support from andre rozzo, alex jones, so inagawa, jamie jones, matthew styles-harris, laurent garnier, steve lawler, nic fanciulli. luna records is a new uk based label from respected club promoter/ dj/ producer paul bowen, the man behind middlesbroughs infamous >riff raff< events. the label is set to release music from some pretty well established artists with an emphasis on stripped back chunky house music and in that vein the debut single sees the much hailed german producer chris lattner step up get the imprint firing in the right direction. lattner has been djing for the best part of two decades, initially gracing the decks at hannover techno parties before word of his talent spread, seeing him strike out to play across germany. he has hosted a radioshow for australias pulse radio, worked as a booking agent for lessizmore and has had releases on labels such as einmaleins musik and wba. his passion for electronic music has shone through in everything he has done and led him to produce some great records, to which can now be added the luna debut >memory<. this single release kicks off with lattners original of >memory<, a solid tech driven slice of house with heavily effected vocal samples and a simple floor shaking groove. this is understated underground house music at its best, deep chunky and highly effective. first of the two remixes comes from ex-peace division man justin drake, who builds on the vibe of the original, thickening out the drums and layering some heavy filters over the sythn stabs to great effect. a straightforward and highly effective arrangement provides everything that is needed in this excellent reworking. finally we have a remix from bearweasel, who have been providing choice cuts in house music over the last year via labels such as tsuba, supernature, bloop and murmur. for their >lazy dub< they take things back to basics and turn in a slab of deep and dubby house with an emphasis on razor sharp percussion and earth moving bass. this is a superb debut from a label that is sure to become a major fixture in 2010.

leeds based audiojack stormed on to the scene with their chart busting single >robot<, back in 2006. since then theduo have stayed true to the leeds house institution that is 20/20 vision, releasing multiple 12 inches and an album over the last 3 years. one can only imagine how giddy we are to finally slot these nice young chaps for a release on get digital. anchored by a smattering of effects, quirky soundsand sliced up vocals - that even a sushi chef would bow in approval of – made it almost easy to crown >kicks forkicks< the a-side. although storming right from the get-go, it is the two break-downs that build up to reintroduce the beats that provide a dramatic tension effect, withoutsacrificing their credibility. a tune equally affective as it is infectious.

wurst are going from strength to strength with another killer 12inch, this time from ulysses. latin combo features pretty much no latin elements on first listen although we think we can hear a few claps and percussion samples from a charanga 76 cover of chic that might be influencing the title. both tracks feature dubbed out drums and a warm analog feel throughout making for a pleasant listen and two solid club tracks at the same time.

emptyset is a bristol based production project formed by james ginzburg, aka ginz, boss of the multiverse network of labels and paul purgas a longstanding electronic dj/collector and curator of this years we can elude control compilation. their collective agenda has been exploring techno music’s diverse influences and compiling them to a studio template focused on tight production and detailed sound design. inspired by the city’s culture of bass lead production as well as the global resurgence of electronic music, the sound has been described as techno meets dubstep folded back onto techno again, a description which is perhaps the most insightful to date. the project owes credit to the classic releases of m-plant, sahko and chain reaction as well as more recent producers such as alva noto, deathprod and burial. emptyset acts as a research project connecting the ideas of a modern dancefloor with experimental approaches to music and its design.

tokyos kez yms follow up to his maiden yore ep, city soul, opts for a more pronounced party vibe, as evidenced by the plenitude of voices that repeatedly pop up during butterflys four deep house tracks. the material sounds of japanese producer kazuki yamaguchi puts a clubby spirit to this ep. propelled by a beautifully warm and soulful bass pulse, inner city funk grooves mightily for five blissful minutes, its rhythm bolstered by the crisp snap of the snare, the funky wah wah of an electric guitar, and the occasional interjection of a synthesizer melody. bridge to bridge quickly charts its own percolating course with the addition of a stepping disco house pulse and a male voices sleepy, off handed musings. bringing the lights down for a romantic make-out session, the sexy low tide chills the pace slightly so that spent dancers can catch their breath and replenish themselves before the next go-round. of the four tracks, the title cut grooves most powerfully in merging a rambunctious broken beat drum attack with an equally driving bass line and manic electric guitar soloing. play these jams loud.

this is a long awaited release on theomatic from a russian-born (now czech-based) house-quartet d-pulse. this definitely should have happened before as all d-pulse members and theomatic’s commander andrei zakharov (an-2) are fellow-townsmen and have known each over many years. d-pulse are known for their expressive live performances (guitar, bass and keys), everything you hear they play live and their unique vibe can shake any audience, be it hip moscow cuties or shy hick-town chicks. the band’s hectic schedule has put this ep on hold for several months, but at last guys managed to organize themselves and lay final touches to the production. the a-side is a mellow, spaced-out disco jam called ‘prekrasna’ - the russian for ‘beautiful’, especially when referred to ladies. the dancefloor-aimed ‘moments’ on the flip side starts off with hypnotic, dubbed-out guitar and atmospheric synths laid over fat house beat. it gradually leads to the breakdown followed by guitar driven blast-off and takes you to the orbital heights from wherever you are.

two cool housy minimal slammers: this is 100% club music. we can see the tracks being played heavily by a lot of djs. relaxed but at the same time moving very rhythmically, both tracks have a modern way of getting the party going

her remix of eero johannes >we could be skweeeerooos< on the b-side simply switches up the tempo of the original, makes the rhythm nice and bouncy and tightens up the original adding some trademark bent melodies and a see-sawing bassline. the end result is a linear, melodic track that feels like its somewhere between wiley and aphex at their sweetest.

the 2nd vinyl release of house mannequin features two disco house tracks and comes as a limited edition white label. the first track is titled: but i cant see that dancin you. it is based on an old 80s track which has been cut up to a perfect modern disco house track. a track for the peak time of every disco house set! the second side consists of a gently grooving disco edit track named draw. both songs have a very positive vibe. although made for the dance floor, you can enjoy both tracks on your small home hifi too.greg wilson, jesse rose and many more supported the last release house mannequin ep1 and the new ep will definitely find lots of new friends in the house community.

the particular view on a musical future might have been considerably different when olaf hilgenfeld (berlin) met iftah gabbai (jerusalem) for first sessions in 2004. the piano player hilgenfeld used the accordion that time mainly, whilst gabbai was using all instruments available, a computer was among those more by chance. only one year later the duo skinnerbox played regularly on such uplifting, innovative off-partys that came up in the new techno generation again.
that was just the beginning. skinnerbox have developed a purely electronically composed and performed music (partly featuring vocals by elle_p) – that is not based on loops but improvised techno inspired house and minimal house. the roles in the duo are clearly settled: olaf hilgenfeld – moog synthesizer, iftah gabbai – hardware drum machines, max/msp und ableton live.
all these distinct impacts and effects can be heard on their various releases from the last two years, but far better in their live sets. skinnerbox are an experience, taking you on expedition with paralyzing minimal, breaking house, hard-edged techno-jazz, and ambient electronica futurism.
it was a desire to eternalize this play- & colorful diversity, often just caused by the moment, as entire homogeneity. thus, they needed to leave temporarily their environmental techno and minimal house scapes. >king of spades and marmalades< – the result – is a jazz opus wrapped into a disco suitcase. it is a reminiscence as well as going far ahead of daily musical habits, shown not at least by the order of tracks, do not starting with a stunning hit of the album, but with 20 minutes of challenge.

brand new intrusion! the first killer twelve of 2009 and the perfect way to soothe the post nye hangover. the title track >seduction< is an epic beauty as deep as the sea which does exactly as the title suggest, a sort of seduction of sound if you will, so immersive you could swim in it’s three dimensions. the bass line is so deep you can feel the vibrations in jamaica! the song soars along and in minutes reveals its magical analogue frequencies as shards of blissful chords sail around your speakers in a full spectrum panorama affair so easy to sink into. next up is “silence” leading us into ambient territory for a short but sweet three minute excursion which i could only imagine as a soundtrack while floating in deep space. the release comes to a close with cv313’s near 12 minute rendition, a beautiful dub house soundscape filled with tribal rhythms and gorgeous atmosphere recalling moments from echospace’s landmark album “the coldest season” on modern love. this is music which clearly focuses on every fine detail, filled with loads of space and bass and the analogue warmth we’ve come to love from the echospace signature. as with all things echospace this is severely limited and is pressed on to beautiful coloured vinyl.

>charger< is a massive track! the track seems to suck up air to created a vacuum and also sounds a bit as if there was a problem with the ignition of the charger! once it gets going it is indeed a heavy rocking track!>firebird< is a fat sounding house track, which can be plaid by house djs as well as techno djs using a cool walking bassline and a super tight slapping snare and cool house vocals on top of it! starting housy the track develops into a hi energy, appegiator driven track showing alex unders talent for moving genres skilfully from one end to the other! this is a great track!

sychi sychi is the second and exclusive release of denkbar,a new and promising russian label managed by alex danilov and michel misha! the little owls attack and the russians strike again… analog passages, strings and flutes were very harmoniously entered in this hypnotizing atmosphere.
the first one delivered by b.a.d is so groovy, perfect for dancing… it features conversations between two spaniards and this emphasized the atmosphere of this track.
>de color verde< is the second track and was made by one of the labelboss, alex danilov! it offers a warm climate, a pleasant sound of a«short» guitar and sensual piano sequences.
with >weg afro<, the third track by michel, the other part of denkbar, you can imagine the shaman dancing near the fire and a church full of people of african origins! a lot of basses and percussions – giving you an excellent combination.

belgian producers sierra sam & marcus vector return to their house-oriented project d.i.y. (dumb irresponsible youth) for three more sly, sexy groovers, with contributions from dop, big bully and markus fix.
while sam and marcus are generally known for their more techno-focused productions, last years house tools vol. 1 was a minor hit, with tracks included in ellen alliens resident advisor podcast, jay hazes recent fabric47 mix cd, and m.a.n.d.y.s charts. since then, they ve kept busy with their own toys for boys label, meanwhile sierra sam has co-produced the debut album by bloody mary on contexterrior.
still, they ve found the time to crank out these new elegant-yet-sleazy cuts, and while vol. 1 was purely instrumental, for vol. 2 they ve roped in some guest vocalists. first up is their collab with comrades dop (circus company, eklo, supplement facts). >kilimanjaro< features d.i.y.s tribal bounce combined with dops seedy, trent reznor-on-opiates vocal delivery.
the flipside has two versions of >suck my caulk<: d.i.y.s original elevates thelevel of melody and sunshine, weaving in the voice of big bully (known forhis work on spectral, get physical and vakant). markus fix of cecille offers his own interpretation, bringing the track down into deep house territory. placed in the right hands, these tools can do some serious dancefloor damage!

cobblestone jazz founding member danuel tate is back on the solo tip with his newest project for wagon repair - wag055 >doesnt like you back ep< - and this time, probably as a result of spending so much time on the road with bandmates mathew jonson and tyger dhula, he is bringing it harder. although some familiar elements from his first ep, >pushcard<, can be found in the horns and synths mixing together to form the beds for the quirky vocoder, this five-track release comes more direct. >doesnt like you back< reflects the moment on the dance floor when you realize the woman next to you is way out of your league, which we guess isnt a bad feeling as long as you like dancing with super hot women.
