we re not sure who s behind the mysterious ac-exp project. but the shadowy figure returns with more of that strange. submerged house music he s been tickling discerning djs with over the past few years. after taking last year off. 1a is a fine place to start things up again with a strutting jack track carrying acidic synth pulses that flirt with measured delay processing. its a jam that sounds steamy and sinister all at once. 1b maintains this restrained but seductive vibe with the slightly trancey throb of the lead synths pivoting around the snappy drums to great effect.
whoever is behind the ac exp project has clearly worked very hard to ensure their identity remains under wraps. with zilch info out there on the big old internet. which is a shame because theres a degree of class to the two untitled productions on this 10- that demands some recognition. both are unassuming club tools that any deep house selector will appreciate a few hours into their set. all swirling. dubby atmospherics. tunnelling rhythms and snapping percussion.
for the first in a series of reinterpretations of material from linkwood s superb expressions album. firecracker recordings has turned to chicago deep house veterans ghosts of the sky (aka perpetual rhythms chicagodeep and taelue). and fast-rising machine abusers nummer. the latter dive into an aquatic techno tip. turning the becalmed and melancholic love lost into a techno-tempo stroll through vintage carl craig chords. sweaty machine percussion. and yearning melodies. theres a warmer and heavier. if surprisingly stripped back. feel to ghosts of the sky s version of object. with spluttering electronics and sumptuous chords stretching out over a rich synth bassline and hissing. cymbal-heavy groove.
when commissioning remixes. the best labels think outside the box. that s exactly what firecracker s lindsay todd did when seeking out producers to rework tracks from linkwood s excellent expressions album. on this second 12- in an ongoing series. that faith has paid dividends. whereas the original version of ignorance is bliss was a warm. woozy. sun-kissed deep house affair. healing force project has reinvented it as a stargazing chunk of 21st century space jazz. complete with twinkling chords. low-slung double bass and reverb-laden drum solos. the musephased interpretation of love lost by kimochi label head area sticks closer to the ultra-deep. melancholic vibe of linkwood s original. but adds a frisson of excitement via bubbling. detroit-influenced electronics and hypnotic rhythms.

4 years can feel like a really long time – -long time no see- was achim maerz frst wake up! ep back in 2013. -it s been a while- is his frst track on metal and machines and it s good to see that some things don t change. it s a true achim maerz track – focused on longing melodies. warmly distorted harmonies based on deep house foundations. -listening to machines- features a kickdrum like a steam hammer in factory hall. for the right mind. even a factory can be an inspiring place. benjamin brunn s -iron copper gold- follows his manner of creating timeless and eternal soundscapes. it is less playful and takes the tension to higher grounds. just like metal. it s cold being touched and it doesn t take long until it reaches body temperature. the fourth track express mode- was released on benjamin brunns drop lp in 2015. achim maerz remix sounds like a screwed-down uptempo house track – slow and heavy. but benjamin brunn s quirkiness is undeniably there.
