medical records returns to france for the reissue of the very rare and sought-after video liszt lp. ektakrom killer was released in 1981 and had never had never been reissued or repressed. the artist behind video liszt was xol, a french journalist and musician. commanding a multitude of analog synthesizers, moog modulars, an ems vocoder, and an apple two computer, xol crafted a very diverse album with styles ranging from sci-fi synth soundtracks, prog, space disco, and all the way to more accessible electropop.

for the first half of the twentieth century, ellis island stood as the gateway to america. for some twelve million people, it was their first encounter with the land they hoped to call home.

following releases on detroit underground, nachtstrom schallplatten, planet rhythm and blueprint records, gotshell releases his first ep on atrophic society. the colombian aficionado has been making waves across the world for his uncompromising take on the darker side of techno. his new ep ‘quarkcima’ is no different, with a thick slice of bass-heavy machine music made for late night body moving. ‘quarkcima’ follows a bleepy lead with layers of bass, building to a satisfying and tasteful crescendo, which steers clear of the tropes and uses frequencies to their fullest. it invokes a dark and foreboding atmosphere like a creeping black fog. first on remix duty is xhin, who takes the bleepy synth lead and twists it into a heavy-but-funky robotic jam, stark and cold on the surface but with plenty of heat underneath. jeff derringer takes the reins for the second remix, wielding the original parts masterfully into a dense, bassline-driven triplet groove that takes the vibe up a few notches. finally, label head vohkinne adds punch and percussion to his charged and clanging remix, which rounds out a fierce package in style. ‘quarkcima’ is four cuts of essential techno that will never leave your crate.

it took me a couple of years get invited to christophe de groot’s (aka circadian rhythms) homebase, and a couple more years to dive into his sonic archive. but time tells and basic moves 02 is what came out. the two tracks were recorded at earguard studio in brussels around 1996, at a moment when his interest was moving away from club music towards other golden musical horizons. “frequency” is a macro tech-house track in mid tempo.
i’m super happy i could archive it on wax because we almost fucked up the master dat tape by blowing up the player during a marathon listening session at his place. we had to open the device, unroll the tape across his house (full of records) and fold it back into the mini dat cassette. after a few hours and twenty metres of tape, the problem was solved and the tracks archived: “a dose of authenticity at a time of post-counter-cultural stagnation”. “house speaker call” originated in proto-techno forms. christophe never sees techno as a type of music but as a process. as a producer, collector and deejay he always dives deep into authentic forms of electronic music. deg’s antic personality shines out in the middle of the harsh beat-driven electro/techno track like a hopeful melody passing by on its elliptic orbit. tune your cells into his vibrations and get ready for these two timeless club tracks.

its certainly not easy keeping up with tuccillo. the relentlessly productive producer has been constantly firing off dancefloor bombs on labels as respected as visionquest, one, holic trax and 8bit for years, but never before has he turned his hand to an album. finally, hes decided to do the right thing and give us a deeper insight into his sound, and he s doing it on his own unblock label. fans will get everything they crave on a part of 20, as tuccillo indulges his dancefloor sound and keeps the quality level as high as ever. there are some choice guest turns from vocalists on tonight, feeling hot and again, but throughout the album tuccillos commitment to the stripped down, emotive house groove remains constant.

a belter of a double-sided monster. welcome to the brilliant herbie hancock with the always in-demand slinky groover stars in your eyes on the much coveted 11.21 -special disco remix-. this is quite simply one of the smoothest disco rides you will ever take with a production made in heaven and a vocalist supreme with gavin christopher taking it to another level. featuring an extended percussion break from the fantastic sheila e, this a very different mix to the original album version and was never widely circulated at the time. so another nice rare gem. as double-siders go, this really takes some beating.

the second part of the jacob f. desvarieux anthology on endless flight brings three more productions of the fabled french zouk veteran with roots in guadeloupe.
the song “sika” by georges décimus, bass player of desvarieux’s band kassav, features outer-national synth works driven by salsa-like percussions and sweet steel-drum melodies, dancing around the seducing zouk guitar chords of desvarieux. a truely moving psychedelic zouk gem, that is for the first available on vinyl only since its release on georges décimus’s solo debut mini-album “la vie” in 1983.
the second song “avèou doudou” was firstly released in 1985 and was written by the martinique born zouk star and former kassav keyboarder jean-claude naimro. his tune spreads feathery synth-laden caribean boogy vibes, enlarged by his tempting voice and more zouk guitar magic by desvarieux. the third gem comes from the zouk pioneer patrick saint-éloi, listens to the name “do bay lan main”, was never re-released since 1984, features the former kassav singer saint-éloi on the microphone, electric piano, organ and mini moog and gets once again softly heated by jacob f. desvarieux’s enchanting zouk guitar virtuosity. as already on the jacob f. desvarieux: anthology pt 1. release, japanese producer for special affairs kuniyuki delivers a unique edit. his version of “sika” is made for eternalness dance floor moments. the steel drums dance with more magic than in the original. propelled by spaced out synth-sounds, echoed drums and the discreet guitar chords of desvarieux, kuniyuki’s version of “sika” is ready to be a mind-expanding summer hit on all open minded dancefloors around the globe.

a selection of forgotten demos by band hymn, active 1981-1984, with multi-talented musician and post-punk pioneer lucas trouble (†2016) in the lineup. dition of 400 numbered copies. hand stamped sleeve. includes insert with photos, artwork and liner notes. all the tracks were originally self-released as demo tapes in a very limited run. their first work, coming home, was published in 1983, and the second one, too many lies, in 1984. both of them were distributed by the band themselves. shortly after, they released a more widely known 12” ep, tired (nova express, 1984), with a different line-up and noticeably more rock-oriented. definers of a totally genuine sound, hymn were coevals to the underground-synth-post-punk movement that surfaced in france in the early eighties, easily recognisable today via cult labels such as bain total and invisible/scopa records, with stunning releases by experimental references like ilitch, philippe doray or incontinents.
