all nite ep is the young mancunian waltons second set on hyperdub, after his very well received walton ep debut for the label in 2011. title cut >all nite< kicks it off with warm plucked strings, diva moans and lazer-like synths stretched to the point of anticipation over cracking grime handclaps and bass drums, until the track drops into a blocky bass line playing hide and seek with low arpeggios that spiral in and out of the mix, over a giant pounding metallic kick drum before layering on the warmth again. the whole track plays with a fine balance between warm, disco-like lushness and exuberant roughness. >mallet< is driving and darker, building detuned, bell-like tones over a 4/4 beat accented by breaks and fills and gaps, dropping into a big bass line and syncopations that disrupt the beat and bring the drama. >kush< is different again, taking the pace down with low end, synth hip hop with glassy chords, running over woozy pitch shifting rhodes chords fed through a layer of crackly gauze.

lb003 arrives courtesy of bristol born, brighton based producer sam kidel, aka el kid. following up his well received debut on immerse sam drops 3 tracks of wildly varied bass music. beginning with the title track >hypnosis<, lush ambient pads and plucked guitar soon give way to fearsome bass swells and metronomic percussion, coming across like early autechre remixed by floating points. second track >mud< drops the pace for a noisy house workout, reminiscent of fellow bristolians kowton, and labelmate vessel. >kachinja< on the flip is the straightest - and darkest - of the lot, a lurching warehouse techno cut that wouldnt sound out of place on ostgut ton. finally hyperdub wunderkid walton contributes a rough & ready funky dub of >hypnosis< to round out the ep.

sam walton is a 22 year old producer from manchester who came to hyperdub after feeding them demo tracks, and started off in 2011 with the *walton ep*, the first of three eps for the label. since then he has honed and developed his music into *beyond*, finding a really fresh and subtle intersection between music that doesnt seem to naturally fit together, old eski grime, funky and detroit house and techno but with smudged edges and a colourful industrial sound palette that gives a real richness to his productions.

‘black lotus’ follows walton’s inclusion on tectonic’s landmark 100th release – riko dan’s ‘hard food’ ep, plus the ‘praying mantis’/ ‘koto riddim’ 12” (also on tectonic) and the ‘taiko’ ep on kaizen – the latter two of which hinted at the album’s sound, but didn’t fully prepare us for the brilliance to come. abstract electronics, grime, dubstep and new styles that don’t even have a name yet coalesce perfectly on this classic in the making. it finds walton at peak power, reaching just as far (if not more so) than anything on the pan, different circles, boxed or tectonic catalogues for pure futurism and new-terrain-traversing brilliance.

* walton drops his third instalment on tectonic in fine style, calling upon japanese influences to create a truly unique sonic across both tracks in the release. asian instrumentation meets directly head to head with the cutting edge sounds of a uk grime-techno axis to great effect. * ‘praying mantis’ captures all the charm of a fine japanese watercolour painting by means of some spectacular midi-harp programming. hi-hats and detailed percussion set a shuffling pace, building the mood up before a beautiful harp section unfolds and takes over, expertly programmed by walton to sound as if a master harpist had stepped into the room! as drums and bass join the party we have all the makings of a low-slung grimey masterpiece, both soothing and energising in a perfect zen balance. * flip then for ‘koto riddim’ which again brings japanese influences to the forefront of the track. walton programs classic sounding japanese percussion sounds along with grunting vocal cuts and a charming flutebased melody. as the track drops, it switches into a more familiar, grime-based palette of sounds, deftly arranged for most dangerous impac

ts7, fresh from reworking singles for afrojack and tulisa, presents >grade a<, a colourful basssline number. in what will be his first vinyl outing since 2008, ts7 utilises his 4x4 roots, working a clever looping bass to perfection with some neat vocal sampling to give it bags of dancefloor swagger. complimented by a heavyweight remix package, >grade a< certainly packs a punch. remixes come from hyperdubs walton and mista mens mella dee. walton delivers an incredible grimy rework, culminating in a series of earshattering breakdowns and some fantastic synth work that draws comparisons with some of wileys early productions. mella dee, meanwhile, moves away from his 8-bar sound as heard in coyotes debut release >ctrl<, and looks to house for inspiration with >grade a< receiving a thorough rework in that vibe. full of the sounds more familiar with his mista men productions but packing more of a grimy punch, mellas remix is a surefire dancefloor favourite.
