ten years on, intrepid crate-digger samy ben redjeb unveils a new treasuretrove of vodoun-inspired afrobeat heavy funk crossover greatness. right from the laceratingly raw guitar fanfare which kicks off les sympathics’ pile-driving opener, it’s clear that african scream contest ii is going to be every bit as joyous a voyage of discovery as its predecessor. and just as you’re trying to get off the canvas after this one-punch knock out, an irresistible afro-ska romp with a more than subliminal echo of the batman theme puts you right back there. ignace de souza and the melody aces’ “asaw fofor- would’ve been a killer instrumental but once you’ve factored in the improbably-rich-to-the-point-of-being-nat-king-cole-influenced lead vocal, it’s a total revelation.

gifted culture collective kicks off with zinnigheddas jam berlin, first 12” of a series of three releases recorded exclusively during improvised jam sessions. gifted culture wants artists to breath and to represent in music the contemporaneity that surrounds us. gifted culture catches that very moment on tape. this is an itinerant music project, to highlight the context as influence on the artistic process. during the first session two thou, autre, xinner and demo gather together during a sunday night in kreuzberg with an electric bass and a bunch of synthesizers. there they start to tell us how they feel the “now”.

(180 gr vinyl, pearl-stripe label artwork!) the eps lead track dalmatina kicks things off, taking the listener on a 9-minute melodic trance-esque journey that boasts a sublime evolving arrangement encompassing, a solid four-to-the-floor rhythm, intriguing percussive elements and a distinctive arpeggiated synth melody that takes centre stage.

villalobos and argenis brito getting trippy... to coincide with their 8th year, toitoi gear up for their biggest release yet with ricardo villalobos & argenis brito teaming up under ‘pol & pox’. ‘el malekon’ kicks things off in typically trippy fashion with loose percussive groove and a subdued bassline line whilst disembodied vocals swirl in and out of the mix. ‘rikileaks’ conjures up more aquatic joy, this time with a more pronounced male vocal being the centre point to another beautifully meandering 11 minute ride.

returning with renewed force after henning baer’s unbreakable debut lp, manhigh’s sixth release comes from a name already well-known in techno circles. sciahri is the italian producer whose luminous 2014 debut on the celebrated ilian tape’s itx experimental series immediately announced his presence, followed by another on the label and two eps for the highly-rated black opal offshoot of opal tapes by 2016. he was simultaneously occupied with his ambient-leaning unknot duo with emanuele porcinai, better known as wsr on samuel kerridge’s contort label. 2017 saw the launch of his sublunar imprint and a tripartite release from him featuring a more streamlined sound than the craggy broken-beat style familiar from ilian tape. sciahri’s manhigh ep opens with ‘demur’, showcasing his most dour, industrial sounds, scraping metallic highs against the unrelenting impacts of reverberating kicks and subbass drone. ‘forbidden’ holds its forces more in reserve, the cycling, mechanical soundscape maintaining a spacious, ambient aspect, worked against a broken rhythm more implied than explicitly stated. returning to full intensity for ‘reliance’, he tightly coils the core elements around deftly-deployed percussion and a militaristic, pounding rhythm in the bass and kicks. henning baer’s reinterpretation of ‘demur’ saves little from the original apart from its overriding tension, instead adding a layer of nearly-tonal pads and an unremitting acidic bass throb pushing forwards inexorably.

seductive and cinematic soundscapes between ambient, drone and indie-neoclassical music: these are the best words to describe hior chroniks style and his new album released on 7k! in december 2017. 7k! is the sister label of !k7, dedicated to cutting edge musicians and composers in neo-classical, modern composition and experimental music. on this limited 12?, hiors music is reworked to melodic club tunes by budapest based & uprising producer gnork & new yorker lauren ritter on the flipside. gnork recently had his tune u included on lones dj kicks & has been releasing on lones label magicwire, as well as unknown to the unknown, black venison or crow castle cuts. lauren ritter is an active member of brooklyns underground, organizing events with resolute, playing coveted slots at institutions like output and cielo, and opening for respected talent such as raresh, moderat, thomas melchior, zip, kate simko to name a few.

mihai popescu kicks off a new label, steppin motion records, with two of his own brilliant tracks. the romanian artist has been a key part of the scene since 2012, releasing on labels like soulsity, rora and bass culture. he has a slick electronic sound that is here for all to here on these two new cuts.

steppin motion is a record label based in paris and managed by swoop. it aims to promote music as an art, as something beautiful that gets your body and soul in motion. this first ep is in two parts, showcasing both sides of the label: the first part is the most dance oriented, whereas the second part will be more soul / beauty oriented. the amazing artwork comes from vesod, who is an italian street-artist painter from turin.

selfsuficient is first and is ten minutes of slippery house music with lovely chords and melodies all making for a warm and infectious groove. it is colourful, loose and rhythmic stuff that oozes a futuristic sense of soul. neasteptat is deeper, with rubbery drums and woodpecker like sounds all weaving round each other to cast a spell on those who hear it.

these are two terrific tracks that connoisseurs of minimal house are going to lap up.

eshu, the production collective and record label from nijmegen are back with their next offering. their 12th release is a various artists release that features blm, joburg and steven siwalette alongside label members ivano tetelepta and jocelyn abell. it comes on the heels of teteleptas absorbing dub techno album, senang, and is another high class offering. nijmegen based siwalette is first, previously contributed to the label as part of sys. his stragglers is a sparse but atmospheric track with industrial drones and slowly turning drums taking you through a desolate factory late at night. his second offering is alien encounter which is just as it sounds - a spooky, unsettling bit of cinematic sound design with menacing bass and icy pads all growing in loudness until they eventually consume your mind. lastly on the a-side, uk producer and fear of flying label boss blm lays down a skeletal groove thats embellished with beautiful, yawning synths. scattered little details and fx making this a cavernous piece that encourages your mind to wander and get lost. on the flip, jocelyn abell and ivano tetelepta cook up a heavyweight, mid tempo bit of dub techno with sharp hits and rolling kicks lulling you into a trance. last of all, the emerging j?burg picks up the pace with a perfectly chiselled bit of rock solid dub with looping drums and icy hi hats sinking you deep into its midst. this is an excellent ep that packs in a range of fascinating sounds for both the home and the club.

uncage founder marco faraone makes his second appearance on rekids with a massive vocal cut entitled ‘on my way’, featuring a remix from 50weapons and hyperdub’s addison groove. the italian techno producer had an active year touring in 2017, dropping only one release on tenax recordings. however, 2018 is already proving to be one of his busiest on the production front, with releases appearing on rekids special projects, on edge society and his own label uncage, not to mention forthcoming appearances on gigolo and avotre. he now returns to rekids with his biggest sounding record yet. with its infectious vocal, rolling kicks and off-beat hats, it is undeniable that ‘on my way’ is destined to become one of this year’s most recognisable club tracks. on the flip, bristolian producer and swamp 81 affiliate addison groove has produced an intricate remix featuring a cacophony of percussion as a stuttering low-end joins chilling synths. finally, faraone concludes the package with a ‘dub acid rework’, losing the vocals whilst incorporating heady 303 licks.

having turned heads with shedbug and laroze already, flux expands its modest operations to include a new white sublabel that kicks off in fine style with d b. -subtleties- is a gorgeous minimal house jam shaped out by snaking rhythms and amorphous ambient tones - the consummate spirit animal for your dancefloor trip-out needs. -synergi- has a more typical shuffle, but it s no slouch in the head-melting psychedelic tone department. -splash- completes the package with a swerve into more explicitly broken beat territory, using a similar sound palette but placing the emphasis on tricky programming to create a divine slice of electronica for the more rhythmically adventurous heads out there.

taking inspiration from music, nature and the elements that surround them, jukka hänninen and mika hanka aka shuffless have quickly garnered the attention of many within house and techno since making their production debut in 2016. written at the vislampi studio, located in ruutana city, finland, using a combination of hardware gear from the likes of roland, korg and arturia, here we see the duo reveal their latest work with four diverse and expansive cuts set for release this spring as they return to syncrophone s in-house imprint. opening up the ep, hänninen and hanka fluently introduce chi , a complex and evolving cut that effortlessly fuses deep, rich chords, and delicate, skipping hi-hats, before easing into the flowing groove of lahti with its jazz-tinged melodies and heady tones guiding the production into lighter territories. on the flip, nime Ñvailla introduces a matrix of hazy textures amongst crunchy percussion licks and dubbed out atmospherics as the duo return to deeper, darker realms, before title cut puollaskel punctuates the package in classy fashion, laying down gritty analog percussion, resounding kicks and subtly programmed nuances to conclude an excellently worked ep.

kicking off vivod s new pheasant series and making their debut on the label, uni.omni are a glaswegian duo comprising of mwx and wave energy converter. inspired by feelings of duality and the unpredictability of our dynamic world, uni.omni respond with challenging dark electronic notes, driven vocals and expansive percussive backdrops. their tracks emit contradictory feelings of chaos and calm, motion and stillness, frustration and excitement, whilst using the energy and turmoil of big city life as motivation for their first ep. acceptance resistance kicks things off with an experimental, cavernous foray that shifts to the rhythmic, subliminal undertones of metaphysical lives. both sequential self and viral dread- are attuned to empowerment, exacerbated by the strains of the modern world, with strong vocals reiterating the need for resilience in the forgotten generation.

after releasing a successful archives vol.1 in 2017, italian dj and producer luca vollaro, aka electrorites, is back again with the fresh follow-up archives vol. 2 via his own label structure records. the ep is a hurricane of industrial stained energy, demonstrating a rather free and open musical inspiration and direction. the thick, dense grinding groove define the four tracks. it starts with archive 004 which features powerful repetitive sub-kicks and ends with extremely strong bangs just as if the track is exploding. distorted and mixed mechanised sounds style ctrls remix resulting a very dark adrenaline charged techno track. in archive 005, the sequences and bass loops are stunning and the last-minute banging drum shots will leave you wanting and dreaming for more. to finalize the ep, endlec remixes archive 005 where the listener fully absorbs all the harsh petite details

klangkeller records, recognized for modular sound experiments, catchy beats and percussive rhythms, has done it again with audiokerns third release a personal way ep. the ep delves into experimental, abstract and electronica grounds. audiokerns sounds are stimulated by the external world and their atmosphere, with a drop of the basic essence of electronic dance music. these 8 tracks are certainly a confirmation of it. uncanny valleys live drum is fresh and magnetic alongside dissimilar jingles and swishes which positively balance. wired system is abstract, with a dark added vocal at the end which brands it as a powerful track. differently, under the same sun is entirely melodic, with beautiful dreamy waves that genuinely make you touch the sun. it continues with the night of glory. its duskier moodier vibrations and a few words add an exciting and dark temper that still fits purely within the ep. element of trance and hypnotic place are all about bringing the listener into another dimension. it alienates and hypnotizes you from reality through the quantity of small alterations and sub kicks within the sound. to conclude, dont forget the animals is mysteriously percussive, its like different animal roars assorted together, its gorgeously confusing.

for over 4 years, david coccagna aka chaperone has been a constant part of great circles, as musician, art director, and muse. with snapback balaclava he once again fully embodies all of those roles, delivering three inspiring tracks, selecting his remixers with specific attention to their musical histories, and designing his cover art. across the a-side, chaperone scrapes away at the grit – personal grit, the grit of anxiety, and philly grit. these are meditations on loops, and loops on meditations. each one appears on the surface to be a brief quote, but time dilation takes over, and minutes later we discover that chaperone has welcomed us into and back out of his own healing moment. like chaperone s p o n d release grcr-009, the b-side of snapback balaclava is a great circles extended family affair with a trio of diverse remixes that expose and exploit fragments of the chaos chaperone so carefully contained. hitoshi kojima thrive reinterprets pulse feels swells beating with relentless syncopated rhythms and synth lines that hang like massive string drones. m//r lays down a signature percussion ensemble palette, zeroes in on otherwise peripheral elements of grit neglect, and then deftly navigates sea change with both. matt korvette and sean mcguinness of philly punk band pissed jeans open up the pit and finish the story, taking femur baseball bat to its literal and brutal potential with monstrous vocals and kicks.

astray is the sublabel of away, berlin.having showcased his more experimental on-edge techno design with his first two astray releases, discrete circuits control zero ep marks his most straightforward installment yet. the title track gets down to business without detours by growing into a powerful drum avalanche that combines bone-dry kicks with a frenetic atmosphere - point-blank: peak-time techno for the dance floor. ed davenport completes the a-side with a remix from his dj and production alter ego inland, who adds more muscle to the lower frequencies in order to retell a darker tale unfolding a cutting groove. although both tracks on the flip pick up the pace and intensity, they venture out into less dense, more emotional directions. dimensional equivalent embodies a no-nonsense rollout that builds an icy groove with a kick drum that, only blended by alerting, dream-like synths, never lets up. conjugate works with similar vocabulary while repeating bleep sounds, that are buried underneath the pounding grid, shift the focus towards both the varied percussion and the narrative progression.

long serving irish producer derek carr continues to enjoy a resurgent career following his appearances on for those that knoe, now stepping up to love notes for some of his most effervescent house jams to date. -sidewinder- is a sprightly, detroit indebted house workout pitched at peak time, while -stepping out- trips into classically informed techno for the back room crowd. -search for intelligence- is a great example of how to execute sweet natured electro, and -indigo- ditches the kicks to twirl into more of that motor city flavoured machine soul magic for the mind.

its been a year and a half since we last saw la fleur grace watergate records with a proper ep, having been featured on remix duties for sashas trigonometry and her contribution femton to the celebrated 15 years compilation. so her brand new outbreaker ep arrives just in time to curb any impatience you might have waiting for her signature blend of house and techno aesthetics fused with modern production techniques that sets her apart from her peers. la fleur kicks things off with a wild heaving bass line and crisp, distinctive organic claps on ‘devils sigh setting the tone for the hypnotic groove that soon turns into a high energy burner of explosive bursts and an incredibly unique lead guaranteeing an absolute hit. it only gets better when one of the hottest acts on the scene, tuff city kids, lend their talents for a remix and turn devils sigh into an analog heavy, future-retro banger thats as different as it is the same as the original, creating a perfect alternative to the already killer original. wrapping things up, la fleur takes it a little slower and deeper with outbreaker by utilizing lush organic percussion and washed out guitars to build a tune that will be the anthem for early mornings, open airs and beach sessions alike. we couldnt be happier to have the first lady of watergate back at the controls and we think you will agree.

unterton kicks off 2018 sideways with three tracks of high-octane electronics by mark. 0-160 bpm in 15 minutes. previous eps for a colourful storm had a conceptual focus: the destructive effects of tech start-ups on berlin’s cultural landscape. sound-wise, they paired frenetic, experimental d‘n’b with musique concrète. on his unterton debut, mark continues further down a path of dark and psychedelic beat science. at times tranquil and hypnotic, other times charging forward between cracked whips and whiplash left-turns. “comedy is the dog that walks out of the room when you call its name.”

the finnish tropical troupe maajo is back with a two-track ep. in contrast to the afro-balearic sound of their 2016 debut tropic of tulli, the new defo / mansaba ep is a step in a deeper and sometimes darker direction. defo kicks off the ep with a driving 5/4 rhythm. reminiscent of mark ernestus’ ndagga sounds, it is a tribal tune with maajo’s signature ethereal disco elements. trevor deep jr.’s version straightens out the original’s unconventional time signature and focuses on a four-to-four beat and plenty of berliner dub. the remix is a solid dancefloor tool, traversing the original like a train making its way through a dark rainforest. the b-side is entirely covered by mansaba, a 14-minute long journey into inwards. this studio jam, recorded largely live, is a wild mixture of polyrhythmic sequences, krautrock guitar licks, equatorial forest percussion and violin synths. the trip starts slow and soothing, sneakily picks up pace and keeps grow and growing, eventually exploding into a full-on tribal dance.

relentless apparel wax never misses a beat and is back at it with aplwax003, the 3rd chapter of the saga. the release is made up of 3 tracks, 3 distinct parts of the same engine, 3 proper dance floor bangers. the ep kicks off with a compelling broken-jazzy beat, with its groovy breakdown and reprises and its funky vocals its that one track youll need to shazam on the spot. the 2nd tune will have you right away when youll hear those tribal rhythmics and hypnotic vocals that drive it till the end while the 3rd is the typical one youd call a peak time track.

nyra continues to shine on his own canoe label, making the most of the creative freedom to show every side of his musicality. -take my hand- deserves to be huge, displaying a devilish instinct for a simple disco loop, a powerful vocal and a whiff of fist shaking new york house pressure that will leave its mark long after the club kicks out. -life is trippy- switches stance entirely with a snappy boogie-indebted jam for lighter moments. -on & on- meanwhile summons a rowdy detroit techno backbone that, paired with the bold disco licks, calls to mind the kind of fare dj bone can so expertly drop. -falling for love- maintains the fusion of rough and smooth with equally brilliant, party-starting results.

mikkel metal returns to copenhagen’s echocord this may with his new mini lp ‘just enough light’, comprising six originals from the danish artist. copenhagen based producer and dj mikkel metal has been a beacon of light in the danish electronic music scene and further afield for nearly two decades now, with the dub techno imprint from his hometown, echocord, being the predominant home for his output, whilst also releasing material on cologne’s kompakt, tartelet, semantica and avant roots, a telling sign of the quality embodied in his work. here though we see mikkel deliver a mini album concept in the shape of ‘just enough light’ and opener ‘awake’ perfectly sets the tone with emotive, dynamically unfolding atmospherics, tension building bass drones and spiraling dub chords subtly easing us into the project. ‘bregnan’ then stirs in some classing dub-techno tropes with billowing stab sequences, lumpy subs and off beat high hats carrying the hypnotic groove for six and a half minutes. ‘jech’ then strips things back to an almost beatless amalgamation of murky chords and modulating synth whirrs. opening the flip side of the release is ‘include’ which embraces a brighter feel via ethereal pad swells, jazztinged synth melodies and bumpy 909 rhythms before ‘konkin’ edges back into the eerie, brooding aesthetic with bubbling echoes, broken drums and menacing bass swells at its core. ‘restore’ then closes the package on a stripped-back vibe, laying focus on an ever- eveolving singular dub chord to ebb and flow around thunderous subs, kicks and bright hats.

following the success of last years kunta kinte 2017 riddim, brooklyn-based label and collective dub-stuy add a new installment to their popular dancehall inspired series with a fresh riddim from in-house producer dj madd, featuring international vocalists from jamaica, spain and bermuda. jitta riddim is a brand new production from dj madd, a sturdy yet spacious riddim carried forward by a lilting melody and guitar stabs that are anchored by slapping snares, dub flourishes and a rolling bassline. this is a weighty but energetic riddim with the dancefloor in mind. bringing the riddim to life are a trio of vocalists representing the roots and global expansion of dancehall and sound system music. spains sr. wilson delivers an anthem in the making with zapatillas, a song dedicated to all the sneaker heads worldwide who like to sport fresh kicks when they hit the dancefloor. singing in his native spanish and english, sr. wilson shares tales of daily shoe addiction around a catchy refrain that name checks the best known brands. his blend of reggaeton-flavoured autotune and kicks geek outs is sure to resound loudly around clubs worldwide. backing him is jamaican veteran deejay cutty ranks, a man whos been lending his distinct flow to productions for over 30 years. on double trouble cutty speaks to the daily realities of life on the streets and the ills keeping people down, warning of the trouble that awaits those in charge. wrapping up the release is bermudas troy berkley who aims his vocal rifle straight to the orange-skinned resident of the white house, spitting rapid fire lyrics about the deteriorating state of things in 2018 america. lace up your sneakers and get ready to move and chant with dub-stuy’s new riddim.

seb zito has been one of the main movers for fuse london since the labels inception and his good to me ep continues the producer/djs accent. take no one kicks things off, its 90s tech-house influence being worn on it s sleeve with it s no nonsense b-line driven groove. so good to me delves somewhat deeper, pads and synth work offering up warmth for a blissful 4am ride. hit ends things with an altogether quirkier affair.

we are more than pleased to present the new counterweight artist, our new family member directly from aarhus/denmark. we adopted antn and his synthesizer army right after listening to his kickass techno. his brutal kicks, cut up voice samples, relentless hi-hats and aggressive synths convince from the very first second and you will easily understand, why we ve chosen him. to round up this release we are glad to have this massive rave mix by under black helmet... a dancefloor destroyer.

american producer dustin zahn readies the next release on rekids special projects this april with four vigorous cuts entitled take the throne. dustin zahn has been flying the techno flag for two decades, releasing on labels like rekids when not helming the berlin-based enemy records, a label which has released music from artists like fellow us techno stalwart ambivalent, arts boss emmanuel, and innervisions producer yotam avni. zahn is also respected for train wrecks, his weekly podcast series inviting members of the house and techno community to discuss a wide variety of music and industry related topics and stories. the release opens with the thumping kicks and sci-fi melodies of take the throne before rolling into the dubby tones, infectious claps and rattling white noise of decorum. the atmospheric nameless midnight then follows, packed with echoing synths, tantalising effects and a twisted vocal sample that weaves throughout, arriving at the final track subtle flex where escalating synths meet syncopated percussion.

following the massive buzz a round the labels last release (voted the record of 2017 by some 400+ international djs and tastemakers on bill brewster s dj history podcast/poll (2017 furtive 50), hobbes music kicks off 2018 with a heavy slice of warehouse techno backed with deeper electro flavours, a second double-a-side 12inch outing by the anonymous dali. you may remember dali (nb all caps in the spelling) released a debut 12inch around this time last year. support came from ben ufo, laurent garnier, domenic cappello (sub club), john heckle, chris duckenfield, the revenge, tom findlay (groove armada), sean johnston and xdb (among others) and a repress happened swiftly, with laurent garnier and avalon emersonalso supporting most recently (on wwfm and at berghain, respectively). dali has a passion for analogue synths, abstract, hypnotic dance music and all things psychedelic. don t bother looking her up on the net, social media etc. dali is eschewing all that, to let the music do the talking for now
