so, after a little break we’re back with a new release. this time we’re joined by the multi-talented production powerhouse that is swarm intelligence (aka simon hayes). landing heavy with four bruising techno cuts that each find their own unique way of taking your head off, ear017 is a bumpy journey through darker club flavours. ‘flatlands’ opens things up, reminiscent of the type of marching, granite-heavy brum techno of old – this is minimal in construction but maximum in its impact. move forward to ‘ground up’ where demonic, dissonant keys take the lead above a rattling midrange that sounds like a corrugated roof ready to fly off. opting for cleaner, elastic drum patterns on ‘tingla’, hayes swaps tense for dense, with a loud take on steppy techno, that’ll please fans of some of blawan’s earlier work. ‘skitz’ starts out an a more dub tip with a wailing, paranoia inducing hook and snaking rhythms, eventually joined by more hard-hitting broken kicks, leading us comfortably into oblivion.

berlin based zehnin keeps up a fine release schedule by asking blawan to remix its inaugural ep from lucy. once again focussing on experimental, ambient and techno sounds, it is another fascinating release. blawan has been in his own sound world for years now. releasing on the likes of hessle audio, hinge finger and his own ternesc, hes made brutalist, heavily textured tracks, big room tools and dark grooves with freaky sound design. its all helped to make him one of the most interesting producers of the day, and here he shows another side to his sound. first up is his version of ‘the hermit, which is seven spacious and mysterious minutes of creeping pads and implicit rhythms. dark but inviting, its stripped back, hollowed out techno that manages to be hugely absorbing and menacing without any clearly defined drums. on the flip is the equally beguiling ‘the high priestess. deep, subliminal kicks set the tone as groaning riffs, train-track percussion and distant, tortured pads all slowly hypnotise. it builds in pressure and creeps you out as it locks you ever further in. this is evocative dead-of-night music that says a lot in impressively economical ways.

honey butter launches in a flurry of feel good deep house from lesser known producers with a keen ear for straight up groovers. swales kicks the record off with the melancholic tones of pushin away, while ari bald sidles in with the wistful sample chops of hot 2 cold. sabie blanc takes things to even dreamier heights on the b-side with the harp-embellished romanticism of musique d ascenseur, and then eben rees finishes the party off with some seriously funky licks on dirty dishes. all in all, it s a formidable salvo of likeminded deep house jams that should work its way into the bags of all manner of soulfully-minded spinners.

psyk kicks off with a tom based space out remix of lucid. heavy soundscapes and pads are layered over the fine rhythm of toms. henning baer takes care of aporia with a weird metal loop kinda vibe and a straight forward beat rhythm to keep the speed.
twr72 gave colloquial a groovy treatment. with minimal, filtered and slightly oldskool elements they changed the original parts into a little killer. talking about minimal, on the flipside rod delivers greatness on lucid with his cut and slide technique. neznan closes the ep in style, because his style is impeccable. when you thought you’ve heard it all, neznan jumps in. an experimental take on erudite is what you get. and like always, there are hidden messages in his music.
