when people think of tuff gong they usually think of bob marley and rightly so, as he was nicknamed and often called tuff gong and from this his early releases which came out on the tough gong label. but tuff gong was also the name of a recording complex named after bob marley hat included a top level recording studio, pressing plant and distribution centre that would allow reggae music to carry on many years after his sad and too early demise. we focus for this release on the work carried out by the great scientist on the songs of the black solidarity label run by ossie thomas (aka joe the boss) recorded at tough gong studios. one of the foremost recording, pressing and distribution facilities on the jamaican island set up from the work of bob marley to carry forward reggae music. hope you enjoy this set.

tommy mccook ist saxofonist und gruendungsmitglied der legendaeren band the skatalites, als sessionmusiker hat er alle moeglichen spielarten jamaikanischer musik beeinflusst: von ska ueber rocksteady bis reggae. als kind kam er mit seiner mutter ende der 30er-jahre von kuba nach jamaika, mit 14 spielte er in swing- und jazzbands. 1962 begann er, in coxone dodds studio one zu spielen und war so an der entwicklung von ska beteiligt. vier jahre spaeter kam rocksteady, mccook war wieder dabei, 1970 uebernahmen schlagzeug und bass die macht, und auch bei dem, was bald als reggae die welt erobern sollte, mischte mccook vorne mit. neue produzenten wie bunny lee, joe gibbs und studios wie channel 1 waren klug genug, auf die dienste des veteranen zurueckzugreifen. aus dieser zeit stammen auch die titel auf dieser compilation, auf der mccook sein saxofon ueber den tracks schweben laesst. ein durchaus jazzig anmutendes album, nicht nur fuer reggae-fans ein vergnuegen. die cd enthaelt vier bonus-tracks.

als einer der meilensteine der jamaikanischen dubgeschichte gilt tappa zukies album -in dub-. 1976 erschien es zu einer zeit, als dub eine hochphase erlebte, aber selbst im vergleich mit den nicht wenigen hochkaraetigen alben dieser zeit, schneidet -in dub- selbst heute noch hervorragend ab. tappa zukie, geboren als david sinclair in kingston, jamaica, war so etwas wie die rechte hand des produzenten bunny -striker- lee, wenn dieser seine beruehmten -late night sessions- abhielt. was lag da naeher, als einmal eine eigene session aufzunehmen? acht rhythms auf -in dub- stammen von bunny lee, einer vom produzenten jo jo hookim, ein weiterer von ossie hibbert. die vokalversionen zu einigen tracks auf diesem album finden sich uebrigens auf zukies album -m. p.l. a.-. aber natuerlich funktionieren die 13 tracks auf -in dub- auch ganz ohne worte.

1974 er¢ffnete lee scratch perry sein black ark studio in kingston, jamaika. mit einfachem equipment - einem teac-vierspurger?t, einem soundcraft-mischpult, einer echoplex-delay-einheit und ein paar phaser-effekten, die er zusammen mit dem roland-re201-space-echo benutzte. das ganze mischte er von vier auf zwei spuren, fertig war der verwirbelte sound, der das black ark studio von allen anderen auf jamaika unterschied. >dub treasures from the black ark< versammelt einige sch?tze aus den archiven des studios und beweist, dass perry zu recht die rolle der vision?ren leitfigur im reggae zukommt.

mit winston wright stellt sich ein weiterer eher unbekannter held der jamaikanischen musikgeschichte vor. obwohl viele seinen name nicht kennen, haben sie den sound seiner hammondorgel oft gehört. wie etwa auf *liquidator*, dem klassiker aus dem jahr 1969, den er als teil der harry j allstars einspielte. viele aufnahmen der 70er-jahre tragen seine handschrift in sachen orgel, klavier und arrangements, und bereits in den 60ern war er auf einigen stücken als teil von duke reids hausband, den supersonics unter tommy mccook, zu hören. als sessionmusiker begann der 1944 geborene wright seine karriere und war zunächst mitglied der hausband des treasure isle studios. zwischen 1966 und 1968 ist er auf vielen rocksteady-tracks zu hören. ab 1975 war er teil der liveband von toots and the maytals. die compilation *the liquidator strikes back* konzentriert sich indes auf wrights studioarbeit und lässt einige seiner besten auftritte revue passieren.
