surely not is a brilliant house number with moodyman indebted drum pattern based around a soul edged vocal sample which unfolds into a deep late night groover. this is an essential release for detroit aficionados. on the flipside earl goes in with british knights a frenetic subloaded tribal number with a lot of swagger and the odd nod to classic todd edwards and afrika bambaataa along the way. this one is all about the stabbing repetition and the infectious bass line that builds and builds euphorically until it drops into a rhythm track that commands the hips to move and the fist to punch the sky.

in 2006, hip-hop was turned on its head by the arrival of chicagos kenny dennis, a proudly married, mustachioed and middle-aged rapper repping no-nonsense lyrics and a salt-of-the-earth swagger. this unlikely hero delivered a handful of classics via the album, dennehy, and then disappeared. but in 2011, kennys cult of fans were given a gift: the long-lost 1993 lp theres a situation on the homefront from his theretofore unheard boom-bap crew tha grimm teachaz. (kenny was then known as kdz, tha killa deacon. the group was briefly signed to jive records.) as it turned out, that gift was twofold. inspired by the anticon-backed release of that unearthed gem, kenny has teamed up with producers jel and odd nosdam to make a brand new record, a reintroduction of sorts, dubbed the kenny dennis ep.

it might seem odd for a band without a full-length to enjoy this sort of praise. but escort is definitely not your typical band. escort is big. literally. the seventeen-member disco orchestra, founded by producers eugene cho and dan balis, and fronted by lead singer adeline michele, features an incredible cast of musicians who have played with everyone from indie-rock titans arcade fire to avant-classical luminaries alarm will sound. scissor sisters frontman jake shears recently described escort as the >best disco you have ever heard<. he just might be right.

the eraly years of a decade are good times for exploration, just like in 1993 when we (alex & sasa) first started working together. we rented a huge loft space on ave b & 2nd st. in the east village in manhattan. the winter was tough, we had 16 snow storms and due to a landlord who hated everybody, we had our heating turned off except for a few hours in the morning, sometimes not even that... the only way to stay warm was to wear hats, gloves and scarves the whole winter... but that was fine because nightlife was a lot of fun. there was a good club/party every night. right below where we lived was one of the best after hour clubs called >save the robots<. but one of my favourite parties was >sugar babes< which was at the cbgbs gallery space right next door to cbgbs, every monday night. the dj used to sample parts of the records he was mixing and then just play the loop of the sample and alongside was a drummer playing to it. it was really inspiring. so we wanted to go back to this idea of sound assembly and create a new series for us to work with called >skematics< its like a diagram or manual to help understand the interconnections between the odd parts we find and assemble, an imaginary manual for a new decade that has not been musically defined yet

recorded in the immediate aftermath of his last ep >passed me by<, this new doublepack from andy stott features six new productions that are more desolate and exposed than anything on its predecessor. the opening >submission< tumbles into being with layers of washed-out digital revolutions, creating an artificial landscape thats quite at odds with the analogue machinations that follow - yet somehow rendering the alienated feel of this material perfectly. >posers< nudges its way into being abruptly and embeds another squashed funk variant thas all low-lit neon and growling textures, awkwardly shuffling into a more robust 4/4 template suffused with sparkling percussion and disembodied vocals. >bad wires< is the centrepiece of the ep, a relentless percussive cluster*ck that belies its slow tempo with a fearless rhythmic attitude. its as immersive and narcotic as anything ever produced by stott - peeling away one layer after another with each repeated listen. >we stay together< (part one) was the first track written for the ep and offers a more spacious narrative and a more sparkling, hazy palette - culminating in a beautifully frayed central hook thats somehow in keeping with the vhs aesthetic of both jamal moss and ferris bueller. >cherry eye< tumbles deep into a darkened hole before ep closer >cracked< turns up, fuelled by an odd mixture of adrenalin and sorrow to send you on your way.... buzzing and forlorn

the brilliantly monikered big strick - familial elder to omar s and responsible for the odd killer release on his younger cousins fxhe imprint - belatedly sates the appetite of record collectors keen to indulge in his recent album detroit heat with a six track selection of the choicest cuts spread across this twelve inch. seemingly drawing influence from a myriad of motor city influences, detroit heat impressively flits between murky deep house, tracky techno and hypnotic jack-tracks. like many of his contemporaries, strick is a sucker for cement mixer production - that distinctly detroitian sound where every beat, groove or bassline sounds like the master tapes have been marinated in grit. that trademark sound, alongside a solid selection of floor-friendly grooves, makes detroit heat an excellent addition to the motor city house canon. the rubbery spinal atmospherics of >under tone< and the tony coates vocally assisted jack of >maybe 1 day< are particular highlights!

bedroom community broadens the scope with their newest release: en garde by puzzle muteson, a mysterious, intimate record by a fearless songwriter and lyricist from the windswept isle of wight. arranged and produced by collaborators and labelmates nico muhly and valgeir sigurdsson, en garde is a strange, comforting and alarmingly personal record. driven, spare lyrics are hoisted high by vocals of steady, sturdy tremble. each tune swells with plush guitar pluck in a sea of orchestration and electronics. recorded in the greenhouse studios in iceland, the album collects puzzle muteson s odd and beautiful stories - about love and horses, rust and polar bears, heartbreak and birds. puzzle s songs are curious sounds from a troubled heart and his lyrics are urgent and open, striking a note with their vulnerable memories. i was once a horse is an unforgettable song about nostalgia. the first single and title track, en garde , pits puzzle s longing against waves of dense strings and jagged rhythm, while perspex disguise sets his naked, translucent vocals against shimmering piano that refracts off epic chords. in flamingo head he sings, i left your house. you let me. i left you ugly , buffeted by guitar and distant murmurs. not a single thing could take this magical sight. i ll find you still , he sings in medusa , the story of a man tracking down a lost love. like many bedroom community recordings, en garde takes an unexpected and unique voice and elevates it out of any easily discernible pocket. puzzle muteson could be folk or something completely different - instead he s an intense stranger from the isle of wight - at once both familiar and unfamiliar. en garde heralds a haunting and essential new voice, beautiful, earned and yearning

i just woke and its pretty cold outside. i havent opened the window yet, but i somehow know it and im listening to these six tracks again and try to make an approximation of why and how i have done this ep. they are pretty different from each other but tell the same story or at least are part of the same one as a matter of fact. maybe they were done as an excuse for my overdue album which is scheduled again for this year or maybe just because i was going through some odd times and needed to immerse myself in doing something. in this case music. more the latter i guess. ok so, the opening track is in a way the end of an era and the last one the opening of a fresher one. and the rest fills in the gaps in between those two moments i guess. i hate conceptual things anyways. i never know or want to know why i do certain things. concepts define something before it already begins its existence and trying to explain why is pretty useless. so here it is. the recording of a certain period of time in my tiny existence. with collaborations with jaw (dop), my brother atilla, who is also responsible for the artwork, and jonny cruz. by the time its out itll be a distant memory for me but hope it lasts a bit longer for anyone that listens to it

in 2009 the internationally acclaimed german director tom tykwer (perfume, run lola run, the international) supervised a film project in kenyas largest township kibera together with his wife marie steinmann. they put together a team of international film pros that each mentored one film student and helped them put together the movie soul boy. a story about a boy who has to go on a journey to rescue his fathers soul from a mysterious voodoo women.
the result of xavers score is a percussive journey reminiscent of minimal music from the 60s paired with african vibes but completely void of world music cliches. its closer to krautrock and steve reich than to the commonly shallow perception of indigenous music by first world movie directors. full of odd sounding kalimbas and plucky guitars, backed by heavy orchestral drumming and floating e-bows.

patrick rasmussens musical worldview goes beyond the adjectives that are continuously used to describe his music - eclectic, accomplished, experimental. he is a restless journeyman who, as raz ohara, has sojourned in collaborations with electronica luminaries such as apparat and luomo, and has penned solo work of electronic downtempo, acoustic, folktronica, and various points between. most recently, under the guise of the odd orchestra, he changed course again and crafted two albums, raz ohara & the odd orchestra and ii, both explorations of hazy, pastoral, avant-garde pop, grounded by rasmussens soulful and heartfelt vocals.

numan khan from manchester is a new artist for planet mu with an original musical style that mixes dubstep and grime influences with an idiosyncratic take on rhythm to great effect.
this four track ep showcases his styles from the a side with the lush melodic accordian and snes melodies of >race against time<, to the slower, disco influenced >photograph<.
the b side starts with >voodoo<, which combines grimey bass and strings with offbeat drums to odd, driving effect and finishes with >xx< which sounds like a long lost golden era 8-bit grime instrumental but with deft production tweaks and fx that keep it interesting and effective.

the loin brothers are long john saliva and dj silvio, two dashing farmers raised on strobe lighting, fuzz guitars and pork spare ribs. this is their second original single and follows on from heavy helmet, the mock & toof remixed single that caught the attention of aeroplane, ewan pearson and ivan smagghe with ivan featuring it on his live at robert johnson mix compilation. on this outing the loins have pruned, mowed, fertilized and watered their way through the studio to create the garden of vargulf. the original takes off with a thumping bass guitar, orchestral string leads, the odd desert wolf howl and a real guitar soloà with a guitar no less.

i know, i know… these tunes can really not be classified as house tools. martin beume, who also released the fabulous texgreen ep on outils, presents three unorthodox house tracks packed with the two winner components: weird melodies and mighty basslines. step right up! - the first cut on this release, gives you the feeling of being in a khole in the middle of a freak show carnival. catchy and odd melody snippets rotating diffusely on a never ending marching groove - absurdity in its most elegant form. slowly but steady – its a telling title! old school to the core, this track builds up steadily and adds layer for layer of jazzy samples until the tune is completed to an alluring dancefloor killer. flowing ribbon – what a lovely and sweet tune.

nice price deal !!! this is dasein, the opening potion of milyoos (aka tommy wilson) debut ep and the second release on subeenas new opit records. dasein attempts to grapple with existence, temporality and substance and what could be a more perfect description of these warped sonics- perpetual motion purely of the moment. multitude makes you feel like a tourist at an off-world bazaar, a strange landscape with a slug-bass bubble undercarriage and inquisitive wide-eyed synths. fayoh leads in with in a harold budd doing house piano before being pounced on by clipped vocal tics and odd blocks of cubist sound all underpinned by a funky beat and quite frankly its gorgeous. if there is a strand of coherence across the ep then its an almost exotic one- these are curiosities, virtual ships in bottles, they are not narrative pieces even if they are in constant motion. only two releases in and opit records is clearly going to avoid easy categorisation- milyoos debut is something to get mighty excited about and i await further transmissions with baited breath...

side a offers 2 tracks d-vote is the first. sort of downtempo, takes you by surprise and back an odd 20 years with this brilliant version on my mind is a little more upbeat. still attractively retro. side b the first track no more reminiscing of those vocal experiments in between rnb and house common to ny, london and detroit some years ago. it plays like a revival floor-filler. the second track on side b is got to have, more in the house realm, with heavier bass lines yet quite soulful by vocals and lyrics

we have never done a project like this before where the artists choose all the remixers themselves. but for the crazy italoboyz album >bla bla bla< we found ourselves not really knowing what to do. so instead of forcing our own ideas for remixers we went back to the source and let the artists run wild on the a&r. marco and fede commissioned all the remixers themselves. the producers they chose are a very diverse bunch and the vinyl 12inch takes a sampling of the best material from two very big underground names. on the a-side das kraus duo turn it a super jackin yet also very haunting rendition of >oh mio dio.< it sounds like pitched up chicago house meets demon days. on the b-side old school master dandy jack turns in one of the oddest records ever on mothership with some unusual sound design, voices and semi-dischordant note runs. super weird for the super weird! whatever you think of this odd lot no one can deny these remixes definitely carry the indistinguishable mark of that ever so quirky duo, the italoboyz

quality house ep with vocal & deeper tracks to keep fans of this great label more than happy..! dynamodyse is the deepest german we know and he is hailing from dortmund, usually only known for sausages and the odd good result of the local football team. as we dont believe in stereotypes and we have been listening to loads of superb teutonic house music these last years, we never questioned the association between the words deep and german and we just listened to the music. safe to say it blew us away.

elevation funk is no average b-side. elevation funk is a super sexy house groove that does the job right. deep and hypnotic analogue stabs slowly modulate to keep the bodies swinging on the dancefloor. odd synthetic effects and cut up noises just drip in overdriven dub-styled delays keeping the groove from getting style and providing delicious ear candy for the dancefloor. then about half way through this journey peter slowly brings back in a wet sounding hat pattern to bring this slow cooking bomb to the boiling point.
