bcee & villem take on 2 of the finest cuts from jonny l’s “in a jungle” album. it’s always difficult tacking a remix from such a legend of the scene as jonny l, but these tracks demonstrate that it can be done.
at the tail-end of 2017, xl recordings reissued jonny ls seminal d&b album sawtooth on vinyl for the first time. a move that further cemented the records game-changer status, dj mag hailed the record as being still the future, while resident advisor said 20 years later, sawtooth still sounds like an outlier. so after showcasing this 20-year-old classic, xl recordings are today releasing a 12inch containing remixes of the most iconic track from the lp, piper. with efforts from peverelist, overmono, powell and zomby, these remixes go some way towards showing the influence jonny ls music still has on a wide range of contemporary electronic artists.

two years since his mesmerising debut lp >its a jazz thing< transported d&b dancefloors across the world back to the halcyon days of early-noughties liquid-funk bliss, the unabashed ambassador of vintage d&b is back doing exactly that: vintage d&b. the template is the same – lavish melodies, spring-fresh beats and unfathomably orginal soul samples – but this history lesson just grew some meaty balls: >nrg 93< channels the spirit of old-skool hardcore, >skyward bound< threads classic amen clatter and heavy low-end through sublime 70s guitar loops, and the wrinkle-tastic ragga twins jet in to holler magificently over rollicking experimental stepper >enter the jungle<. experimental steppers? utah jazz? believe it – true to form, the renowned party-rocking dj is quite happy bucking all preconceptions as well as ignoring musical trends, and the results are his best work yet. i dj album review 9/10.
