reissue of an eye for an eye by byrne & barnes: a true westcoast/aor masterpiece, produced in legendary music city muscle shoals (alabama) and originally only released on japanese label climax. in 1981, robert byrne followed up to his 1979 album, blame it on the night, by teaming-up with multi-instrumentalist brendan barnes to record this rare westcoast classic. if they never recorded any other music together, both display incredible music career and went on to produce for many famous artists such as pointer sisters, patti austin, earth wind & fire, phil collins, brian mcknight, or boyz ii men to name just a few.

basil & rogers is a sleazy, california disco duo made up of heru (dj) johnny basil and body rogers. basil, a multi-instrumentalist, long-time record collector, and energy healer is a man that s been making music for a long time under many different guises and in many different styles. heru avenger (acid/psych rock), non stop (electronic/free jazz), baast (kraut rock/jazz funk), and kandi jones (slut rock) are just a few of his projects, past and present. most of this music has been around for the entirety of the 90 s and 2000 s without being heard because despite basil s outspoken appearance (described by many as looking like iggy pop s twin brother and would never be caught wearing a t-shirt no matter the location) he s very quiet about his musical output. body rogers is also part of the non stop group and is a master of electronics and engineering. on the basil & rogers project the two have made a disco 12- that is influenced by classic-era dance music while still being completely unique and far from conforming. it s crazy, it s sexy, and it s sleazy. tune in .

keeping with the rough release rate of an album every couple of years, prime numbers label boss trus me is back with his fourth full length, planet 4. featuring nine cuts of intergalactic techno and once again marking a considerable sonic evolution for this acclaimed uk artist. never one to do the same trick twice, david james wolstencroft uses his latest album as a vehicle for his own interest in deep space, physics and dark matter. it is those subjects that have occupied his mind in recent years, and those subjects that inform this brilliantly otherworldly album. where previous lps have variously been funk and soul heavy, or openly analogue and physical, this one is a more subtle and supple techno affair that is as cerebral as it is seductive. starting with a monologue that suggests that man has already landed on mars, 1979 is a cut that immediately places you somewhere in orbit. spooky synths and sci-fi sounds are eerie and atmospheric and very much set a perfect tone. from there, there is slow, elastic and unsettling mood music on the unexplained , deep and insular techno on dark flow and trippy dan bell style minimalism on ring round heart . the second half of the lp touches on chunky dub, manic and melodic grooves. this is a coherent statement that holds together conceptually and musically. as well as providing plenty of dynamite for the more discerning dance floor, planet 4 is also a delightfully detailed affair that will work just as well on headphones late at night.

having finally woken from our deep winter slumber, team fancy human shuffle in through the door of 2016, in need of a shave and a coffee, clutching the newly minted test pressing of the first full release from london duo and co-founders lucatwana. the normally work shy combo deliver to you fh003, or under it s more catchier moniker, city droids. if they d have got it done quicker, we might have been able to cash in on the stars wars related hype, but never mind. anywho, city droids takes the form of three originals, beginning with the uplifting funk of city fucking, moving through the tougher and darker grind of droids on roids and ending with a nod to detroit with nobody knows. pleasingly, we also have a fancy human favourite tigerskin on remix duties, with a smooth, driving, hypno re-imaging of droids on roids that hits the nail firmly on the head.

the grand opening of the new label serie obscura europa sampled artists , a various artists 12 ep serie to present darkwave bands that escapes a little from the usual electronic sound of the label. on this volume 1 we will find a 90 s ultra classic darkwave hymn of the dissolved german band behind the scenes, uncomprehensively never pressed on vinyl to date. on the other hand, the polish solo act undertheskin shows with 2 cold but extremely rhythmic tracks why his acclaimed debut mini album is one of the most exciting and interesting proposals of 2015. all tracks have been analogically remastered specially for this vinyl version.

fantastic voyage’s autumn 2015 release of soul for dancers proved so successful, that we didn’t have to think twice when lois wilson (mojo, record collector) asked if she could do it all over again. it turns out that there were plenty more classic sides in her dj crates, drawing on that rich seam of early soul and proto-soul rhythm & blues, of the sort that would have packed the dancefloors on the sixties club scene, or has been embraced by subsequent generations of club soul diehards.

in the place of the eternal blazing sun there exists an underworld, a dark and cold space of interlinking caves and dank corridors. occupying the subterranean land is an army of worker drones, busying themselves with a never ending series of tasks, both laborious and mechanical.

watergate affairs is a brand new offering featuring residents, regulars and affiliated artists that have developed close ties to the club through the years. over the course of four tracks, jimi jules, lee jones, la fleur and david mayer & sebastian voigt perfectly display the sound of watergate. diving right in is jimi jules and he hasnt let lost a step, picking up where he left off with his stellar bogota ep earlier this year by churning out a burner. 6% is rooted in a heaving low end groove while hypnotic tones spiral around a modulating lead that never lands in the same place, ensuring a twisted dance floor venture.

tired of the politics of the minneapolis funk scene it’s rumored the group has taken refuge in tokyo’s late night disco scene. their brilliant and cheeky song writing combined with incomparable musicianship will be sure to make a bold statement in the modern funk scene this year. “hot touch” brings bass that goes oops upside your head and down your back into your butt crack. we’ve all been burned before, but never like this. brilliant cut followed by the super deep two-step stunner “ain’t gonna last” on the flip. perfect soundtrack for the end of the party when you look around and yourself, “which one of these freaks is going home with me tonight?” out on star creature.

continuing a sublime run of form for the label, the fourth outing on the lopasura imprint, is yet another classy trio of heady, analogue machine laden masterpieces. opening up with “out of the fog’, the familiar acidic arpeggio and crisp hits we’ve grown to love from benedikt frey, dance unwittingly along before being opened up by long, cinematic pads drenching the track with an emotion and grandeur so synonymous with his music. complimenting the a side, the looming intent ‘wolves’ adopts from the off evolves quickly into a driving, hypnotic and beautifully crafted piece that’s a true heads down, eyes-shut techno battle weapon. rounding off the ep on the b side is the exceptional ‘lights’. an unsettling, caliginous whir of industrial drones balances the tribal, percussive elements almost depicting a lost ship crashing over the swells of the ocean as it clings on to futile hope of finding the lighthouse. it meanders and threatens before an incredible synth hook ebbs in and takes over momentarily, before calmly simmering as the storm passes. never before has love pain sunshine and rain been more perfectly encompassed.

the second tape on legowelt s nightwind records cassette series. through his remote viewing powers danny wolfers channeled the music of saab knutson of faroe islands circa 1993. 60 minutes of nordic ambient with a disturbing undertone of dark melancholia with vague notions of distant happiness. saab knutson is a man with many issues, but on the faroe islands there is no time for issues. to stay of sound mind, saab plays his synthesizers in the few spare hours he manages to find, unmistakenly influenced by faroe s spellbinding landscapes and grim climate. though danny has never been to the islands he has a definite puzzling calling to them, a luring force, so to speak. hopefully he will sell enough saab knutson albums so he can fund an expedition and find out more about this mysterious destiny... played on yamaha dx100, roland jx3p, alpha juno 2, emu 16 bit digital sampling keyboard. ruby metallic cassette tape in luxurious faux plastic case
