having co-compiled two albums, the real sound of chicago and the real sound of chicago and beyond for bbe, dj and producer mark grusane steps out of the shadows to present the real sound of mark grusane.
a highly personal selection of modern soul, disco and a little touch of boogie, these rare tracks have all been respectfully edited, chopped up or extended by mark himself. apart from the odd private vinyl pressing, or occasionally handing an edit over to close friends and djs such as fellow bbe artist sadar bahar, mark has never before made these tracks available (despite the throng of people waiting around to ask each time he finishes a set).

re-issued again, with new liner notes. a wonderful, rare record wrapped in a mysterious yet playful ambiance. or maybe it s just the impression that the japanese language often gives me. suiren is an odd jazz-fusion-wave tune that sounds like its boiling, waiting to burst but somehow manages to stay in control. like the nervous tick of a leg fidgeting under the table of a restaurant on a first date. yasuaki shimizu is a japanese composer, producer and saxophone player born in 1954. he worked with ryuchi sakimoto on certain arrangements, with the south korean artist nam june paik on art+sound installation pieces and even dj towa tei (of deee-lite fame). suiren was released in 1981 and is the opening title on the sought-after kakashi album and is my personal favorite on this overall brilliant record. it weaves behind new wave, jazz, fusion, ambient and experimental music.

one plus one/indecisive is the 7inch release from the debut ep by melbourne band the do yo thangs a collection of sensual slow jams and bumping future soul dominated by rich, four-voice harmonies. one plus one is equal parts performance and programming, drawing from a broad palette of live instruments and electronic sounds. at the front, hugh and audrey alternate lead vocal duties, supported by harmony singers maddie otto and tiaryn griggs. backing them, the guitar sound is classic soul but the plethora of synthesizers and 808 kick drums is definitely not, nodding equally to vangelis or hiatus kaiyote. the more you listen, the more intricacy is discovered. the writing uses jazz elements and odd rhythmic devices, but it s all tucked away - theres nothing that intrudes into the foreground or interferes with the song s abilities to speak to an audience

electro shock aims to reflect the electronic scene today in france and the rest of the world Ð, a constantly evolving scene and the ultimate soundtrack of our times and their fascination for rhythms and dancefloors. the first volume extracted the absolute best from the flowering and vital scene of 2012 from confirmed artists m83 to newcomer nina kraviz.

dj diamond is 24 year old karlis griffin from the west side of chicago. he has been producing music since the age of 13 and djing since 20, heading the -flight muzik- clique of footwork producers. you might recall his two tracks from our -bangs & works vol.1- footwork compilation of last year. in addition hes also released several mix cds in chicago, but this, his first international album showcases his unique style of footwork music. dj diamond is a unique producer with his own distinct style and an unusual ear for unexpected sonic and rhythmic combinations within the footwork template. often he thoroughly edits samples into tiny trance-inducing, techno-like stabs. combining this with a penchant for neon synths and loose, broken drums (that are often more effect-laden and freeform than those of of his peers) and you have a sound which has an intriguing, deeper, dreamlike feel. the breadth and quality of his production is clear when you listen to this album. take opener -rep yo clique-s woozy drawling synths and tribal tom patterns next to -speakerz n tonguez- with it-s snapping snares, minimal, repetitive voice samples and martial, detailed drum work. then a track like -torture rack- which is like grime in outer space: a minimal bassline and some samples from a computer game, while a bass kick stumbles at half time, swarms of percussive detail giving it drama. its a brilliant exercise in wonky tension. the extraordinary -decoded- comes across like a kind of amalgam of trance and prog rock bombast at 160bpm while -wreckageÕs- high pitch saw noise is like a strange metallic bird-call, over light cymbals, gabba-like kicks and metallic claps. -digimons- harmonic microedits could even be an snd track transported to chicago. finally the albums closer -i choose you- rolls out over a heavily edited and processed soul sample, its drums rolling off at odd angles to almost seasick effect.
