ras g and moresounds explore the outer reaches of sound system culture for dub-stuy’s new collaborative series of eps. brooklyn-based label dub-stuy kicks off 2018 with the inaugural release of a new ep series dedicated to unearthing and celebrating the outer reaches of sound system culture. taking its cue from the classic dub releases where two producers would face off with their own versions, dub-stuy’s meets series brings together artists who have a clear dub influence but do not operate solely within the sphere of the dub and reggae world. the first such meeting is between los angeles beat supremo ras g (brainfeeder, stones throw) and paris junglistic dub scientist moresounds (cosmic bridge, astrophonica).

paris-based producer von d debuts on dub-stuy with a four-track ep of hair-raising and socially-conscious dub music boasting a cast of world-class vocalists and musicians. closing the ep is a sample of the legendary bunny lee talking about king tubby and lee perry birthing dub before von d unfurls his own studio experimentation on ‘surrealiste skank, a dedication to the timeless power of dub music. wicked scam further cements von ds talent for combining an authentic sound with a modern ear. the bass envelopes the listener without ever choking them, the melodies uplift the soul, and the lyrics feed the mind.

dub-stuy welcomes up and coming producer blind prophet for a conscious dub release in collaboration with russia’s tenor youthman and italy’s numa crew. long island, new york s blind prophet makes his debut on dub-stuy records alongside the vocal talents of tenor youthman , one of the founders of russia’s lion posse sound system. ‘ marijuana burns capitalism ’ is a deep and meditative social statement sure to move the dance and stimulate the heads. on ‘marijuana burns capitalism’, blind prophet lays down a solid riddim, with a deep driving bassline and a bubbly harpsichord skank, for tenor youthman to sing about the liberating properties of hemp in fighting the evils of mass production and capitalism. the result is a simple and effective cut backed by a sparse dub that lets the drums and bass roll out to full effect. the flip side sees florence’s numa crew deliver their own fire for the dance with another straight to the chest dub version that focuses on the bassline and tenor’s unique vocal style. a 12” for the massive that continues the uplifting sound system music dub-stuy is known for.

dub-stuy links bukkha with uk grime stalwart killa p for a dark, sound killing anthem. dub-stuy expands on their vision for 21st century sound system music with a new 12inch that brings together resident producer bukkha and one of grimes most recognisable voices, killa p . the result is a deadly cut that takes no prisoners and is backed by an equally heavy instrumental. death chat is arguably one of dub-stuys most ambitious collaborations to date. bukkha crafts a dub meets grime riddim that builds from filtered keys into a ten-ton heavy monster. killa p, who has collaborated with the bug and is fresh from a turn on sir spyros topper top, delivers cutting lyrics in his instantly recognizable patois-inflected style, with each bar building tension toward a sonic climax. backing up this dancefloor sureshot is ‘ethiopian dub’, an instrumental that samples its vocal and melodic hook from an obscure dubplate and whirls both around a steady beat and bass line solid enough to punch through walls. with this latest 12inch for dub-stuy, bukkha shows his versatility and delivers an anthem that no sound can test.

dub-stuy records closes 2016 with one last 12” from californian producer dubamine who lends his new school dub touch to a classic- tristan palmer ’s ‘joker smoker’. palmer himself recorded a new vocal to fit with dubamine’s reimagining of the song, which takes the riddim to new deep and cavernous ends. the result is a party anthem that resonates from jamaica to dancefloors world-wide. this is the first official relick of ‘joker smoker’, which was originally released in 1982 by greensleeves on the album of the same name produced by jah thomas. on the flipside, dubamine teams up with another upcoming bay area producer, saule , for ‘jimini dub’. together the pair have concocted a stripped back, weighty instrumental that brings to mind classic eyes-down vibes from the likes of mala and skream. the pair met in santa cruz and their collaboration shows the strength of a new generation of local producers picking up from the trails blazed by the likes of matty g in the past decade. this will be saule’s second vinyl release, following his debut on joe nice’s gourmet beats label earlier this year.
