following some now cult releases on mutli culti. turbo recordings (with the much-acclaimed “mz”) and his recent lp “lotos land” on japanese imprint endless flight. our favourite east-berlin born child sascha funke is finally coming up with an ep on hippie dance’s sister label your and your hippie friends. “i guess more than one of you have noticed my obsession with sascha funke’s music over the past years since it is an essential part in my dj sets. after the pause he gave his solo work to put his attention into his amazing band project saschienne together with julienne dessagne (aka fantastic twins. also his partner in life). he came back with a really cool ep on kompakt records which i played over and over and left me wanting for more. being close friends gave me the luxury of having access to his material before other people and when i would visit the coolest couple in berlin. sascha would always play me his new tunes in the car while rolling through the city. every time i would ask for those tracks to play them and in the club. people that i would play with would often ask who was behind them. as it happened with tiga one night in cologne. and eventually led to sascha’s music being released on turbo recordings and multi culti the following months. now i finally got the chance and honour to release a sascha funke ep on our own humble label... acatenango. like every time. it all started with me visiting berlin. sascha playing his new material while cruising around on board of his german car. me getting in trance while listening to it. asking for it and playing it right away in my next sets. three super cool tracks. all very different from each other but somehow connected with the inimitable funke touch. powerful yet elegant. hypnotic yet fun. brutal yet sophisticated. sascha funke... he’s a hippie and he’s a friend.” rebolledo

apollo proudly presents the return of sw. joined by partner svn for a sublime 6 track ep. sws lush sound design and hypnotic arrangements of 2017s the album had hearts and minds swooning following its license from sued to apollo. its balmy glory won over pitchfork (deeply expressive debut album 8/10). rolling stone (best electronic albums 2017) and xlr8r (best releases 2017) amongst many others. one year later. sw and svn have gone into the studio. together to make some original music specifically for apollo. the results are the 6 tracks on this ep. they share in a typically taciturn statement. taking inspiration from the iconic house and techno of the mid / late 90s - sw and svn combine dreamy melodies and mesmeric grooves with unfussy. focussed minimalism. their beguiling. modern take on classic sounds and rhythms remains thrillingly unique and elusive. while sw and svn are more comfortable out of the limelight. this 6 track ep for apollo once again proves that they are rightly worthy of the hype that swirls around them.
debut album from blawan. possibly one of the finest techno records you ll hear this year ... physically and mentally draining in the best way possible. wet will always dry is maybe the most complete statement from blawan to date. and as such should be ignored at your peril. this becomes evident from the album-opening “klade.” a dizzying. tumbling flight of pure energy over overlapping fields of electrified menace. this sets the stage for “careless.” which retains the hazardous. crackling atmosphere but dials back the intensity just enough to make room for a new feature. blawan’s eerie and disembodied vocals.

cameaʼ....s latest release on her imprint neverwhere pays homage to her hometown seattleʼ....s original underground rave warehouse. naf studios. where she went dancing in the late 90s and began her journey that ultimately landed her in berlin. also where nirvannaʼ....s “smells like teen spirit” video was filmed (and ironically now a catholic publishing house). the hedonistic venue is legendary to those who picked up rave flyers scattered on the streets of seattle and took a chance on an emerging new electronic music scene. both originals reflect the raw warehouse vibe of this era. and matrixxman and markus suckut have weighed in with heavy remixes. markus puts his signature on the naf 97 original with a deep space atmospheric techno banger. and matrixxman reworks the original 303 recordings in jack u. sending it into another dimension - and even further.
electronic music label sheik n beik announces its new release snbv013. an ep called daisy cutter by jem. this ep is the third release in their series aimed at celebrating the diversity and history of new york and its boroughs. as sheik n beik s hometown and source of constant inspiration. the label focuses on spotlighting and paying homage to the five boroughs of new york including manhattan. queens. brooklyn. staten island and the bronx. each borough s flag is given a modern and colorful twist via the cover art and design of each outer jacket. the first release in the series. manhattan. featured local nyc hero and co-founder of voodoo down records n conduit. and the second. kathisma resident mr. dello s vaadhoo ep. the new ep from jem. dedicated to the bronx. opens up with title track daisy cutter. which directly sets the tone of the release with a straightforward. dynamic techno. elevated by an eerie. dark atmosphere. it goes on with neb. a downtempo second track with a lighter tone that progressively gets back to the initial mysterious mood and capriciously brightens it with warmer back-and-forth sounds. next on the 12- is semiotic. a third track structured by a clever balance of deconstructed rhythms and sparse acid and synth melodies in the continuity of the lighter. warmer mood previously built up. the ep ends with temple. with a more aggressive accent animated by several lighter melodic layers and a stifled background bass.
cleveland is forever in search of the brown note. this is his second offering for the esp institute. side a’s tusk is a beautiful paradox—rhythm programs that churn like the inner workings of a grandfather clock. unmistakably mechanical. yet fashioned through muted analogue instrumentation that paints a deceptively organic picture. the crystallized jangle of fm synth voices toy with the softened drum patterns and vibrant animal-like chord gestures over nearly seven minutes of splendor. on side b. aku digs further into mysticism. manifesting digital jungle themes. cleverly abstracted through erratic bleeps. distant tribal drums. atonal flutters and synthetic bird calls. the cinematic quality of clevelands production shines through both tracks. but its aku that sweeps us from reality to embark on a moonlit expedition in search long lost treasures. proving cleveland a virtuoso skilled in building complex narratives with sound. these two songs will modulate your frequencies.
STILL HOPE FEAT. ANTHONY ANAXAGOROU / WAAJEED REMIX
12" Vinyl UK18.06.18
still hope is their second single and the follow up to motorway jam (their double a side with palms trax from late last year) which sees them collaborate with anthony anaxagorou. a british born cypriot award winning poet and essayist. whose poetry and fiction have appeared on bbc newsnight. bbc4. itv and vice. hearing his lyrics via their good friend simbad. secretsundaze connected with anthony and still hope is the fruit of their labour. the original is a potent and political spoken word piece delivered over a rolling house groove. definitely one for the deeper moments with its late night heady feel and full vocal not letting up. the poems in the heart floor version strips the vocal back and adds dramatic strings for a more direct dance floor approach. ex slum village detroit producer waajeed released a couple of killer eps in 2017 on his own dirt tech reck imprint so we had to get him aboard for the remix. his detroit hardcore dub does what is says on the tin and is a peak time slammer while his searching dub goes down a jazzier. spacey route with live sounding drums and dreamy pads.
the ep -a form of travel unknown to humans- is chasing us. guiding and forcing a way simultaneously. the sound is harsh but has an immaculate precision to it –void of air- compelling the listener toward a light. seducing us to tear through the night. we enter with „s.m.o.d. – sticks- a deep and magnetic sound opening up slowly. starting to breathe and to merge into -s.m.o.d. – cell culture- which gives a much more metallic flavour but never the less beat driven – fast and strident- maybe even hasty. pushing to skip a beat of the heart. to finish off with -s.m.o.d – pulse- carrying an unsettling almost disturbing quality. formulating a mechanical sound alienated from the human experience. the ep creates a seductive space outside our comfort zone. inviting to explore a space and travel unknown to humans. gimme more.
