you will most likely rate this release one out of five stars. and this is something which it certainly does not deserve. this album needs time and patience to be fully understood. and if you do so you will be enlightened by the true beauty of this selection.
another forgotton jewel from the deep vaults of miami legend henry stone. the original 45rpm single is an in-demand collectors piece for quite some time. as a result of that it has been bootlegged some years ago with crappy label artwork and, even worse, a different artist on the b-side. so, fasten your seat belts, here is the long awaited, official re-issue of a rare groove classic. it comes with the original label artwork and part 1 / part 2 on both sides. essential!
here comes another heavyweight double-sider with probably the two rawest and nastiest deep-funk cuts ever recorded in detroit, michigan. despite the fact that both tunes have been bootlegged on several compilation albums during the last years, we at tramp decided to go for this official re-issue. save yourself some money and get this high quality re-issue which even comes with the original label artwork.
goldband records played a key role in documenting and shaping of musical traditions, tastes, and trends, both regionally and internationally since 1944. the focus of the goldband catalog is certainly set on country & western, swamp pop, and cajun music. however, from the 1960s until the early 1970s goldband, and its sub-label anla records, released many high-quality soul and rhythm & blues recordings. simply put, shuler had an ear for talent. he always believed in *... giving a man a chance, otherwise, how would you discover what somebody could do?* that was the guiding philosophy and the secret to the success of goldband records.
the double vinyl lp comes in gatefold sleeve, including download code.
the blue bottles were founded by guitarist matt taylor, drummer stephen russell and bassist dan lott in 2011. the concept being to play no-nonsense heavily percussive raw funk, aimed directly at the dance floor but with songs and melodies that will lodge in the skull and refuse to jettison. fast forward to 2014 with numerous gigs under the belt (and now swelled in size to 6 members) and the band decamped to record 13 tracks - all live in one room in one day - including these two featured tracks. a healthy dollop of sonic fairy dust was then sprinkled all over the mix by leading uk funk producer lack of afro. a number of these tracks, all as yet unreleased, have been getting heavy rotation on bbc radio 2s craig charles funk & soul show. the band have a shared love for all the great 60/70s funk classics - lee dorsey, james brown, betty davis, and so many others. but dont mistake the blue bottles for a retro styled bunch of suit wearing imitators - with a diverse range of musical tastes and backgrounds, the band have been variously described as the mc5 playing funk.
having started and performed in several vocal groups since high school, jimmy lynch became one of the most influental black comedians on planet earth. during his long career, which still continues to this day, he adapted the funky tramp and mr. motion character to vinyl, selling hundred thousands copies of his multiple comedy albums throughout years. beside being a recording artist, lynch also appeared in some movies of his longtime friend, legendary comedian, rudy ray moore such as dolomite (1975), the human tornado (1976), and petey wheatstraw: the devil s son-in-law (1977). notions of mr. motion and on broadway were originally released back-to-back on 45rpm single on the laval label in the late 1960s. the quality paired with the rarity made us to go for this official re-issue. we hope you agree with us.
shelley fisher is something like a legend within the world of rare funk record collectors. the reason for this is *i ll leave you girl (for somebody new)*, a song which he wrote and released in 1970. backed with an equally great version of the standard *st. james infirmary*, copies of the original 45rpm single are highly sought after by djs and record collectors. now everyone can afford to get his hands on this amazing two-sider without paying a small fortune.
while every rare groove dj/collector is familiar with the name don gardner, the average music buyer probably isnt. some of you may remember one particular song though: *i need your lovin* from 1962. performed by don gardner & dee dee ford, it climbed up to #4 on the billboard charts and even made the pop top twenty. but that aint all. what was about to follow might not have had enough penetration power to jump on the charts again, but every single song don gardner recorded in that decade had pure class.
the double vinyl lp comes in gatefold sleeve and includes a full album download code.
now and then we here at the tramp office receive material from new soul bands from all over the world. quite often it is nothing of interest for us, except for a few. the tibbs, originating from the netherlands, are certainly one of those exceptions. the tibbs were formed in the early summer of 2012. started as a cult act, playing obscure instrumentals and long forgotten memphis and northern soul classics, they soon felt the urge to expand the repertoire with their own songs. the result: a surprising, exciting mix of heartfelt originals. with a lineup of drums, bass guitar, lead guitar and hammond organ, a three-man horn section and the feisty vocals of frontwoman elsa bekman, the tibbs amount to seductive garage soul with a dash of blues, funk, jazz and surf.
roy porter is best known for playing an important part of the bebop movement in the 1940s. he had played with guitarist teddy bunn and howard mcghee as well as charlie parker on the now classic dial session on 28 march 1946. in 1971 he released *jessica*, the debut album under roy porter sound machine. we found it a good idea to put the vocal and instrumental versions back to back on one 45rpm single. especially because neither of the two have ever been released on 45, until now! so here you go, and be quick! 500 copies pressed. do not miss the two long-players *the story of roy porter sound machine* (trcd/lp-9018) and *roy porter sound machine - generation 94* (trlp-9028), both available on tramp records.
drummer rich legault, bassist denny lewan, singer/guitarist mike peace and rhythm guitarist ben wiesneiwski were all members of another wisconsin-based band named attila and the huns which later became filet of soul. this is their most sought after 45rpm single release, released in 1969 on the dynamic sound label. for all deep-funk fans out there, do your own thing has been recently featured on the compilation album *feeling nice vol.2*(trlp/cd-9027), compiled by daniel wanders and tobias kirmayer.
the eminent stars, founders saxophonist ben mendes and drummer toon oomen love the feel of dr. john, freddie king and the meters. the musical energy that emerged like lightening from cities like new orleans during the 60s/70s. after various get downs and musical happenings, the two planned to record a session with some great musician friends. tracks were layed out and etched in, live. all in one dusty old room with some vintage equipment to capture the sounds of an old but not forgotten groove. joined by american singer-songwriter bruce james and vocalists such as imelda, lana gordon and steffen morrison make the eminent stars complete.
the lp includes a download voucher for the full album and is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies.
limited edition of 500 copies in gatefold sleeve, including liner notes and label scans of all 45rpm singles. the majority of these songs appear on a full-length album for the very first time and are extensively remastered for premium sound quality.
it is like this – tramp records know vintage funk and soul. they know what you want to hear before you know you want to hear it. hell, they even know what you want to hear before you even knew it existed. but in a world where the rediscovery of golden era 60s and 70s funk and soul has been ongoing for the best part of a quarter of a century, how can this still be possible? what is left that hasnt already been repackaged, re-released, compiled and covered to within an inch of its life? listen to feeling nice volume 2 and you will get the answer.
super loud deluxe double gatefold lp plus bonus exclusive future holy grail 7 inch single *carol veal - h way of love*.
ba-da-boom! the tramp records crew celebrates its 10th anniversary with one more fantastic release in the story of series. another wonderful musician which deserves to be (re-)discovered: professor earl lett. although his songs have been dance floor favourites of both soul and funk djs all over europe, this is the first-ever compilation of his funkiest 1960s/70s material.
tramp records continues to celebrate its 10th anniversary with another exciting release in the story of series. this is the first-time ever compilation of rare 45rpm single tracks by lonnie lester, officially licensed and including detailed liner notes.
after recording primal rock and roll, rockabilly and garage tracks out of his parents basement in orwigsburg, pennsylvania, engineer/entrepreneur clay barclay expanded his horizons by producing popular 1960s blue-eyed soul groups. in 1966, barclay hooked up with ron metz and agent pat farraro to form a trio, which turned out to be a winning team for the next two years. the three set up a shop in the shillington section of reading and produced many groups. one of those bands was the incredible showmen. it was formed in the late 60s and continued up until the mid 70s. around 1968 they released their one and only 45rpm single (to love to love b/w james brown boo-ga-loo). though neither tunes did much, funk 45 collectors are more than glad that they left behind this piece of music history. james brown boo-ga-loo is, obviously, a tribute to the godfather of soul that must have had the dance floor jumping when they played it. a monster cut for funk djs. dont sleep on this one!
although tramp records is known worldwide for its expertise in soul, funk and jazz from the 1960s and 70s, label boss tobias kirmayer always had a deep connection to hip hop and rap music. his dream to compile prototype rap songs has existed for quite some time. in the search of quality songs, kirmayer realized that it takes more than to simply scratch the surface. the challenge was to locate enough proper material to meet the criteria to be called prototype rap. the answer is ancestors of rap.
the deluxe double-gatefold lp contains a bonus 7 inch and a booklet with detailed liner notes and scans of all labels and is limited to 1000 copies.
it has been some time since the qualitons have made some noise on the current nu-funk scene. their debut album >panoramic tymes< from 2010 received amazing reactions from people all over the world. wah wah records co-owner dom servini stated >its like the kinks, tony allen and brian auger have been chopped up and fused together to create a trippy, rollercoaster musical tour de force<. what a perfect description. so it was only a matter of time that producer kanada káosz and the band would get together to start writing and arranging new songs for their second album.

vocalist gary walker (who recorded a couple of 45s for the jin label in lousiana and later teamed up with the boogie kings) should not be mistaken for the drummer gary walker (that came to some commercial success in the uk in the 1960s). this christmas tune from 1965 obviously renders homage to james brown s original from earlier that year which had marked nothing less than the beginning of funk music. ladies and gentlemen, sing along, shake your hips and dance because: santas funk & soul christmas party is goin on. limited to 250 copies to promote the forthcoming xmas compilation santas funk & soul christmas party out 28/11/2011 on tramp records.
christmas compilations are often cheesy, smooth selections of bland, overplayed seasonal pabulum. even announced with funky or groovy, it often leaves listeners disappointed. so were jan and tobias. first, they were bugged out by the all filler-no-killer compilations. the second and more important reason was that of the considerable number of proper rare groove tunes recorded and released in the 1960s and 70s, many languished in obscurity. the pair started a collaboration to create a funky-soul xmas compilation.
the lp sleeve contains scans of all 45rpm single labels as well as liner notes to each song. the vinyl comes with a gatefold cover and is limited to 500 copies.
the tunes on this compilation are top-end rarities, even for the advanced record collector. daniel and tobias started work on this project in the beginning of 2010. compared to the obscurities to be found here this is not a long time though. the effort, time and enthusiasm they put into it has not been documented. if it had, it probably would have amounted to a thankless task. why? the answer is simple, cd and vinyl sales are far away from what they used to be and people who pay for mp3s are the minority. there is no reason to do such a project for the money nowadays. obviously, daniel and tobias are not only collectors and djs but totally into sharing with the world their passion. each of them chose six songs from their collection to present for the first time to a worldwide audience. the buyer can be assured not only of the rarity and quality, but of the refined taste and heartfelt care that went into this product.
the vinyl comes with a gatefold cover. all songs have been officially licensed and carefully mastered to provide the highest listening pleasure possible.
carl sherlock holmes started gigging in the early sixties forming carl holmes & the commanders with whom he recorded a full length album for atlantic in 1962 entitled >twist party at the roundtable<. later on he recorded a couple of 45s for the parkway and verve labels. in may of 1966 a pre-experience jimi hendrix gigged with the group but never recorded with them. after a final 45 for the local philly label black jack, the group disbanded and carl formed the sherlock holmes investigation, a solid outfit backed by a strong rhythm section packed with congas, vibes, flute, organ and sax. phillys sigma sound studio was the place they recorded their sole album and curtis r. statens crs records was the label that released it.
and here we are. available for the first time on 45rpm single we chose the smokin, breakbeat-heavy funk of black bag while the flip-side contains the latin-inspired jam modesa.
limited to 250 hand-numbered copies.
afro beat, the original hybrid of jazz, funk and west african highlife created by fela ransome-kuti and tony allen in the late 1960s, is everything else than dead in 2011: open your mind and ears and enjoy the exciting sounds of odu, afromotive, jojo quo & his challengers and all the others. fela declared his music >the progressive music of the future<. well, the future has come. this is contemporary afro beat.
the story of the qualitons began in 2007 when dj/producer kanada kaosz decided to put together a funk/soul/afrobeat band. he went to dozens of concerts to hand-pick musicians for this project. this is the way the qualitons were born. the band were named after the living memory of the former hungarian recording company qualiton - a record label which existed from the late 50s up to the 70s.
the funk on this compilation is contemporary but the message of funk is as old as humanity itself. funk as tramp records sees it is a vibrant and viable music that was born from a transformative period in american history - the sound of the growing pains of a young country. contemporary funk gathers inspired bands from today whose hearts still beat for funks timeless truth, and connects them with this rich legacy of american music. contemporary funk assembles bands whose hearts beat for the original, raw soul sound they want to keep alive in its original form. the sugarman 3, whose former musicians are now members of the famous dap kings (of sharon jones fame) are included alongside will holland (quantic soul orchestra) and finlands no.1 funk band, the soul investigators (of nicole willis fame) are all to be found here. however, the main focus of the album is on new bands on the scene such as derobert & the half truths, the funk revolution and the ben martin trio. original funk music lives on in the 21rst century and contemporary funk is a great proof of that.
tramp records continue their mission to bring you beautiful, long lost masterpieces. here we have another two which until now have only ever been released on lp. sarah webster fabios album, jujus alchemy of the blues is considered something of a holy grail lp in the collectors scene. this is the first time these two tracks have ever been officially issued on 7inch. sweet songs is the tune of the album. not only a djs dream but also a highly respected dance floor number. several breakdowns by drums, percussion, bass, and guitar makes this one a real standout track. jujus alchemy of the blues is featured twice on the album, one being the instrumental, the second version with vocals. we thought that the instrumental version is the more suitable b side. raw funk done the right way, just perfect for the flip of this sweet release.
tramp celebrates its 5 year anniversary with fussin and cussin, the 20th release in its re issue series. the first re issue 7inch single on tramp was nothinbut a party by the blenders. it was originally recorded in north carolina in 1971, the same year as four wheel drives fussin and cussin. during the early 1970s, walter grady was busy producing several bands. he also ran his own small, short lived labels such as cobra, grayslak, and linco, the label on which fussin and cussin was released in august of 1971. grady had some local success with bands such as the electric express, whose song, its the real thing, was a local hit and thus one of the easier records to find today. fussin and cussin is exactly the opposite, it is probably the rarest and most sought after release on the linco label.
praise poems vol.1: gilles peterson (worldwide / brownswood rec.): one of my fave comps of 2015. praise poems vol.2: oliver korthals (mojo / out of spectrum on byte fm): extremely well put together track listing of artists which i have never heard before. left me with my mouth open... - highly recommend! praise poems vol.3: dom servini (wah wah 45s): this is incredible. praise poems vol.4:
2011 holiday collection. the project started in 2010 when jan illustrated the diversity of more than 50 christmas tunes in the field of jazz, funk and soul to tobias kirmayer of tramp records, germany. although some of the titles had already been compiled, there were exceptional songs that grabbed their attention. major record companies owned a handful of the initially pre-selected songs. despite the fact that these terrific songs never topped the charts the quality of this compilation easily shakes hands with famous christmas records of major artists like james brown or lou rawls. ladies and gentlemen, sing along, shake your hips and dance because: santas funk & soul christmas party is goin on.
