hard-hitting latin-tinged super-group grupo magnético formed from backgrounds in funk, hip-hop, punk and soul, united by a love of eddie palmieri, tito puente, ray barretto, fania and classic new york salsa. working with legendary musicians from cuba, venezuela and america (who had played and recorded with many of the names who d originally inspired the group), the circle was complete as the album was mixed in new york by grammy winning latin producer aaron levinson.
hot on the heels of the well received dirty channels vs danny russell watchin out/ frazelle today is the day (linkwood edit), we bring you more twelve inch heat. this time in the shape of an unreleased nugget from funk and soul legend, bobby boyd, the founding member and lead singer of bobby boyds congress - who metamorphosed into the lafayette afro rock band, after bobbys departure in 1971. on the a-side, producer and engineer extraordinaire bob blank - whos worked closely with the likes of arthur russell, taana gardner, sun ra, larry levan and kid creole - turns out a mix that hits the sweet spot between boogie and proto-house with a hint of latin freestyle. whilst the flip sees darting synths and swirling pads layered over a tight machine groove, as bobby reminds us of the simply joy that dancing can bring.
sometimes i just got to reissue a stone cold party joint because its not on 45 and i need it in your box, everyone wins. hopefully this teddy pendergrass does not need any introduction, i have been spinning the fat philly mix at parties for my whole life, on the flip we got the o.g lp version as well for those who know. thanks to warner for pulling the tapes.
bill browns super rare brownstone release is one for the deep heads, less well known than label mate everyday people but just as rare and collectable. shuffling sunshine soul its all about the groove and feeling. 500 copies only. one for the heads. bill brown and al hall jr met around 1971, they were both in south central l.a and shared the same apartment building, also in the same building was doug carn and brownstone singer billy wilson. these studio sessions were done at paramount studios hollywood where al hall jr was working for producer art smith a&c music. the main distributor for a&c was accent records.
this month we have what is the start of a string of previously unreleased bangers from the soul, funk and disco legend bobby boyd, we have been working on this for a long time and really proud to be working alongside bobby representing him. first up we have love goddess, a floaty driving disco soul number thats bound to get some spins by the northern boys as well as deep disco heads, i know its been doing this business when i play it, on the flip and classic horn driven funky soul in bobbys classic style and solid songwriting, essential. if your not a rare soul or disco collector bobby s name might not be a name your familiar with but as one of the founder members of lafayette afro rock band you will have experienced his music and influence which is far reaching.
second up on our bobby boyd unreleased recording we have some dope mid 80s material from bobby, “i like what you do to me” is boogie / proto house joint that is totally my bag, feels like it should be in a 80s movie weightlifting montage (in a good way) it just works on the dance floor so well.
on the flip things get even stronger with the proto-house banger “girl like you” a sick soulful number with with a biggest swinging kick drum i have ever heard, both proper club material.
if your not a rare soul or disco collector bobby’s name might not be a name your familiar with but as one of the founder members of lafayette afro rock band you will have experienced his music and influence which is far reaching.
one of the most coveted unreleased low rider / soul ballads. a huge tune, up there with darling dears (google that shit). only released on a japanese compilation 20 odd years ago without the bands consent (and with some of the channels missing) we bring you the full unreleased version for the first time. this is a big one for people who know the score.
if that’s not enough, we found this rather good unreleased disco gospel number on the master tapes of their private press lp sessions (also coming soon) but we had to give the ballad to the a side, roll the windows down and blast it.
this hampshire & foat project should not come as too much of a surprise to those familiar withgreg& warren s music, influenced heavily by not just jazz but the library sound of the 60s and 70s along with film soundtracks from the same golden era.greg& warren are avid collectors of this music, gregsends me links night and day to lps he has picked up digging on his travels. this constant search sends him down new musical pathways and often sparks a whole new concepts for projects. warren andgregare both fiercely creative talented individuals which means we have to keep them working, a challenge for us all, but the music rewards the effort many times over. we had talked for a long time about doing a library style lp (somethinggregis very passionate about) so during different recording sessionsgreg& warren started laying down various tracks with a view to the lp we have here. side one is 5 tracks in very distinct styles, musical paintings for the big screen. the vast sound of the japanese influenced jasmine, the spaghetti western melancholy of mariposa lily, the call to action that is antonio s theme, the breezy vintage sports car in the sun that coastal drivepaints, and lost in nostalgia, a late night poirotesk piece. side 2 is a classic library suite, whichgregdescribes as a detective s theme with different variations on the motifs.
first ever official reissue of ice s rare and in demand north carolina born soul funk jam reality via athens of the north records and magnetic recordings. super rare modern soul / boogie tune. first played by ian wright and a few others on the deepfunk scene and then picked up by the northern soul scene.
should not need any introduction to deep disco heads, huge spin for red greg, floating points, jeremy underground etc. love tempo is this years banger in january, well know to those deep in the game for some time but dog rare and good makes finding an o.g a fantasty, so here you go my pleasure.
more fire from aaron broomfields archive, here we have two sought after sides. im gonna miss ya was transferred from tapes by aaron himself and is a brilliant boogie joint thats highly coveted on many scenes for good reason. on the flip we have got the super rare and relatively unknown does anybody really know, one for the heads, no master exists for this but jeremy underground kindly lent me his minty copy to master from, jeremy is a man who possess extremely good taste in modern soul and disco and who we will be working with more in the future
luiz mendes jr or junior mendes was a ubiquitous figure in the brazilian soul / funk scene of the 70s and early 80s, contributing to compositions for bands such as banda black rio, tim maia, sandra de sa and many more. this, his only solo album has remained off the map (unless you re a collector of rare brazilian vinyl). despite his huge contribution to brazilian music the lp has remained unissued until now, 35 years after its recording.
a super rare disco / modern banger to end the year. star quake came out ofcolumbus, georgiaand that s about as far as they got. don t you know i love you is a relatively recent spin with o.g copies easily going for over $1000 and with good reason. a disco floater over some brilliant bass, i also edited the b side to remove the fade in so it can now be dropped easily in a club. happy new year.
does this need an explanation? my two favourite dj sides from stark reality catalog, for say brother i fixed the eq and made it a bit more club friendly also editing the crazy tripped out ending out which maybe controversial but always freaked the dance floor out so i cut that out to gain some extra volume and bass. on the flip we got bustin out of doors which has always been a favourite warm-up record again without the random ending. to make it extra cute i used the o.g hoagy carmichael’s music shop illustration. 500 only, no repress.
a rather fruity brazilian, french spoken erotic version f painel de controle single we put out a couple of years ago that sits somewhere between euro disco and the original track. always enjoyed playing this one out in the club as an answer record to the o.g so its good to have this one at 45rpm as well.
we have always loved pure essence so delighted to be able to revisit the lp track and 45 as a 7- with third rock (less rare but imho better track) on the a side from a brand new master done by myself. untouchable disco funk of the highest order, ltd to 500 as are all the now-again vault release, no repress.
vocalist and mult- instrumentalist family thebroomfield s might be new to you but deepfunk heads know the deal. the six broomfield siblings (vocalist, diane and her 5 brothers) released some of the best rare groove 12s and 45s in the 1980s (although this 45 was recorded in 1979) as well as recording with betty wright, kc and the sunshine band, timmy thomas, little beaver, julio iglesias, michael sterling and many, many more. championed by keb darge and others on the deepfunk scene in the early 2000s, this record has remained agonisingly elusive, despite being very popular as both sides are brilliant. so, with the help of symphonical records we got in touch with aaron and made this happen, look out for aaron s 45 dropping soon as well.
henry thomas low key 45 on raptown records has until now been a featured in the record boxes of deep boogie and two step dj s who know the deal, it s now time for it to spread its fm synth wings to bigger dancefloors. what more do you want, a solid two sider that only slipped through ebay a few times on the cheap as people did not know it, managed to bag one of those myself and with some help from a good friend track henry down, alive, well and looking forward to his music getting a revival.
i released zebra over 10 years ago on 12- year ago when at jazzman records but deicded to do it on the original format with a brand new master as its always been a favorite 70s dancefloor killer (huge on the deepfunk scene in the early 2000s) and i needs to fit in peoples 45 box. 500 only.
super rare (pretty much unknown) mid tempo vocal modern soul / disco floater with a great sweet soul flip. i have been looking for this one for a long while, its got that outsider soul lo-fi vibe that i love. remember and always check the flip, the ballad goes double time near the end and is one for the more sophisticated dance-floors
this disco funk banger was discovered reasonably late in the game on the deepfunk scene. vivian lee s big powerful vocal over the pushy backing is what its all about, straight to the point short and sweet dance floor killer. this sounds better than the o.g which was pretty rough.
the fruit band s fleeting existence was only recently revealed by the discovery of a few unsold copies of their sole 1978 single, say it, which quickly became a cult showpiece for savvy djs and collectors. athens of the north has since reached out to cypress studios of jacksonville, florida and discovered a complete album of the group s stylish, dancefloor-smashing funk and deep disco on tape, unreleased for over 30 years. here we present out two favorite unreleased tracks on 45 for the first time. 500 only no repress.
one of the best mid-tempo disco raritys (and we mean rare) to come out the deepfunk scene. when keb darge first played party & get on down in the early 2000s in soho it put a few noses out of joint as it was such a departure from the deepfunk driving take no prisoner sound. true to kebs scottish stubbornness and like any real dj he stuck to his guns and created a dance floor favourite. athens of the north bring bab to 12inch for the first time, not only that but its a nice wee extended cut transferred direct from the master tapes. no brainier if you got class.
our second and final release from billy bruner t spoon out of his obscure oil capital record label. if you dance tonight is almost unknown boogie spin your never gonna find, solid. on the flip say yea is an 80s sweet soul ballad years ahead of the pack, i have a soft spot for this one, damn good end of nighter if its been a good one. strictly 500 no repress.
the fruit bands fleeting existence was only recently revealed by the discovery of a few unsold copies of their sole 1978 single, say it, which quickly became a cult showpiece for savvy djs and collectors. athens of the north has since reached out to cypress studios of jacksonville, florida and discovered a complete album of the groups stylish, dancefloor-smashing funk and deep disco on tape, unreleased for over 30 years. vinyl is presented in a handmade cardboard tip-on sleeve as would have been used at the time as only the best will do.
cool creations of st maarten were formed in 1975 by carlyle barriteau, funk gumbs and winston macco. they were all in our last year of high school in st maarten. the name coolcreations was inspired by kool and the gang, one of their off island influences. the band mainly played hotels, local dance clubs and carnival parades and they recorded one lp. these two tracks were taken from that little know but much loved lp which was recorded in san juan in puerto rico (no one can remember t...
athens of the north presents two of the disco floaters from our previously unreleased aotnlp original friends and buddies, both of these versions are on 45 for the first time. the stripped down version of silence that you keep benefits from the more direct tight vocal. without the synths there is much more space in the mix which suits the melancholy deep disco groove so much better. on the flip po man has also been stripped right back to its more basic elements also for the better, less is so much more.
after the success of galaxies like grains of sand, warren and greg retreated back to the isle of wight to start work on long discussed concept album based on a fictional children s book the honey bear. each track a chapter of the book, hypnotic folk pieces mixed with ambient field recordings that warren and greg collected around the beaches, cliffs and gardens of the island. they brought everything together at home, organically forming this beautiful ambient folk tale during the island s idyllic summer evenings. after finishing the initial mixes on the island they brought the tapes up to scotland and overdubbed with strings, oboe and flute. whether your 5 or 50, the charm and beauty of the honeybear is undeniable, children fairytale book concept album limited edition pressing
another tape extracted from the sony vault for the first time since the records was released in 1980. a floaty disco masterpiece that has been on the soul scene for time but deserves a broader appreciation. we present this in the much rarer issue format with the excellent ballad on the flip -blame it on me-, most o.g copies are missing this track. how the band never made it past one single i don t know as both tracks are fire.
two unreleased recordings dug up by the team at numero group for their purple snow comp (get it), these were begging to be put on 45. recorded at audiotek studios inc in 1975. david z, who engineered lipps inc s -funkytown- and several prince productions, piloted both these recordings. get it on is the perfect end up night stone groove track, i can t recommend this record enough, buy it. another completely selfish venture, i just wanted this on 45.
you probably don t know this disco banger, i think there is about 4 or 5 known copies on 7inch, everyone who has a copy has been keeping it quiet. i first heard it from david haffner about 4 years ago and had been after it since then. after a lot of research i came to the conclusion the everyone involved had passed away, but months after giving up after i spotted benitas full name on another related lp credited as a backing singer. i was then able to track down benita who was alive, well and surprised and very happy to hear from me. this one is a beast and will fly out (i find myself saying this far to often).
chicano soul floaters have to be one of the smaller sub genres of my disco collecting but nubia is probably the best example out there. we managed to get the master tapes from writer george rivera so it sounds as good as the day it was recording, bring some floaty sunny soul to your dancefloors â€,“, 500 only.
athens of the north and symphoncal records are proud to present the long lost raw soul express lp in a special limited vinyl only release. mastered personally from the original tapes with love. if you dont know what this is then you re in the wrong game, the lp also includes the full previously unreleased version of their rare-groove and surprisingly rare club classic the way we live in its full intended format. solid ballads are what makes the lp for me but there is not a bad track on there, boogie, funk and rare-groove, blink and it ll be gone.
multi talented uk jazz pianist greg foat has teamed up with mercury award nominated the bees member and multi instrumentalist warren hampshire to collaborate on a new lp drawing on their diverse musical influences. classic british library music, 60s italian soundtracks & lost americana combined with touches of modern classical, minimalism, jazz and folk. featuring many members of greg and warren s previous bands and one of the u.ks finest jazz drummers, clark tracy, the lp also features an edinburgh orchestra and soloists hand picked and scored by the boys. recorded all analogue onto 2-multitrack in edinburgh, mixed down by mattias glava at his studio in gothenburg, sweden then mastered and cut in helsinki, finland, it s truly a european affair flying in the face of the brexit nightmare. release june 2017
gospel disco time again!!!! after the sucess of -the power of you re love- we deceded to pull out a couple more of our gospel disco dancefloor favorites. elbernita -twinkie- clark-terrell ( who was in the the clark sisters before going solo) recorded this beast for the lp ye shall receive power in 1980-81 for armen boladian s sound of gospel records out of detroit (a sub of the mighty westbound records). both tracks featured on the lp only so desperatly need some 45 action. i m not going to try and sell you this one with tales of its history all you need to do is drop the needle (or press the little play icon)..... straight up monster dancefloor destructor.
huge, the full unreleased version of the o.g bboy classic brazilian rhyme straight out the sony tape vaults ( i made that sound easier than it was). not just one for hip-hop heads, the appreciation of this groove is pretty much universal. the track is an uncredited cover of toninho horta s -beijo partido- most likely directly influenced by milton nascimentos version from the lp minas which is a great cheap lp while we are on that. on the flip for the first time on 45 (until someone tells me there is some random german or thai pressing) is one of my old modern spins, best 45 of the year and its only march.
huge support from jeremy underground / floating points / motor city drum ensemble. huge record if youre into disco, modern or just good fucking music and you probably dont own unless you work in the city or spend half you life looking for it. frazelle is the party record that everyone wants, big support all round on this so dont be waiting around and then email us when they are gone. licensed from ken frazzelle himself which always makes us happy. expect bileo like sales on this so stock up as they will fly
two previously unreleased tracks from the outsider disco outfit - strange.
christopher spraggins & the strange band out of rochester, n.y released a total of one record. a spaced out druggy disco band that had a hint of rick james with a deeper trippier vibe that’s truly unique, reproduced for you here for the first time since 1978. the band was introduced to the world by cleveland unlimited records who still exist to this day, unfortunately as these things go, the record failed to gain sales needed to justify further but a whole lp was recorded, here we bring you the best tracks from that unreleased lp on your favourite format.
two massive unreleased 12″,,, inch disco bangers from the obscure florida band fruit, cut loud and deep like a true disco 12 should be. the fruit band’s fleeting existence was only recently revealed by the discovery of a few unsold copies of their sole 1978 7″,,, single, say it, which quickly became a cult showpiece for savvy djs and collectors.
gospel is not something we often delve into at aotn, i like the odd track but to make the grade it has to be really good. i used to play he s alright (the b-side of this 45) from the lp back in the day when you could pick it up for $10. at that point nobody cared or was looking for gospel disco (especially on lp) but times and tastes catch up with us out there on the front line ,) so when i heard floating points play the power of your love at the plastic people closing party i was surprised as i had all but forgotten about the lp (credit where credit is due). i jumped into action, hit up calvin bridges who wrote and recorded the lp (and is still recording gospel to this day) and he was happy to help out, so here we have it, a now historic track flipped with my preferred b side and old secret weapon, this will fly.
athens of the north had a few of these lying around after pressing the henry stone lp so as its a quiet month i thought we would share the remaining copies of this holy grail, be quick, not many and no repress. 200 copies.
stone cold classic, although pastime paradise has been reissued a couple of time on compilations every single reissue has used the rocky lp version which is not nearly as good as the original 7inch cut. as we at athens of the north like to do things right we went back to the sony tape vault and had the 7- version transferred for the first time since the o.g 45 was cut. this 45 sounds fantastic, much stronger then the o.g 45 cut so its a no brainer. on the flip we took one of our favourite track from the lp and introduced it to 7inch for the first time, mambotango is a dreamy sountracky latin disco number i used to spin on warm up duty, very new york.
i’ll be honest, i had forgotten about samuel jonathan johnson until i heard theo parrish play it recently. i used to spin the lp years ago but my copy got lost or beat. soon as i heard it i made a call and sorted out the 45, just an amazing solid groove on sweet love, you cant help but feel it. the flip reasons, is the other great track from the same columbia lp my music. first time on 45 for both of these, once they are gone that is it. disco essential!
did somebody say aotn 12inch. for our first large format singe we bring you the unreleased full length version of the original symbol 8 classic i thought you wanted to dance. the track was featured on american band stand in the late 70s but failed to make it for the usual reasons (luck, management and distribution) but that is no marker of quality, these tracks are disco and modern soul royalty. charlie adams versatile vocal flipping into falsetto with ease while the band holds the solid groove is a special thing. on the flip-side is later and very different version of i thought you wanted to dance plus a personal favourite and long time spin of my own call me. essential as always.
its a big one, a third previously unreleased raspuitins stash lp, half of which was thought to be lost. just recently it turned up in a chicago warehouse and we managed to get out hands on it. with the blessing of paul coleman (rasputins stash member) we reunited the masters with the remainder of the tapes residing in curtom archive to complete the lp, huge!
crunchy outsider disco thats always been popular with those in the know. getting strong spins through the various iterations of the euro soul scene and strong support from djs like giles peterson & floating points. these are not going to hang about long. lo-fi disco at its finest.
two gold standard musical compositions i wont insult by labelling with a genre. *truth is the key* is one of my favourite tracks period, the arp solo just does it for me in every way. the vocal will be familiar as irene datcher also sang on the james mason lp (who also features on these tracks). *dreamflower* should need no introduction, famously sampled by erykah badus *didnt cha know* and many others. this is a sublime landscape is notable for ryo kawasakis dreamy guitar work, stone cold classic. both sides surprisingly have never graced the 7 inch format until now, absolutely essential 45.
first time i heard this track out was d.jing with adrian gibson, booker/manager for the london jazz cafe in its hay day in the early 2000s, i thought it was some crazy obscusre early jacksons 45. i had no idea what it was but i liked it and it stuck with me. as my eyes were on 45 s at the time it passed me by until numero group reissued it on their fabulous soul messengers compilation (essential purchase if you don t own). after quite a bit of badgering rob sevier, co-owner of numero group, let this grace my format of choice, so here we are, both sides first outing as a single.
rarest of the rare and holy grail are terms often thrown around all too easily. in this case both apply, incredibly rare and sought after as well as being a quality piece of music on both sides, you won t get higher up the disco food chain than this. a few weeks ago we brought you 2 unreleased track from the same band but these 2 might as well be unless you have $4000 sitting around for an o.g copy, if you can find one. strictly limited and no repress on this as per o...
mgrown syndrome is a strong 2 sided major label banger that has been heavily in demand (therefor expensive) for the last 8 or so years. a banging disco funk a side flipped with a deep quality 70s soul stepper, it s a no brainer. tip for o.g heads: go for the canadian press as they are vinyl and have the dope flip. fryer homegrown syndrome actually derived from the group home grown funk...which originated from memphis, tennessee. we moved to los angeles, ca in 197...
two unreleased disco funk bangers from joe tex backing band the second re$$urrection. dug out from sonny cravers stanson records archive, the band did release one ultra rare disco/modern 45 which goes for $3000+ all day long also coming to athens of the north next
two essential slices of top notch 70s soul from classic lp ‘hutson ii’ two essential sides from one of my favourite 70s vocalists, leroy hutson. his album hutson ii has never been out my dj bag in 20 years, im on my third copy. for the a side
two slices of brilliant brazilian disco, painel de controle have a few bangers across their rca lps, these two being my favourites. *relax* is a straight up boogie monster, well known to deep disco & boogie heads flipped with *malandrinh* with its insanely catchy guitar. the original brazilian *relax* 7 inch plays at 33rpm (like many brazilian 45s), if you know you are cutting you will know this is not ideal. our new 7 inch is 45rpm and cut from a super crisp new master from the tapes at timmon cutting labs, sounds about 5x better than the o.g. ... simple choice.
this month athens of the north presents two 45 s from a true musical genius, weldon irvine. here we have 2 classic sides taken from the 1976 lp sinbad on rca. the vocals don blackman are certainly the equal of marvin gayes whats going on for conscious soul perfection, i don t think i can give it higher praise than that. this is in my top 5 records of all time dont think, buy it.
athens of the north is proud to present milton wrights stunning alternate version of the now classic miami soul lp *friends & buddies*. an altogether more stripped down, folky soul affair than its highly respected, much sampled brother is now available on vinyl, cd and digital for the very first time. shelved at the last minute then re-recorded and overdubbed, only a few promo copies of this early version escaped from the studio and are deep in the collections of the very few previously in the know. the master tapes burnt in a fire at t.k disco in miami in the early 80s so even the label has not heard this in 30 years. many reissues of the second version of friends & buddies lp have come and gone, but miltons original vision has remained hidden until now. as searingly honest and stunningly soulful as any seminal marvin gaye or terry callier lp, it stands tall amongst its exceptional peers as one of the true pillars of quality 70s soul.
two sides from our favorite early 80s lover lew kirton. its the first time the sexy soul mans two track have been 45! both solid tried and tested lp tracks, but who wants to spin lps. 15 years of doing a club every week and you end up with some secret weapons, *something special* was always a big tempo change record. everyone is tired from dancing for two hours to fast disco, modern and deepfunk and without warning you just drop this badboy in take it down a notch and let the dry riding commence, solid. on the flip is lews straight up jack of gloria gaynors *i will survive*, pure shameless anthemic dancefloor disco smasher that i have championed for years, that catchy guitar line over lews big voice never tires.
in about 2003 i did some work for deepfunk and northern soul legend keb darge and as was the way back then i received payment in vinyl. included in the pile was this little detroit number which i instantly fell in love with. in 1980 david mcmurray and adell shavers and david mcmurray (who went on to be a member of 80s hit band was not was) wrote and produced this amazing detroit modern / boogie 45 which for some reason suffered the same fate of many of aotn releases and disappeared from history. but thanks to the generation of collectors before me this gem sat safely in northern collection such as kebs for years waiting for its day in the sun. it only got limited play but recently the record has had a resurgence in popularity and value which it deserves. after a tip off from jason stirland (soulstax records) i found david mcmurray and it was wonderful to find he was keen to help me bring this wonderful 45 back into the limelight. so here we are…
top tier hawaiian disco boogie masterpiece available for the first time on 45. it took us 3 years to persuade nohelani cypriano to let us do *lihue* , a brilliant fairly obscure disco boogie track but if you are a fan and you keep trying your enthusiasm for the music pays off. not only are we are just delighted to present *lihue* on 7 for the first time (previously lp only) but to top it off the flip is a track from a very rare hawaiian 45 also by nohelani called *playing with fire*, which sounds like a party track straight out your favorite 80s film. i rate it, which means it is good! its like rare-groove scene all over again but with new records.
one of the rarest, most shit kicking deepfunk 45s never to have been in your box, but that is about to change. you will never find an original of this record, it has never been on ebay, i have not heard of a copy changing hands in the last 14 years. the last and possibly only copy was in 2000, it came from gabe roth of daptone records fame, through jeff silvermans (truth and soul records) and finally to monster u.k collector ian wright who has kept it tucked away ever since. i called ian wright and he informed me that in the 14 he owned it it had not occurred to him to check the flipside which turns out is pretty bad ass sisterfunk cover of sam and daves *hold on, i m comin*. as for monica, nothing is known about her, i suspect due to the sexy word play the record may have been sold at gigs rather then distributed but can only guess. more sisterfunk coming soon!
