given the challenges of todays music market, its a fairly bold statement for an indie label to come out of the box with not one, but two vinyl only releases by an artist with no profile to speak of, but here black light smoke proves worthy of the faith being placed in him. sat001 switchback/black stripe is all old school drum machines, tape-hiss, heavy footed disco kicks, acid-a-plenty and funk-to-spare, but the tracks transcend the rawness of their roots to achieve a modern, club-ready edge with retro flair.

red007 sees pushing red taking a slightly different turn with more of a juke style release. (greek - known as dimitri) buckles down with a with what could be called as a fusion of juke, ghetto house & footwork to outstanding results. the sharp 808 kicks and bassline pulsate throughout the tune while a sharp vocal sample cuts through giving the tune that much more punch! flip over for the wonderful ikonika remix. ikonika has really taken this tune and given it her own feel and appeal. turning the stormer into more of a halftime/ house feel, its hard to put to words the outcome. its ferocious & melodic and all wrapped up with that signature ikonika feel! one you just have to hear!

tronic continues its roll out of summer bombs with the >origin / freed< two-tracker from dosem, an artist who has previously made a name for himself with sterling output for technasia sub-label sino. >origin< is the first of the two tracks and it opens proceedings with an epic, synth heavy vibe. filtered, impeccably programmed drums gently unfurl into a persistently padding groove that kicks on a big system. as the track opens up to drop, metallic synth chords shimmer out of the groove and deliver a massive punch. the intensity grows continually throughout and the melodies are pushed to their maximum, making this an unashamed anthem. the flipsides >freed<, while more heads down than its counterpart, is certainly no shrinking violet. driving drums are topped with long, building vocal screams and rising synths create a feverish atmosphere that, added to a pulsing and brutish bassline, goes off.

zeitlos, a german word meaning timeless is one way to describe chris wood & meats new ep, triple s. this is house of a different flavor, pulling influences from freestyle jazz and funk. we find ourselves late in the night. we enter triple s, a smoky cool atmosphere, relaxed and ready. light percussion leads us into the back, where a lone wandering bass line takes the stage. the simmer of hi hats and trample of toms usher in the kicks. chugging along, a single jazz flute, and sassy women punch through the fog. the strings rise and the bass sinks into the cellar. downplayed with style and elegance, triple s is the perfect track for half past midnight, opening the gates and pouring your body on to the dancefloor.

slowburn are two guys from dublin who recently made there debut via uzuri in the form of a various artists 12 inch. here they return for a full four track ep release of there own on elektrosouls. four raw deep house cuts that ooze melody and soul. >magnolia< kicks things off with deep square bass and shuffled snares that give way to detuned pads while teasing synths bubble away below. >letter live & liberty< the second track, an 808 rythim joined buy a haunting lead that builds into deep melodic pads. on the flip comes >bladerunning< based around deep pads and more 808 beats with cool synth stabs this track is for dark rooms. the record wraps things up with >medicusa< a very soulful track full of quirky melodies that build and build over nicely crafted drum patterns.

the highly anticipated squeaky lobster ep has been worth every second of the wait. in terms of sample / synth selection, song structure and sound quality, no expense has been spared. hi-fi synthetic drums intertwine with lo-fi sampled kicks & snares whilst heavy stretched out synth bass lines are topped with bollywood-esque string samples, 80s guitar bridges & plenty of other orchestral mayhem. the lush, thick melodic layers mount up into a frequently spine-tingling whole whilst the rhythm section, although outside the box, does by no means neglect the headnod factor. the incredible feat here is that although no 8 bars are quite the same as the next, a sense of unity is preserved within each genre-defying track, making it the stuff of epic journeys. you may start your listening experience in front of your turntable, staring at the record spinning, but you will end up somewhere quite different, squeaky lobster has made sure of that. as man from phone number 770021 would say: >this is $50.000. good luck.<

supported by tornado wallace (delusions of grandeur), pete herbert (reverso 68/dance disorder)... when jay shepheard launched retrofit in early 2010, deep house with a splash of disco was on the menu. six releases later and the quality of music hasnt faltered once. jays own work has always been the main focus on all five releases but for retrofit 6, rudys midnight machine, (who is in fact robin lee of faze action) takes to the stage alongside an appearance from shepheard (as ee_ef_ex) on remixing duties. >ecstatic love glow< kicks off the ep, diving head first into the disco and synth heavy realm that we expect from retrofit (and, for that matter, from mr lee), whose house outputs with faze action as far back as 97 speak for themselves. the intro of tip tapping hats and congas leads into a penetrating bass guitar, a riff that goes on to be cleverly mirrored by keyboards and later, by what sounds like a scratchy lakland guitar. wooden hats, sirens and a plethora of cosmic elements boogie their way around until the tracks dominant synth parades in and takes over the arrangement, striking a dramatic and smug pose at the close of each stab. the second track of >east side good living< sticks with its predecessors groove, cosmic sirens, electronic whistles and metallic drum taps yet again highlighting rudys modern disco sound

young talented producer steve lorenz from italy combines his techno tracks with fusion basses and deep kicks that features cool grooves of industrial sounds in constant evolution. techno, detroit, minimal, dub are delivered with a depth and resonance of sound that is absolutely unique.

our japanese dear friend hidenobu ito is definitely overwhelming and it seems almost comically out of place. from alien hydraulics to percussive steel fractals he allows to take shape within the realm of impossibility. so, what follows next on numbolic records is a stunning lesson in subtle buildup of sound design. theres a feeling of constant movement and shaky energy that means his music never quite stands still. highly resonant and rapidly-panning drum hits act like flickering fluorescent lights. the result is a heavily abstracted layering and perhaps our most sonically release to date. every sound, no matter how tiny, is endlessly tweaked and picked apart. the 12 inch ep is rounded off with 2 prickly re-interpretations. dualism turns up the fog with a super-deep captivating and yet lovingly version. while ditch comes up with a characteristic throbbing dirty techno rework. another 4 smashing tracks by hidenobu ito are added digitally as well as two bonus remixes. kai provides a dance floor-approved version and the hungarian newcomer as we said made a cartoon spaceship to the moon. big pulsating bass kicks will drive you in that particular head-space, but before accidentally killing someone in love, we suggest go get this record instead and start dance! be numbolic!

the first world unknown 12 inch kicks off with a slamming piece of prototype house from glasgows naum gabo aka jonnie wilkes from optimo and his production partner james savage. showing that a relatively low pace doesnt mean any drop in energy levels and dancefloor pump power, whop! cracks along like something from an alternate reality version of 1980’s chicago. its as easy to imagine it rocking the house at medusas or the box as it is to envision it in the present day soundtracking some kind of bizarro fetish party or a particularly intense session at berghain’s lab-oratory. this is jacking in the true sense of the word. on the flip side italian born berlin resident franz underwear ups the tempo with a stunning piece of slamming european musclebeat. shades of ibiza 88-89 pervade here, the kind of pumping, chunky synth action, teutonic vocal exhortations and vaguely menacing but ultimately benign vibe that sent thousands of potty european kids totally round the bend and changed the world of dance music forever.

label owner, ryuji takeuchi, is on duty to drop another bomb for the 2nd release on his own local sound network (lsn) label. while the 1st release, final weapon ep, is still hot, ryuji really shows his definition of techno with his unique style, which can be well described by these 2 words: tense and relax. on the a side,heart beats solid kicks you in the head with its dark, evil and brutal elements. audio injection, l.a. based techno producer, adds another essence of darkness and deepness to it and gets your heart beaten even more straight. on the b side,heart beats tight represents more straight and hypnotic side of techno. bosnian all time favorite, mikatek aka dj mika, gives some funk and space to it and keeps your heart beaten tighter. anyone could hardly stop its heart beaten with this ep, and thats what this ep stands for. make sure to keep your mind open for the upcoming releases on this local sound network imprint.

sampler #3 from the global communication back in the box compilation album, the techno and ambient retrospective selected by tom middleton and mark pritchard, back together again after a 15 year hiatus. opening up this seriously hot four track ep is an ultra rare and often overlooked carl craig remix of yennek, aka kenny larkin. two detroit pioneers collide on this beauty, with delicate oscillating keys gliding over a heavyweight breakbeat and clattering hats, a signature style of carl s. the track really kicks in with the bassline and monumental pitch bending synth stabs. a real must have for anyone with a love for the original detroit sound

for all the wonderfully subtle shell-breaking he did on his full-length, mark e falls back on old, slow habits for his new single, >the day<. and welcomely, we might add. pitching things down to a basement lounge floor crawl, the midlands dj/producer wraps his always chugging kicks and snares in serpentine synth-bass, jazzy, tripleted hi-hats, and moaning, wordless soul vocals. its grasp is tantric—hinting coyly at ecstatic release, but never fully delivering. for the vinyl junkies that bought stone breaker and missed out on it the first time around (it was absent from that version), this release should be a no brainer. but >the day< isnt carrying all the weight here. a new track called >special fx< will have sample hounds—particularly those with a thing for classic electro-pop—salivating. and the oft imitated, never replicated prins thomas shows up on the flip for a (naturally) eleven- minute revamp of >the day<, livening up the bass and drum patterns, adding in strings, piano, guitar, organ, and ending up with something that totally could have emanated from a camaro at some point in the early seventies. (albeit, one owned by someone with interest in eleven-minute instrumentals.) it even has a fade out!

for more than a year, third ear and benjamin have been selecting tracks for this ep and for an album to follow later in the year. the wait was largely due to the track no kicks, which initially used a chuck d acapella, titled no. when third ear couldn?t get clearance for the acapella, we suggested to benjamin that we try and think of another poet/rapper who could produce an original lyric inspired by chuck d?s flow. after some thought we suggested diamondancer, who was inspired to write the lyric she performs here. stay hungry stay foolish and acidic sun are delicious and dreamy, with a fat pulsing groove. hello ammmerika is more urgent, pushing the groove constantly.

this latest lovebirds ep on winding road records is another absolute masterpiece of chilled house soul and deep rave. a really excellent package and a must-have lovebirds release. on the a-side track, >want you in my soul<, lovebirds teams up with vocalist stee downes. stees acclaimed debut album >all in a day< was released on sonar kollektiv in 2008, and who has worked and performed alongside the likes of motor city drum ensemble, amp fiddler, dj spinna, and bugz in the attic. their collaboration for winding road is a driving vocal house bomb that will rock your world. the b-side kicks off with the dirty tech tune >give me a dubf*ck<, an injection of dark rave that has been causing serious explosions on dancefloors for a few months now. perfect chemical material for the harder floors. the b2 track is hot toddys remix of >want you in my soul< - a chrome-plated disco dimension to the track by crazy p man chris todd, which was licensed to tensnakes >in the house< compilation before it even saw the light of day. hot stuff indeed.

maurizio vitello returns to metroline with some seriously deep bass-driven techno. a devastating ep. the lead track is a driving, stripped down techno groove. full-bodied toms and a seriously fat bass keep the track rolling while filtered vocals and understated synths add the dynamics. heavy! looking good keeps that groove going with a bassline so heavy you will have to pick yourself up off the floor. a bubbling percussion break evolves throughout the track, building in complexity, but kept in check by some nice metronomic hats at the high end. on movers maurizio lets the drums do the talking. everything locks tightly around the solid kicks. the multi-layered break adds a sweet cubano vibe that you simply wont be able to shake off. let the bass drrrrooopppp! pleased? yes we are. this playful track is going set the summer floors on fire. vocal samples weave in and out of the mix, and sharp-as-a-needle 80s-tinged synths stab through the deep, heavy rhythm track to awesome effect.

the new record features all new material from the hyperdub founder and his mc collaborator, and will follow up their 2006 album >memories of the future<. in the years since that release, kode9s sound has evolved considerably, mostly shedding the framework of dubstep for ever new mutations of uk bass music, as heard on his dj kicks or the >you dont wash< ep from last year. in addition to the spaceapes post-apocalyptic rhymes, which have also haunted records by martyn and echologist, the album features chinese mc and producer cha cha. on the final track, kode9 is joined in the studio by brainfeeder beatsmith flying lotus.

300 copies, vinyl only, authentic, raw, underground. the second offering from laak on their austere imprint is another defined four tracker. >back of beyond< kicks things off, a sincere heads down jam combining latin percussion elements with a killer bass line and warm chords. the second track, >dont ever leave< is a heartfelt lament on the feeling of loss, slowing the tempo down, this one is deep! on the flip, >cosmic causeway< offers something a little different although keeping with the warm pads, this time the use of a spaced out trumpet keeps things flowing. the remaining track >cantankerous emotions< is a little different as regards to the beats, but loses none of the soul and profoundness of the other tracks. only for the underground soldiers!

label bosses are back in tandem for the sixth release on micropunto: wine ep, which also marks the beginning of micropunto schallplattens vinyl era. wine ep started as a back to back game after a spillage incident. ikkaku and d-gelo started producing two separate tracks in their respective stations and every half hour they swapped seats, building the tracks as they went along. the result is this musical experiment that sets the trend for all things to come from the micropunto clan. they spilled wine on me kicks in with a deep lead stab from the catacombs. the elements appear on the scene in a stride to resurface. it goes up then down, left, rigth, it gets dubby, then back in your face. in i spilled wine the beat unfolds steadily like a bulldozer coming up to the surface in search of the true sound. next we meet the preacher. with a subtle housy piano lead he puts us in the right track, reminding us that the dance floor is made of sand and we are on the rivers bank. listen to the flow. lord techno, you are my music. originally inspired from a dub tune featuring ras ajay from the spaceship sound crew in london,dubwine closes the triangle with a huge dub flare. fat subsonic bass and broad stabs make this track a serious contender on the dub techno charts. its the producers blink of respect to the reggae culture that has inspired them all through the years, hence the vinyl release.

tony ollivierra begins 2011 by getting down with the machine sound. bordering on acid-funk, this ep really gets it shakin. the title track jericho, reeks of the latter days of disco with a deep bass line that fades in and takes control of the party. a warm synth chord then kicks in along with some strings which build up to a peak time climax. nag champa captures a deep and surreal groove with a sweet aromatic feel that definitely is burning. the dark bass line entangles the listener in a sensual moment while a resonant synth riff tops it off. on the flip, midi aura begins with an uncompromising synth bass line that does not quit. the sequence bubbles onward and a thick chord sweeps through the arrangement opening up into a placid apex of harmony. the aura of this midi is feel good all the way. lastly jack box, another acid track that works the cutoff and resonance into a climax of delightful poly rhythm and melody. jericho will be a very limited vinyl press and will be the final project on the ibex music label. keep your ears open for his next label venture which will be introduced this summer.

summer has come early. the fog is literally lifting and willing the summer to come early with this excellent ep for metroline. lead track diggler’s job is a breezy house number with pimping keys and a beautiful bass bounce. there’s plenty of movement in the percussion and a light touch that just begs for summer to come. shout romance is a shade tougher with its up-front kicks and acid-tinged bassline. it has slow burn intensity that is nicely counterbalanced by smooth reverb-soaked vintage synths.the jackspot remix of shout romance really brings out the funk in those synths, underpinning that with down-the line percussion and skittering hats that give the track a real drive. rounding things up nicely is in the right mood. the track’s bassline is sticky, sweet treacle over which congas and vocal cuts are expertly sprinkled to create a tasty treat. it never gets sickly though… horns are deployed sparingly, and the track has the same cool as a cucumber minimalism that makes this ep pure pleasure on the eardrums
