unterton kicks off 2018 sideways with three tracks of high-octane electronics by mark. 0-160 bpm in 15 minutes. previous eps for a colourful storm had a conceptual focus: the destructive effects of tech start-ups on berlin’s cultural landscape. sound-wise, they paired frenetic, experimental d‘n’b with musique concrète. on his unterton debut, mark continues further down a path of dark and psychedelic beat science. at times tranquil and hypnotic, other times charging forward between cracked whips and whiplash left-turns. “comedy is the dog that walks out of the room when you call its name.”
unterton introduces an artist who’s already renowned for his work within informed circles but yet to be discovered by most: berlin-based new yorker phase fatale debuts on unterton after strong releases with respected labels jealous god and aufnahme + wiedergabe and six well-received club appearances at berghain.
after recent records by kobosil, ∑,,, (summe), etapp kyle and nitam, unterton continues its path of presenting young faces with a new ep by somewhen. with his null ep the berlin-born and grown producer expands his musical repertoire, connecting to the tonal range of his live and dj sets in and out of berghain.
25 jahre alt, geboren, aufgewachsen und beheimatet in berlin, aber zuhause im club. nitams debüt retold ep (u-ton 06) setzte 2015 bereits den ton – und hier sind wir nun also, drei katalognummern und 14 monate später mit seiner zweiten 12- auf unterton. dieses release verfolgt eine ähnliche linie wie schon sein erstling: neue, variierte sonische motive mit einem frischen gesamtklang. trotz seines noch jungen alters zeichnet nitam erneut sein interesse an dance music der späten achtziger und frühen neunziger nach, präsentiert sich geschult an klassischem detroit house und chicago acid house, ohne sich aber selbst auf eine bestimmte klangpallette zu limitieren oder gewisse musikalische erwartungen zu bedienen.
the third u-ton release enters the merry world of post-disco and proto-house, mirror ball fantasies, baby powder dreams and rays of sunshine. manhooker are guiddo (music) and mavin (vocals) who were brought to the attention of ostgut ton by nd_baumecker. wheels in motion and club anonymous both got the club remix treatment by rotciv (the rimshooters, mister mistery) who delivers clever and respectful dance floor adaptations without destroying their peppy pop appeal.
gerd janson (head of running back) and phillip lauer (dj, producer and 50% arto mwambe) step out of remix mode and release their first 12 inch of original tracks as tuff city kids. the ep is released as a hand stamped yellow label in a green generic paper sleeve and is the second release on ostgut tons new sublabel unterton.
with u-ton 06 we welcome berlin born and based nitam as a new artist on unterton. his first release as a producer is a collection of tracks that were all created during various recording sessions in the last year – the retold ep immediately gives a clear impression of nitam s versatile production style.
kobosil offers up the fifth release on ostgut tons sister label unterton. after his self released debut ep >-------< a signature sound becomes apparent on the equally obscure titled >- -----< second ep, a style that places himsomewhere between noise, techno and the verve for sobriety
on the fourth unterton release the black dog present a new sound somewhere between house and techno that the black dog call darkhaus. the original version of * council flat emptiness* is an infectious, futuristic, disco-tinged version of a progressive dancefloor workout bathed in strings, mellow melancholia and heavy bass. this is preceeded by a straight to the point stripped down version that multiplies the hypnotic elements of the original. on the b-side a 9-minute-30-something remix from luke slaters l.b.dub corp project drives the original into classic slater territory where techno and groove marry and electrify each other.
ostgut ton launches a sublabel that will feature remixes of tracks that have been released on the motherlabel ostgut ton, unterton will also release other ostgut ton related or befriended artists and one-off projects. the releases are presented as stamped white labels with track details only. tobias. makes the start of the remix series with two of the tracks from his >leaning over backwards< album, the a-side sees efdemin remixing the title track >leaning over backwards< and on the b-side ricardo villalobos and max loderbauer give >girts< the remix treatment.
