repress - already a well-established presence on the outlandish fringes of experimental, alternative and dance music, celebrated israeli duo red axes make a surprise left-turn onto phantasy with a three-track 12inch, sipoor. unsurprisingly, the results are as pleasingly out-there as the occasion requires. following on from last year’s self-released lp, the beach goths, sipoor immediately announces the axes’ uncompromising return to the front and centre of the dancefloor with the raw, provocative bad time story. brazen, brash acid triggers this particular tale, as red axes briskly modulate their way through a ruff, tuff but never less than musical landscape of 303s and 808s. sipoor takes a more gradual approach to building offbeat rave tension, featuring an unknown male using his native tongue to request some kind of house, some kind of techno and some sort of release. his wish (and we hope, yours) is the axes command, as the music goes deep before seamlessly unfolds around a throbbing bassline and a playful, familiar keyboard sample, beckoning feet to the dancefloor and perhaps tongues ever so slightly to cheeks. concluding the 12inch, teroof takes each of red axes signature ingredients - deeply rhythmic ebm-inspired drums, spiralling electronics, unapologetically odd vocal distortions and reconstructs them amid what sounds like the monaco grand prix, as high-velocity motors speed past the soundscape, kicking up some serious dust.

following on from the impressive opening statement from modern manners, the second installment from the hitherto unknown outfit sees the sonic remit reaching out to other influences while retaining that poised lounge attitude that made the first record so instantly endearing. research is a dub track in essence, sporting ample space in the mix, the odd conga roll and sparse chords calling out into a field of reverb and delay. can maneras is a more shuffling kind of smooth jazz that aligns with the classy licks of st germain and the like. serate cosmiche finishes the ep off on a melancholic tip that puts the synths at the front of the mix for the first time.

hailing from wellington, aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud, scent is a newcomer to the scene but long time gc of modern hypnosis. his first sighting featured a track ‘devils dread’ on indigo movement’s 5-year digital compilation december 2017. heaving at 140 beats per minute, ‘trax’ creates a certain energy similar to early jungle riddims. chopped percussion, giant synth stabs, weighty driving kicks with underlining sub bass and the odd flute build the track to a halt before commencing it’s minimal technoesq break down. ‘just a dream’ a rooted scentimental dub which takes you deep into a place amongst your rem sleep with sparse whaling strings and swinging percs. scent debut solo release. one to watch.

dont is excited to welcome dublins another alias with a perfectly unsettling 4-track ep that veers from 2 step through techno and out the other side, truly bringing something new to the table.this producer has been busy carving out a definite sound of late and that sound chimed so much with the original ethos of dont, that he was immediately sought out and invited to record an ep. his productions bang, whilst managing to hit a delightfully off-kilter tone which is a tricky combination to get right and we really hope you’ll enjoy this special release.

one of the deepest reaching projects from the multifaceted vibraphone stable resurfaces for an extended trip through ambient sonics that marks possibly the most daring departure on the esteemed italian label to date. the harmonious tones undulating throughout sketches from space are instant soothers, taking the odd cue from techno but defiantly beatless and meditative. its a surprising addition to the long and winding vibraphone story, but also feels like one of the strongest steps forward the resurgent label has taken since returning to the fray. just try sinking into lagrangian point l4 and you ll see exactly what we mean.

the shortest connection between the past and the future leads through the music of boston 168. drawing inspiration from both classic and contemporary approaches to the acid techno sound, early nineties rave culture and the throbbing pulse of the now, sergio pace and vincenzo ferramosca have carved out a niche for themselves which over the past four years has become a musical microcosm of its own. having released a slew of records on such labels as involve, attic, odd even and dustin zahn s enemy, the italian duo now presents its most cohesive musical statement thus far on ellen allien s bpitch. on the three tracks of »drops in heaven«, boston 168 seamlessly mold together lysergic acid lines with elements of nineties ambient techno and a rhythmic groundwork that is as thrilling as it is intricate. »cosmic tribe« translates its idea of universal togetherness into a nerve-wrecking groove punctuated by complex percussion work and a subtly building acid line, while »drops in heaven« uses a booming kick drum as base for an emotionally driven exploration of sonic textures. the psychedelic »straight to light« nods to nineties pioneers like emmanuel top, showcasing ferramosca and pace s talent for creating musical depth by ingeniously bringing together a few select elements to greater effect. these are tracks that relentlessly head towards the unknown final frontier of what techno can sound like in 2018, while not in the least neglecting the rich tradition that they draw from.

the unstoppable most excellent unlimited charges ahead with the ninth in the heralded mr. k 45s edits series, with this latest edition the most intriguing to date. deep in danny krivit s voluminous collection is a 7-inch acetate rescued from the records left behind by master mixer and dj walter gibbons when he passed away in 1994. the mysterious plate, simply labeled -1, 2, 3,- was custom cut by gibbons for his personal use in the early 70s when he and a partner operated a service called melting pot sounds that provided one-off copies of otherwise unobtainable imports for nyc disc jocks. most of the 20-odd known releases on melting pot sounds have been identified, but the true provenance of -1, 2, 3- has remained elusive. the tune is a screaming, instrumental disco delight, with aggressive clavinet riffing broken up periodically by raunchy sax. for this most excellent unlimited issue, mr. k meticulously transferred his unique gibbons acetate and further intensified the already propulsive track with a few choice edits of his own. not to be outdone, the flip side focuses on a ferocious percussion break that has previously only been available on a very poor quality 12-inch single. -sweet summer suite- by love unlimited orchestra has long been noted for its intro, a concoction of conga, cowbell, cuica and cabasa that drives dancers wild with its relentless, intense groove underpinned by a booming bass slide. making its 7-inch debut here, the groove has been extended and teased as only a master could do, complimenting the a-side and creating a powerful dj weapon. as always, this most excellent unlimited single has been mastered and pressed to the highest standards with loud dj usage in mind, and will be available in extremely limited quantities

limited to 500 copies on heavyweight 180gm milk white vinyl, individually hand numbered in gold pen. chicago based producer icytwat, dropped his debut project, milk, in may of last year. milk showcases his eclectic style and range of influences, drawing from: odd future, three 6 mafia, 90s r&b and neo soul, early cash money production, and miami bass music, describing the resulting sound as “audio pastel.” divine council rapper $ilk money appears on two tracks including the projects highlight, don juan. other features include l.a rapper indigochildrick and atlanta singer kyeoshin. as well as handling production duties across the record icytwat picks up the mic and raps on the tracks without features, proving his talent on both sides of the mic.

four tracks of ny-flavoured boogie and house goodness - quality is the key word from copenhagen based music for dreams and here is another home run. willie graff splits his year between dj residencies in new york and ibiza. in this new outing with studio partner darren eboli, the influence is, as the title suggests, clearly ny-based. over only four tracks, the pair manage to craft a stunningly comprehensive exploration of the essential elements of dance music. opening track -love flight- staggers into a lush string-driven groove that recalls the glory of metro area meets wally badarou vibes. minimal yet playful, it lounges somewhere in the depths of the house tradition, calling on familiar sounds while throwing in odd details along the way (harmonicas?). it takes both skill, devotion and a sense of humor to pull this track off, making for a strong opening. -moon tan- lingers on a metallic hook that drags you into a plethora of percussion followed by a rubbery soft baseline. dubby key work would suggest this was a new wave band jamming at compass point, while the icy chill of the xylophone transports you into 80s italo territory. -second sun- pulls out the bag of boogie tricks, relying on a firm but humble baseline and smattering drum machine claps. nile rodgers-style guitar licks guide us onwards into a well-orchestrated jam that builds up and breaks down with perfect timing while dreamy chords reach for the sky. -first light- keeps the groove tight while dipping over towards more balearic temperatures. steeped in a watery atmosphere and gentle organic percussion, it focuses in on a trance-inducing arpeggio that lulls you in to the swaying badarou-style synth swirls that intercept it.

try love was originally recorded by norma jenkins and pitched to motown who passed on the track (this version only survives on acetate). master of the girl group herb bernstein picked up the track and recorded the version you hear on this 45 which for whatever reason failed to make a dent until it was picked up first by the belgian popcorn scene and later the northern scene, demand far outstripped supply and this rare 45 became very expensive. a haunting, odd and beautiful record to this day the members of the sparkles remain a mystery.

lp theres been an air of hypnagogic mystery surrounding acid tests sublabel avenue 66 from the start. joey andersons oblique, prince-inspired incantation above the cherry moon set the tone for a label thats sound that has found beauty in the furthest recesses of the dance floor, in the murkiest decay of kick drums and rave stabs. fitting then, that the first album on the imprint comes from trux, an artist who has chosen to reveal nearly nothing about themselves. following a cult classic mini-lp for office recordings, orbiter bears out the anonymous producer as a master of liminal, conceptual dance music. orbiters ten tracks have a vaporous, shape-shifting quality, threatening to topple over into full-on kick drum bliss or vanish into ambience. opener, with it, moves from heady ambient rush to skeletal piano, while blinko and roys garage spell out a hazy memoriam for the uk continuum. forlorn pianos ring out amongst the field recordings, excitable toms and jungle bass all softened in the enveloping gauze. orbiter positions trux as an unknown auteur who puts evocative world of tone and echo into dizzying motion, content to watch from the wings. track list with it orbiter blinko roys garage third glow in my world my row odd u agoma

quite possibly the last truly sublime album ever recorded by os mutantes – a set that’s a bit more rock-oriented then their first few, but still pretty revolutionary overall! the group have expanded to a quintet at this point, but haven’t yet falling into the guitar-heavy groove of later years – and rogerio duprat is working with the group on arrangements, although mutantes member arnaldo baptista is handling production chores himself. odd styles still slide into the mix as the tunes roll on – creating that great sense of surprise that makes their best work so great, and keeping things fresh even when a bit more straight ahead! titles include a reprise of -baby-, one of the group’s early classics – plus -portugal de navio-, -virginia-, -tecnicolor-, -el justicero-, -lady, lady-, -sarava-, -it’s very nice pra xuxu-, and -top top-.

re-issued again, with new liner notes. a wonderful, rare record wrapped in a mysterious yet playful ambiance. or maybe it s just the impression that the japanese language often gives me. suiren is an odd jazz-fusion-wave tune that sounds like its boiling, waiting to burst but somehow manages to stay in control. like the nervous tick of a leg fidgeting under the table of a restaurant on a first date. yasuaki shimizu is a japanese composer, producer and saxophone player born in 1954. he worked with ryuchi sakimoto on certain arrangements, with the south korean artist nam june paik on art+sound installation pieces and even dj towa tei (of deee-lite fame). suiren was released in 1981 and is the opening title on the sought-after kakashi album and is my personal favorite on this overall brilliant record. it weaves behind new wave, jazz, fusion, ambient and experimental music.

after solemnly closing out the spc-series in 2016, jeroen search hands in his second ep of the year for figure. carrying his signature style, these tunes embody the live-recording feel he is known for, perfectly executed and arranged in clean-cut layers. both tracks on the a-side feature big and beefy beats, their generous sub-range creating ample space for the juxtaposing elements to effectively slice through, whether it be the penetrating bleeps of deduced or the piercing rides on interval. things get bumpy on the flip when the rugged but undeniable groove of steady pulse firmly stands its ground against repeated onslaughts of flailing percussion. the jolty rhythms and tinkling loops of endless circles may seem like it being the odd one out, but unexpectedly merge into an intricate mesh of sounds, making for a most memorable closer to this jam-packed ep.

tranquilizer is a kind of music that is created at night. the time when sleep did not bring relief and the clock is standing still. 4 o clock in the morning is the hour that is heard in every odd beat and the dirt glued to the sounds was always in place.

label head honchos sleep d are back with another production out of the jackal studios, located in melbourne, australia. red rock (iv mix) kicks off the release, a mid-tempo mover originally performed live at inner varnika 2017, re-imagined in the studio taking you back to the alien-like surrounds of rural victorian landscape bookaar. bunyip beat reinforces the mood, forcing your mind to explore the flow of the odd-ball rhythm. flip it over and you have almost 8 minutes of hypnotic aural madness on sandman, a real late night outdoor atmospheric finish on this diverse release.
