nick anthony simoncino is synonymous with the revival of italian house music over the past five years or so, and so it feels right for him to be delivering this album to vibraphone. of course, simoncino has more than enough skills (and hardware) to make something truly special, and that s apparent from the opening strains of -mystic adventures- onwards. there s a sense of urgency and mystery woven into tracks like -righteous rule-, where haunting leads wobble over sizzling drum machines, and the overall mood is redolent of 80s soundtracks mixed with the uneasy side of chicago house music. maintaining a punchy finish throughout and constantly reaching for the spooky side of machine soul, simoncino has more than delivered for the legendary italian label.

following on from his debut ep on drumcode earlier this year, ilario alicante returns. for the past few years ilario alicante has enjoyed something of an unintentional ibiza kinship with adam beyer. when the swede played his special annual sets on the amnesia terrace for cocoon, for three years out of four, the italian has been right there playing alongside him, ensuring his talents were on the radar of the drumcode chief. ilario made his first appearance on the label in 2016 with the stirring temporary featuring on a-sides vol.4, before securing his first full-length release with the awakened ep that dropped earlier this year. figures & echoes deepens his contribution to the label with half a dozen powerful cuts. figure of ra opens the ep, combining a rousing vocal loop, pulsating beats and effective melodic interlude to fantastic effect. the acid runner follows and is true to its name, characterised by echoing vocal effects that lead to a piercing 303-line that hits with peak-time power. virgos echoes features a persistent synth line that combining effectively with lush layers of melody to create an atmospheric impact. third eye delivers an exhilarating dose of rave thanks to the hypnotizing riff that runs throughout.

2013 marks marcos valle s 70th birthday and the 50th anniversary of the brazilian native s debut long player. for the past few years, light in the attic s been obsessed with valle s early 70s work, originally recorded for the odeon label. it s where a new modern brazilian pop sound effortlessly mixed bossa nova, baio and samba with foreign influences like jazz, rock, pop, soul and funk, bringing to mind the sounds of jean claude vannier and david axelrod. tip!!

another tape extracted from the sony vault for the first time since the records was released in 1980. a floaty disco masterpiece that has been on the soul scene for time but deserves a broader appreciation. we present this in the much rarer issue format with the excellent ballad on the flip -blame it on me-, most o.g copies are missing this track. how the band never made it past one single i don t know as both tracks are fire.

placed under the media spotlights in 2011 thanks to their joyful and loony indie pop, concrete knives went on to sign with the legendary uk imprint bella union (beach house, fleet foxes, lift to experience, etc.). their first album be your own king was successfully released the following year, selling more than 7000 copies in france alone and sending the group of friends on the road to play more than 150 live dates all over europe. quiet for the past six years and after recording with danish producer andreas pallisgaard (trentemøller, goat, pinkunoizu), the band is set to return with a much awaited second effort on the french label vietnam (h-burns, chevalrex pharaon de winter).

last summer during an evening spent with my friend dj topha, we came upon the everlasting subject of old versus new. i m finding so much great music right now, and not just digging back in time but exploring our own timeline geographically too, he said, the level of production these days is rising fast. you have to check out these snippets from a new label based in casablanca. not long after, in an interesting twist of fate, driss bennis and i began to exchange music: i shared his soundcloud for the first casa voyager release, and he sent me a promo copy which i played out a lot. it seemed only logical to ask him for music for basic moves. later that summer we met in paris for a convivial back to back at dawidu s shop, te iubesc records and sapology. it was as simple as that, and in a few weeks basic moves 04 was ready. night train and overseas blew me away by their quality - the tracks are retro-esque yet fresh, and stem from a loose approach to electro. their arrangements are very smart, not everything is revealed the first time round. the more you listen, the more you understand that the power of the tracks lies in the details. together with ailsa s artwork, stefan s cut and chris mixes the release fell so smoothly into place. i have come to realise how important it is for the scene to release recently produced music as well as treasures from the past. you can t build a community by only playing old records. it s about a combination, about finding gems that glide together. old and new. and for that, i think both these dj booth tracks really fit the bill.

the identity of belgian mystery man beton is a complete mystery to us. what we do know is that twin turbo owner/assistant webmaster tiga has called this record the best release of the past five years. even when you consider that tiga believes he experiences time differently from the rest of us, that still means the soundtrack of your life for the past half-decade has been straight-up garbage in comparison. since most djs wont even listen to a record if they dont like the track descriptions, we realize a lot is riding on the next paragraph. acid-electro bomb directions is a collaboration with wevie stonder, who call themselves an absurdist electronic music collective, which youd have to agree sounds like a lot of fun. meanwhile, keep breathin completely redefines the term pump-bumpin pumper, and features vocals from dance mania ghetto house legend dj deeon. twin turbo keeps puttin hot mp3s in your pocket, offering maximum value for your hard-won digital nickels. as far as we know, youve earned it.

the four-tracker features dense techno with individual moods. “revelation” is a downbeat lurching machine-giant with repeat climaxes. “concussion” is broken and feverish, with sculpted layers of pressure. the momentum of “locust” drives on the edge of an untravelled path and cannot rest. the final track “gravity” is subtle and snarling, with a slowly ascending melody, scraping against future and past.

khalab has arrived onthecorner with ‘zaire’. ‘zaire’ is the beginning of a new narrative for the artist. in this first chapter khalab creates urgent compositions with layers of sound from the past, present and future. ‘zaire’ is underpinned by an intensely pounding heart of other-worldly percussion. the collaged loops frenetically jab in syncopation breaking off when the inherent swing casts its discrete groove to summon the dance. unrelenting waves of synthlines, basslines and rhythm find harmony amongst the melodic chants and distortion.
