the legendary gig that joe strummer, singer from the punk rock band “the clash” attended and inspired his writing their classic ‘white man in hammersmith palais’ took place on the 05th june 1977. at the hammersmith palais venue on shepherd’s bush road w6, london during the height of punk mania. the full line up for the show were all jamaican artists dillinger, leroy smart, delroy wilson (all the first time from jamaica) and ken boothe. “ken boothe for uk pop reggae” who had already scored some hits with ‘everything i own’ and ‘crying over you’ in 1974. joe strummer was expecting roots, rock, reggae but the sound system this evening ‘admiral ken sound’ was playing ‘four tops all night’ as in soul and northern soul that were staple crowd pleasers at the time to warm up the audience, but in joe’s eyes the music should have reflected more jamaican roots based music. the song also deals with bigger issues of black and white unity, but some people including the punk rockers. “they’re all too busy fighting, for a good place under the lighting”. joe strummer himself was looking for fun. “i’m the whiteman in the palais... just looking for fun”.

reissue of balearic gem spanglish movement from little known band hot pepper! originally released as a private pressing in 1978 and featuring famous drummer jesus munoz tilico, a giant musician who appeared on countless recordings and accompanied famous figures like paul mauriat and carl tjader among many others. four superb long tracks including the cosmic underground club classic ritual song. hot pepper was a studio project created by mexican drummer / producer /arranger jesus munoz tilico who in the late 70s decided to record an album in a disco-funk vein, helped by some of his friends who were top session musicians. “spanglish movement” was the result, written and produced by “tilico”, released in 1978 as a tiny private edition housed in a fabulous afro cover. being tilico an enormous drummer, you can expect here lots of heavy drums, congas and percussion, surrounded by crazy space synths, male-female vocals, latin horns, afro touches and occasional fuzz guitar.

the songs, the words, the melodies in this album, they all matter to me because they represent the real time outworking of my own trauma, pain and discovery of joy and peace. but there is a life inside this record equally important to all of the above, which is also trying to be communicated. it’s almost like how listening to a song in a foreign language doesn’t hinder you from absorbing what the song is communicating. in listening closely as i expose myself to myself, that is where the art is. maybe every time we have the courage to unabashedly be true in ourselves, the courage to do the same is received by someone else.

full disclosure...i changed the entire release schedule to jam this record in this year. when you listen, hopefully can see why. from getting the demos during my breakfast, the record was agreed and in the schedule by the time i’d finished my dinner. currently if you cut austin ato i believe he’ll bleed an amazing record. this record swings between a peak-time hands in the air pink loveheart vibe, hot and heavy classic sample based house, and some real basement orientated machine-made jacking house. its like a quadruple a side release, and i personally find it impossible to pick a favourite on here.

metempsychosis vinyl 002 invites you to the sonic soundscapes of flaminia along with remixes by headless horseman and ancestral voices. an epic trip inspired by the sanskrit story of agni, the god of fire, originally narrated in ancient india. dark percussive sounds walk the listener through the fire’s curse to be the devourer of everything in this world, destroyer of everything it touches. ethereal drones and atavistic strings reveal the turning point of this adventure when the curse is reversed in such a way that agni - the fire - becomes the purifier of all the things it touches. this story, brought to life by sound, teaches that reality and matter itself are actually shaped by perception and can change according to interpretation. fire can be feared as a destroyer or admired as a purifier. fire, just like death, is a crucial element of life on earth. a different perception of the world can change your world. so abandon yourself and embrace the fire.

the first in a series of compilations by jura soundsystem is a blend of dub, ambient, downtempo, boogie and proto house with a focus on music never before released on vinyl, sought after out of print titles and some special versions edited specifically for the album. . the intention with this project was to delve deeper into the reissue pond and unearth some lesser known tracks and artists. highlights include smackos (aka legowelt) ambient epic ‘we can watch alf in the hotel room’, never before released on vinyl, the dub / psych hybrid of minus group’s ‘black shadow’, kash’s sought after ‘percussion sundance’ and special edits of ken dang and tabou combo. the end of the album includes some soothing ambient tools.

time flies, doesn’t it? it sure does when you suddenly wake up to celebrate your 10th vinyl release as a small label, which is the case with us. but as we’re all about quality over quantity, our latest 12” offering comes with a superb collage of fresh music by the one and only radicall. having made his mark as one of the most consistent producers, known for his trademark combination of strong, dynamic drum programming and soft and booming basslines, radicall keeps on delivering top-quality music with each next release. and this 12” single is no exception to the said rule. the playful, happy-go-lucky “touch” is a bit of a nod to the old-school/rave/early jungle/footwork/you-name-it style given its complex drum pattern and an array of acid-style synthetic samples and tinges of vocal here and there, but sticking to modern-day standards nonetheless. the flipside comes with “build me up” remixed by bungle, who surely knows how to make good things just as good as they are, but yet a bit different. and here we have the brazilian powerhouse reshaping radicall’s work to make it a bit lighter and upbeat, but still retaining some elements of rawness mixed perfectly with traces of nostalgia. an excellent job, breathing a new life into the original piece - a darker-shaded straight-to-the-point roller, which you can get as a digital bonus added to the release. so here it is - the tenth vinyl item in our catalogue, featuring names you simply can’t go wrong with. what better way to celebrate the occasion?
