prophet ist ein funk-musiker aus dem underground der san francisco bay area. bis zu diesem jahr stand sein name lediglich auf einem obskuren album namens „right on time“, das 1984 als privatpressung bei treasure records erschien. peanut butter wolf, der gründer von stones throw, war sofort angetan. „es klang ein bisschen wie prince oder the time, aber dabei sehr lo-fi, wie in einer kammer aufgenommen“, jetzt kehrt prophet zurück. sein neues album „wanna be your man“ wurde von mndsgn produziert und klingt gleichzeitig nach retro-hit und zukunftsmusik. prophet wurde 2013 der tour-opener für snoop dogg & dam-funk.

the son of a radio dj who introduced him to the world of record collecting, harris grew up with music, progressing from violin, to high school drum line, to the jazz studies program at virginia commonwealth university. he also continued working with other instruments and developed an interest in sampling. his development as a producer at first, without a computer or sampler came first learning to replay samples on the drums, piano, bass or guitar. dj harrison finds himself inspired by local musicians in the richmond scene thats as diverse and nonexclusive as they come. among rappers, producers, punks and bluegrass bands, he falls within reach of an expansive pool of musicians to collaborate with. he lives and works in jellowstone, a house turned recording compound occupied by his band mates in butcher brown, a garage punk jazz funk group.

mister mellow moves further away from the synthesizer-heavy sounds of the recent washed out releases and more band-driven sound of his work on iconic labels sub pop in america, and domino in europe. on mister mellow, greene draws from the experimental collage techniques of musique concrète and plunderphonics artists such as the residents. combining styles as diverse as free jazz, house, hip-hop and psych together with interlude-esque voiceover samples, often pulled from anonymous youtube vlogs, he creates a busy, chaotic, and caricaturish mix that mirrors the claustrophobic, hyper-stimulated psyche so familiar to young adults. as he continues to carve out his innovative sonic identity, influenced by the world around him but unafraid to buck trends, it’s fitting that greene has partnered with legendary hip hop label stones throw records, long a home for beat-loving musical rebels. his approach to releasing music is every bit as individual, too: in an environment where compiling singles into an album format or working with a single video director are the norm, greene has chosen to commission eleven different artists to bring the visual aspect of his fully-realised album project to life. on mister mellow, washed out steers clear of emotion to empathise with the minutiae of the world around him. ive been much less interested in sentimentality and emotion for the past couple of years, says greene, in some ways, i think its a reaction against getting older and having more responsibilities. maybe i’m just nostalgic for a time in my life where i could just relax and block out the world for a moment. though mister mellow is an intensely personal album, its ideas and observations speak to the lived experience of so many young adults, an experience that we come to see as both funny and sad.

jardín is gabriel garzón-montano’s debut album, out january 2017 on stones throw records. gabriel garzón-montano’s formidable skills have come to fruition on his stones throw debut. “this album came out of wanting to make music that reminds people how beautiful life is and how delicate their heart is,” he said. “i ve always wanted to make music that is healing, comforting, and funky. i named the album jardín hoping for it to create a space for healing when people put it on.
“a garden is full of life, growth and beauty,” gabriel said of choosing that unifying image as the title for his new album. “it makes me think of green and white and all the colors as they appear in different flowers.” that vivid spectrum bursts forth on jardín itself and the album contains references to fruit of all sorts, sour mango, juicy tangerines and sweet peaches.
from the heartache and aching vocals that float over the dusty drums of “crawl” to the stutter-step thump of “bombo fabrika” to the high falsetto he nails on “octave,” garzón-montano proves himself to already be one of 2017’s biggest breakout talents.

mndsgn, born ringgo ancheta, grew up in south new jersey raised with gospel music at church, b-boy culture, and his older sisters favourite artists like swv, tlc and mariah carey. experimenting with beatmaking in his teen years, he befriended fellow stones throw labelmate knxwledge and the two formed the influential klipmode collective along with devonwho and suzi analogue.
mndsgn’s music flourished when he moved to la, quickly catching the attention of stones throw, who released “yawn zen”, an lp of complex beat creations. mndsgn then toured the world, co-founded akashik records & tapes, and provided the beat for “sweeney song”, a high profile collab with underground superstar danny brown.
“body wash” is a full set of realised songs hinted at on “yawn zen”. influences here include the likes of early solar records material, leon sylvers iii, kashif, and dave grusin. mndsgn adds, “i was also digging back into some early 90’s r&b sounds and started really imagining what it would be like if i had mashed the two eras together.” this mashup works magically, a clean synthesis of anthems (“cosmic perspective”), romantic reflections (“ya own way” / “guess it’s all over”) and mndsgn’s r&b proclivities (“lather” / “vague//recalibrate”). “a soul record that plays with nostalgic elements in a positive way. think about it as a box of crayons for you to draw emotions with.”

boleros valses y mas is the stones throw debut from frankie reyes, the alias of gabriel reyes-whittaker who also records as gb (gifted & blessed). comprised mostly of popular latin standards from the mid-twentieth century, the source material was reworked by reyes under an approach he’s dubbed “technoindigenous studies” which explores his puerto rican heritage through modern electronics. the inspiration for boleros valses y mas formed when los angeles radio collective dublab invited gabriel to participate in an event themed specifically around latin american modernism. “i thought about how i might capture the essence of this theme using my instrument of choice, the synthesizer. what came to mind was to cover some of the classic latin american compositions that i grew up hearing around me and have grown to love as i’ve gotten older, most of them in the bolero style but a few in the waltz, son, and even mariachi style.” by using audio-to-midi and sheet music-to-midi processing gabriel has recontextualized these popular tracks easily overheard while visiting any of los angeles’ predominantly latino neighborhoods with a single oberheim synthesizer. by removing the lyrics, the emphasis remains on the melodic, harmonic and rhythmic aspects of these classics, many still sung by latin american artists today

hailing from osaka, japan, and owner of the daytripper label, seiho is a new producer set to join the leaving records family with his debut full-length release. collapse is a bright, colorful, twisting and adventurous ride. too angular to be boxed by genre, seiho is just as comfortable exploring big rave (-plastic-) as he is improvising with free jazz (-the vase-). very few samples were used in the making of the lp, with seiho opting to capture his own sounds via field recordings - like the bird chirps on lead single -peach and pomegranate- and -exhibition- - and using live instrumentation like piano, trumpet, and drums to set the stage. with elements of the future pop of pc music & sophie, the footwork of teklife & dj paypal, and day-glo of rustie and hudson mohawke, seiho melds disparate ideas and moods into a wild and imaginative sonic landscape.
