tom hang is the solo electronic work of lobster theremin label owner jimmy asquith. despite being ridiculously busy either quaking dancefloors across the globe and flowing into the world a continuous catalogue of acclaimed electronic heat, jimmy has found time to follow up his ‘tidy bedroom versions’ release with more original tracks from the heavily dusted harddrive. ‘the new world’ is a sphere where pummelling techno burners teeter on the edge of freedom before winding and convulsing themselves into varying mutant zones that straddle the lines between experimental statement and tightly locked grooves to create a record of pure dystopian dancefloor heat. there is an odd and refreshing unity here within the strict, bare, functional, consuming percussion and the heady, playful, and freeform nature of hang’s melodic grip.

when la label acid test decided to start the leftfield imprint, avenue 66, they looked to new jersey house mystic joey anderson for an opening salvo. he delivered the modern psych-dance masterpiece above the cherry moon. now andersons back again with more of his beguiling dreamlogic. on if one cares, they act different anderson works with a lead that could score an unsettling 80s horror flick, eventually introducing his signature quicksilver synths and abstract, jacking drum patterns. peace there starts with the square-wave basslines and raspy hats taking us to a psychedelic far away place. on the vase, anderson reins things in, but even his bittersweet, relatively straight-head deep house tracks present an odd paradox. his music so alien and human all at once.

a very future times sounding future times from jeremy hyman. slighty odd, beautifully constructed and very friendly tracks that please us immensly. he first popped up on last years vibe 3 compilation and this is a full extension of that appearence. not much known on the man apart from hes part of slasher flicks with animal collective s dave portner. tip for the wise!

a few years ago i saw a documentary about the audio trickery employed in ww2. i was totally flabbergasted and soon absorbed anything i could find on the subject. artists and scientists alike cooked up incredible situations to fool the german army. inflatable tanks and trucks stacked with speakers projecting recordings of an imaginary reality were used to deceive and deviate the opponent. this odd scenario influenced me profoundly and drove me towards composing music that related these feelings. the project only collected dust inside my head until radio bongo heard of it and encouraged me to finish. sveinbjörn bjarki jónsson aka sonic deception

(rather than a mere dub, this is almost an entirely different jump-up disco track) and a bonus firecracker skit.

ritornell’s richard eigner & abby lee tee originally teamed up to provide the score for a collaboration with filmmaker andreea sasaran and illustrator katja seifert entitled »melting sphere«. sharing a passion for the combination of filigree electronics with playful timbres of diverse acoustic instruments and odd utensils, the cooperation of the two producers was a logical choice.
»melting sphere« merges subsonic bass, kalimba rhythms, accordion sounds and toy bells, all framed by eavesdropping recordings of abby lee tee’s cat, bathroom squeaks for five minutes of organic downbeat bliss.

after his exciting album elasticity on his own imprint elastic dreams, a sagittariun delivers the equally fascinating three track oxidize ep for german label couldnt care more. while heights is a stripped-down basic-channelish techno ride, rough, edgy and with a hint of hypnotic melodies, the title track heads in a quite different direction: still its raw expressionistic techno, but the flow is ever-changing, mesmerizingly shifting and twisting between hissing beats and enlightened synths. for the remix of oxidize golden pudel club resident and odd-house virtuoso rvds fires up the acid machine and does it detroit style, warm and cold, uplifting and melancholic.

modern love very rarely reaches out to artists outside of its immediate surroundings, it’s happened just a couple of times in the last 14 years. but there’s something about philippe hallais that compelled the label to ask him if he wanted to do something together. philippe has released music on a bunch of cool labels (l.i.e.s., the trilogy tapes, delsin, in paradisum), but hearing the first tracks recorded for lighthouse stories, it was obvious philippe was hitting on something new: a kinda weird slow/fast dance music that sounded like a footwork variant sewn up with an exotic production style that was impossible to pin down. these tracks eventually splintered off into different directions, held together by a strong sense of narrative and motion harking back to a teenage obsession with turntablism, detroit electro and ghetto house, and eventually juke and grime. although he’s spent the last few years focusing on more industrial dancefloor variants, for lighthouse stories philippe turned to these foundational influences, as well as his love of mixtapes and sound collages full of unfinished ideas, skits and experiments, all things that inform the flow of this new album. lighthouse stories captures a sense of nostalgia well, but is also a futuristic vision full of that exploratory, vibrant spirit that’s so hard to find in electronic music these days. frames of reference are hard, but in places it reminds us of the dusted swagger of anthony shake shakir, the acquatic drexciyan movements of ultradyne, a loose-limbed take on shangaan, and of actress at his most submerged. but ultimately, it’s an album made by a producer looking to his personal history while forging new ground, pushing ahead with little regard to convention and ultimately ending up with something completely unique: a kind of intimate journal rendered in bright colours and odd shapes.

after a couple of essential releases under the pseudonym “epiphany” in labels such as ahd or semantica, damian schwartz is back with his second full length album. an incredible piece of work highly influenced by detroit and ny’s house and techno sound.

for the 5th installment in the prrukwht series, spanish hardware icon eduardo de la calle returns to planet rhythm with his adept to the light ep. tr3b conspiracy serves as the opener which combines odd rhythmic arps and subtly placed drum sequences to make a somewhat uncanny atmosphere. on the b side we find ranchor will cut the mood which is a repetitive techno cut that should be useful for after hours. the doubt of the unknown (b2) has a somewhat foreboding title. it’s a fx heavy synth jam that uses oddball synthesis and nicely placed fx chains that evolve throughout.

james k is a stranger to obviousness. over the past few years the new york native has quietly honed her sound and peculiar aesthetic. equally organic and electronic, her sound is a combination of odd dreams, industrial beats and vocals, both incomprehensible and appealing, with a thick layer of glitter on top of it. james k is a concentrated dose of emotion mixed with sorrowful iciness, which in turn ties together ripped, broken, morphed and enchanted samples. james k stands for a fusion of visual and sonic elements, deeply rooted in conscious art practice and downright freak-out. james k creates a mythology of her own. pet, her first lp due out in early 2016, will be a co-release with dial and her own label, she rocks!

ark & pit spector continue their inspired journey with an extended ep full of groovy jams and absorbing rhythms for hold youth. the frenchmen have formed a potent alliance with a series of expertly-crafted, high-quality releases dropping over the last couple of years. on this new ep they go deeper into their sound explorations with five original works and a remix from their parisian buddy and hold youth member, le loup. first up, we go into bumping jazzy territory with ‘chauffage central’, a mesmerising cut with swirling pads, soulful vocal clips and a jaunty b-line. straight up after that, hold youth rudeboy le loup gives ‘chauffage central’ a funky little rework, throwing live sounding percussion, nubian vocal clips, trumpet parps and a pumping bassline into the mix which gives a totally different identity. the final track on side a, is a cheeky teaser called ‘petite ondée’. rolling out for just under two minutes the track has a muffled, jazz-esque feel to it with a warm rolling bassline and bright, sparkling piano keys. on the flip we kick off with ‘air conditionelle’, a lush, retro feeling with those oh-so-familiar heavy-hitting eighties snare licks. the bassline takes you to a new york city street and the whole atmosphere is that of an old school nyc neighbourhood, while a spoken-word sample adds a human touch just before the track comes to an end. ‘sub tropical’ goes a little leftfield with an unusual combination of sounds in tandem with a pulsating low end, occasional sax licks and punchy percussion to give it plenty of energy. ‘averse et contre tous’ closes out the ep with a slothish ride into the sunset – ark and pit spector show their experimental side presenting an odd union between blues samples, gruff electronic sounds and piano keys. another triumphant effort from ark and pit spector, in fact, some of the finest work to date. make sure you check it out!
