seasoned memory athletes will no doubt recall the turbo’s past affiliation with the former soviet union (proxy, tiga tigayevich khristorozhdestvensky), and recent geopolitical developments have prompted the label to once again hedge its bets. our a&r team spent countless hours sifting through layer after layer of russian underground music, a shocking amount of which turned out to be fake soundcloud accounts from producers based in florida. in fact, our best intelligence suggests that dimitri veimar may be the only person making music in russia today. for the 30 minutes a day he is not trading in politically moderate twitter-bot futures, veimar produces dark, raw-dog electro. he has already released music with omnidisc and renate, so it makes little sense to us why we have to communicate with him via a mole in the canadian embassy in moscow, which is further complicated by the fact that the mole is also an aspiring dj/producer whom we have to keep happy at all costs. you have no idea how much has been sacrificed in order to shield you from the realpolitik of international dance music.

the legendary moscow club propaganda celebrates its 20th anniversary in april 2017 and launches a brand new record label. the label will cover different styles of intelligent electronic music, focusing on techno in the first year. at the beginning there will be released music by great artists who had performances at propaganda club in the past. more artists will be involved and more excellent music will be released over time.

any disco dj worth their weight in vinyl knows the name donnell pitman, and until now this has been mostly due to his highly sought after work of the late 70s and early 80s. renewed interest in donnell has reached critical peak over the past few years, fueled by red greg’s feature of donnell’s seminal “love explosion” on joey negro’s under the influence vinyl compilation series and chicago’s numero group putting out long forgotten, unreleased boogie bangers “burning up” and “taste of honey” in 2015.
it was this refreshed enthusiasm that caught the attention of producer kumar mcmillian of chicago-based disco ensemble wings of sunshine. kumar’s group was looking for another vocal collaborator following their 7” debut release on star creature records. a casual introduction led to an informal studio session between the two culminating in a modern disco masterpiece.

british producer richard smith creates genre-bending techno that incorporates motifs from the past while presenting the tunes in a de nite forward advancing trajectory. by integrating in uences from 90s electronic music and classics such as daf and severed heads, l/f/d/m presents 4 cuts that are sure to pique the interest of fans of modern techno who have an appreciation for idm, classic detroit techno and are searching for something to diversify their repertoire.

the fourth hotflush release of 2017 comes from minneapolis-based dj and producer, tml. he made his debut in 2014 with one inch of water, an album in cassette form via always human tapes. his style takes cues from the bass and jungle halcyon days of yore, yet in his hands these influences are pestled into anything but nostalgia. no memory looks forward to a place where pigeonholes don’t exist, where past, present and future boil an amalgamated stew, where ‘experimental’ and ‘clubby’ aren’t effective antonyms. it’s an album in miniature - six tracks spanning a broad range. the unmistakable taste of jungle pervades side a, becoming increasingly less abstract as it goes: from the fractured opening of ‘face pads’, through the dub of ‘cold sleep’, to the sunrise head bang that is ‘crying’. side two moves inside. it’s darker there. the tunes - ’strainer’, ‘rhu’ and ‘code library’ - share a paredbackness. their beats look askance as they shuffle big and bold.

first opus of a two acts project dedicated to my daughters, the ep opens with romane a very personal track which samples were taken from important moments of my life. the ep continues with my old mind and its jazzy touch, tinged with nostalgia of a not too far rave past…like an echo comes stocker an introspective track with breakbeat rhythms.the ep closes the curtain on this intimate fresco with poetry of oblivion, a tribute to electronica.

history freely dilates and collapses on valgeir sigurðsson’s dissonance, his first solo release since 2012. its three large-scale works are haunted by the old western tradition, infused with the ethereal workings of electronics and sound manipulation.
dissonance treads elegantly along a fine line between traditional symphonic organicism and the fissures of the faltering structures of reality. it takes forward sigurðsson’s typically expansive, panoramic writing, and elevates it to a perpetual construction and deconstruction of time and space.
these are hardly his first experiments with the archaic technology of classical instruments, but here the distance between past and present is precisely what the music itself is designed to explore, and to distort.

in order to get lines of perspective moving, aufgang transcend their instrumentarium. from this organic corpus, they manage to extract a hand-stitched, deeply human kind of music. this exhilarating craft builds bridges between disciplines, skilfully pulling together acoustics and electronics while making bold connections between different eras. ancestral pianos are groovier than any sequencer, the synths they use are antediluvian and the drums are constantly oscillating between metal and skin. they may well be the first truly accomplished and unabashed explorers of the channel connecting various approaches which, so far, had at best only been piled up. aufgang transcend the confines of time to bring the past back into the future.

new lands, released in 1997, was album proper no 3, described by pearce as “phase two” of the fsa project. it found pearce operating alone and finally realising the guitar sound that had been in his head all along. “something like ar kane’s god-like up home!,” he revealed in an interview at the time. it was a stark and often challenging listen (pearce stated in one interview that it was originally going to be called fuck you!), yet utterly beguiling.

rohey have toured extensively throughout scandinavia, taking in just about every major jazz festival along the way. with the release of “a million things” on jazzland recordings in early 2017, their path can be expected to take them ever further: music this good can t be kept secret for long. “a million things” performs a balancing act that most pop artists have forgotten in these days of studio micro-editing: how to write and play a song with full and sincere conviction, while enjoying an artful expressiveness without making things unnecessarily difficult for the audience. this has been borne out by their nomination for best single at the scandinavian soul awards in 2015.
