tireless producer, tronic boss and top international dj christian smith here steps up for his first release on plus 8. over the years christian has offered up a high volume and high quantity of techno inclined singles for myriad labels (bedrock, systematic, 100percent pure, soma), so it only makes sense he now finds himself on one of the scenes most reliable outposts for such material. the two track ep kicks off with house is house which is, as the name suggests, a little house-ier than the flip, but still deals in plenty of heavy bass weight and slick repetition. the devil is in the detail filtered, dark voices, rattling cowbells, washes of white noise synths and long, thin, forward looking pads - all of which are married to a mid-tempo groove. the more forceful indulge me then follows. taught kick drums start immediately as claps and subtle synth stabs swell in volume until they eventually fill out the whole airwaves. squirming behind are thin and icy steel lines until the first drop when the deliciously bouncy groove sets in proper. far from aping the usual detroit and chicago tropes, christian smith has once again crafted two classy dance floor joints that are not only exquisitely produced, but that bare all the usual hallmarks of christian smith, one of the most consistent producers in the game.

ander-traxx is a fresh label operating out of glasgow with the intent of releasing righteous underground house, and although mainly a platform for the labels founder alex-ander to showcase his own productions, ander-traxxs remit also includes the presentation of unknown talent for future releases. for this first release, alex steps up to the plate to deliver because of me, followed by 3 remixes from artists born and raised in glasgow. the original kicks things off with its intro of glacial pads and jittery hats, before quickly delving into a seriousely deep groove brimming with melodic layers. although because of me gives a strong nod to the recent developements of producers like omar s and kyle hall, it undoubtedly has the hallmarks of an alex-ander production, his unique arrangements coming to the forefront while still complimenting the crisp percussion that drives the track forward. carlos nilmmns (co founder of the formidable solab production unit) mix is a much more off-kilter and submerged affair. nilmmns plays down the epic quality of the original and adds chugging rhythmics and sweetcured piano work for a lesson in divine repetition. mesumas feedback mix goes in for the dancefloor attack, not surprising for a gentleman whos previous work has seen releases on hardgroove and seventh sign. rolling toms and a booming kick meet aquatic vocal samples and spectral harmonicas, and will still please those partial to deeper sounds. last up to give because of me the rework treatment is meschi (lunar disko, lux, snuff traxx), who mixes his chicago influenced analogue stylings perfectly with the source material. stripped down crescendos build up to a euphoric drop, and meschis elated melodies bring another twist to this excercise in deep funk. because of me is one of those rare e.ps that works just as well in a non-club enviroment as it does on the dancefloor. with this warning shot, alex-ander will surely be capturing the ears of many in 2012 and beyond.

after the successfully aras startup from the label owners andre galluzzi and dana ruh we are now presenting a hot follow-up from our friend, well known hessian johannes heil. the a side consciousness is a massive 12 minute dancefloor killer starting with a nice synth loop and some heavy kicks. after nearly a half the track turns from a warm hypnotic break into a real peaktime monster. b side track pure starts a little bit deeper with sounds that let us yearn for the sun. a very nice package for the summer.

ben sun kicks off the ep with some glorious grass roots house vibes. after releases on wolf music and under the shade melbournes francis inferno orchestra s make their debut for vr with classy, lo-slung but urgent take on deep house. legendary australian dj hmc joins in with some p-funk flavoured starr trax and last tyson ballard with some warm, spacious sunday-vibe piece of house music that is my house . touched by the magic that is linkwood for the mixdown, it s an infectious piece that draws a fitting end to a superb ep. another great release on this cool label.

after his last single asset 001 and releasing his distance track on dogmatik records, stojche returns with the second release on his own solo tangible assets imprint delivering another four cuts, whereby we witness his consistency in putting out a must-have quality works. the 1st track on the a side is called you & me. podium techno tune where the 909 drums and the fat baseline interact perfectly with musical theme. stojche starts off with the pad lines, building them up with various chords, synth swabs and dubby layers that strike in perfect timing. this one is real immersive moody groover. a2 -mechanism has an electric piano aspect as key texture that jams along the track, and later the amazing string arrangement creates a lot of space for the drum sequence to bring the mood to another level. this tune could do a lot of damage on the dancefloor if dropped in a right time. b1- revolt kicks off with a storming groove right from the start. uncompromising drums with the acidic synth keys that rumble in 4 on the floor beat that showcase chicago house influences from the past. b2 - podrum is the closing track of this single that carries a real strong emotion and deepness. classic detroit influenced after hour tune approached in style. the warmth stretches across the entire soundscape, where we witness stojches skills to create an essential spiritual deep house number. definitely stojche has succeeded in delivering four different quality works to one beauty of a record!!! asset002 will be available only in tangible (physical) format

hot on the heels of midlands placement ep, aus returns with a remix 12inch featuring lone & motor city drum ensemble. both producers deliver deep, melodic reinterpretations of the originals, with lone accentuating midlands signature sound (whilst flawlessly incorporating his own neon tinged atmospherics) and mcde dubbing out the original, pushing it into throbbing raw cuts territory. both producers are at the top of their game. lone is dominating 2012 with a residency at manchester hot-spot hoya:hoya, a full length dropping in may via r&s that will surely occupy the top of many year end lists, and remixes for radiohead, tensnake & underworld already under his belt. jazz enthusiast motor city drum ensembles sample-based raw cuts series made him a household name within the deep house scene and last years dj-kicks mix set him apart from the pack with its on point mixing and musical diversity. his notable november 2011 boiler room set is considered one of the finest, and is just another example of why mcde has been, and will remain to be, a musical force to be reckoned with. next up on aus will be an ep from bicep & friends with a remix from panoramabar resident steffi.

for uzuri 018 we return to one of our home grown artists – jitterbug. time has flown since his last release for us in 2010, but we have been quite eager to get some new material out from him for a while – and, based on feedback we have had, plenty of other people are keen to hear more from him too. both his raw winter and beaten trax eps were pretty popular releases for us and his dj appearances always create a stir, so we are pleased to bring you this, the arcane theory ep. the track sequencing on this record is pretty aggressive – front-loaded with the confrontational rise of the machines. a track that really lives up to its title, sounding like the production line at cyberdyne systems… all stomp and evil synths, like a bad mood e-dancer. fallout couldnt be further from that – relaxed and making no attempt at all to get in your face. itll win you over, though. just a nice, deep groove and a lovely, phased beat. could play it for hours… the whole of the flip is devoted to nomads, a chiming, acidic wander. nearly eleven minutes in length. the kicks never at the fore on this one – most of the action occurs at the mid and high frequencies – a resonant 303, lots of hi hats and, later, synths which expand on the eastern-flavour of the track title

following up on his 2010 madhouse pop gem >someone out there<, aka jk (a.k.a. jonathan kreinik, new york producer extraordinaire and long-time live sound engineer for the rapture) returns to throne of blood with >2600 2600<, the title of which may or may not reference a famous analog synthesizer. an appropriate title, as synthesizers indeed abound from the start, flooding the low-end with disorienting deep analog washes before the utterly-infectious vocal enters and the party kicks off in earnest.

will azada opens with a huge, meaty bleep-chunking stomper. jackson lee comes back on the flip with his glacial dub, looming kicks awash in sub-ambient chords, then shifts from a mood of menace to one of somber longing.

patrice scott kicks off the 2012 release schedule in proper fashion with the orbital bliss ep - keeping the sistrum sound true and setting the tone for another year of quality output. we are treated to cool, smooth, futuristic cuts that pay tribute to the wonders of the cosmos. as always, the sounds are carefully crafted and slowly evolving, treating the listener to a refined palette of rhythm and melody suitable for the dancefloor and the living room, alike.

you know a producer has got something when the first note of the first track you hear makes you sit up and take notice. so it is with 19-year-old east londoner joss ryan: the instant the jabbing orchestral motif at the beginning of >melancholy dreams< – the title track of his debut ep – kicks in, it hits your emotional centres hard and lodges in your memory. as statements of intent go, its a pretty tasty one, and tells you that this is a talent who can stand out and make an impact way beyond the ins and outs of the micro-genres and endlessly reconfiguring trends of underground music.to put it simply: joss is a grime kid who expanded his horizons. his popular mix of his own material for mary anne hobbss radio show last december already shows that the three tracks on this ep are by no means a fluke, and there is a whole lot more to come besides…

all nite ep is the young mancunian waltons second set on hyperdub, after his very well received walton ep debut for the label in 2011. title cut >all nite< kicks it off with warm plucked strings, diva moans and lazer-like synths stretched to the point of anticipation over cracking grime handclaps and bass drums, until the track drops into a blocky bass line playing hide and seek with low arpeggios that spiral in and out of the mix, over a giant pounding metallic kick drum before layering on the warmth again. the whole track plays with a fine balance between warm, disco-like lushness and exuberant roughness. >mallet< is driving and darker, building detuned, bell-like tones over a 4/4 beat accented by breaks and fills and gaps, dropping into a big bass line and syncopations that disrupt the beat and bring the drama. >kush< is different again, taking the pace down with low end, synth hip hop with glassy chords, running over woozy pitch shifting rhodes chords fed through a layer of crackly gauze.

mutex recordings are back on wax with fluid ep from unbalance. this guy put out one of the most decent productions in 2011 with his white-labeled unbalance series and definitely is one of the artists to watch for in 2012. his music is an incredible collage of everything you love in techno: thick groove, detroit-styled chords and spooky futuristic effects. argentinas techno hope jonas kopp on remix duties completes the release with his unique recognizable straight-to-the-dancefloor material that really kicks ass! this one is a record that shouldnt be missed!

i was finishing up a long extended set in paris when the cleckcleckboom crew practically ran into the club to get on the decks. i had hung out with them before but tonight they had all new tracks and an incredible energy. so i stayed past the last ravers just to hear what they would play and that was when i heard “hugz” by french fries and bamabounou. this was a new sound, some nasty nasty shit sitting somewhere between juke and bass music and and i knew we had to get this sound on dirtybird no matter what. needles to say “yo vogue” is hot property and i’m really excited to release it on dirtybird. the half time drop, the chopped and screwed vocal, the stuttering bass kicks, the creepy moog on top - it’s simple and complex at the same time and it wrecks shop whenever it gets played. i did a remix on the b side giving it some db flavor and dirtybird newcomer leroy peppers lays out his own bay area skeeze with hot sauce on top. watch yer bass bins! best, vonstroke.

introducing >the courts 12 inch, the first single from jam citys forthcoming debut album, out later this year on night slugs. a double-a side release that showcases the two extremes of the lps material - the sublime and the industrial. on the a-side is >the courts<, jcs rawest dancefloor-orientated work yet. hyper-tense club music built of skids, dribbles, passes, big jersey kicks, and permeated by an ostentatious slap bass. the result is a pounding, jacking grid of a rhythm track, moments of on-court action reassembled with robotic efficiency. on the flip, jam city links up with oaklands main attrakionz for a very special collaboration called >the nite life<. squadda b and mondrem.a.n. drop mesmerising other-wordly verses over jam’s low-slung beat. the atmosphere is dense, hazy with purple smoke and submerged in the smoggy californian marine layer.

after a break for over a year pattern repeat is back again with another two tracks on their own label. both kenneth & resoe has been really busy last year, so it has been difficult to meet up in the studio. but now they had the time to finish two tracks of deep dirty techno from the capitol of denmark copenhagen. again they set it of with raw dirty dub infected grooves and the a side starts up right away with the dub elements intact, and then keeps building through the rest of the track. after the short break a hypnotic atmosphere kicks off in best pattern repeat style. the b side starts slowly with an almost alfred hitchcock kind of atmosphere, with a dull kick underneath. the track keeps gettin more dirty through the 6 min. and 15 secs. it last, with more distortion added to the dub stabs. its a good way that kenneth & resoe returns since the last 12 inch they put out in december 2010, to set the stage for 2012.

us native and techno newcomer 785 blasts onto the scene with a stellar debut 12inch. kansas native 785 debuts with his first 12inch ever on jerome sydenhams apotek records. it is clear this evasive sound engineer has a special gift to craft techno from sources others may have never dared to tap. the a-side mada theory is a display of pure techno diversity with slight nods to dub, ambient and the upper class of minimal. a record whose beauty may lay in it simplicity until one witnesses the complex chaos it causes on dance-floors. the flip, east box, gets a tad more mechanical utilizing drilling kicks and a host of atmospheric sounds sliding in unison with machine rhythms, coagulating into some hardened molten tech-funk. both tracks have that special something that makes them standout.what has he employed that others havent? a phenomenon well have to wait to decode until he unleashes his next pack of roving beats.
