colin potter is a sound engineer and musician currently based in london. he has worked within the fields of electronic and experimental music for over 35 years, collaborating with the likes of current 93, the hafler trio, organum, andrew chalk, and most notably as a key part of nurse with wound alongside steven stapleton. he started the esteemed icr (integrated circuit recordings) label in 1981 releasing a clutch of wonderful home recordings of his own, over half a dozen small run cassette only releases. �the where house?� was recorded in 1981 at ic studio, a converted wash house in sutton on the forest in north yorkshire. the album was self-released on cassette that same year via icr. this expanded double lp edition features all 13 tracks from the original tape on vinyl for the first time plus 4 bonus tracks. �the where house?� is a prime example of early uk post-punk/industrial electronic music. �combining dub, electro, and krautrock rhythms with psychedelic, kosmische noise in multiple mutations ranging from almost pop-wise songcraft to horizon-scanning motorik flights,� says boomkat. most of the damage was done by colin using guitars, synths, sequencers, drum machines, percussion, and modified toy keyboards with fairly primitive 4-track recording equipment. he was assisted on some of the tracks by stephan jadd-parry (guitar, percussions), jon caffery (guitar, bass, e-bow, percussion) and nick jackson (synth). all songs have been remastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the record is sleeved in a replica of the original cassette artwork by jonathan coleclough. every copy includes a double sided postcard insert with notes from colin.

matt edwards newly launched reissue label, r-time records, prepares its third release, the second instalment of sir lord comixx retroactive. r-time records shines a light on classic tracks that didnt always get the recognition they deserve, with the labels first two releases coming from sir lord comixx and fbk. real name amoon andrews, sir lord commix�s discography has been in high demand for many years, evident by soaring market prices. the a-side of retroactive (part two) features two tracks from a rare untitled release on hard up, whilst the b-side is made up of chicago jazz from the funk box ep on eukahouse (under his a.moon moniker in 98) and motionvibe from azid jazz ep on cynic in 05. cosmic synths join wonky arps in ur my omen before moving into the more up-tempo fog horn with its robust drums, off-beat bleeps and filtered effects. chicago jazz takes things into deeper territories with crystalline rhodes and jazz-influenced samples until motionvibe concludes the package with its syncopated structure comprised of twisted sounds, murky atmospherics and effervescent nuances.

propelled by pure state aesthetics, spatial theoretics and a fondness of ferns, neoprene (amongst several other musical monikers and permutations) has been crafting and perfecting outer-world electronics since 2011 through their highly slept-upon digital and cassette label ashtar communications. �possibility spaces� is their debut 12�, a collection of cherry picked tracks created in chicago during their barista residency of 2015 - heavy points of dark matter gliding across a delicate, semi-permeable surface of unidentified experience. where others simply trawl the tropes of a rave culture gone by, neoprene bends into the best assets of house, hardcore and breaks and pulls up through a dense fog of floral new age ambience, creating a one-of-a-kind approach to expository techno.

the ep opens up with -plastic motion,- a techno track that is full of layers of subsonic pulsations, monolithically consuming the entire a-side. the sounds of the sirens are balanced against heavily stylized basslines moving in and out of the framework while bursts of white noise appear through the fog, creating a telekinetic hallucination. the b-side starts with the title track -confess.- a ruthless song that crushes together bass-heavy broken beat rhythms with straight-ahead kicks and snares. it s about to burst out of its seams any minute as psychedelic synths and buried vocals command it all to stay together.

les adventures de president bongo is a unique work that will reveal itself over the next seven years, give or take, in the form of 24 lp s. what is a groove? it is something that goes on and on, not changing much seemingly, like the growth rings exposed when you cut and fell a tree. it is no coincidence that tree rings resemble the spiral track of a record: they re both grooves of a sort.

a groove is a routine, a life lived. it may not always seem like much � a cup of bitter coffee, another day spent under the flickering fluorescent lights of an office, an overly long queue at the check-out of a suffocating supermarket. but it is also the scent of slightly burnt meat and birch by a gently flowing stream under a pink sunset, a silver fog clearing without notice to expose a starry sky and its familiar twinkling constellations, an impenetrable smile on a crowded morning train. it is the pattern exposed on the tree stump. a proper groove has ups and downs, it has drama. a good groove is a good story, a transmission into the future.

sudd records make the leap to vinyl with the help of detroit champ gari romalis. abstraxx (linear mix) kicks off the record in a heady fog of undulating pads, the smoke positively drifting out of the speaker cones over a simple, deep-as-you-like drum pattern. dark ryda (sunset mix) gets a little more funk in its rhythm, but the same mellow mood prevails, almost reaching dub techno levels in its atmospheric chord swells. heat (bout that life mix) takes things out of the darkness and into a lighter frame of mind, but romalis is still firmly in the deep end of the deep house pool with this final cut on the record.

the ebm-indebted techno funk of james welshs thread reemerges from the industrial fog, evolved into two outstanding remixes by a trio of established, emerging and somewhat unexpected artists. ozel ab delivers his debut remix, reimagining thread to encompass a widescreen vision of depth and drama. unfolding slowly and ethereally, with military kicks holding down a seemingly weightless, extended breakdown, his taste in dreamlike rave euphoria contains the same magic touch as it has done on previous, acclaimed releases for workshop and lobster theremin. on his garten remix, radio slave takes a percussive approach to the relatively raw electronics of the original track, adding a deceptively simple but immediately effective layer of drums to the production, before unleashing a more filtered and fucked-up interpretation of the riff to winning effect.

having tamed last year s havoc and disparity into the damaged rapture of layers of reality, anthony linell is opening a new calendar with the sheared isolation of his latest album, a sense of order. linell has put his toolkit for summoning euphoria aside here, instead sculpting a glowing, diaphanous fog that swells into pensive melodies and arpeggiated whispers. graceful for the way in which it makes the bleak hospitable, the charm of coldness invites us toward the empty and the beautiful, and away from the miserable.

villa Åbo in the alternative solo project of swedish musician and producer jan svensson, who has been making electronic music for the better part of 30 years as the artist behind such aliases as frak, studio ss and alvars orkestra. svensson also runs legendary swedish dance and experimental music label börft, the product of a mutual appreciation for severed heads and terse tapes. as villa Åbo he released two records in 1997 on börft and remained inactive for 17 years until the dutch label bio rhythm coaxed him into revisiting the project and released a double 12&#8243,, in 2014. jan has since followed with a steady stream of 12� singles for kontra-musik, noise in my head and radio lundberg.
�magnetic moves� is villa Åbo�s debut album, originally released in an limited edition of 65 hand-numbered cassettes by funeral fog in 2016.

daniel avery returns to phantasy for a 4-track limited edition 12inch vinyl ep, slow fade, featuring the title track and first single from his much-anticipated sophomore lp, upcoming in april via phantasy. a prelude to the lps sonic exploration of the twilight world of a personal, transient life spent between clubs, hotel rooms, airports and home, slow fade captures the expanded foundations of averys sonic palette. arresting club moments linger under the surface, but the focus is on the smudged ambience that underpin averys grasp on rave euphoria. as a re-entry into a broader musical universe, slow fade is immediately compelling, combining neo-acid, feedback loops and pure atmosphere at a patient but restrained pace. meanwhile, after dark alters this aesthetic to its raw, pensive elements, stripping avery�s distinctive drums completely, revealing a meditative, ambient fog. radius announces itself with industrial intent, before unfolding seamlessly into a wistful electronic hymn, the perfect soundtrack to brooding london skies, and eventually evolving into slow-motion motorik. closing the ep, fever dream finds avery at club tempo, but in a somewhat agitated state, on this occasion focusing on a paranoid rhythm that emerges clean from eerie, even paranoid territory. close your eyes, press repeat.

the jam starts with -orange sunshine- (doesn t it always?) of course as usual it takes a while to kick in and by the time it does it s obvious helltown acid militia are back with their time warping spaceship. by the second track -still turning- the fog clears a little, but there are still echoes of a time past, what is it? can t quite put my finger on it... on the flip we are met with chunky 909 rhythms in -more important-, because what s more important than a 909 rhythm track? for the final outing -broadcast- (which may be the real hidden gem here) the tempo drops and there s chord stabs, strings and talk of ufos. its at this point that you realise that the label on the record has a picture of mitzi the cat, in a space suit, holding a white 303!! this acid really is a trip.

knlb first appeared with the initialize 12inch on vibraphone in july of this year, and it s not taken them long to return with another slab of on-point, upfront house music loaded with flair and imagination. up again is a heavy, chugging and bumping jam that should inspire all manner of screwed up faces of appreciation on the floor, and then fog machine smell simmers things down to a more measured house groove. half life brings a few more dubby elements into the mix, and then the club mix of sin sends the record spinning off in a wonderfully dusty reverie of detuned pianos and late-hitting drums.

if you are wondering what the artist wanted to tell you by choosing this title, we will give you a small hint: it�s a cynical statement on something that for sure every party promoter has experienced at some point. the rest, we will leave up to your imagination� in real life, there�s no mercy � neither is when it comes to the sound of this new snork release by syntax error. the four new tracks with meaningful names are not only a social criticism and another artistic processing of the current development of the techno scene, but also a classic syntax error: rough, tricky and good to groove. each track stands on its own, telling another story. �collateral cosmopolitan� is a straight forward piece with a highly memorable beat talking about the uniformity that is creeping in the waiting lines of more and more techno clubs. �i wear my grandpa�s glasses� presents a totally dodgy sound, which might be a little oldschool and even a little irritating � just like some fashion items you encounter on today�s big city streets. �no fog is no solution� is a tight song that definitely needs some good fog and a harsh strobe. and finally, the last track sounds like a futuristic fairy tale from outer space looking on the world as if it is a �society bathysphere�.

alter is the new album from belgium-based double bass player and electronic producer otto lindholm. divided into four colour-inspired, long-form movements, alter takes off from lindholms previous work a self-titled album released in 2015 on icarus records, and pushes the already abundant palette of sounds even further. this new work is more brooding and hypnotic. a deep, resonating bass is present - hinting at the likes of greek, chamber-doom merchants mohammad but perhaps with more attention placed upon textures and melody. the record moves at a funereal pace and opener fauve hits abyssal depths from the outset. a bowed melody is coaxed through the throbbing bass with dissonant harmonics drawing you in and holding you close. the ghostly beginnings of alyscamps create an overwhelmingly tense atmosphere where acoustic and electronic elements collide and evolve into a heaving, ceremonious drone. shafts of light emerge through the fog but the tone remains a haunted one. closer, heliotrope, strikes a more hopeful note. a lighter, more open feel emerges - bringing to mind early work of the rachels or perhaps deaf center.

producer and dj from cantabria pablo bolívar signs the new release in his very own seven villas, in which he takes the chance to interpret --remixwise-- the tracks on the album traverse -by sensual physics which was originally released in 7v in 2016.

following releases on detroit underground, nachtstrom schallplatten, planet rhythm and blueprint records, gotshell releases his first ep on atrophic society. the colombian aficionado has been making waves across the world for his uncompromising take on the darker side of techno. his new ep �quarkcima� is no different, with a thick slice of bass-heavy machine music made for late night body moving. �quarkcima� follows a bleepy lead with layers of bass, building to a satisfying and tasteful crescendo, which steers clear of the tropes and uses frequencies to their fullest. it invokes a dark and foreboding atmosphere like a creeping black fog. first on remix duty is xhin, who takes the bleepy synth lead and twists it into a heavy-but-funky robotic jam, stark and cold on the surface but with plenty of heat underneath. jeff derringer takes the reins for the second remix, wielding the original parts masterfully into a dense, bassline-driven triplet groove that takes the vibe up a few notches. finally, label head vohkinne adds punch and percussion to his charged and clanging remix, which rounds out a fierce package in style. �quarkcima� is four cuts of essential techno that will never leave your crate.

the first release on youth - a new label from andrew lyster, comes from portland based artist yard. hailing from the dark woods of the west coast of the united states, yard brings together a collection of tracks from the archives alongside some new material. canopy and white fog were originally released on the album deciduous flood plains, and have been reworked for this release. marshall acid is pressed to vinyl for the first time having previously only been available digitally via event horizon. yard�s gritty sound evokes a spectrum of gnarled city life to organic atmospheres. the release comprises of field recordings, micro-cassette mangles, bass kicks, a live jam between x0xb0x and a modded tr-606 and water drops percolating through the mixes to get that urban hum and grit running up against the forest.

a few years ago we received an anonymous email with a link to three tracks and a simple message: �hi, maybe you would be interested in this music.� it�s easy to be skeptical of yet another link from yet another artist in a world overcrowded with them, but listening is our job and so we do it. the songs were instantly striking: extraordinarily slow, somber, and spacious, each vaulted cathedral chord reverberating poetically into the distance, the melodies rolling out like fog across a cemetery. captivated, we requested more, receiving a single word in response: �yes.� then, nothing. eventually, three months later, we received another email with slightly more information: a name (irma orm), a location (stockholm), and a bit of context (she worked alone, and progress on music was slow but steady).
fast-forward to mid-2016: we�re informed the album is complete, and it is breathtaking. hermetic gothic swan songs conjured from funereal piano, twilit ambience, minimalist percussion, and spellbinding vocals. the mood is lulling and lush but lost in sorrow, stark grey structures looming in the night. majestic open spaces between notes heighten the melancholic grandeur of orm�s arrangements, blurring the line between lament and lullaby. the songs less end than ebb away, succumbing to their own downcast beauty.
