the legendary gig that joe strummer, singer from the punk rock band “the clash” attended and inspired his writing their classic ‘white man in hammersmith palais’ took place on the 05th june 1977. at the hammersmith palais venue on shepherd’s bush road w6, london during the height of punk mania. the full line up for the show were all jamaican artists dillinger, leroy smart, delroy wilson (all the first time from jamaica) and ken boothe. “ken boothe for uk pop reggae” who had already scored some hits with ‘everything i own’ and ‘crying over you’ in 1974. joe strummer was expecting roots, rock, reggae but the sound system this evening ‘admiral ken sound’ was playing ‘four tops all night’ as in soul and northern soul that were staple crowd pleasers at the time to warm up the audience, but in joe’s eyes the music should have reflected more jamaican roots based music. the song also deals with bigger issues of black and white unity, but some people including the punk rockers. “they’re all too busy fighting, for a good place under the lighting”. joe strummer himself was looking for fun. “i’m the whiteman in the palais... just looking for fun”.

arkada records is a new independent electro/techno imprint hailing from london u.k. the label is being presented with the &#64257,,rst split vinyl ep featuring the sounds of t15dm (earwiggle /trensmat) and errorbeauty (arkada, crobot muzik).

a chance encounter at university during the acid house summer of ’88 and subsequent bonding over baby ford’s “oochy koochy” established a life-long friendship between leicester lads, jimi o’callaghan and al green. inspired by the sounds of detroit, early ny house like murk and masters at work and the emerging uk sounds of lfo, orbital and aphex twin, the pair began djing and making music as the wild geese. their first ep, “the wild geese ep”, was released in 1994 on their own giddy goose recordings imprint. the guys pressed 500 copies and, with jimi’s connections made interning with pete tong’s ffrr, sold copies direct to london shops. the record sported packaging designed to look like an american 12” and an accompanying press release attributed the ep to a fictitious dj duo hailing from wisconsin. rave reviews followed and a distribution deal was struck with vital uk, who produced and sold another 500 copies worldwide. another ep followed a year later. sadly, plans for a third ep on the label never materialized, but the pair remain close to this day. 24 years later we are honored to reintroduce this genre-defying, uniquely forward-thinking ep to today’s dance floors.

strut presents the brand new album an angel fell from cosmic jazz travellers the pyramids, led by saxophonist idris ackamoor. produced by malcolm catto of the heliocentrics, the album was recorded during an intense week at quatermass studios in london. some of the many highlights include the poignant title track depicting a fallen angel in purgatory, outrage and grief on the powerful, hard hitting soliloquy for michael brown and the lilting, beautiful album closer, sunset. the pyramids originally came together in 1972 at antioch college, yellow springs, ohio where teachers included renowned pianist, cecil taylor. after forming in paris and embarking on a cultural odyssey across africa, the group recorded three independent albums,‘lalibela (1973), king of kings (1974) and birth/speed/merging (1976) and became renowned for their striking live shows, mixing percussive, spiritual and space-age jazz with performance theatre and dance.

l_cio is a brazilian artist who brings his own flute playing to his music. he has previously collaborated with the likes of portable on the huge hit ‘surrender’ and is a live act who has held residencies at plenty of key clubs in brazil. he’s also toured all over the world from egg london to robert johnson in frankfurt and released on labels like perlon, soul clap records and d.edge. his eight-track album is an emotive affair with deep house grooves embellished with his own spine tingling instrumentals and flute.

born in munich, sebastian schnitzenbaumer aka belp partially grew up on the seychelles islands off the coast of east africa. educated in classical piano, those two gravitational poles, european and african influences, became the basis for his musical development. having travelled extensively with a closer connection to london over the years, belp kept his base in munich, becoming part of a small alternative scene questioning the predominantly rich and posh surface of the city. blending jazz, dub and noise, an emphasis on darkness in his broken beat oriented works evolved as a reaction to a rather hedonistic society preferring warm and uplifting sounds.

joe powers is from edinburgh, far outside the network of the grime capital of london. his caffeinated productions as proc fiskal are faster than usual, with many clocking in at 160bpm. ‘the highland mob’, his 2017 debut ep, opened up his music to open-eared footwork and drum’n’bass fans as well as the grime crowd. after following that up with a jungle-inflected ep on cosmic bridge, ‘insula’ switches the feel and intention towards a personal, and melodic music with one foot in grime, infused with often comic, often wistful recorded moments from his environment. he says ‘i wanted to be aware of where the music is coming from, referencing things i’m presently experiencing, like making grime, my radar radio show, phone addiction, alcohol, my surroundings, girls, depression, positivity, being unemployed, being employed and hating it, my friends etc. trying to be true to myself instead of relying on other peoples’ nostalgia, and focusing on now.’ the record is a huge leap in vision, with delicate, pointillist melodies and intricate edits reminiscent of grime producers such as terror danjah. it also resonates with japanese video game music like that recently explored on the ‘diggin in the carts’ compilation. ‘i think i probably make tunes to get out emotions i don’t express in day-to-day life. i used clips of my friends talking, drunk folk, and general scottish life to preserve and represent what my experience is like right now, like a time capsule. social media notification sounds are designed to release serotonin, which is what i’d like my music to do, to make me, and other people happy, and in using these manipulative noises in a positive way, i like to think i’m taking back the power of the manipulation.’ proc fiskal is adventurous and thoughtful as a producer, and at the young age of 21, his debut album is very advanced in its ideas and execution

british dj/producer bearface has been on a bit of a roll of later. aside from releases on his own beartone label, the london-based label owner has also found time to deliver outstanding cuts to the likes of exploited ghetto, which housed his last release, the wonderful moon . this time around, he comes correct on his own beartone label with a record that s notable for its quirky demeanour and undoubted eclecticism. opening up the release is the sounds of mumbai nights . although it gets us underway in fairly innocuous fashion, it quickly finds its feet thanks to a brilliant, whaling indian-inspired vocal that weaves in and out throughout. a whimsical track of that sort that s sure to be a hit with more daring djs, it s an auspicious start to a release that s never lacking in personality. as is his forte, bearface then goes much deeper in search of kicks on data storm , taking us taking us down the rabbit hole to a place that s full of enticing oddities throughout. after this, the frankly bonkers sound of the electro-leaning title track sista take centre stage. a thoroughly intense peak-time workout, it s full of attitude and an indication of the producer s more gnarly and abrasive approach. all things considered, it s sure to get the night moving in an altogether different direction wherever it s unleashed. closing out the ep is the drum heavy sounds of march . a broody track that s tailor made for the night s more relentless moments, it s a a fitting way with which to sign off an eclectic and dizzying release. the latest chapter in the beartone story is a captivating listen throughout.

sami baha is a turkish producer based in south east london. his music was introduced to the world via his 2016 ep “mavericks” (planet mu), recorded while he was moving from istanbul to london where he’s now been living the last 3 years. sami got into producing through being a rapper himself, working with local rappers in turkey and producing beats for them, before setting his sights outside the country.
while his first record was focused around a more familiar trap based hiphop sound, “free for all” expands its range into more unfamiliar territory and also brings his production into focus by featuring a number of mcs from all corners of the globe: uk drill squad 67’s dimzy, stockholm’s yung lean and chicago rapper and singer dj nate (aka flexxbabii) who’s previously recorded on planet mu as a footwork producer. the record also features the rowdy sing-song of egyptian mcs dawsha and abanob from cairo whom sami met while on tour in egypt.

the third release on the sister label, new york trax imports, comes from the legendary dutch producer and founder of one of the most eclectic underground record labels, vincent koreman aka drvg cvltvre of new york haunted. since 2009, drvg cvltvre has been working on his own blend of dystopian acid, no wave, and experimental house. respected in the international underground for his groundbreaking work in experimental techno as ra-x in the 90&#8242,,s on labels like bunker and kk records, drvg cvltvre comes from a diy punk background and opts for hard work rather than hollow pose. the 4-track ep for new york trax imports is an accurate representation of his style: dark and melancholic, but also uncompromisingly intense.
