crown of brahma are charles stella, nicole willis & daniel wyatt. the songs “an angel on my shoulder” & “and i’ll be free as a bird” were recorded in the period between 1995-1997, originally set for release on an lp on rawkus records in 1997. this album would have followed the release of the group, repercussions, album charmed life (pony canyon, 1997). nicole willis was the lead singer / songwriter of this group. charles stella & daniel wyatt worked together at temple of soul in new york city, where some of charmed life was also recorded. these two vocal tracks have never been commercially released, however were heard by tommi grönlund of sähkö recordings and leftfield, who requested to work with ms willis in result. the two tracks have been remastered in 2017 by charles stella.

icelandic techno veteran yagya enjoys a release on x/oz that celebrates both new and old material. the tempo is noticeably ramped up on -one weak light- but never at the expense of that dark and mysterious icelandic hue. -existence is weird- is no slouch either, but yagya shapes out his atmospheres with such a refined touch that you barely notice how quick the tracks are running. -a very long daydream- is a gorgeous ambient track dug out of the archives, while -getting closer to an unknown goal- sees the re-release of a track yagya released as rhythm of snow back in 1999.

austrian imprint luv shack records is opening up yet another chapter in 2018 by welcoming irish house and techno aficionado and misfit resident andrew johnston aka moodtrax and his own-brand of super warm and brooding sound to their stable. the perfect illusion ep opens up with never can get away, a steamy & dreamy cut that sucks you right in to its lair of thick pads and trancy sequences, which are contrasted by a carefully programmed synth bassline and a stomping house beat. the title track immediately evokes early chicago warehouse jam feelings, with bass sequence, detuned chords and classic drum patterns all oozing of old analogue roland machines. the meticulously arranged percussions section and a set of eerie strings and pads make this one definitely stand out from the crowd. running number starts as a no-nonsense house track, carried by a beefy unisono bassline and a 16th note heavy drum pattern, yet it transcends into 80s territory with the help of a deeply emotional chord progression that might just make you forget you re in a club. berlin duo longhair give running number the luvremix treatment, really digging deep into that chord progression and building a melody and synth-bell infused italo-house track around it that should make this years festival crowd weep and rejoice alike.

amidst destruction on the mainland, the two locomotives minør and pionér transported wagons full of rock and gravel to the icelandic seaside during the construction of the reykjavík harbour in 1913-1917. the two metallic giants ushered in a new age in iceland. however, soon after construction ceased the two trains were parked and have never driven&#8232,,,,,,since. minør is on display near the waterfront and pionér stands lifeless in an outdoor museum on a hill. they are the only trains ever to have graced the icelandic landscape. now they only serve to remind us of the grandeur of a bygone future. at the dawn of the 21st century – again, tumultuous times – we allow ourselves to dream of new minørs and pionérs capable of pulling the tremendous weight of the past strewn all around us and putting it towards constructing an ambitious future.

back in 1962 when this, their third album was released, the group consisted of smokey, ronnie white, pete moore and brother and sister bobby and claudette rogers. while he had yet to be featured in the billing by name that came in 1965 robinson’s photo was top and centre of the lp cover. the ten songs featured barely amounted to 27 minutes of music, but what i ll try something new may have lacked in quantity it more than made up for in quality. and the reason was clear. six of the ten songs stem from robinson s pen five solo efforts and the sixth, closing track this i swear, i promise , a co-write with janie bradford. let s savour an album that, as one perceptive critic put it, features the miracles at their early best... as young, eager kids just starting out, filled with optimism, youthful exuberance and enthusiasm, long before record-company politics, favouritism and restrictions changed the group forever.

the italian dj and producer viels is the perfect example of a promising artist who has earned his stripes in the scene. his first contribution to dynamic reflection was a single track on a va two years ago, then a solo ep on the nursery last year and now it s time for his first well-earned vinyl called distrophism. although his sound has matured over the years, he has never compromised as far as his straight forward sound goes. circular, the a1, is the best possible example of that. the continuous drive keeps it going for well over seven minutes, without ever becoming superficial or dull. the b-side extends to other sides of his musical spectrum by making use of more drone-like, hypnotic elements. beside these three convincing originals, spanish heavyweight svreca jumps in for a remix of circular, completing the variance of styles. needless to say, this new release, proves that viels as an artist and this ep in particular, are forces to be reckoned with.

rather than rely on their usual full band, live performance, one-room live single recording session, the making of ‘dragonz’ was a departure for the apples. a multi-studio project spanning three continents, they assembled new instrumental tracks based on loops created in the studio and presented them to a wide-ranging selection of vocal collaborators to complete the picture with, and applied this method to the capturing of longstanding live favourites as well. the concept of a “vocal album” was implemented on non-vocalist songs as well, treating the omnipresent turntables’ sample work not as the central element to the band, but rather its frontman. though containing disparate influences, guests and production methods, ‘dragonz’ is undeniably apples, might be their most focused lp to date, and it is certainly their most middle-eastern. elements of the region’s indigenous genres have always been present in the band’s work, but never has their influence been as pronounced.

the inimitable seth troxler is next up on his own influential label with something of a milestone release: his finally physical ep is a precursor to a compilation album, this is then, due in may this year. this is then will be a typically unique celebration of seths 10 years as a major force in the europe underground scene. it will draw a line in the sand on the first part of the michigan born artists recording career before he embarks on the next chapter. this preceding ep features four productions that were never properly released and they serve as a taster to the forthcoming compilation, with two originals and two remixes, one of which comes under seths lesser used alias, thrill cosby.

this is essential tremor’s second and final album of all time. the band broke up after the recording of this record but still managed to play one final show before fully breaking up. the show was one of the most brutal things nashville, tn has ever witnessed and lead singer cole k was banished from nashville forever following the performance. essential tremor’s work never quite fit in with the rest of what was occurring in nashville around the time these tracks were recorded, but we re sure that this tape will fit right in with the rest of your collection.
