uncage founder marco faraone debuts on rekids, dropping four techno cuts on the label’s special projects series this march. the italian producer has had a busy few years touring north america, south america and europe, not to mention dropping releases on labels like ovum and tenax recordings. meanwhile his uncage imprint, which he runs alongside norman methner, has quickly cemented a reputation for quality house and techno, releasing music from artists like eduardo de la calle, pablo mateo and fabio della torre (under his corcos moniker). with its rolling percussion and a heady spoken word sample, find the song introduces a quintessential rekids record. thunderous kick drums and piercing stabs then form the high-octane arcane before the dark and ominous justice demonstrates industrial elements and floating atmospherics. tying it all together, tantalizing melodies join echoing effects for the final track titled layers.

on the a side bftt and lack follow on from their debut release on the fifth cong burn tape. bftt crafts a peak time sub heavy techno weapon which beautifully collapses in on itself before its final ascent. lack layers polyrhthmic splashes of shackleton-esque percussion over dubbed out bass growls. flip it over and you ve got chekov following up his ace debut on shanti celeste s peach discs with electro 808 patterns and swells of low end weight. howes lowers the tempo with a low key bubbler that further explores the textures laid out on cong burn s first 12inch.

long time friend of the label, neue grafik, steps forth with his most fully realised offering to date. this record has been a long time coming, born out of a encounter in paris back in 2016. this meeting of minds led to a blossoming friendship between fred ( neue grafik) and bradley ( rs intl) which has taken them across 3 continents, countless dance-floors and finally crystallised onto this 12-. the record itself takes cues from the broken-beat sound of london while paying homage to the parisian house dance scene. largely sample based, but also employing much more live instrumentation than ever before, neue grafik s music is informed by movement and in turn offers so much for dancers to respond to.

bleu nuit (bn) is glad to introduce to you to its second release red light city (bn02) by nice-based french duo gabardines. rising french djs from the south of france, gabardines is composed by olivier aka ghini-b and régis aka redj. if ghini-b and redj already have a couple of vinyl-only releases to their respective solo alias, gabardines is about to release his first ep under this name. indeed, in 2017, gabardines brought out sweat things ep on simple things records via bandcamp as well as a remix of lady b s liaisons on their own imprint swipe white limited a couple of years before. red light city ep follows the lead or rather, the musical line, introduced by both the label and gabardines predecessor flavio folco (bn01). as can be listened from all three tracks, gabardines are sticking to these break and gangster beats, offering a balanced release with some warmup (a1), peak-time (a2) and closing/after spirit (b1).

birminghams jayson wynters makes his second outing for dont be afraid in under a year with four earth-shaking rollers from his digbeth laboratory. across four tracks wynters neatly surveys the state of the underground house and techno union in the uk and beyond, taking in the stepping, broken rhythms of beta (version), the dancefloor annihilation of one hundred n forty, and the frantic, midwest rollage of into the void, before concluding on an optimistic note with the kansei method. also look out for wynters café artum project which launches in birmingham soon, bringing a much needed hub for vinyl to the city thanks to last year s successful fundraiser.

the sandy beaches of new south wales, australia, give way to dusty beats of aussie producer shinji in this funky seven inch single on cold busted. taken from his forthcoming album in colour (coming in april 2018), this single features two retro-tastic tracks that will send the beatheads swinging across the floor. “second wind” opens up with heavy rhodes piano chords accompanied by a crucial rhythm and streetwise horns. evoking the soundtrack to a tv detective series from the ‘70s, the cut unloads serious action in a 45-slinger’s dj set. flip the record for “grand mash,” which begins in the hip hop zone before soundtracking a movie scene of the pimp-mobile once again in pursuit. groovy horns, tough beats, and a way-cool-for-school spoken interlude move this one to the top of the crate-digging charts. shinji strongly delivers the goods, queuing things up nicely for his sure-to-be essential long-player.

the second outing from yaleesa hall in this two-piece ep series on will & ink. the 13th release on the label packs a visceral punch across four fresh tracks that are perfect for dance floor deployment. first track daisy wright kicks off with minimal but impactful drum rhythms that eventually get cut up with tumbling sirens, hammering hits and blasts of dirty noise. it s hugely physical stuff, while follow up barbara adams is more stripped back and mysterious. icy hi hats tick, howling synths sound bring a sadness and the depth of stern field as sounds play out above, below and all around you is truly standout. harriet brown then sinks into a deeper electro groove with spangled bass, before a vip mix then slows things down to a dread fuelled dub wise swagger that eventually breaks out into oscillating, stuttering rave madness. it makes for one hell of a thrilling ride and kicks off a promising year for both yaleesa hall and the will & ink label.

matuss continue to deliver deep and soulful techno via her vinyl only imprint absence seizure, which she helms alongside abe duque. opening with whistler, matuss delivers heavyweight bass tones, dubbed out drums and obscure synthesiser transitions before zoya the destroyer provides eerie atmospheres, crisp percussion and subtle mid-range motifs which sit on top of a melodic low-end. on the flip side we have stranger things, which sets an ominous tone with murky ambiences and ethereal pads underpinned by a powerful kick, rumbling sub-bass and percolating rhythms to close the release.

a generation younger than the founders of the teklife crew, dj rashad and dj spinn, dj taye was originally a rapper and beat maker before hooking up with the collective and jumping headfirst into the world of footwork production, dancing and djing. however, it was rashad’s untimely passing in 2014 that was the unlikely catalyst for developing the sounds and ideas for this album.

3 expansive edits of turkish funk and psychedelia, each dubbed out through tape delays and spring reverbs, as well as carefully eq-ed and mastered for an enhanced sonic experience. side a kicks off with the low slung funk, featuring an infectious bassline which weaves between subtle flashes of spring reverb, whispered vocals, each underpinned by pounding drums. side b begins with biz burdayiz, a relentless drum loop and singular vocal hit looped around and manipulated with tape delays, and the record closes with günesi kesin, a tense funk break which builds before reversing inside of itself. hand stamped vinyl only.

following on from his debut ep on drumcode earlier this year, ilario alicante returns. for the past few years ilario alicante has enjoyed something of an unintentional ibiza kinship with adam beyer. when the swede played his special annual sets on the amnesia terrace for cocoon, for three years out of four, the italian has been right there playing alongside him, ensuring his talents were on the radar of the drumcode chief. ilario made his first appearance on the label in 2016 with the stirring temporary featuring on a-sides vol.4, before securing his first full-length release with the awakened ep that dropped earlier this year. figures & echoes deepens his contribution to the label with half a dozen powerful cuts. figure of ra opens the ep, combining a rousing vocal loop, pulsating beats and effective melodic interlude to fantastic effect. the acid runner follows and is true to its name, characterised by echoing vocal effects that lead to a piercing 303-line that hits with peak-time power. virgos echoes features a persistent synth line that combining effectively with lush layers of melody to create an atmospheric impact. third eye delivers an exhilarating dose of rave thanks to the hypnotizing riff that runs throughout.

next up in the apparel music limited series is loure with a 4 track ep which also includes a remix by saine. the name of this work by the aussie is smooth talk and it contains all the stylistic elements that make the melbournian one of the most talented in the scene at the moment. the ep kicks off with the title track which can be certified as a dancefloor banger with its solid rhythmics and the smooth synths playing along with a hint of acid keeps going with mutual motion which gives a display of what this guy can do in terms of creating spacey deep harmonies, such a groovy way to lower the tones before the remix of the 1st track smooth talk. saine here puts his signature once again with another banging tune crafted on loure sounds, adding his touch with deep percussions, a substantial compact beat with a bass-line that will get you carried away. the closing track is the right decompression after a journey through sounds: rolling snares, vocal samples chasing each other and a happy touch to finish in style.

distant echoes has been building a name in the last few years since he debuted on the dystopian label in 2014 and toured all around the world, yet, he s been producing and playing electronic/house/techno music since almost two decades. as out-er co-founder, he previously released music before the beginning of his bond with dystopian. in the last years, while distant echoes has mostly focused on releasing on dystopian, out-er has indeed expanded its range of collaborations worldwide, by putting out music from juan atkins, orlando voorn, terrence dixon and more.

beware, discomatin is back. in 2018, the parisian crew of diggers and dj’s originally known for their edits goes official with fully licensed and remastered reissues. for this new adventure, they chose an incredible in-demand french boogie ep from diva, an eighties funk band from bordeaux. diva only released one ep with la nuit, a sentimental, almost poetic boogie banger with great synth, guitar and vocal parts. the track could honestly have been a radio hit in the eighties with some real promotion. today, it’s still time to make it right and it is already an anthem in the french underground disco scene. originally on the b side of the 1985 original release on cactus, la nuit is here available with its two different versions (12inch and 7inch mix) and comes also with prise au piege, a more synth-pop influenced funk track which gave its name to the original release. the band was formed by gabrielle andriampanana, alex louisor and olivier renoir. before diva, these last two already played together in the local new-wave band bolton which was one of the first of the area to use synthetisers. even if they had a small recognition at the time, the original release stood quite underground. thanks to discomatin, its now available to the real connoisseurs and still with the fantastic illustrations of french artist camille de cussac on the back cover.

moon gangs (better known as william young, keyboardist in bristol-based electronic outfit beak>) takes the reins first, delivering a thunderous take on the original’s faster-paced second half. typically of the artist, the track builds and builds in intensity, climaxing with an apocalypse of emotional, layered synths.
bristol’s cuts strips back the elements for a much darker reworking. a single, repeating piano note echoes into wide, open space alongside the original’s antique violins before clattering percussion and synths enter the mix for the most foreboding turn of the release.
closing the ep, former mogwai member john cummings also bases his reinterpretation around the original’s piano. but where cuts leans on moody darkness, cummings take is more upbeat, courtesy of a driving four to the floor kick and fidgety, high-pitched piano.

200 copies - vinyl only - giant records sees in the new year with a killer ep from a bright new producer from poland, by the name of, mariuz kryska, mariuz offers up two peak time grooves here with remix duties falling on, sascha dive and giant head honcho grant dell. the first track up is low jam, which sees the original mix dive into a deep drum lead swing reminiscent of old todd terry beats, that have gone before, all topped off with a spoken word and tight hats and rides. next up is sascha dive - giving low jam a slowed down dubby feel with some sweet dubbed-out stabs that evolves into that deep house sound that sascha has mastered over the years. next cut is no perspective mariuzs original mix is a relentless bass heavy work out which weaves around some slick west coast gangsta rhymes and detroit style strings and pads. grant dells take on no perspective leans on the detroit style pad, from the original and adds some off kilter 808 beats that sit nicely along some smart 303 stabs and the gangsta rhyme which then merges into a slick techno jam with added breakbeats.

label boss nachtbraker is finally making his solo debut on quartet series after a successful ep last year on heist recordings. widely known for exploring different sounds and angles with his productions, this record is the most club-orientated to date. intricate ghetto house with a slight french touch to straight up 4x4 with a pinch of jacking flavour would be an accurate description of this release. the use of 90s hip hop samples within this auditory concoction successfully highlights nachtbrakers excellent ear for detail and penchant for exciting, eclectic and downright weird changeovers. the main hitter taking over the full a side is the title track small towel people. an uplifting bass line accompanied by heated 909 percussion and a hypnotic thriving arp to seal the deal. on the flipside, youll find kippendijen on the b1. a heavyweight in the house category, some glimpses of early days jacking house and a little french touch on the filter. throw in a breakdown even houdini wouldnt be able to handle and youll find yourself putting this track on repeat. then when the needle hits the b2 groove, zomaar kicks off with an energetic mpc style breakbeat before morphing into a deep jam of lush chords and a thrusting 4x4 beat. the track closes after switching back to the first part of the record and ends in a sublimely deep and dubby breakbeat.

the next collaborative release between freeride millenium and pauls musique is a terrific two-tracker from manchester artist joseph louis harland manning under his new alias los angeles with the 7? vinyl release artwork designed by daniel rajcsanyi as part of his ‘baby exhibition in austria. joseph louis harland manning was the drummer of the band wu lyf and is involved in projects like los porcos, the mancunian boyband menage a trois and dream lovers. under his other aliases he released on aficionado, cracki, ocean records and is it balearic? sub label u?ber as well as having made music videos for molly nilsson. here he is fine form across a pair of delicate and moving synth tracks. opener ‘lamour is a gentle cut that starts with celestial chords and wide-open expanses of synth before a buried deep groove slowly comes to the fore. breathy vocals also add to the loved-up, dreamy feel and the whole thing carries you away in a majestic reverie that shifts from ambience to new age house. the track features the artists own field recordings from the streets of berlin, twisting up sounds from the sidewalk into percussive notes that give an organic feel. the perfectly soothing second offering is ‘i wanna go to heaven is a gorgeous synth piece that suspends you in a crystal clear blue sky on a warm summers day. chords are smeared and stretched whilst angelic, wordless vocals drift by. it is the sound of a blissful passage to the afterlife and will leave you feeling cleansed.

the ecstatic sounds of a fruit machine spewing out winnings or a computer game bleeping a player upwards to the next level chirp and bleep all over ‘true beauty (and other things), a jubilant and chaotic tape from philadelphia’s nah aka michul kuun. his first release under new alias michul kuun, the seven track album lurches between church bells, angsty video game chimes and battered drums (kunn pummelled drums in punk band 1994! in the past). there are flashes of mutated house and techno (“threes, threes, threes” and “written house”) as panicky, stammery rhythm structures are built up, battered down then kicked around. “taking station” seems like it’s going to be the most mellow, almost melodic jam, then rounds off with a solid minute of air horn, before exiting on what sounds like a motorbike through a swooshing traffic for jittery finisher, “follow thruu”. - claire sawers, for wire magazine

following the success in 2017 of the koharu kisaragi/ryuichi sakamoto collaboration neo-plant, uk label lag records continues its revival of vintage electronic esoterica with kissh&#333,, tennyo, the 1984 lp by joe hisaishi, premier film composer of japan. whilst known worldwide for his elegiac scores to studio ghibli classics like princess mononoke and spirited away, it s a different kind of soundtrack behind kissh&#333,, tennyo, intended as it was to be a musical accompaniment to an 80s manga of the same name. it s also a showcase of hisaishi s lesser known talents as an electronic musician, shortly before he became composer of choice for world-renowned directors such as hayao miyazaki and takeshi kitano. on kissh&#333,, tennyo we hear hisaishi unleash synth arpeggios with all the suspense of a giallo horror. his cold minimalist ambience evokes the likes of terry riley. tracks like &#34880,,,,,,,,,&#12398,,,,,,,,,&#25239,,,,,,,,,&#20105,,,,,,,,, ( blood feud ) meanwhile lighten the mood, running at car chase speed with the bounce of early ymo. all in all, befittingly beguiling music for the cartoon tale of a modern femme fatale who has the powers of an ancient deity (the eponymous kissh&#333,,,,,,,,, tennyo or &#21513,,,,,,,,,&#31077,,,,,,,,,&#22825,,,,,,,,,&#22899,,,,,,,,, , to use the album s japanese title). in the same spirit of the manga, lag records have combined the old with the new on kissh&#333,,,,,,,,, tennyo. licensed by tokuma japan communications, the original release from classic anime label animage comes with new artwork by luna monogatari, and a remastering courtesy of jerome schmitt at the airlab. a download card and poster will be included with the gatefold. lp which comes on standard black vinyl.

inner surface music is proud to present its next release from canadian duo mdd. falling inside opens the ep bringing together industrial and punk prototypes of the duo’s influences in the shape of a techno stomper. chunky kick drums and gnarly textures fizzle and pop to the march of the industrial rhythms before the low slung bassline and abstract vocal cuts take the track into a darker realm. tension builds and welds together heavy broken kick patterns with crisp but rusty percussion demolishing everything in sight. the elements amalgamate together creating tension with walls of sub bass, while remaining spacious and nonchalant with glacial atmospheric pads, dropping and breaking like a thunderstorm overhead.

hamburg’s achim maerz arrives on dba with an expansive twelve track package. split across a 12” ep and a cassette, “experiments” is a collection of live, improvised house jams recorded in the summer of 2015 in the artist’s home studio. the title refers to the fast and rough recording of the material, with the aim of catching a mood before process and self-awareness take over. fans of maerz’ previous releases on the essential wake up! label amongst others will immediately recognise his trademark, ethereal house sound.
