Denham kick things off on the title track with some brooding discordant synth tones and low-end rumbles, complemented with a stuttering “Think” breakbeat. It’s a track that you can see doing damage anywhere from warehouses down to sweatbox venues and one that will surely end up in a lot of set-lists in the near future. B-side, “NPFO,” nicely contrasts “Leighton Buzzin’” with a grittier, more distorted sound. The bassline bounces around the furious (and sometimes reversed) percussion hits and even the odd bit of white noise at times. Denham Audio also deploy a mind-bending breakdown with an oscillating synth that sluggishly begins, accelerates to break-neck speeds and eventually slows down as the breakbeats restart in something like the sonic equivalent to being whacked in the stomach.

First up on remix duties for “Leighton Buzzin’” is Manchester upstart, Walton. His edit has already been bodying dancefloors and airwaves in the last few months so no doubt a few fans will be happy to finally get their mits on this one! Walton ‘melting pot’ approach to producing sees him deconstruct the track, turning it into a sparser, percussive techno workout with a heavy, almost dubstep-esque bassline. Corticyte’s take on “Leighton Buzzin’” keeps a lot more of the “Think” break in the mix but it’s chopped up in a superbly novel way. His edit manages to achieve a very sinister tone with the use of some near-endless delay and a hypnotic pace in his drum-programming. Lastly, Rivet takes on “NPFO” by transforming it into an acid-techno belter; complete with some sporadic, off-beat snare hits and space-aged string synths. The track progresses and evolves over it’s eight minute duration, taking some turns you would have a hard time predicting on a first listen.

Despite having only formed about two years ago, Denham Audio’s tracks show a level of sophistication and refinement that we expect from veteran producers who have been slaving away in a studio for multiple decades. Their approach to slowed breakbeats always feels fresh and never overdone, brining something new and unexpected to the table with each production. Expect big things from these young producers from up north with an undoubtedly bright future ahead of them.
